When Rhodey set down his phone for the last time, it was well past midnight, close to two o'clock. Still, he was finding it hard to sleep.
He rolled over to stare at the framed photo on his bedside table. Hawaii held the camera and was the only one smiling. Rhodey himself was on the couch in the background, annoyed, yelling about something or other. And there was Alaska, leaning on the back of the couch, giving a confused look at the camera.
Rhodey missed Alaska.
He wrapped his blanket closer to his chin. After four days, it no longer smelled like his nature loving boyfriend. God he missed Alaska. And after only four days!
He threw his blanket to the floor, because the fact that it smelled like his own shampoo was starting to get him down.
He knew he wouldn't be able to get to sleep. So he got to his feet instead.
It was quiet in the statehouse, for the most part. A rare thing. As he passed the southern wing, he could hear Louisiana's accented voice and Florida's classic chuckle. But besides that, the rest of the states seemed to be asleep (or at least using night time voices).
Then he went through the kitchens, living rooms, and all the rooms that were completely empty. He used his phone as a light, and a few times, he swung the light around to illuminate all the creepy corners of the house, but he kept walking.
At last he reached the door to the garage. He smiled at the handwritten sign: "Alaskan wilderness." The door creaked as he opened it, and he shivered at the cool air that swept out towards him.
He stumbled towards the futon. His phone light seemed darker here- he suspected that was due to the fact that Alaska, the darkest state, slept here.
He was about two seconds away from collapsing onto the futon when he realized that someone was already lying on it. He stumbled back and stifled a scream.
"Hawaii?" he whispered, once his eyes had adjusted enough to make out her flowing hair and flower PJs.
She opened one eye, then the other, and sat up. "Rh-Rhodey?" she croaked.
"Yeah. What… are you doing here?" As far as he knew, she was still on her islands.
She sighed and collapsed back onto the futon. "Cause Alaska. He doesn't get reception at the Iditarod so he couldn't call me the past few days and I miss him. You?"
Rhodey shrugged and crossed his arms. "Cause Alaska."
They stared at each other for a moment. She gave in first and smiled. "Alright, shorty. Get over here."
"You're not that much taller than me," he muttered, but he crawled in beside her and let her wrap her arms around him.
Here. This was perfect. He couldn't stop a smile from creeping onto his face. Not only could he smell Alaska's forest scent on the sheets, but Hawaii's sea salt hair was in his face as an added bonus.
He pulled her down towards him for a quick kiss, then relaxed into her warm embrace. It took a mere few minutes for both of them to be asleep into each other's arms.
