Work Text:

Tsukumo sits beside a hospital bed, staring down at his unconscious boyfriend. Sugiura looks so much better now, his wound stitched closed, and the blood cleaned from his skin, but he is still unconscious, and has been since being attacked by a baseball bat. And Tsukumo can't help but remember the way he looked in the ambulance, a brace around his neck as the paramedics took his vital signs, and Tsukumo cried and silently begged for his partner to wake up. Once they arrived at the hospital, he barely left Sugiura's side long enough for his boyfriend to have a CT scan and Tsukumo himself was taken for an X-ray and had his broken finger set and bandaged. Since then, he has sat beside the bed, waiting for Sugiura to wake up.

Finally, after what feels like forever, Sugiura groans and his eyelids flutter.  He turns his head, staring at Tsukumo with unfocused eyes. He grimaces, clearly in a lot of pain from his head injury (Tsukumo can sympathise; his broken finger hurts so much that he wants to throw up).

"Makoto..." he mumbles, his voice slurred. He never calls Tsukumo by his given name. They both do that, insisting on using each other's surnames despite being boyfriends. Yagami thinks they're absolute dorks.

"Y-Yes, it's me, Sugiura-shi," Tsukumo says. His uninjured hand reaches out to grasp Sugiura's hand, interlocking their fingers.

"Where... are we?"

"The hospital. You... you got hurt."

Sugiura squints in thought, clearly struggling to locate memories within his concussed mind. When he sets his jaw and curses through gritted teeth, it's obvious that he remembered the events of the evening. Of those men storming into their office and attacking them.

"Oh fuck! Makoto, are you okay? You're shaking," Sugiura says, tightening his grip on Tsukumo's trembling hand.

"Not really, to be totally honest," Tsukumo says. He wants to lie, but he just can't. "I was so scared. You got knocked out and for a moment I thought you were dead, and those men, they..."

Sugiura's gaze lands on his bandaged hand. "What the hell did they do to you?"

"They, um... broke my finger.," he says, and Sugiura tenses like he was punched.

"They won't get away with this," Sugiura says, rubbing his thumb against Tsukumo's knuckles.

"Don't get yourself worked up. You need to rest." Tsukumo smiles weakly, leaning down to kiss his boyfriend's cheek. "But thank you for caring about me."

"How could I not?" Sugiura says, flashing a groggy smile. "You're my partner."

And Tsukumo's smile broadens, his eyes filling with tears.
