The Solution to Harry's Problem

Summary:

When facing foes far more skilled and experienced than you it doesn't make sense to face them fighting them that way. Now how to level the playing field.

Edited: 3/4/25

Notes:

Jason has a special charm that replaces all swear words with (blocked) to save students from his... vocabulary

Work Text:

Jason set down his gun as he heard the door of the Room of Requirement open, turning to see the trio of students he had invited, “Glad you guys could make it.”

Harry nodded, “You said you could teach us how to fight Death Eaters and Voldie.”

Hermione frowned down at the table he had laid his supplies out on, “Are those guns?”

Jason smiled, “Yep.”

“What’s a gun?” Ron looked at the others, who were giving the guns careful looks, confused.

Hermione answered first, “Extremely dangerous muggle weapons.”

While Jason answered, “The solution to your problems.”

Harry, who had been staring at the guns, finally looked back to Jason, “What?”

“Kids, your opponents in this war are all highly trained experienced fighters, you're not going to get to a skill level to face them in a straight up fight.”

“You can’t expect us to sit back and not fight back!”

“I’m not saying that, (blocked) Harry you got a giant target on your back you can’t not learn to fight, but right now? My twelve year old brother could take out all three of you before any of you could cast a spell.”

“Hey!” Ron and Harry glared at Jason.

Hermione instead paused, looking again at the guns, “You're talking about Robin.”

Ron blinked, “Who?”

Jason arched his eyebrow, “What makes you say that?”

“You're from Gotham and your skill surpasses anything a normal person could do. Twelve is roughly the age the current Robin is and,” She waved at the guns, “You’re Red Hood.”

Harry stared at Jason, “The superhero?”

Jason smiled, “You got some brains on you, that will keep you alive, as long as you don’t over do it. You do not want to know I’ve had to save Red’s ass because he was being smart about something. No matter how smart you are dodging is always more important than anything else.”

Ron looked between the other three, “Super… hero?”

Jason blinked, “Please tell me the wizarding world isn’t so insular that it doesn’t know about Superman at least.”

“Who?”

“Really (blocked). Alright superheroes are people, typically with superhuman skills like flying or super strength that fight people like Voldie or other villains or threats to humanity, and just crime in general. Personally I use guns to incapacitate villains and criminals to keep civilians safe. That’s actually how I got this job.”

Hermione frowned, “How did you get the position of DADA teacher.”

“Dumbles went to Gotham this summer looking for a curse breaker to break the DADA position curse. He got mugged almost as soon as he poofed into Gotham. I stepped in. After the mugger ran off he asked me about a curse-breaker and I laughed at him. Gotham chews up and spits out curse breakers.”

“How did that lead to you being hired?”

“Well he told me about a (blocked) that was targeting kids and I’m known for caring about kids so when I realized the (blocked) was targeting a lot of kids I volunteered to come take the (blocked) out, but apparently there’s some (blocked) prophecy (blocked) that says only Harry can kill him so I’m going to give you the skill to instead.”

“And,” Harry looked at the guns, “You're going to teach me with guns? Not spells?”

“As I said these (blocked) have the advantage in magic so we’re finding you a different method that they won’t expect or have experience with even when they realize what you're using. Anyways I’m not actually your kind of wizard, I have some magical abilities but I’m no spell caster so I can’t teach you any useful spell work for your fight against Voldie.”

“You’re a muggle? But you teach magic!”

“Think back, have I ever actually cast a spell? I don’t need to cast spells to teach them. Due to some weird (blocked) stuff in my life I’m magical enough to see Hogwarts and the like but my magical abilities are strictly combat ordinated.”

Hermione frowned, “Red Hood uses guns, not magic.”

“Generally not, guns are sufficient for most of my fights but I can pull some special things out if I need to deal with something magical, like a demon or the horcruxes like Voldie is into.”

Ron shifted in place, narrowing his eyes, “Horcrux? What’s that?”

“Eh, we’ll cover that another day but it’s a way to avoid dying. You wouldn’t happen to know where I could find fiend fire or basilisk venom would you? I prefer to avoid using my method if possible, soul fire is not fun. They are hard to destroy and I already tracked one down.”

Harry tilted his head, “There’s a dead basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets under the school.”

“That’s worryingly convenient.”

“Worryingly?”

“Nothing is ever that easy unless there’s a catch. The ring will probably explode or something when I destroy it, but that’s for later. Go stand next to one of the guns.”

Ron frowned, “Will a gun really help? They’re muggle.”

Jason sighed, “Room five humanoid targets please.”

Beyond the table with the guns five targets appeared.

“Alright I want you to stun each target and we’ll see who's faster. Start!”

Ron pulled his want free and as he was half way through the first spell Jason picked up a gun and shot each of the five targets in the head without looking.

“And they’re all dead, and you haven’t gotten a single spell off. See why a gun could be useful?”

Ron nodded, staring at the destroyed targets.

“Now I’m not teaching you headshots, the chest is both a bigger thing to hit and I’m not expecting you all to go for kill shots every time. If you shoot someone they are going to be to busy with the hole in their body to focus on you, make sense?”

At the groups nod he continued, “Now, never point a gun at something you don’t want to shoot. Now pick up the guns this is how…”

A lesson on the basics of gun use and then he got them to start practicing. After setting up the next lesson Jason set the trio off and started cleaning up his firearms. Having seen each of the three firing he had a better idea on what sort of firearm he should look into for each of the three.

Notes:

Working on new price in series so having to change a few things in this case it's the ring not the diadem Jason found. Now to fix the new story as I forgot Jason knows what horocx are... it will be a bit before that story comes out but a new story is coming very soon to this series!
