Resilience

Summary:

New to China and not fully aware of the Demon infestation she will encounter, our reader accidentally bumps into one of the most infamous demons in China. For better or for worse. She's dragged into danger zone after danger zone. And trying not to fall apart from her own disabilities in the middle of a battle field isn't as easy as she'd hoped, but maybe a certain hotheaded new friend could help with that.

Meanwhile, Red Son, son of the Demon Bull King, is exposed to a world he hadn't considered before. He'd always thought that a peasant was a peasant, and that was the end of it. But after meeting a little "nobody" who's fighting the hardest of battles all behind the curtain, it changes everything he thought about the people he walks past everyday. (And especially about the tough-as-nails girl, herself. Who's very presence always seemed to make his heart skip a beat.)

Soon he must face the idea that sometimes the strongest people out there are the ones too sick to throw a punch. Now, how in all of China was he supposed to explain something like that to his parents!?

Chapter 1: A/N

Chapter Text

hi welcome to my Red Son x disabled!Fem!Reader thing!

Super self-indulgent. Like, I mention several events that actually happened to me. These are all my problems, so, sorry if you can't relate (let's be real though, I have so many problems you'll probably relate to at least one.) Reader isn't visibly disabled, and that's gonna be super important.

The disability in question is Ehlers-Danlos (EDS) so if you're reading it and you think that Y/n is the Mary Sue of disabilities, look it up. (You might not be able to sleep at night after, though.)

She/her pronouns for reader. Again this is for me, so sorry if you can't relate to that either. There's an absolute mad lad on AO3 who has three different versions of their LMK x reader, he, she, and they, and as rad as that play is, I'd lose my marbles if I tried to do the same, so one fic is all you get. No Refunds. (Mereeples, I see you!)

TW: Panic attacks (probably), social anxiety, introspection on the severe ablism you don't realize is everywhere. I describe pain a sad amount of times (in case that's somehow a trigger), acknowledgement of Red Son's sometimes abusive parents. (I'd argue they're steadily improving though, so I'm not gonna be too hard on them for it)

Another thing to mention. I'm not Chinese, much less Asian! So take all this with a grain of salt. I will say, that I've had several native Chinese teachers, nine-ish years of immersion Mandarin lessons, am reading a version of Journey to the West that's in simplified Mandarin, designed to help you read better, and I've watched the whole show in Mandarin to improve my comprehension, as well. I love Chinese culture so much, and that's what gravitated me to this show in the first place.

So, for any native/Mandarin speakers, 如果我写的是错,请告诉我。我不会生气。我的中文是还好的,有点丑,有点错。你的国家是很酷的!我非常喜欢!所以我要我的故事跟你的家一样。谢谢你! ❤️

Monkie Kid is like, one of the first shows with actual good Chinese rep (instead of a confused mish-mash of every vaguely Asian thing), and I really don't want to ruin that. It baffles me that some people are so uninformed that they think China is a 3rd world country. (Especially when their weirdo president is trying to weaponize TikTok to screw with America.)

TL;DR, let's try our best to appreciate and understand Chinese culture while simping for our firey little meow-meow. (Oh no, the cringe has enveloped me)

I'm honestly kinda surprised at how much time I started sinking into this thing.
