hush, little baby

Summary:

To the tune of “hush, little baby”

Notes:

Credit to my big sis whump_angst_fluff_repeat: when I started writing a year and a half ago she patiently read my cringey first fics because I was excited to show them to someone; she even pointed out a bunch of parts she liked. Huge thank-you’s and big hugs for overlooking all the awkwardness, and for just being excited to read things and share fanfic.
But THEN, I wrote this, while driving, as stated in the lengthy tags. And a few months later I showed it to her. Which felt even weirder than other stuff I wrote cause like, it’s a song. But she LOVED it. And appreciated all the little things I slipped in and the fluff and the cozy and everything and said that she loves my stories but this kind of thing just seemed more natural to me and smooth and cute! So that encouraged me to keep writing poems here and there, which I really enjoy. You’re the best, Maddy <33.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Hush little baby don’t say a word,

Papa’s gonna buy you a mockingbird.

And if that mockingbird don’t sing,

Papa’s gonna buy you an ice cream machine.

And if it breaks and needs new parts,

Papa’s gonna give you three thousand hearts.

And if three thousand hearts should break,

Then we’ll go take a swim in the lake.

If that lake should make you cold,

Papa’s gonna find you your teddy to hold.

And when you’re warm and your shivers have stopped,

We’ll get cold again with a frozen juice pop.

And when that juice pop is eaten up,

We’ll drink hot chocolate from your tiger cup.

When that cup is empty too,

Papa’s gonna read you a story or two.

And when you’re tired and your eyes start to close,

Papa’s gonna give you a kiss on the nose.

And as your mind starts closing too,

You’ll hear Daddy whisper

“I  love  you.”

Notes:

This can be imagined in (at least) two ways. There’s the angstier version (which I think was my original thought) where Tony sang this song to Morgan when she was a baby, adding in verses of his own as she grew and they found inside jokes or particular memories or favorite things or whatever. (Like if Morgan is constantly losing her favorite Teddy bear or something). After Endgame, Peter gets to know Morgan and Pepper, and sometimes tucks Morgan in, and so she teaches him this song cause Daddy used to sing it and she needs it. So Peter carries it on. And he sees little pieces in it—Morgan’s “tiger” cup, that time they took hours to figure out how they broke the ice cream maker—and after Morgan’s asleep he just sits there and cries.
Then there’s the version where Tony sings Morgan to sleep with that song, or when she’s sad, or whatever. Then we diverge from Canon, and after Endgame at some point Peter comes over, and he’s sick, or just having a really hard day, and he’s trying not to take attention but it shows through. So when Morgan comes and asks Tony to tuck her in, Tony tells her that Pepper’s gonna tuck her in tonight cause Peter needs him, but first he WILL sing their song. Then he carries her over to the couch where Peter’s huddled, plops down right next to him, pulls both of them halfway onto his lap, instructs Morgan to pull a blanket over them, and sings his lullaby. And after Morgan goes to bed Tony holds Peter for a long time, humming softly, talks, gets him snacks, tucks him in, watches a movie, whatever. And is cute. Or Peter gets hurt and is in medbay in a lot of pain and Tony sings to him. Idk.
I explained those both to Maddy and she much preferred the latter :).
Anyways that was once again a much more detailed explanation then you needed, but maybe someday I’ll get around to writing something along these lines…
However if any of you write or know of something similar, please tell me!! I would much appreciate the fluff, angst, whump, whatever it is.😁
And if you stuck with my rambling for this long, you deserve a prize. Love you all!! <33
