Work Text:
“Ayo, Noah! You gotta listen to this!”
Noah looks up from the wires he’s soldering together at the sound of Mirage’s voice. The rebuilt mech has spent most of today fiddling with his new radio- going up and down on the dials looking for what Noah can only assume is a good tune. It’s provided nice background noise for his work, and he’s even found himself humming along to the bits and pieces he catches when he’s not focused on a project. Now, though, Mirage wants his attention for a specific song.
“What’cha got, ‘Raj?” Noah asks, getting up and letting himself stretch. He hears the telltale sounds of Mirage’s transformation, and smiles when he turns to see the Cybertronian staring at him in his root form.
All night long, we’re face-to-face
Just us in this place
The lyrics fizzle in from Mirage’s speakers, and Noah blinks. A small smile appears on his face; he can’t help but chuckle at the irony.
“It’s this new song by Antonio Ramirez!” Mirage chirps, optics shining bright as he gazes down at Noah. “I’ve heard it a couple times before, ‘n I can tell it’s gunna be a banger!” He takes a step back to dance along to the song, hips swaying and helm nodding to the beat. Noah finds himself listening along and even starting to join in. He’s also heard the song a couple of times on the radio, so he picks up the lyrics easily enough. Before he knows it, they’re leaving his lips.
“Tell me really what you’re thinkin’
‘Cause I can’t think of nobody else
Nobody else
I don’t wanna overthink it
But I can’t think of nobody else
Nobody else~”
“Eyyy, get it, Noah!” Noah laughs, awkward and blissful all mixed up into one as Mirage cheers him on. The lyrics tumble around in his brain while he continues to dance; while he continues to watch Mirage dance.
You don’t need my compliments
Got that confidence that I like like that
‘Cause you fly like that
Mirage’s confidence feels infectious sometimes- the way he can make Noah believe anything’s possible. He’d shown up in Noah’s life like a whirlwind of energy and enthusiasm, one Noah has a hard time picturing himself without now. After all they’ve done together, after everything they’ve been through…
Make a play, I wanna be faithful (Oh-oh)
You don’t wanna change where my heart is at (My heart is at)
When I’m with you, I wanna lay low
Do a lot of nothin’ and all of that (All of that)
“Hey, ‘Raj?” The bot stops dancing, turning his attention back to Noah. The cat-like smile on his face hasn’t left, and his helm still does a cute little bop to the beat of the song.
“Yeah, man?” Noah takes a breath, his own fingers tapping against the railing of his raised platform. His heart beats faster in his chest; butterflies begin fluttering in his stomach.
If you feel the same, baby, say so (Say so)
“How come you like this song so much?”
Say so, mm-mm-mm (Oh)
Mirage blinks once; then twice. His optics whirr as he stops nodding his head, seeming to consider Noah’s question. Noah waits, feeling tense for a reason he can’t explain.
“I dunno, man.” The bot replies after a couple of beats, “There’s jus’ somethin’ about it, yanno? The rhythm, the flow-”
“The lyrics?” Noah finds himself interrupting. He doesn’t even realize the words have left his mouth at first, but then Mirage raises an optic ridge at him. He can feel the heat on his cheeks, why is he blushing?
Oh, you got me hangin’ on
Hangin’ on, on for you
Oh, you got me hangin’ on
Hangin’ on, on for you, oh
He knows Mirage can see right through him. Hell, they’ve merged together as one before; Mirage knows him in a deeper way than anyone else ever will. “You’ve been inside me!” rings in his mind as the song’s chorus croons out one last time,
Keep me waitin’ patient, hangin’ on (Patient so long)
Hangin’ on for you (Hangin’ on for you)
“I have been,” Mirage’s voice interrupts Noah’s thoughts, and when he blinks the other is much closer than he’d been a moment ago. Close enough to touch; close enough that if Noah leaned forward just a bit he could- wait.
“Huh?”
“Waitin’ patient, Noah.” Mirage murmurs, his gaze trained on Noah. It’s soft and lidded and so, so gentle. Noah wants to melt under that gaze, doesn’t want it to ever leave him. He’d give anything for Mirage to look at him this way for the rest of his life. “So tell me, really, what you’re thinking. ‘Cus-”
“I can’t think of nobody else.” Noah finishes, breathless and heady, and that’s all Mirage needs to hear before he’s pressing his lips to Noah’s. The kiss is eager and sloppy; it takes a moment for them to settle because of the difference in their size. Noah’s vaguely aware of the song ending, of another one starting, but it all fades to background noise in his mind. All he can feel is the smooth plating of Mirage’s cheek as he comes up to caress it; all he can hear is the sweet croon the bot lets out when he does. As they part, a laugh leaves him, and he presses his forehelm to Mirage’s forehead.
“Sorry for making ya wait so long, man.” He says, voice soft. Mirage snorts, bringing a servo up to rest against Noah’s back. ‘Always so careful, so gentle.’
“Don’t worry about it, babe.” The pet name makes Noah’s heart flutter again. “The wait was worth it.” Noah snorts.
“Well then, I guess we owe Antonio Ramirez a thank you.”
