Work Text:
Butch looked down at his female counterpart. She was lying next to him in the field they had decided to stop and chill at. Her emerald eyes were sparkling brightly, adding to her peaceful expression. Her hair draped around her head nicely. Her skin was lightly tanned too. Needless to say, she was beautiful. Enough so, that Butch was unable to look anywhere but at her. After a few minutes of his continuous staring though, Buttercup finally noticed.
“What the hell are you staring for Butch?” she asked brashly, uncomfortable from his gaze. He contemplated something for a few seconds before answering.
“Do you even understand how beautiful you are Buttercup?” Her eyes grew wide in her shock and she sputtered for a minute, blushing and unsure how to respond.
“What are you going on about?!” He sent her an amused stare, but held back his chuckle.
“It’s just that you’re gorgeous, and you don’t seem to even be aware of the impact you have on those around you.” He stated casually. She sent him a suspicious stare.
“Are you okay? Did you hit your head? Or are you and your brothers trying to pull a prank on me? Cuz it’s not gonna work.” Butch rolled his eyes.
“No, I’m fine, and I’m being serious here BC, cuz you just don’t seem to get it.” This time she rolled her eyes at him.
“Get what? That I’m “so gorgeous and everybody loves me”? Yeah right. I’m the least favorite out of my sisters and I.” She says with a bitter bite. Butch looks at her, sympathetic.
“Butts, you may be the spicy one, but everybody likes a good kick in their boring lives. You add variety and a good dose of reality to anyone’s day. And that’s just a piece of what makes you awesome. Hell, plus you’re hot and just about everyone I know has had a thing for you at one point in time.” He replies. She clicks her tongue.
“Yeah yeah, but I’m too much for anyone to truly be able to handle. And even if everyone had a thing for me at one point in time, it’s just that, a phase. No one wants a long term relationship with me, not that I care.” She turned her body and crossed her arms, frustrated, but Butch still saw the hurt cross her face.
“I want you long term.” He states seriously, but she shakes her head in exasperation.
“You don’t really have a choice. We’re counterparts after all. Besides, I was talking romantically, doofus.” She replies, a little put out. Butch frowns deeply and leans over her, catching her gaze and full attention.
“I meant romantically Buttercup.” She flushes immediately and sits up. He backs off, giving her space.
“Stop it Butch,” BC says and gets up. Butch follows her into standing. He then moves in front of her and grabs her gaze again.
“Stop what Buttercup? I’m being totally serious.” He states. She scoffs in reply, moving to go around him. He doesn’t let her.
“Butch, stop,” She says again and turns around, deciding to leave that way. Butch stops her by grasping her left wrist, his grip firm, but not painful.
“I love you,” He says, pulling her around to face him. Her eyes are wide and shocked.
“I love you,” He states again, not hesitating to pull her into his arms when tears begin falling down her cheeks, “I love you, and will continue to love you. Even if no one else does, even if you can’t even love yourself, I’ll love you.” Buttercup grips his shirt tight.
“It’s alright, I’m right here,” Butch continues softly, “I’m right here and I’m staying. I promise.” He wraps BC in the best hug he was capable of.
“So you can trust me alright? You can let it go, you can let it out,” He threads a hand through her hair and cradles her head to his chest, “I’ll be right here to pick up all the pieces, and to help you put yourself back together again.” Buttercup finally breaks. Sobs tear out of her form, shaking her to her very core. She cries and cries and cries some more, and Butch remains there, holding her the entire time, and long after she was finished. When she was dry, he placed a single, sweet kiss upon her forehead and flew her home. He parted from her with comforting words that he would see her again tomorrow, and another kiss to her head. It was then that BC knew she would be okay.
