Guide of Locations in Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System (And timeline)

Summary:

AN OVERALL GUIDE TO THE LOCATIONS IN SCUM VILLAIN - A REFERENCE FOR WRITERS

An overwhelming thank you to @stardust_falling who helped me!

This is something that we worked on the last week, trying to really pin down a reference for where things are in Scum Villain because I’m very visual when it comes to that and I like fantasy worlds to have maps. There is a map that accompanies this piece. This piece may be updated and improved based on reception from the fandom and the general accuracy of it since some of it comes from many different references.

Originally this document has footnotes, because there isn’t a function for that on AO3 I will try my best to list them out at the end in the notes section

THERE ARE A LOT OF SPOILERS — PLEASE ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK

Notes:

Settle in kids, mom just made some meta for dinner

SPOILERS ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE READ WITH CAUTION!! I really don’t suggest this if you haven’t read all the SVSSS novels!

Currently being revised and updated (10/29/2023)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

              • A library or study in the back of the bamboo house, with a stack of records and ancient books that each head disciple must read in full before becoming a peak lord

          • Last 3 courtesy of fellow fan: Zhui Xing Luo Chen <3
      • Peak Lord’s Seniority — based on the rank of the Peak itself (not age/when they join Cang Qiong)
        • “Shidi” - Younger Brother
        • “Shixiong” - Older Brother
        • “Shimei” Younger Sister
        • “Shijie” Older Sister
        • “Shifu” - Teacher
        • “Shizun” - Master/Role Model (more respectful than Shifu/less familiar)
      • Peak Ranks — In order that the founders of each peak made a name for themselves and became famous (qijiu extras pt. 5)
        • For example, Qiong Ding Peak is the ruling Peak of the Cang Qiong Mountain Sect and the oldest. Making it the highest ranking peak (Currently ruled by Yue Qingyuan)
          • Thus: Yue Qingyuan is the highest ranking peak lord

  • Ling Xi Caves - Qiong Ding Peak - Cang Qiong is in the East

      • A labyrinth with a thousand twists and turns before opening into a “strange and beautiful different world”
      • There is no wind or moon, it is cool and quiet
      • White stones like clouds and green stones like jade created wonders large and small as well as natural stone beds
      • At the center lays a pool of clear water that reflects like a mirror
      • The only thing that marred its beauty was gashes and gouges made by both blade and sword glares. The stone walls were further plastered with swathes of dried blood, the stains had already blackened — this was one cavern of many
      • Appears after the Skinner Demon arc — Shen Qingqiu goes there to cultivate in seclusion after giving Binghe a proper training manual
      • Located at the back of Qiong Ding Peak’s mountain side
        • Qiong Ding Peak has the best accumulation of energies from Heaven and Earth
        • Cāng Qióng Shān Pài (pinyin) = Heavenly Dome Mountain Sect
      • Best place to cultivate because it has so much energy and requires much less effort — twice the results in half the time — only the sect’s senior members and outstanding disciples could request the sect leader for access.
      • “I heard that they’ll shut disciples and other sect members inside who are experiencing qi deviation or resorted to unnatural paths” (SJ says this)
      • Shen Qingqiu (Shen Jiu) goes here for seclusion and nearly qi deviates — Yue Qingyuan joins him
      • Shen Qingqiu (After Skinner arc [see first bullet point]) cultivates here in seclusion for a few months (few = 2-3) and comes out to find Cang Qiong is invaded by demons (led by Shua Hualing)
        • Goes to Qiong Ding Peak’s Gate where the demons are
        • Shua Hualing suggests a match between both sides
        • Shen Qingqiu is poisoned with Without-A-Cure

  • Although called Without-A-Cure, it can be repressed with an herb that Mu Qingfang prescribes to Shen Qingqiu
  • Shen Yuan is aware that the only cure is dual cultivation with a heavenly demon

      • Where we meet Liu Qingge for the first time while he is experiencing a Qi Deviation caused by cultivating alone
        • Shen Qingqiu (Shen Yuan) helps him, even though the original flavor (Shen Jiu) lets him die at this moment; killing off Liu Qingge in PIDW.
        • After this, their relationship as friends and allies is defined
          • Much later in the novel series Liu Qingge is perceived to have a small crush on Shen Qingqiu (See extras when they enter the succubus caves and gifts Shen Qingqiu with a short haired monster he caught
            • which Shen Qingqiu cannot fathom killing and then raises for the next few years (later on Liu Qingge brings him another one which he refuses since the first monster is still alive)
            • Liu Qingge fights every single day and night with Luo Binghe to retrieve Shen Qingqiu’s dead body over the 5 years it took for Shen Qingqiu to grow the Sun-Moon Dew Mushroom body and come back. He never wins against Binghe but never gives up either.

  • The Dream Realm - Appears in Chapters 17 - 21, 59 - 60, 62, 72 - Inside Luo Binghe’s Consciousness

      • Where Meng Mo (no real body)
        • Resides inside Luo Binghe’s Dream Realm, when he is stronger he can visit others (holy mausoleum)
        • Teaches Luo Binghe how to control the dream realm and about demonic cultivation
        • A parasite like creature— has no real body as it was destroyed several hundred years earlier
          • Survives by absorbing a victim’s spiritual energy and vitality (Luo Binghe, as the OP protagonist, is the perfect vessel for him)
        • A ball of black fog - original appearance was an old man in luxury clothing and sharp hawk-like eyes
        • He helps Luo Binghe with plots and plans, often giving his opinion on the matters at hand and seeming to be able to ‘see’ all the Binghe does unless Binghe blocks him out
      • If the dreamer attacks any ‘person’ in their dream it would just hurt the dreamer themself
        • By hurting the dream ‘people’ the dreamer can end up being severely hurt, dead or in a coma/“eternal sleep”
        • Attacking the ‘people’ is attacking their own brain/nervous system
      • The only way to break free of the dream is to resolve inner turmoil and tangles within one’s own heart — thus defeating the dream
        • The dreams can exploit all emotions of the dreamer, even hidden or especially negative ones like terror or rage
        • The more the dreamer feels, the greater the damage they receive
      • Luo Binghe learned to master the dream realm — he can recreate a city with its many residents on a large scale and use emotions hidden in the dreamer’s heart to manipulate/terrorize them
      • Meng Mo’s Specialty — Nightmare Dream Realm
        • Summons the human heart’s deepest terror/rage/misery (etc.) to destroy the dreamer’s psychological defenses
        • The more agitated the dreamer, the more danger they’re in
        • Illusory ‘people’ in the dreams from the victim’s own mind consciousness can appear to manipulate and instigate these feelings
        • To defeat this nightmare realm, see above for defeating the dream realm itself
        • Effects of attacking the ‘people’ tormenting the dreamer: coma or death
          • A coma is perfect for Meng Mo because his victim is still alive and thus he can feed off their spiritual energy and vitality
      • Luo Binghe masters this technique by the end of Book 3

  • Huan Hua Palace - Located in the South

      • Last ranking sect
      • Protected by maze arrays
      • Immortal Master Lao Gongzhu is the old head of Huan Hua Palace
      • Practices a number of different cultivation schools BUT specialize in illusions, mazes, and concealment.
      • Richest sect & fund most Immortal Alliance Conferences
      • Has the most contact with the outside world

  • Ling Hua Domain — demolished by LQG in ch 10
  • Main Hall — close to Huan Hua Pavilion
  • Huan Hua Pavilion — Where the palace masters live/cultivate

      • Sect members are divided into many different domains similar to how CQM is divided into 12 peaks
      • The Water Prison is located beneath their foundations
        • Used to hold most notorious criminals of the cultivation world before trial
        • This world’s public prison system
        • Only those with Huan Hua Palace's authorization pass can enter the Water Prison freely.
        • A white, stone platform in the center of the lake. The water is corrosive, and once the prisoner is on the platform via a stone pathway that is triggered by a mechanism in the wall to rise from under the lake; a curtain of water is triggered by a mechanism in the wall with a key, which surrounds the platform with no possible escape without the risk of touching the corrosive liquid
        • Once the Water Prison is activated, one person must remain on the platform, otherwise the curtain will automatically activate if there isn’t enough weight on the platform — this will activate even if the Water Prison’s airtight curtain mechanism is turned off/deactivated
          • In other words — without something to weigh the platform down, there will always be a curtain of water around it. It will only open with a key/special access pass only specific members of the Huan Hua Sect have access to (likely only senior members of the sect).
          • Even then, without a counterweight, the curtain will be down and leaves no room for escape by oneself.
            • Shen Qingqiu escapes thanks to Gongyi Xiao, who remains on the platform in his stead.
      • Ling Hua Dart was created here by a Huan Hua Palace elder — Mobei-Jun gets afflicted with it in Airplane Extras (Book 4).
      • Mobei-Jun has major beef with the Huan Hua Palace
        • His once dearly trusted uncle threw him into the human realm and let a heap of thug cultivators chase around this completely uncomprehending, terrified-out-of-his-mind little demon who’d trip and fall every few steps he ran
        • They caught and locked him in the water prison for weeks until he was freed by his father who noticed he was missing
        • Mobei-Jun was the equivalent age to a 4 year old child
        • Due to the trauma he barely speaks with anyone and never looked at his uncle again

  • Tian Yi Temple - Located in the Central Plains

      • Second ranking sect
      • Priests of Tian Yi Temple practice Daoist cultivation
        • The Dao, which means "the way," is the natural order of the universe
        • Daoists strive to be in harmony with this natural order. Rather than following particular rules, Daoists cultivate a sense of naturalness, called ziran.
        • By being in tune with ziran, they believe they can avoid violence, suffering, and struggle

  • Zhao Hua Monastery - Located in the East

      • Third ranking sect
      • Current Leader - Wu Wang
      • Renowned for its barrier techniques and abilities to be mediators.
      • A quiet, secluded, dignified, and ancient building seated halfway up a verdant ancient mountain.
      • In the monastery, there is a Hall of Great Strength, which is the main hall in a traditional Buddhist Temple and where the sect holds conferences with outsiders.
      • The temple itself is defended by barrier protections that keep out and repel demonic qi
      • Monks from Zhao Hua Monastery practice Buddhist cultivation
        • Buddhism teaches that by controlling desire and limiting suffering, this path could lead a person to spiritual enlightenment
        • The Eightfold Path requires a great deal of self-sacrifice and dedication: leaving behind worldly affairs and devoting their lives to attaining spiritual enlightenment
        • Includes: vows of celibacy and poverty, meditating, and abstaining from violence

  • An Old Tea House - Downstream of the Luo River - Located within an old city (unnamed) (Assumed to be near Huan Hua Palace - South)

      • Where Su Xiyan and Tianlang-Jun meet/fall in love
      • On one occasion, the Old Palace Master and Su Xiyan followed the requests of a village and went to exterminate demonic creatures.
      •  When they were returning back to the Palace, they encountered an old city downstream from Luo Chuan. In that city, demons and other evil beings were running rampant.
      • There were not many left of the city’s original population. However, Su Xiyan was able to meet a young man (Tianlang-Jun) that was out alone in a tea house
      • Su Xiyan meets Tianlang-Jun here often, until one day they decide to meet in Bai Lu Forest (Per old palace master’s request in order to catch Tianlang-Jun
        • When they met she would usually bring Tianlang-Jun and Zhuzhi-Lang gifts such as banned books, rare Lingzhi (Fungus with spiritual properties), and a courtesan who played the pipa
        • Often when they didn’t meet Su Xiyan would disappear for 10 - 14 days (presumably with Tianlang-Jun)

  • Bai Lu Forest - Located at the edge of Huan Hua’s territory (South)

      • Where the Sun-Moon Dew Mushroom can be found in a dark cave
        • Guarded by a pale bloated snake-like creature/demon (Zhuzhi-Lang - half-human form)
        • Gongyi Xiao (Huan Hua Palace) and Shang Qinghua (An Ding Peak) accompany Shen Qingqiu to this location
      • Located on Bai Lu Mountain under which Tianlang-Jun was once sealed.
        • Imprisoned under 72 iron chains
        • Zhuzhi-Lang was struck by Old Palace Masters “Heaven’s Wrath” technique (heavenly thunderbolts) and returned to his half-human form (original form) while trying to protect his master, Tianlang-Jun
      • Where Su Xiyan and Tianlang-Jun met for a final time and
      • Su Xiyan and Tianlang-Jun met here 2x a month on a regular schedule as she was “spying” for her master
        • The Old Palace Master told every sect about this, and said Tianlang-Jun (ruler of north and southern sides of the demon realm at the time) was going to attack them all and loot the sects — they devised a plan to catch Tianlang-Jun first, at Su Xiyan’s expense. (Ch 69) (See footnote 8)

  • Luo River (Luo Chuan [chuan = river]) - Rises in the South East of Mount Hua, flows East into Henan, where it joins the Yellow River at the city Gongyi (Gongyi is a real place in China, not from the novel— but might be a good location to put Jin Lan city).

      • In modern China, this may refer to many different rivers:
        • Luohe (Henan) - Tributary of the Yellow River, flows mostly in Henan province
        • Luohe (Shaanxi) - aka North Luo River, a river in the Shaanxi province and 2nd largest tributary to the Wei River (longest tributary to the Yellow River)
        • Luohe (Guangdong) - a river in the Guangdong province, flows into South China Sea
        • Luojiang (Fujian) - river in Fujian, flows into Quanzhou Bay of Taiwan Strait
      • Where Su Xiyan died after giving birth to Luo Binghe (Upper Reaches of Luo River) (In winter)
        • Helped by Grandmaster Wu Chen after being forced to drink a poison to kill/abort Luo Binghe by the Old Palace Master

  • Recall Luo Binghe gets his name from floating down the Luo River (aka Luo Chuan) directly after birth and found by a local fishermen
  • Later he is adopted by a local washerwoman at about 4-5 years old off the streets
  • She raises him as her own, before he enters Cang Qiong, until her death

          • Luo Binghe’s namesake:
            • Binghe = glacier (taken from the characters ‘ice and river’) Luo= Luo River (also sounds like ‘lowered’) his name describes his origins literally - ‘lowered into [the] icy river’
          • It’s presumed he only survived due to his Demon ancestry

  • Streets Where Luo Binghe Grew Up - Somewhere along the Luo River

      • We know that Luo Binghe was floated down the river as an infant and found by locals of a village somewhere along the line
      • Likely close to the upper reaches of the Luo River - South East
        • Because how else would an infant survive that long on an icy river in the middle of winter (even if we go by protagonist halo standards)?
      • Where Binghe and his mother lived
        • She died from illness
        • She gave him the Fake Jade Guanyin necklace
        • Her illness - heartbreak (presumably after being tricked into buying the Guanyin pendant at a high price — “Heartbroken, her body quickly deteriorating afterward: this was a pain that would never dissolve in Luo Binghe’s life.”
      • City-like landscape, where there is a range of noble to poor residents (this is assumed because of the wealth/power imbalance between those that mistreat/bully street kids and him and his mother)
        • Luo Binghe endures a beating from the sons of a noble residence they were servants at in order to get his mother some congee
        • She died before she could eat it

  • The Borderlands - Located between the Human and Demon Realms

      • Where the barrier between Human and Demon realms are thin and one can pass through without crossing the Endless Abyss
      • Frequently raided by some demons - very few humans live here (garrisons of cultivators remain as guards there)

  • Chi Yun Cave - Demon Realm - Assumed to be located near the Borderlands (They visit a tea shop in the borderlands after being here)

      • Where Shua Hualing takes vessels she is gathering for Luo Binghe to use to control his demonic qi
      • Liu Mingyan (Xian Shu Peak) and Yang Yixuan (Bai Zhan Peak) were captive here before being rescued by a ‘mysterious elder’ (Shen Qingqiu)

  • A Tea Shop - Borderlands - near Chi Yun Cave

      • Liu Mingyan, Yang Yixuan and Shen Qingqiu (Sun-Moon Dew Mushroom body) visit here after escaping Shua Hualing and rescuing all her cultivator prisoners from Chi Yun Cave

  • Qiu Family Household - Location unknown

      • Where Shen Jiu grew up after living on the streets (12 years old) becoming a slave to the Qiu Family until the age of 15
      • Title was changed to foster-brother instead of a slave to the Qiu family - Qiu Haitang gets engaged to Shen Jiu when he is 15
      • Wu Yanzi takes in Shen Jiu as a disciple - initiating his desire to escape the household and become a cultivator
      • Entire property was burned down and destroyed one night after Shen Jiu snapped and killed most if not all the male house-servants and Qiu Haitang’s elder brother
        • Qiu Haitang misunderstands Shen Jiu’s relationship with her brother, who she thought carried a family bond
        • Her elder brother abused and mistreated Shen Jiu until he snapped
      • Qiu Haitang appears after Luo Binghe’s reunion with Shen Qingqiu in Jin Lan City — she is there to cement “Shen Jiu’s official fall from grace” by telling the “truth” of what happened to a crowd of thousands after the Sower Demons are caught
        • One Sower calls out to Shen Qingqiu for help, causing suspicion just before Qiu Haitang speaks up
      • The household no longer exists and Qiu Haitang is the hallmaster or teacher  of a miscellaneous small sect at the time of the Sowers arc

  • Endless Abyss - Between the Human and Demon Realms

      • Where Luo Binghe’s three-year training arc before he reemerges as a Demon Lord
      • “Within red clouds glowing like a volcanic crater, one could faintly make out countless arms and howling heads, struggling and heaving, twisted in a thousand expressions of agony, like a scene from hell”
      • “A liminal space, it was full of peril and the unknown. Twisting, tearing vortices through space, raging flames and burning magma were everywhere to be found.”
