Chapter Text
Virgil and Remus had to go out for supplies. Logan insisted on going with them. Roman didn’t want him too.
"You did good before but this is dangerous." Roman said worried for the teen.
"I can handle it, and I'm not alone!" Logan said looking to Virgil to back him up.
"We won't let anything happen to him." Remus said lightly punching Roman in the arm. Roman didn’t look convinced.
"Fine, but You're only going to help carry things. And stay near the truck! And listen Remus...actually listen to Virgil." Roman said.
"Hey!" Remus said in offense to the last instruction.
"We'll be fine." Virgil said rolling his eyes. "Now let's go before Ro keeps us stuck here for another two hours." Roman watched them leave from the porch. It wasn't like they couldn't handle themselves. All of them had survived for months before. He couldn't shake the worry he felt.
"Love." Patton said hugging Roman.
"Yeah I know they'll be fine." Roman said.
---
"Okay! first thing on the list clothing!" Remus said after they had all got in the truck.
"I thought we were going for gas and food?" Logan said frowning.
"That too but you need some new clothing and I know those boots are worn out!" Remus said with a wink towards the teen.
"I'm fine! Really! We shouldn't risk our lives over that!" Logan said nervously.
"Relax, nothing is going to happen." Virgil said calmly. "Besides you aren't the only one that we're getting clothing for. I need new shoes."
"And we should find some new toys for Janus." Remus said. "Oh! Logan what boredom killing item do you want?"
"We don't need to-" Logan started.
"Kid, We aren't going out of our way for this stuff. We'll probably find it on our way for what we really need." Virgil said stopping Logan. "Also If I have to play one more game of candyland I'm setting the board on fire.
Remus laughed, "That’s because you keep losing to Janus."
"Well if Roman didn't stack the deck." Virgil grumbled.
"You can't be that upset about losing to the snakelet." Remus said.
"Snakelet, isn’t a word." Logan said.
"Snakeling??" Remus asked. "Whatever, who says what words are and aren't anymore?"
"people do." Logan said.
"Yeah and how many people are left?" Remus asked.
"We're picking up a dictionary if you decide YOU are the deciding factor on what is and isn’t a word! Virgil said.
Remus laughed. Logan looked out the window watching as they passed empty fields and abandoned houses.
He knew not to suggest to search the houses, they had done so before Logan had shown up with Patton. Going back to one of the same cities he had stayed in before seemed unnerving. It made him wonder if Remus and Virgil had gone searching for supplies there before. That there might have been a chance at getting help earlier.
Or if one of them found Patton without Logan and killed him without knowing. Logan folded his arms across his chest. He didn't like thinking about how many times they could have both died.
"Cheer up! I'm sure we'll find stuff you'll like." Virgil said. Logan hummed. It wasn't like they would find stuff he hadn't come across before.
---
Remus jumped out the truck and spread his arms out wide. "I missed this!" He said.
"Concrete?" Virgil asked following him out. Logan exiting from the other side.
"The freedom to go into any shop or store and take whatever I want!" Remus said. "It's a lot more fun when you aren't worried about the police."
"We have to worry about zombies, that's worse." Logan said grimly. He grabbed his backpack from the bed of the truck, Virgil and Remus grabbing bags to carry stuff with as well.
"Lighten up." Remus said, "We can deal with zombies!" Remus said patting the large hunting knife on his side.
Logan smiled, "I suppose you know what you're doing."
"He supposes." Remus said before taking off towards the store.
Virgil smiled fondly before walking besides Logan towards the building. It was dark inside with very little light shining in the glass doors. The store looked mostly undisturbed. Some stuff was clearly dropped or knocked over in a hurry but it had a thin layer of dust on everything. "Let's hope this place has batteries."
"Booze!" Remus yelled from toward the back of the grocery section. The fresh food had rotted and dried by this point. So had anything not boxed or canned.
"Hold on, I'm gonna go make sure he doesn't fill a whole bag with alcohol. You start grabbing stuff. Yell if you need anything." Virgil said going off towards the back of the store. "Don’t drink anything without checking it first!" Virgil yelled as he took off.
Logan stood at the entrance for a moment. He kinda wished Pat was here with him. He didn't feel as nervous with him here. Pat was good at keeping other zombies away.
Logan walked over towards the check out area, those tended to have more batteries. And candy. Not that Logan was looking for Candy. He was looking for batteries! if he happened to find candy then he could just pick it up at the same time. But he was looking for batteries.
Logan found candy and Batteries. Logan grabbed all the batteries and candy filling one of the pockets of his backpack. He didn't want to wander too far towards the back since it got dark back there. The light from the doors not reaching. But there was a light moving around on the back wall, one of the others had taken out a flashlight.
Logan wished he still had his flashlight. It was one of the many things that had been left behind when it got broken. There was a lot of stuff he wished he still had. Logan looked through a display of canned soup and thought it over. It wasn't too far out of the way to go see where he had set up camp. And they did say he could ask for anything he wanted.
He had some clothing and other things that fit him left there that he had found with Pat before. He had to leave them behind but with the truck it wouldn't be that hard to take them back with them.
Logan made up his mind to ask by the time Virgil returned with Remus in tow. Remus was holding a large cardboard box that rattled with the sound of glass inside. "I'll take this out to the truck. You guys find something to go with this!" He said before stepping outside. "God I miss pizza." He lamented as he left.
"Hey...were we going anywhere else?" Logan asked. "To look for stuff?"
"Well if we can't find what we want here." Virgil said watching Logan.
"I..know a place with a lot of clothing and stuff would be." Logan said. What if Virgil didn't believe him? Or didn't want to go further intot he city for it?
"Yeah?" Virgil said. "we can go there next if you want. You'll have to tell Remus tho, I'm not going to find it without a map."
"Yeah...I can do that." Logan said relieved that Virgil was open to the idea.
----
The building was an old two story bookshop that the entrance was blocked off by a set of bookshelves that Logan had pushed over to block it. There was a single window on the lower story near the back. "So I go in and I can move the book shelves out of the way for you guys to get in." Logan said climbing up onto a metal lawn chair to get to the window.
"How about I go in first." Remus suggested. "If something else is in there then you won't be trapped."
Logan frowned. "I blocked the whole thing off and we checked the doors. Nothing other than bugs could have gotten in."
Virgil crossed his arms. "How did Patton get in?"
"I let him in and out through the doors." Logan lied. Patton crawled in the window with him most of the time. But that was because he had shown Patton to do that! No one could have known this was anything other than a closed bookstore.
"We'll follow you in through the window and we can move the bookcases. You grab your stuff." Remus said.
Logan grumbled a bit at the way they didn't seem to trust him with this but relented. He climbed through the window. Virgil wiggling his way in a few seconds after.
Logan looked around the bookshop. This had been home for a long time. He set up here before Patton kept pushing to move on. Logan had fought him on it till Patton had started leaving on his own.
Logan headed for the stairs where he kept all his stuff. Virgil caught his arm as he took off. "Where are you going?"
"My stuff is upstairs." Logan said pointing towards the stairs. Virgil eyed the stairs with the door at the top. He looked over at Remus who was going over to move the bookcase. Remus shrugged at him.
"He lived here." Remus said grabbing the bookcase and dragging it away from the door. Virgil glared at him. "Go for it!" Remus said giving Logan permission.
Virgil let Logan go, waiting until he got up the stairs to talk to Remus.
"What the hell are you thinking?" Virgil hissed at him.
"I'm moving the bookcase so we can get Lo's stuff out." Remus said frowning at Virgil's behavior.
"Are you trying to get him hurt? or killed?" Virgil asked. "First you run off at the store now you send him upstairs alone?"
"We are all in the same building and if anything happens he is smart enough to call for help." Remus said scooting the bookcase clear of the door.
"So we just trust him with this?" Virgil asked. "He is a child!"
"No, he is thirteen and if we don't show at least a little bit of faith in him and his abilities then he is going to run off and actually get hurt!" Remus said sharply, his more at ease posture vanishing. "He's a teenager Virgil. You remember what being a teen was like. Nothing was in your control. He's living through the end of the world. Let him have some space."
Virgil looked at his boyfriend. "I hope you know what you're doing." He said.
Before Remus could reply there was a pained cry from upstairs.
