Jedi Trick

Summary:

Kanan shows Ezra a trick he picked up from his own master.

Notes:

Aaand day 2 of the Kanezra week, and the prompt is; cuddling.

This is a purely platonic fluff, I like the relationship these two have so much and I hope I captured it well.

Should be taking place somewhere in early season 1.

Work Text:

Ezra stirred awake, shivering in the cold of the makeshift camp he and Kanan had made the day before. During the day, the planet was cold enough, but at night? He eyed the fire that was only weakly fluttering. One would need an oven to hide in.

It was only the first night after a milk run gone wrong. After their contact revealed himself to be an imperial, Kanan managed to get himself and Ezra into an escape pod. The plan was for Hera to pick them up, but the imp really didn't want to be on the losing side. During the following firefight, the pod got damaged.

It was lucky they landed on the planet Chion in one piece. Ezra's eyes went to his master, and he found himself sitting up in shock as the enigmatic gunslinger was nowhere to be found. He almost called out the man's name but thought better of it, the surrounding wilderness responding in kind with a predator's howl.

Ezra scuttled closer to the dying fire, searching around for the logs they had collected yesterday. But found there were none except for small chips of wood. Fearing the loss of his only light source and warmth, he hastily picked up the wood and tossed it to the hungry fire and watched it be quickly consumed.

"Where are you, Kanan?" Ezra muttered to himself, hugging himself tighter. Kanan's coat was gone as well. The boy sighed miserably and watched his breath rise to the dark sky, taking the form of a misty cloud. Dark thoughts nagged at his tired mind. Why hasn't Hera showed up yet? Are they all alright? Could they have lost the fight? Did they need help? What if something happened to Kanan? What's gonna happen with Ezra if...

A twig snapped nearby, and Ezra started at the tall dark figure illuminated by a blue lightsaber. "Kanan!" Ezra cried out. Kanan made a shushing noise, looking around, deactivating his saber, and placing it to the ground along with new logs of wood, their ends charred black.

"Can't sleep?" Kanan's voice echoed softly in the dim light as he placed some of the wood into the fire. Ezra shook his head. "No," he admitted. "It's cold." His voice shivered with him as he stared longingly at Kanan's long coat. The Jedi raised an eyebrow, and then a comical realization spread in his expression. "Oh blast it, I'm sorry, kid," Kanan quickly shook off the leather piece of clothing and hastily wrapped Ezra in it. "I wasn't thinking; I should've known it would wake you up if I took it."

"Don't you need it?" Ezra asked, watching Kanan huddle in on himself as he propped his back against the metal wall they had raised yesterday against the wind.

"Oh no," Kanan waved his hand dismissively. He saw Ezra's doubtful face and added diplomatically, "Maybe out there. Here, I've got fire." Ezra could tell Kanan was lying. Maybe he had a sweater, but Ezra knew it wasn't made for the cold wind that made both of their sets of teeth clatter. On the other hand, he was still pretty cold himself.

They sat in an uncomfortable silence, and neither of them was getting any warmer. Earlier that day, Kanan made the comment about Chion's winter cycle and how they unfortunately may have landed on the wrong hemisphere. Ezra agreed as the biting wind brought what seemed to be flecks of snow.

Ezra hugged himself tighter, hiding his head under the coat. "Hey, kid?" A muffled Kanan-like voice spoke, and Ezra poked out a miserable eye. Since a few moments ago, Kanan adopted a thoughtful, if a little unsure grin on his face. He asked, "Want me to teach you a trick me and my master did during the Clone Wars?"

Ezra looked up in curiosity. "A Jedi trick?" Kanan mysteriously nodded. "Sit next to me."

Ezra scrambled to his feet, careful not to trip on the long coat, and moved next to the man. He sat on the cold dirt and looked up expectantly. "What next?"

The Jedi reached around him, to Ezra's surprise, pulling him into a loose embrace. The padawan just sat there dumbfounded a moment, and then said, "That's not a Jedi trick," he complained.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Kanan winked, and then ruffled Ezra's hair. "This will keep us both warm."

And he was right. His warmth seeped through Ezra's thin clothing, and the boy felt his trembling subside a bit.

For a while, neither of them said anything. Kanan's heartbeat was a reassuring rhythm in the stillness, making Ezra's eyelids droopy.

"Kanan? You awake?" Ezra spoke, his voice a tired whisper. Kanan hummed in response. "I just wanted to thank you."

Kanan snorted. "For what, getting you stranded here with me?"

Ezra shook his head, snuggling closer, the warmth tugging him into the arms of sleep. "I'm just glad you're here, master."

Kanan looked down at the sleep-laden teenager, and a fond smile tugged at his lips as he looked up at the starry sky. "I'm glad you're here too, kid," he sighed, suddenly feeling wistful.

"Do you think the others made it?" Ezra muttered.

His gaze still fixed on the sky, Kanan's eyes twinkled as a familiar dark silhouette made the stars wink out. "I have a feeling they did."
