“Did it hurt?”
“What, when I fell from heaven?”
“What? No man, your piercings.” Miles laughs, straightening up from leaning back against the brick of the building they were currently sitting on.
“Depends which ones you’re referrin’ to,” Hobie grins, waving his hand generally at his face. “Got lots of options to choose from.”
Miles takes a second to study his friend's face again as if he hadn’t been doing that exact thing for the past half hour that they had been hanging out together. Hobie had more piercings than anyone Miles had ever met before, and he would be lying if he said they didn’t intrigue him. He’d never really thought about getting his ears pierced before, but seeing how the silver studs and rings decorated the punk's face and emphasized his features made the idea seem appealing.
Zoning back in, Miles realized he had been silently staring at Hobie’s face for too long.
He cleared his throat, seeing Hobie’s amused expression “Oh uh, your earrings.” he looked away, feeling his face heat up for making it awkward.
Hobie thankfully didn’t mention his staring. “Well, different types of pain mate. The lobes were the easiest, clean cut. More of a pressure than anything in my opinion, only hurts for a bit.” He waves his hands around while talking, which Miles definitely doesn’t find endearing. “The cartilage piercings are more painful for the actual piercing and healing. Sharper pain that lasts most of the day, get infected easier too so you gotta take proper care of em, more so than normal anyways.” He shifts closer to Miles, smirking. “Why, you thinking of getting some?”
Miles shifts, nervous under the other boys' gaze. For some reason, he didn’t want him to know his newfound interest was because of him. “I mean yeah, I’ve been thinking about it for a while I guess…” he trailed off, glancing back at Hobie.
“Want to get 'em done right now?” he cocked his head, grin broadening.
“Wait what?” His eyes widened.
“I’ve got a spare kit at my place from the last time I did my own,” Hobie jumped up and offered his hand to Miles “C’mon mate, let's do it.”
Miles blinked. He grabbed Hobie’s hand and pulled himself up. “Wait. Wait wait wait, seriously?”
Hobie just raised an eyebrow, pulling his hand back to set the destination on his watch, making his answer clear.
Excitement built in Miles’ chest, spreading across his face in a wide smile. This is why he loved hanging out with the other boy, he was always so impulsive and confident, making every time they saw each other interesting.
He had grown up primarily seeing earrings on women, but in recent years he had seen more and more guys at his school getting them too. Of course, he probably wouldn’t wear anything as big as his mom's hoop earrings...
His smile falters, remembering his parents and thinking of their reaction when he came home after this. They wouldn't necessarily be mad at him for piercing his ears, just for making impulse decisions and not getting them done "safely." (Hobie is plenty safe, Miles reasons, for the most part.)
“You comin’?” Hobie asked, his voice interrupting Miles’ thoughts. He had his hands in his pockets and was waiting next to the portal.
Miles brushed his anxiety away for now “Yeah yeah, of course man!”
He was gonna be in so much trouble.
