Work Text:
"Come on, Yeonjun. That's not even a challenge!" Beomgyu scoffed, rolling his eyes as he tuned his guitar. He stayed still on the couch of their school's common room, eyes scanning and watching as people entered through the door.
Yeonjun, the one sitting across him on the mat just tsked loudly. "Just say you're too much of a coward." He smirked, "I bet you can't take the next person to walk through that door on a date!"
"Girls and boys alike would die to have a date with me, you know? I am the Choi Beomgyu, if you're forgetting." Beomgyu stated, he pulled his guitar out of his lap and placed it besides him.
"Oh! Oh! How about..." Huening Kai trailed off, catching the attention of both the other boys, "the loser cleans up the sweat filled jersey of the team! In front of the whole school." He added the last part with a mischievous grin on his face.
Yeonjun and beomgyu looked at each other for a while, before Yeonjun smirked and Beomgyu furrowed his eyebrows as they both said at the same time, "game on."
The three of them waited patiently as they watched the common room's door upon and, with Beomgyu's heart hampering every second, his eyes opened wide, and his heart dropped when he realized the person to walk in.
There was a moment of silence as the three boys let the information sink in.
"KANG TAEHYUN!?" Huening Kai yelled out loud, and started laughing as if he was going crazy. Everyone probably heard him, as Taehyun looked at them with a stink eye before turning his head away and talking to the person who walked after him, his friend Choi Soobin.
"Good luck with that one, bro!" Yeonjun said as he laughed along with Huening Kai, while patting Beomgyu on the shoulder as he still looked completely shocked by the upturn of events.
"God damn it..." he muttered against his breath, taking the guitar and walking out of the door, he could still hear Hyuka's and Yeonjun's laugh from across the room, yet he chooses to ignore it.
Beomgyu smiled as he watched Taehyun enter the cafe. Taehyun who was known for how cold hearted he was. Taehyun, who was the son of a highly respected general. Taehyun who was also the representative of the school for the 1st years, had great grades and part of the student council.
Taehyun who was fully out of his league.
"Mind if I sit here, senorita?" Beomgyu swiftly said, but cringed in his mind realizing that he wasn't talking to a girl. He felt relived when Taehyun didn't answer and look at him, as he took a sit beside Taehyun. He watched as Taehyun paid no attention to him, still staring at the book in his hand and enjoying his caramel macchiato.
Beomgyu wasn't one to give up easily though, he had a name to live up to. The reputation he built for himself wasn't going to coward down in front of someone like Taehyun. (Even though he realizes that Taehyun has a bigger reputation than him to hold onto.)
"I wrote a song about you, wanna hear it?" Beomgyu grinned, patting his guitar which was kindly seated on his lap. He felt his eyes shimmer with hope when Taehyun sighed and closed his book, staring at Beomgyu dead in his eyes.
"And destroy my ears? No, thank you." He stated with not a single flinch before standing up, taking his caramel macchiato and book with him as he walked out of the cafe.
(Well, at least he said 'thank you'; that's a first!)
Taehyun was enjoying the lunch at the cafeteria, talking with his friend Soobin about some stuffs that even I, as the narrator, don't know of. He was sheepishly whispering it in Soobin's ears as Soobin let out quiet giggles behind the hand covering his mouth.
Choi Soobin, the one with black hair and a gigantic figure. His face and height made people feel intimidated by him, but he was known as the campus' sweetheart for his loveliness and easy-going nature. (But Taehyun would say otherwise, an iron hand in a velvet glove was what soobin was in his eyes. Having everyone wrapped around his pinkie.)
But their peaceful lunch was to be destroyed. And yep! You have guessed correctly, by none other than~ (can we please play drum rolls in the background?)
Choi Beomgyu!!
Beomgyu looked like a puppy who was finally once again reunited with his owner, smiling brightly as he jogged towards Taehyun and his friend.
"Kang!" His voice echoed in the cafeteria, people turning to look at him and what he was up to. Some already had ideas of their own, theories to be more precise. That it was a dare, a bet. Another, it was actually that Beomgyu had pinning secretly on Taehyun for long and he was now planning to confess (sooner or later, who knows?)
The latter did seem close... didn't it?
He had a paper in his hand, which he held close to his chest to not show anyone. Taehyun and Soobin turned to look what the whole commotion was about, the silvernette immediately regretted once he saw the shit eating grin on Beomgyu's face.
He sat beside Taehyun and gave the paper to Taehyun who hesitantly took it. Soobin peeking behind on his shoulder, because he's noisy like that.
The paper was turned upside down, Taehyun couldn't see what it was about unless he turned it over. He prayed to whatever God out there to not make it turn out to be a love song.
But Fate had worse plans, it seemed.
As soon as he turned the paper, he could practically feel the way Soobin snorted loudly, choking on his food. It probably went through the wrong pipe as he kept on wheezing out of laughter or choking out of laughter, both seem correct.
"Look, I drew you!" Beomgyu exclaimed with a smile, the smile looked like that of a 6-year-old child showing his art piece to his father with full on excitement and hope and not realizing what he had just done.
Taehyun didn't realize that was him. No one would think that was him. Taehyun, who had bright doe eyes, with an angular-sharp jaw line, full plump lips, lightly tan skin and fluffy silver hair. He knows that it's hard to replicate people, he's an artist himself, of course he would know!
But as he stared at the page, he wondered if living was a mistake. He ought to have died earlier than to see himself like this. (Was it that bad or was he over-exaggerating? The narrator doesn't know.) He looked like a pig in heat, not a cat, not a bitch, like a freaking pig. And pigs don't get in heat.
He could feel the people behind him, watching with worried gazes and also trying to stop their laughter as they all stared at the page, they could only wish that Beomgyu would be alive after this.
He placed the paper on the table and stood up. Leaving his food as he started walking away with his head down; curse you Choi Beomgyu!
"Better luck next time dude." Soobin said with a smile and a pat on Beomgyu's shoulder as he left the cafeteria chasing after Taehyun.
(Beomgyu made a mental note to himself; attempt number: 2 failed miserably.)
Beomgyu slumped against his locker, he was dead tired from all the work and from all the questions from the stunt he pulled at yesterday's lunch time. Everyone seemed to be curious on how Taehyun had let him go without fracturing at least one of his body parts and he questioned so too.
"Tough challenge buddy?" Yeonjun said looking at him with a glint of trouble in his eyes, he looked like a fox plotting something.
"You know you can always gi-" but before Yeonjun could even complete the sentence Beomgyu stopped him.
"No." He stated firmly, his grip on the flowers and the box he was holding tightening, "I'm not giving up, not until the challenge is over."
Yeonjun shrugged, "you do you, I guess." He said with a smirk, adding, "although, I can't wait to see you washing my jersey in front of the whole school."
Beomgyu scoffed, "we'll see if that happens." His eyes then caught Taehyun in front of his own locker, and he abruptly stood up, startling Yeonjun. "I need to go." He said, running towards Taehyun leaving Yeonjun behind in shock.
"It has been a long time since he's been so determined, hasn't it?" Huening Kai mumbled, coming out of nowhere as he watched Beomgyu race towards Taehyun and bumping into students.
"The last time he was so determined about a bet was when you said you'll buy him lunch for a whole month if he'll win." Hyuka snorted at the memory, still remembering how Beomgyu broke inside the headmistress' office to steal one of Yeonjun's result paper and alter them.
(They were caught in the end, and heavily punished but it was worth it according to Beomgyu.)
Yeonjun nodded with a smile, knowing why their best friend was going through such lengths. "Yeah..." He whispered against his breathe; he knew the truth even if Beomgyu seemed to not realize it.
Beomgyu panted loudly when he finally arrived at Taehyun's locker. Taehyun didn't notice it at first but eventually he did. And he slammed his locker shut before walking away.
"Wait, Kang! Wait!!" Beomgyu shouted not too loudly, because he didn't want to catch the eyes of other people. He let out a small smile when he noticed Taehyun stop but not turning to meet his eyes.
Beomgyu made his way in front of him, his hands behind his back trying to hide something which Taehyun couldn't see. Taehyun raised his eyebrows in question, egging him on to say it or stop wasting his time.
"About yesterday, I wanted to apologize about it." Beomgyu's head was hung low as if he was embarrassed, and he was. His ears were red so was his face. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to embarrass you in front of so many students like that."
"But you still did embarrass me in front of them, didn't you?" Taehyun said, tilting his head towards the right and his hands folding on his chest.
Beomgyu scratched the back of his nose, standing awkwardly. "Yeah... I did, but I didn't mean to..." He uttered, not meeting eyes with Taehyun who was throwing daggers at him with just his gaze. "Uh, would flowers make up for it?"
Beomgyu looked so hopeful as he held the red roses up and Taehyun bit the inside of his cheek to stop himself from smirking.
"I have pollen allergy, that means I'm allergic to flowers, Choi." Okay, Beomgyu did not know that. He had heard somewhere that Taehyun liked red roses (weird considering his 'reputation' of being a cold-hearted person.)
Taehyun just so slightly smiled once he saw the hopeful look on Beomgyu drop, he felt good about it, curse him all you want for that. But Beomgyu wasn't one to bow down to defeat easily, he pulled out his other hand which was a box.
"Would a box of chocolate suffice?" He said with a hopeful look, but he looked uncertain. He had also heard somewhere that Taehyun loved sweets and chocolate, he only hoped it was true.
Taehyun pulled his head up in a thinking way, putting his hand under his chin while lightly tapping it as if he was deep in thoughts. "Maybe." Taehyun said, with a small smile which quickly disappeared as he took the box of chocolate and left hastily.
Beomgyu was too stunned on his feet, did Taehyun smile at him or were his eyes devising him? He turned on his heel but to no avail, he couldn't see Taehyun anywhere. He probably left in a hurry.
(Beomgyu smiled to himself while lying on his bed that night, as he replayed the image of Taehyun smiling at him multiple times. And if Yeonjun and Huening Kai heard squealing noises, they did not question it.)
Taehyun looked around the empty area while trying to find the person who called him up here, he had an idea about who it could be. But he didn't let it entertain his mind in case he turns out wrong.
Though his mind turned out to be right.
"Choi, what do you want from me now?" Taehyun asked cautiously, he could tell from the smile that Beomgyu had that he was up to no good.
Beomgyu walked towards him, taking his hand, feeling proud and also surprised, when Taehyun allowed him to take it.
"Well how about spending your Sunday afternoon, exploring the school-" he moved Taehyun alongside him, and Taehyun moved mindlessly. Not realizing they had stepped over the boundary of the school's terrace. And that he was now floating on air because of Beomgyu's magic.
-" ON A HOT AIR BALLON!" Beomgyu shouted, smiling brightly as the hot air balloon started moving and floating along the wind. Taehyun stumbled a little, finding himself fall onto Beomgyu's chest who caught him by his waist.
"I'm scared of heights, Choi!" Taehyun exclaimed, hiding himself in Beomgyu's chest who laughed, never expecting Taehyun to be scared but you learn something new every day, don't you? Beomgyu held him tightly before pulling him away a little.
"You don't have to worry as long as I'm here." He replied with that same shit-eating grin of his. Taehyun hated it as much as he had grown to love it. He nodded lightly, pulling away completely and was in awe as he watched the castle (their school building which looked almost like a castle.)
"Where did you even find this?" Asked Taehyun, completely mesmerized by the hot air balloon. The view from the top was certainly the best view he had seen in a while.
"Magic." Beomgyu replied, giggling as Taehyun pouted at the reply, and punching him on his shoulder lightly. Beomgyu just ruffled his hair, shocking himself because of how soft it was.
They were up in the sky, so they didn't have to worry about other people catching them together. It was just them that moment, sealing it with giggles and magic.
"Did you enjoy it?" Beomgyu said as they were seated at the veranda of their school. His voice had a tiny bit of anxiousness in it, he knew that him and Taehyun weren't exactly in the great terms.
"Every bit of it." Taehyun supplied, watching as the sun was about to set from how long they were at it. He smiled brightly, his dimples poking at his cheeks.
They were sitting side by side, close enough that their arms brushed against each other, and their fingers mingled together. But also, it's never too close.
Beomgyu shyly but also with lots of courage laced their hands together. He smiled as he realized that he was a right-hand user and Taehyun was a left-hand user, meaning they could hold hands easily in class.
Taehyun looked shocked by the gesture but smiled to himself.
Silence unfolded around them as they say watching the sunset, it was a beautiful sight but not more beautiful than the feeling that was blooming inside their hearts.
"Beomgyu... actually, I- uh..." Taehyun stuttered. Beomgyu was too shocked about it that he didn't even realize that Taehyun just called him by his last name instead of his first name.
"I've never been on a date before..." Taehyun whispered, his cheeks and ears red as a cherry. Beomgyu almost missed it because of how low his voice was when he said it. Beomgyu's breath hitched as he let the words sink it.
"What we did today... that was like a date, you know?" Beomgyu said softly, eyes staring at Taehyun who was too flustered to look at him.
"I know but, I don't want it to be a date if you're just doing this for a bet, especially not when I have started to like you." Taehyun blushed when he said that. Beomgyu's eyes twinkled brightly before he realized what he had said.
"Wait, you knew this was for a bet?"
Taehyun turned to look at him with a deadpan look, "I'm not dumb, if that's what you think I am." He stated, "your friends and you aren't exactly that good at hiding as you seem to think." He giggled when he saw the look Beomgyu was giving him.
He moved closer to Beomgyu who stared at his face with anticipation, "but..." He trailed off moving his mouth to Beomgyu's ear, "If you swallow your pride and accept defeat for this bet, I'll let you take me out on a real date."
His cold breathes hitting Beomgyu's cheek made Beomgyu shiver lightly, and Taehyun took pride in that fact.
"Really?" Asked Beomgyu, voice coming out breathless and his wide eyes shining as he looked at Taehyun who nodded with a small smile. He gulped before nodding as well, "alright."
Taehyun let out a bright smile, his dimples poking and his cat-like small canines visible. He inched closer to Beomgyu who held his breath and kissed his cheek before pulling away immediately.
"Great! I'll see you on Thursday." Taehyun said before walking away. Beomgyu was too stunned to speak, he pulled his hand up and touch the area Taehyun had kissed.
And before he could even return to his sense, the younger had already left.
"I better not see any dirt on there, okay beomgyu?" Yeonjun taunted, beomgyu knew he was just doing it for the show and joke, but he really wished to punch the older right now.
He was cleaning their jerseys in front of the whole school like the punishment had been told. He could hear the giggles and laughter coming from the students, some even recording him for blackmail purposes because it's not every day you get to see Beomgyu lose a bet.
Distantly his eyes met Taehyun's who winked at him before walking away as if he didn't just make Beomgyu's heart do a flip or two.
Beomgyu sighed dreamingly, his eyes at a daze as he stared at Taehyun walk away. He might have lost the challenge but at least he won Taehyun's heart.
The end is just the beginning.
