Work Text:
The sun was setting on an evening all too familiar to the two men, for they had seen it multiple lifetimes worth. The warmer atmosphere was a surprise to the regular person that walked past, as it was was late into the winter months however the brunette and the blonde didn’t seem to mind it. Maybe that was what happened when two people, on the more ‘abnormal’ side came into contact.
The two men had been friends for as long as they could remember, they both knew that at one point, they hadn’t been close-or for that matter, even known each other- however as time passed, it became a great comfort for the two men to be close with one another.
They had been joined together in a bond that was like none other, for due to their peculiar situations, they seemed to outlive anybody close with them. It wasn’t their fault, just the way they were created. You couldn’t blame them for any problems, as it wasn’t their fault. For it wasn’t their fault if they were bored, upset or even misunderstood. It was everybody else’s fault. They were perfect in the eyes of the divine, they were above the average human- both lifespan and intelligence.
The two has come together this evening to discuss, like they did every so often. You couldn’t blame them if one was busy, or the other was in a sticky situation or if they were needed someplace else. But the chance that they did reconvene at the familiar park bench was always memorable.
Although the two had been in this world for hundreds of years, humans always confused them. Although the two were better then humans, they still had so much to ponder about them.
Time after time, they had been directly told everything about the human race. All their quirks and kinks, however it never made sense to the two men. Why would a human die for another? Especially if they barely knew the person. Was it for a sense of justice? To be seen as a hero?
But on the other hand, why would a human decide to hurt another? Was their sense of pride too high and they couldn’t figure something else out? Or was it for something more sinister.
The two men didn’t often question their superiors' decisions, but the human race was always an odd choice to them. And while the two men shared very similar opinions, often times they had different inquiries, which made the other think too hard. Creating even more questions and problems. It didn’t make sense, and while somethings were better left to the creators. Wasn’t it their purpose to question and answer? To figure out things? That’s why they’ve been alive for so long, so they can figure out all unsolved problems.
The slightly shorter, brunette man perked up after a couple he was watching had finally walked off and turned to his partner. He opened his mouth, to start their long-awaited conversation.
“Look at how they crawl around, upon the ground... like little ants” He took a long breath, savouring the way the warm air enveloped his fake lungs. He was lucky that the humans he was talking about had already walked far away, far enough that they couldn’t hear him insult them, and refer them to simple, little bugs.
“Yes” his partner agreed, but then continued “but look at how they fascinate, confusing fate, with what is a merely chance.” His blonde companion pushed up the glasses that were sitting on his nose and sniffed slightly. He never completely understood how humans got together. At one point their love interest was a complete stranger to them, but now they trusted one another with their heart. Arguably the human races most vulnerable item.
“Pfft” the brunette laughed “isn’t it a laugh” his friend from the other side of the bench quietly whispered, ‘isn’t it a shame’, “thinking there is someone in heaven to blame”. He resumed his speech. Remembering all the past times the two had seen the humans pray for a better life, but also remembering all the past times the two had seen the humans curse the heavens for the situation they put themselves in.
“Yes, but even while blaming fate for the lives that they lead. They hope for the lives that they need”. The other man agreed once again. Reminiscing with their partner about the countless humans that screwed their own lives over, for the idea of a ‘fun-er’ existence.
“Living every day, till the day they die” continued the brunette, while elegantly standing up. His beige jacket flaring out behind him. “Never getting answers-” the man said, quickly getting cut off by his associate.
“But still asking why...” the glasses wearing man said, in a voice that almost seemed full of sympathy. But the brunette knew better, and understood that his words were full of questions, and more empathy than anything. He continued, “Going through the motions as if there would be a reward. W- “
He tried to finalise his sentence, but before he could add more, the standing man that was ‘rudely’ interrupted early added his own thoughts to complete the idea.
“While we stay eternally bored!” He almost shouted. Even after knowing him for a long time, the blonde could never fully get his head around the brunette's lack of patience. Even if it was technically ‘boring’, it was all a part of the process, and eventually they both would see the fruits of their tireless labour. But the coat wearer always seemed to coincidentally forget this part. Which lead to his outburst.
“They’re only human. They don’t see”. The taller started, trying to once again calm his companion before the two of them gained unwanted attention from any passer-by’s. This almost always happened when the two got together. It was technically their safe space to share any unsavoury opinions.
The brunette complained “who they are is who they’ll always be!” It always had bored the both of them, how the humans thought they could just change fate, and in turn change themselves. It never worked, although some were close. It was always shut down by the higher ups. As only the heavens know what would happen if somebody managed to go completely off the fated tracks.
“Only human, after all.” The blonde shook his head, remembering how fickle the human life is. How quickly it could be taken away, but at the same time, how quickly it could be made again. How easily they could be broken physically, and how long it can take to put one back together mentally.
“So, they push, and they shove” the one that was standing up suddenly turned around as he spoke. The blonde could guess it was for dramatic effect. However, knowing his friend, it could be unintentional. He enjoys amplifying his actions, and it always brings a smile to both of their faces.
“With this thing they call ‘love’, till they fall”. Often times, the taller one muses, the humans would suffer for the love they feel. The phrase ‘love makes the person blind’ has been Provence time and time again. Always with the same result, some relationships were destined to fail. They always disappoint, as for they miss so many opportunities for a love that is completely dead.
The brunette quickly spins around to face his companion, and after seeing a deep brooding face, he quickly resumes with his opinionated ideas. Not wanting to waste a second more, as he knows how invested the blond can get inside his own head.
“Isn’t it a farce” he says, catching the attention of the other man. In return, the taller replies “isn’t it a waste?”. While they both view the world very similarly, smaller things they often disagree upon. For example, what becomes of the humans after they are broken.
The standing man picks up from where he was just a second ago “struggling to face what can never be faces” he dramatically moves his left arm and drapes it across his face, creating an almost ominous shadow while the corners of his mouth start raising into a smirk.
“Yes” the blond once again agrees “but maybe... death can release something more than we share”. He thinks about all the times he’s had to ‘save’ his associate from returning back to the heavens. Too soon, he always says. We have to keep waiting, for our time to return will come. Be patient and continue watching the world from the ground. Let the humans pass, it’s their end. That’s where their fate always comes to.
The other starts yawning and loudly states “I really don’t know, and don’t care”. He knows what his friend is thinking about. This is one of the many points they have issues on. While he wants to stay on the earth for just ‘a little while long’ the brunette wants to return to the heavens and take his rightful place.
“They’re only human”. the man that’s still sitting down says, crossing one leg over the other and brings his hand up to lean his head on. While he believes he’s better then mortals, he still knows that they are great entertainment for the heavens and should be pitied. “Standing still...” he shakes his head and looks up at his dramatic friend that’s still posing.
“Ugh” the man moves out of position after realising he will not be getting a reaction. “Doomed to live pushing boulders up hill” he reminisces about all his past human ‘friends’ and how they all failed at their dreams and goals, because even if they wanted to, it was never possible. For them at least.
“Only human, after all” the blonde chuckles slightly when he realised what his friend is thinking about. He can relate of course, it’s just sometimes funny to see the eccentric man down on his luck.
“So, they give, and they take”, the brunette stretches out his arm towards his companion, one could notice it’s covered in bandages, and one with a deeper understanding would notice they’re useless, as people like them can’t scare, at least forever. At some point they’ll fade back into the skin. Hidden messages once again forever hidden.
The other man starts saying, “Hoping someone will help break their fall?” Often times in their experience, humans are too trusting, especially of people they don’t know. Now while the two men don’t understand the human brain to the fullest, they know it’s human nature to take for only themselves. Never another person. Now they aren’t sure as for why, maybe its greed taking them by the throat and not letting go. But the humans do it regardless.
The brunette pulls his first true friend up off the park bench and makes them face-to-face. “They will pray, curse, live, die” he names off many of the actions they’ve both seen humans fall to. To pray for something that would never happen. To curse the heavens for the situation they did themselves. To live the course of their pitiful lives, and to die once they’ve done all they could, regardless of if they made their short existence worth it or not. “Never knowing their truth is another man’s lie”. Donning a serious expression, he looks his complaining straight in the eyes.
The blond nods and continues “eat, sleep, love, hate, like a leaf blowing in the wind” all these things he’s just listed off are things humans will do regardless of where they go on life. It will happen, for them to live without is for a shirt existence.
“Watch them all vacillate!” He returns to his cheery presence, once again going to ignore how he acts whenever he’s serious like all the other times in the past. He grabs his friend's hands tighter and turns around, he starts leading them away from the bench, closer to the water that was nearer to the couple from earlier. “They’re only human?”
“They can’t see.” The blond shakes his head, once again, the action being repeated often. He stares at his reflection, his longer yellowish hair neatly tucked into a ponytail, the serious resting face he has, even after talking to his friend. The familiar glasses that nowadays often bring a weird sense of comfort.
“All the years they could give you and me?” The brunette questions, while staring at his own reflection. The bandages covering his arms. The short, brown, slightly curly hair that seems the frame his face. The unnerving, almost unrealistic eyes he uses. He and his friend could never get the human eyes perfect. They always look fake. ‘Artificially created’ you could say.
“Only human after all” the taller says, now looking at his friend's reflection. And in turn, the other man meets his reflections eyes.
“So, they give, and they take.” The shorter says, quickly looking away whilst standing up. He looks up at the sky that is almost completely dark now. With the sun setting a while ago, neither man had noticed until now. But as the stars shone down upon them. He realised something about the humans.
“Till their silly hearts break.” The blonde had mumbled back, still looking at his friend's reflection, even if the man was turned around. Humans are so complicated, but they… they don’t seem too crazy.
The brunette turns back, and slightly points up at the heavens “looking down from above”. What was he thinking, would their superiors even allow them to integrate with the humans? Not properly, but it wouldn’t hurt to try.
“I’m intrigued by their love”. The blonde can see where the brunette is going with this, but it might be fun for a while so, who came blame him.
“So, let’s call?” Dazai asked. Already knowing the answer.
“Let’s call” kunikida replied, always going to follow his friend, regardless of if they go against his ideals.
