Chapter 1: prologue

Chapter Text

“I’d now like to introduce the valedictorian of Khemia University’s class of 2024, Albedo Kreideprinz!”

The announcer's voice rang loud in the grand hall, reverberating off the walls along with the mellow claps of his fellow graduating class and their parents in attendance. It was a bit of a sensory overload for Albedo, considering his likeness to quiet and often more confined spaces, but he supposed this was only one of many things he would have to get used to in the future. He rose from his seat in the front section and waved his hand to the crowd as he strode up to the stage, gown flowing comfortably around him and his sashes resting comfortably on his shoulders.

Albedo took his place behind the podium and cleared his throat, staring into a crowd of unrecognizable and stony faces save for Sucrose’s doe eyes and Timaeus’ encouraging smile.

“Ahem. Good evening, Khemia University class of ‘24. I’d…uh- I’d like to, first of all, thank you all for being here and congratulate my fellow graduates for all their hard work thus far, from pursuing your bachelor’s degree to the honored few who are earning their doctorates today. I’d also like to thank the professors here at Khemia for their dedication to shaping the students of this prestigious school and preparing them for the future. Your hard work and dedication will not go unnoticed.” Albedo took a moment to look back and smile at his professors and take a deep breath to calm his nerves. “Aristotle once said, ‘Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.’ I am inclined to agree with his statement, as while the knowledge I’ve learned here is one thing I am grateful to have earned from this experience, I am also grateful to have made valuable connections with my peers and professors. Without you all, I would have never gained the bravery or trust in myself to earn the title of valedictorian and stand on this stage as we speak. I invite you all today to depart with this message, to love and to trust in those you meet, and to truly educate your heart such that you learn lessons, not only from your professors or your employers, but from life itself. Thank you, and congratulations Khemia University class of 2024.”

The crowd erupted again with applause with a few cheers sprinkled in, and Albedo took his seat once again as the ceremony commenced. The next hour was a blur of names being called and handshakes being exchanged, and before he knew it, Albedo was outside watching the graduates and their parents reunite, hugs and gifts being given and tears heard from a distance.

Eventually, he found Sucrose and Timaeus in the crowd and they exchanged a few final remarks before they had to begin preparing for their future careers and life in general.

“Are you really not going to take up Sumeru’s offer? They have the best chemistry programs over there offering you good positions, I think you’re making a mistake here Mr. Albedo!” Sucrose asked for what felt like the 30th time this week.

“I’ve already told you, Sucrose. I’d prefer to stay here in Mondstadt to advance their findings in chemistry. Besides, it’s closer to home and I’ll get to see you and Timaeus more often since you’re staying as well. I feel it’s just better for me in the long run, you know?”

“I suppose… Either way, I’ll be looking forward to seeing you around! My family and I need to get back home for the after-party. Do you, uh, wanna come with? I know–”

“No need. I have to take the bus early tomorrow morning to move into my new apartment, so I’ll be packing up all day and sleeping early. I appreciate the offer, though.” Albedo said, smiling despite being a bit melancholic.

“All right, Mr. Albedo. Tell Durin I said hello and message me as soon as you reach your new apartment! I’d love to know how your area is and how your apartment ends up looking!”

“...of course, Sucrose. I’ll send you and Timaeus the housewarming invitations soon.” Albedo said as he waved goodbye.

The rest of the day was uneventful. Albedo did exactly as he said, packing the rest of his dorm into boxes and loading them onto the U-Haul truck before falling asleep.
