Work Text:
It hadn’t even been a day since Hinata managed to get together with Tsukasa, before it seemed like everyone she knew and loved found out.
Which, Tsukasa had said wouldn’t be a surprise once her roommates caught her, but damn they spread fast.
Hinata could barely let herself think about how nice it had been spending time in her room with Tsukasa, cuddling and kissing her, and waking up to the other girl already making her food.
Because she was instead sitting in the cafe, working the early shift she normally had (with Tsukasa working at the counter on some boring assignment, Hinata forgot what), before she looked up when the bell at the door rang.
Oh shit.
Hinata was suddenly really sad she didn’t have someone else on the shift, as Rei walked up to the counter with Kaoru, before reaching over and grabbing her cheek.
“Ow ow-! Sakuma-senpai-!” Hinata pouted, as Rei’s red eyes pierced into her soul, making her shut up.
Poor Tsukasa, she had headphones on and hadn’t noticed until Kaoru tapped her shoulder, looking up and instantly going pale.
“Hinata-chan, do you want to explain what happened last night?” Rei wore an innocent smile, but his hold on Hinata’s cheek told her this was not a path to a good ending.
Tsukasa, who only had the staredown between Kaoru to deal with and not an attack on her face, hesitantly spoke up to defend them both.
“W-what exactly do you know already?”
Yeah, Tsukasa was also nervous, so Hinata at least wasn’t alone.
Hinata really wished Kaoru would speak up and take the pacifist approach, but it seemed like those prayers fell on deaf ears as Rei tugged her cheek harder.
“Middle of the night, I get a message from Leo telling me that my child and her child were caught in the middle of the act?” Rei’s eyes turned dangerous, as both Tsukasa and Hinata’s faces went bright red.
“What?!” Tsukasa barely got out, as Hinata finally managed to get out of the hold on her, taking a moment to steady her breathing.
“S-sakuma-senpai excuse me?!”
“Do you have an explanation for that?”
“Yes actually,” Hinata muttered, taking a deep breath. “You’re being told the wrong thing? We- we literally had just gotten together?!”
Rei did pause hearing that, anger seeming to calm a little, as Kaoru let out a nervous laugh.
“I had tried to convince him that it was probably being exaggerated a little, but you know how protective he can get over you…” Kaoru pat Tsukasa on the shoulder, as she still was trying to calm herself, before Kaoru looked up with a small teasing smile to Hinata. “Although~ I don’t think that making out with her counts as your crush liking someone else Hinata-chan…~”
Hinata’s face went back to a bright red, as Tsukasa chose to calm down at the wrong time, looking up at her.
“You told them I liked someone else?!” Hinata let out a muffled groan as Tsukasa asked that, covering her face.
“I told you I thought you had a crush on someone else, and I was kinda really sad over that-!”
Rei muffled a small chuckle, as he then reached over to ruffle Hinata’s hair, making her shut up and look back at him.
“Well, being able to clear that up, I can now easily just say that I’m happy for you two.” Rei’s smile was caring, as Hinata smiled back softly.
“Which is good, because watching you two pine was getting tiring~” Kaoru added, as Hinata and Tsukasa both pouted at him. Rei did hum in agreement though.
Getting the two of them their regular drinks, Hinata found herself humming happily as they both took a moment to chat with her girlfriend.
God… her girlfriend. Tsukasa was her girlfriend…
It might’ve made her a little giddy, as she turned to hand them their drinks. Kaoru smiled softly and paid, as Rei turned to whisper something to Tsukasa.
Hinata wanted to eavesdrop, but Kaoru did speak up, catching her attention.
“You might wanna tell your brother soon, since he’d be even worse than Rei if he heard what we did.”
Hinata paused, thinking about it for a moment before shivering, and nodding.
“Good idea, thank you Hakaze-senpai…” Kaoru simply hummed, patting her head before turning to grab Rei’s shoulder, before they both left.
Hinata did pause when she saw the horrified expression on her girlfriend's face, moving to gently brush her hair aside and kiss her forehead, snapping Tsukasa out of it.
“Kasa?~ What’s got you looking like you’ve seen a ghost? Hell, we have seen one, so that doesn’t really work…” Hinata lightly teased the other, seeing her smile softly in return.
“Sakuma-senpai can be terrifying…” Tsukasa simply muttered, leaning over the counter to cup Hinata’s face, kissing her nose. “Made me promise to never hurt you, which I’d rather die than hurt you, before threatening that if I did he’d make sure I never saw a peaceful day again…”
Hinata giggled softly, smiling at Tsukasa with such a loving expression.
“I trust that you won’t~ so don’t let me down my knight!~” Hinata then booped Tsukasa, before stepping back and going behind the counter, humming a soft tune.
Tsukasa seemed a little flustered, but wore a small smile as she went back to work, which made Hinata’s heart melt.
God she was so cute… how had Hinata gotten this lucky??
Yeah, once this shift was over she was so excited to spend time with Tsukasa.
They both had a free period, so spending it together was most definitely going to happen.
Honestly, Hinata couldn’t wait.
Even if she forgot the important part of informing her brother, it’d be fine.
-----
As soon as the shift was over, Hinata wasn’t expecting to be literally swept off her feet by her girlfriend, but she wasn’t about to complain.
Holding onto Tsukasa tightly as she was suddenly lifted by her waist and spun, Hinata couldn’t help but giggle, before still clutching to the others shirt when she was set down.
“Kasa-! Give me a warning next time!~” Hinata playfully kicked Tsukasa’s leg, as she just smiled softly down at Hinata in response.
“Sorry~ I was just happy to see you!”
Oh my god that’s not fair Hinata thought to herself, feeling a blush dust her cheeks.
Instead of focusing on how incredible Tsukasa was (which was hard, since that’s what a majority of her thoughts were), she just took Tsukasa’s hand and started walking, lightly pulling the other behind her.
“Where are we going?” Tsukasa asked, as Hinata shrugged. She felt Tsukasa speed up a little to walk side by side with Hinata, still keeping their hands together.
They’d walked like this before, so it wasn’t a new thing for either of them, but it still made Hinata’s poor heart speed up a little.
No one on campus found it surprising either, as once again they’d done it before, just maybe not with this happy expression.
After a bit of wandering and chatting, the two of them found themselves at the fountain, sitting on the edge.
Hinata was quick to cuddle into Tsukasa’s side, as she just laughed softly and wrapped an arm around her waist.
Looking up, Hinata couldn’t help but smile at Tsukasa, leaning up to press a kiss to her cheek.
“How did I manage to get someone as wonderful as you?” Hinata asked, making Tsukasa look down at her confused.
“By being yourself, Hinata.” Came the simple reply, making Hinata give a confused look of her own.
“...Elaborate?”
“Hinata, you’re a wonderful person. You can make friends with almost anyone, and take the time to remember almost every person and their orders and likes. You’re exceptionally clever and smart when you want to be, and always seem to have the words to manage almost any situation. You never fail to make me smile, and you make me so happy to even just be in the same room with you and see you smiling.” Tsukasa used her free hand to cup Hinata’s face while she spoke, making her poor girlfriend go bright red.
“Kasa…”
“Everything about you is something I love, Hinata. I mean it.”
Oh, Hinata wasn’t ready for this randomly.
Her normal reaction to shove whoever it was being kind away to maintain the typical mask was overridden by just how much she loved Tsukasa.
She wasn’t ready to fully abandon her masks, but letting them drop a little around Tsukasa was fine, as Hinata simply snuggled further into Tsukasa, shutting her eyes.
“Mmm… stop being so perfect Kasa…”
“If it manages to make you smile like that, I don’t think I will…” Oh, Hinata hadn’t even realized just how much she was smiling. But… She guessed it was ok, since she had never found it this easy to smile.
Instead of humoring her girlfriend with a response, she just rested her head on Tsukasa’s shoulder, shutting her eyes with a soft hum.
Tsukasa kissed her forehead, moving to play with Hinata’s hair with one hand, and pulling out a book with another.
It was peaceful, being able to sit in silence, yet still feel so deeply loved. Hinata didn’t ever want to lose this.
Hinata’s pretty sure she could’ve fallen asleep like this (they had stayed up a little late since they were still riding down the high of getting together finally), but just before that pleasant feeling of unconsciousness could take over, she heard Tsukasa mutter “oh shit.”
Never a good sign when Tsukasa swore.
Hinata chose to keep the act of being asleep instead of opening her eyes, as she heard two familiar voices approaching, and Tsukasa wrapping her arm around Hinata a little tighter.
“Tsukasa-chan!~” The familiar voice of a certain Arashi Narukami rang out, as Tsukasa sighed.
“Narukami-senpai, please keep your voice down…” Tsukasa responded, voice still quiet to try and be cautious of Hinata. She didn’t know that Hinata was awake, but Hinata could always apologize later.
“Right right, we wouldn’t want your new girlfriend waking up from her little nap!~” Arashi hummed, as Hinata could feel Tsukasa tighten her hold again, almost feeling how she blushed. Hinata was really glad she could force herself to not react and instead keep fake sleeping. Some skills are useful.
“...Did Leo-san tell you-”
“Oh honey, Leo-san sent all of Knights minus you the photo she took…”
Tsukasa let out a groan, as Hinata then finally picked up who the other voice was.
Oh shit.
“That would explain why Anaja was a mix of sad and happy earlier, pushing me for information…” The voice of a certain Ritsu Sakuma chimed in, as Hinata tried to do her best to stay still and not react. “I’m glad you’re happy, but I don’t need to see you every night just because you’re dating my roommate…~”
Tsukasa gave a small hum in approval, sighing then as she put something together.
“You already got a picture of her sleeping on me, haven’t you.”
“Tsukipi has already started squealing over it in the groupchat.” Ritsu simply responded, as Tsukasa let out a longer sigh.
Deciding now was as good a time as any, Hinata shifted a little and “woke up”, rubbing her eyes and looking up at the two seniors.
“Ah~ Good morning sleepy head!~” Arashi softly hummed, gently rustling Hinata’s hair, making her giggle.
“Good morning Narukami-senpai, what were you talking about?” Hinata innocently tilted her head to the side, as Ritsu decided to answer.
“About how if you ever hurt Su-chan we’ll rip you to shreds, no roommate pass is available~” Ritsu smirked a little, as Hinata rolled her eyes at him.
“You’d happily kill me so you could have the room alone with Isara-senpai…” Hinata muttered, as Ritsu shrugged.
“Well~ Either way, we’ll be out of your hair now!” Arashi smiled, blowing the two of them a kiss as she pulled Ritsu with her, as they both walked off.
Tsukasa let out a sigh of relief once they were gone, gently fixing Hinata’s hair and kissing her head.
“Sorry about that… you can go back to sleep Hinata…” Hinata just giggled, as she leaned up to kiss Tsukasa’s cheek.
“Alright Kasa…”
That wasn’t the original plan, but Tsukasa was comfortable…
Maybe a small nap would be ok, even if it means she missed the fact Tsukasa took a selfie of Hinata sleeping on her shoulder, favoriting it.
Honestly, Hinata didn’t care, as Tsukasa was warm and loving and she was tired.
She’d never slept better for it being a midday nap.

Hinata would be the first to admit that the fact her girlfriend knew how to formally dance was a power she abused, and Hinata definitely did not mind it.
Learning how to dance was a bit of a pain and definitely embarrassing when she only knew gymnastics and acrobatics, but having learned was definitely for the best.
Because now it meant Hinata would occasionally be pulled into a dance randomly, the two of them taking it at a much faster pace to dance along the campus.
Hinata always just felt giddy when it happened, even if it had led to her friends occasionally taking video of them and sending it to her.
It had been a few weeks since Tsukasa and Hinata had gotten together, but all of those warnings about the honeymoon phase ending soon seemed to be proven wrong with how happy they were.
Hinata might’ve secretly hoped it’d never end, but no one could prove that.
Hinata had been dancing along with Tsukasa and giggling as they got to the coffee shop, as Tsukasa then stepped back and bowed, kissing her hand.
“We’ve arrived, my lady~” A small flirt that earned a small smile from Hinata.
“Thank you, my dear knight~” Hinata simply flirted back, kissing Tsukasa on the cheek before stepping inside. “Good luck in your class, see you at lunch?”
“Of course!” Hinata blew Tsukasa a kiss, as the other girl smiled softly before walking off.
Hinata let out a small happy sigh, turning around and vaulting over the counter, before turning to grab her uniform.
An attempt cut short, as Yuuta grabbed her shoulders.
Oh, I never got around to telling him that-
“Aniki.” Yuuta’s voice was low, as Hinata looked at him with a nervous smile.
“Yuuta?~”
“When were you going to tell me you two were together.” Her face went a little red, a mix of being flustered and embarrassed, as Yuuta’s eyes narrowed. “Good god you better be together because if that’s platonic I’m killing you both-”
“No no- we’re… we’re together…” Hinata smiled softly, as Yuuta loosened his grip with a relieved sigh. “It’s… been a few weeks now.”
“A few weeks?!” Yuuta shot her a glare, as he shoved her uniform into her hands to have her get changed. “I wasn’t told why?!”
“Long story, you deal with the customers for a moment!” Hinata waved, as she ran to the backroom to change.
The minute she came out, her brother was back on her case as they finished making some orders.
“So?”
“So what?”
“Why wasn’t I told?”
“The night we got together her roommate caught us kissing and got a photo, so a lot of people found out via that,” Hinata sighed, before smiling brightly at a customer as she handed them their drink. “Since we’ve been fairly happy and public with it, it slipped my mind that I hadn’t told you!”
“Cruel, but I guess I can understand,” Yuuta lightly elbowed her in response, earning a small laugh and sound of protest.
“Mhm, now we just need to find my poor little brother a lover of his own!~” Hinata replied, seeing Yuuta’s face flush up.
“Aniki-”
“Hmm, I wonder if Shinobu would-”
“ANIKI.” Yuuta kicked at her leg, making her laugh and jump over it, before sticking her tongue out at her brother.
It was simple moments like this that reminded her of how lucky she was to have Yuuta as a brother, even if they fought.
“Oh, by the way, thank you for all the help Yuuta!” Hinata smiled softly, as Yuuta paused, smiling softly in return.
“Of course, my big sister can be a little stupid at times, but you still deserve to be with the one you love,” Yuuta hummed softly, turning to grab a cup before looking back at her. “And I couldn’t stand to keep watching you two hopelessly pine after the other, unaware that the other felt the same.”
Hinata just blew a raspberry at him, making Yuuta laugh and stick his tongue out in return, before Hinata turned back to take orders with a happy smile.
She didn’t miss the small muttered thing Yuuta said though, as they both split to be the most deadly duo behind the counter.
“Congratulations Aniki, I'm happy for you.”
It wasn’t bitter, Hinata could tell. Just her brother refusing to be nice randomly.
Which she didn’t mind one bit, as she knew he cared just as much.
With a small pep in her step, she spun back around to make the order as Yuuta finished the customer's transaction.
God, she was so lucky to have so many wonderful people in her life.

Tsukasa and Hinata had gotten incredibly comfortable with each other after about two months of dating.
Which, once again, wasn’t the most surprising thing with how close they had already been to each other before confessing, but still left their friends surprised.
For example, when Tsukasa was in the middle of a conversation with Arashi and Izumi, the two weren’t expecting for Hinata to so easily walk up and wrap her arms around Tsukasa, just nuzzling into her neck from behind.
Tsukasa easily shifted her weight so it was easier for Hinata to rest against her, and reached up to play with the others hair, while continuing her sentence with no hesitation.
It was Izumi who first spoke up about it, looking at Tsukasa confused.
“...Is this just common for you?” Hinata still felt like every word Izumi said could in fact kill, but Tsukasa seemed to be able to tell the difference between the normal annoyance Izumi had, and when she was actually pissed off.
Tsukasa hummed softly, still playing with Hinata’s hair, as she shifted to nuzzle into Tsukasa’s neck a little more.
“More or less, yes.”
“Do I want to know why?”
“Do I want to know what you and Leo-san talk about in Italian when I’m in the dorm?”
Izumi let out a little flustered huff, dropping that subject right there to try and save a little face.
Arashi’s laughter told Hinata that no, in fact, Izumi had failed there, before she spoke up.
“Is Hinata-chan going to speak to us while like that though?~” she lightly teased, as Tsukasa shook her head.
“Unlikely, I’m guessing she had a stressful shift so let’s just give her a moment to recharge.” Tsukasa was correct, as Hinata was at the point where murder felt ok, and appreciated that she had picked up on these signs.
“Ah?~ That’s so cute!! You can tell from this simple of an action?” Tsukasa nodded again, turning to press a kiss to Hinata’s head and earning a soft hum from the other girl.
“I’ve learned over time, it’s easier to memorize these little things to help her out than to leave her alone to suffer. I’m happy to learn the nonverbal cues since she’s told me she doesn’t like verbalizing it either.”
Hinata wrapped her arms around Tsukasa a little tighter, pressing a soft kiss to her neck to assure her it was ok to have told them this, before Arashi let out a little squeal.
“That’s so romantic!! When will I have someone do that for me…” She whined, making Tsukasa laugh softly and Izumi let out a scoff.
“If you’d stop just pining for that one guy with blue hair you constantly fawn over and just confess, maybe you would.” Izumi muttered, earning an upset gasp from Arashi.
“You’re so cruel to me! Not everyone has their literal soulmate come running into them and start complimenting your beauty, you know!” Hinata could hear the pout in her voice, as Izumi let out an exasperated sigh.
“So~ annoying, don’t act like me and Leo-kun are the perfect love story.”
“You’re not, but you’re at least a love story!! That’s more than I have going for me…”
Tsukasa let out a small sigh, feeling Hinata shift to rest her chin on the other’s shoulder instead.
A small signal that she was doing better, and was willing to at least be part of the conversation.
Izumi was about to snap back with something, before noticing that Hinata had looked up. Studying her for only a few seconds, Izumi spoke up.
“You’re starting to get bags under your eyes, Hinata-chan.”
The other two paused, quickly looking over at Hinata, as she just kinda blinked a little surprised.
“How could you tell so quickly..?” Hinata asked, as Tsukasa gently cupped her face and ran a thumb under her eyes, making sure there wasn’t any makeup being used to hide them (there wasn’t, but Hinata understood why Tsukasa wanted to check).
“I worked as a model, hell, I still do ,” Izumi replied, as Hinata noted the barely noticeable hint of worry in her voice. “I’ve learned how to moderate schedules to minimize those. Are you sleeping enough?”
“I mean, I’ve been staying up a little later these past few nights for homework, but I didn’t think it was that bad.”
“Try to keep 6 hours as an absolute minimum, but aim for 7-9 hours of sleep, ok?” Izumi’s voice was still cold, but Hinata nodded, smiling softly.
“Understood, thank you Sena-senpai.”
“Of course.” Was all she said, before checking her phone and sighing. “And just like that, I need to attend to my own ginger.”
Tsukasa and Arashi both gave a nod of understanding, as Izumi walked off. Hinata tilted her head to the side, as Tsukasa sighed.
“Leo-san probably is causing problems again…” Hinata let out a small “ah”, as Arashi hummed.
“Well~ I’m glad Hinata-chan is feeling better!” Arashi smiled brightly, as Hinata smiled back just as bright.
“Mhm! I just needed a few moments, sorry if I interrupted anything important!~” Arashi waved her hand dismissively.
“Oh no, not at all! If you had, you know Izumi-chan would’ve been more aggressive in her response!”
“I’m going to be honest, I cannot read Sena-senpai as good as the rest of you…” Hinata muttered, as Tsukasa laughed softly.
“It took me a while, but Narukami-senpai knew her since childhood, so she’s the best at reading them.” Arashi nodded, as Tsukasa peppered a few soft kisses to the side of Hinata’s face after explaining, making her giggle.
“Tsukasa-chan…~ now you’re making me feel single!!!” Arashi whined, as Tsukasa shrugged.
“Take it as motivation to confess to your crush, don’t follow my example…”
“Of what, pining relentlessly and not being able to confess because it all wasn’t going to be good enough for Hinata-chan?~” Tsukasa went bright red, glaring at Arashi who wore an innocent smile, as Hinata moved to bury her face in Tsukasa’s shoulder, trying to muffle her laughter.
“If Hinata wasn’t holding me here I think I might actually murder you. Hinata would lie for me and you know it.”
“Ah?~ Hinata-chan, please don’t let go for my sake!!” Arashi teasingly begged, knowing that Hinata would listen to her.
“Hm… maybe, can you tell me more about how Kasa was while she was still crushing on me as well?~”
“Hina- please we don’t have to-” Tsukasa turned to look at her, about to plead her case, before Hinata simply leaned forward to steal a quick kiss, moving back with a small smile. Tsukasa’s poor brain needed a moment to catch up, face bright red as Hinata looked back at Arashi.
She had definitely gotten a photo, but Hinata didn’t mind, instead mouthing to her send me that and getting a small nod in response.
“Well~ I’ll leave you two lovebirds alone before I feel more painfully single than before…~” Arashi giggled, waving at the two of them. Hinata waved back, as Tsukasa barely waved before looking back at Hinata.
“Hina…”
“Yes Kasa?”
“Please give me a warning…”
“Mmm… no!~” Hinata giggled, booping Tsukasa’s nose. “I like seeing my girlfriend flustered because of my affection!~”
Tsukasa pouted a little, before turning around to face Hinata properly, surprising her a little.
“Kasa..?” No reply, as Tsukasa crouched down a little, before scooping Hinata up bridal style.
Oh, Hinata’s poor heart wasn’t ready for that, but thankfully she was quick to wrap her arms around Tsukasa's neck.
“Kasa-!”
“Yes?~” Tsukasa looked down with a soft smile, and Hinata’s protests died in her throat, as she just huffed and leaned into the other's chest.
“Jerk… I love you…” Hinata muttered, as Tsukasa kissed her forehead.
“I love you too…” Hinata couldn’t help but smile, aware of the soft blush dusting her cheeks.
Such simple words… but they always managed to make her so, so happy.
Wherever Tsukasa was taking them she didn’t really mind, just shutting her eyes and focusing on Tsukasa’s heartbeat.
This was honestly the best feeling ever…
-----
Being alone with Tsukasa’s roommate was terrifying, for about all of one minute.
Tsukasa had something to finish up, so she was in the library with a friend, but told Hinata she’d be back to her dorm in about an hour, so she could wait there.
Which was fine, as Hinata was more than happy to relax on the other's bed and potentially steal a shirt or two. She was only human, and girlfriend shirts are a need.
Leo arriving after about 15 minutes wasn’t expected though, and left Hinata wondering how terrifying this would be.
Almost all of Knights would occasionally threaten her when she was alone with them, being fiercely protective of Tsukasa. Ritsu was the exception, but that’s because they were roommates, and so long Hinata didn’t sacrifice Ritsu to his brother they were fine.
Leo looked up once she realized Hinata was there, and just waved with a bright smile.
“Hina!! Whatcha doing here?~” Leo seemed much less threatening compared to the others, as Hinata smiled softly.
“Kasa has to finish up something, and told me to wait for her in her room! She didn’t mention you’d be back though…” Hinata let out a small nervous laugh, before Leo just laughed with such a calming joy, flopping down on her own bed.
“Suo never knows when I’m gonna be back! I wander a lot, so it makes sense! No worries, I’m not gonna be a meanie and kick you out!!” Leo held her hands up, tracing small shapes on the ceiling it seemed, before looking over at Hinata again. “So! How have you been? I heard Sena has been chatting with you a little more, so I hope she’s not being too much of a bother to you!”
“Ah? No, Sena-senpai is just fine, it’s definitely a new kind of care being shown to me, but not a bother…” Hinata giggled, watching Leo roll over on her bed, legs kicking behind her.
“That’s good! If you ever need just tell me if Sena’s being a jerk, I'll get her with a spray bottle!~” Hinata started laughing harder, as Leo just wore a happy smile. Hinata admired the carefree energy that Leo held, how she could always keep people talking with happy smiles.
“I’ll let you know in that case!~” Hinata lightly drummed her fingers on the bed she was on, noticing how Leo noticed and started to drum her fingers along as well. “How have you been?”
“Me? Perfectly good! Even if the aliens aren’t here yet, I’ll get to space myself to meet them again!” Leo started messing with the tempo of the drumming of their fingers, humming softly. “Suo’s been much happier now that the two of you are together, you know?”
“Is that the case?” Hinata tilted her head to the side, as Leo nodded.
“Mhm! She’s always smiling when she gets back from spending time with you, and occasionally is talking to me about different things she’d like to do with you! Lots of cute date ideas, she’s always so happy to talk about you too!” Leo laughed softly, going back to kicking her legs.
Hinata took a moment to process that, before giggling.
“Really?~”
“Mhm!~ The amount of times she filled me in when she was still crushing on you about everything, talking about how it was really nice that you were affectionate before worrying if it was weird it made her happy to hug you and all when it was all still just platonic!”
Hinata felt a little guilty pushing for more details about her girlfriend without telling her, but Hinata also knew Rei would do the same thing Leo does if Tsukasa asked…
So leaning forward, Hinata was happy to listen to Leo talk about Tsukasa, different little things be it about Hinata, or about her likes and dislikes, how she behaved around her friends, and all the like.
It eventually shifted to Leo just talking about Knights in general, which Hinata didn’t mind. Being on good terms with her girlfriend's friend group wouldn’t be a bad thing, so knowing what they liked wouldn’t hurt.
Leo was currently in the middle of a explanation about one time Arashi was given the chance to dress the 4 of them up, and how is was torture that she forced Leo into a dress, but that Izumi looked wonderful in the suits and the dresses, and she’s pretty sure Tsukasa still had the skirt Arashi had picked out, when they heard the door open.
Tsukasa tilted her head at seeing Leo, before smiling at Hinata. Walking over, Hinata smiled softly when Tsukasa sat beside her, kissing her forehead.
“Leo-san, I wasn’t expecting you to be back.”
“Wahaha!~ Suo should know I’m nowhere and everywhere all at once!” Leo laughed, as Tsukasa rolled her eyes.
“Right… well, if I may ask, what were you two talking about while Hinata was waiting?” Tsukasa tilted her head to the side, as Hinata snuggled into her side.
“I was telling her all about Knights!” Leo simply responded, before looking up at the ceiling again. “I love all of you, even if Sena ranks a little above the rest of you, so I wanted to tell her more about you all!!”
Hinata was a little surprised to see Tsukasa smile at that so happily, as she then turned back to Hinata.
“Well, I’m glad you both had a fun time talking to each other. Would you like to head out now, Hinata?” Hinata nodded, as Tsukasa stood up, pulling Hinata along gently. “Will you be out of the dorm tonight Leo-san?”
“Hm… probably? Sena will message you probably!!”
“Of course…” Tsukasa sighed, before walking out of the dorm again, keeping her soft hold on Hinata’s hand. It made her happy, such simple affection being a constant in her life now…
As they were walking through the dorms though, Hinata couldn’t help but notice the happy smile still resting on Tsukasa’s face.
“Kasa?~ What’s got you smiling like that?~” Tsukasa looked over, seemingly surprised at what Hinata said, before humming.
“Well, I guess it’s just… hearing that Leo-san talks about me, even when I’m not there.”
“I don’t know if I completely follow?”
“Despite being roommates, since her last one moved out my first year, Leo-san never took the time to remember my name,” Tsukasa sighed, slowing their walking a little while she explained. “Even after joining their friend group, Leo-san never was good at remembering who I was. She was also dealing with a fairly messy mental state, which led to there being nights where I had to stay with the other members of our friend group, and Sena-senpai would stay in our room to help her.”
“I… see.” Hinata muttered, not really sure how to respond. Tsukasa gently squeezed her hand, sighing softly.
“I… haven’t been told for certain, but I’d heard rumors that she had gotten out of a fairly toxic relationship, and it left her hurt. I didn’t want to push that boundary, but after a bit she started to get… better.” Tsukasa wore a small smile, seeming to be reflecting on something. “I mean, it’s not like a cure. She’s still hurt from her past, but she started to get better at being her own again. It was around that time she started to recognize me more.”
Hinata nodded, squeezing Tsukasa’s hand gently in return, as Tsukasa took a moment to take a deep breath.
“She’s become a close friend now, as she trusts me more. She’s actually how I learned what I have about how to help with those mental health moments, both from the other members telling me some tactics, or even Leo-san telling me herself on better days what she needs in those moments.” Hinata paused, as then something clicked.
“That’s why you caught my spiral when we first decided to talk after the fight…”
“Mhm, I’d caught Leo-san in them too, and while it’s not the same between everyone it has helped me be able to follow others.”
“Aren’t you sweet… you’ve learned the little things for me, for your roommate…” Hinata hummed, moving to hug Tsukasa’s arm. “You’re perfect…”
“I wouldn’t say perfect…” Tsukasa sighed, kissing Hinata’s forehead in response. “I care for you, and I care for all of Knights too. I love you more than anything Hinata, so it only makes sense that I’d learn how to help you out. With Leo-san and my friends it’s…”
A pause, as Tsukasa took a moment to think over her words. Hinata didn’t mind, as she was still focusing on that pleasant, happy feeling in her heart when Tsukasa would so easily remind her how she was loved.
Hinata really didn’t understand how Tsukasa managed to always have the words she needed to hear.
Tsukasa seemed to have found the words she was looking for though, as she spoke up again.
“Knights are just… like a family to me, if that makes sense.” Hinata hummed softly in acknowledgement, as Tsukasa continued. “They’ve always been there for me. Any given moment they switch from feeling like parents, to siblings, to aunts and distant cousins, but no matter what they’re… always there.”
Hinata smiled softly, but quietly picked up on something.
She’d never explain how she knew to Tsukasa, but in how it was described made Hinata realize something.
That was exactly how she felt when it came to Undead for both her and her brother.
That group tied the two to a family, a set of people they could both rely on and fall back to.
But Hinata knew the bond they shared, the reason why the twins felt this closeness and were so happy to have that family to rely on?
Was because they hadn’t had that in so long. Hinata knew that well.
She knew how after their mom had died their dad kind of turned his back on them.
Hinata wouldn’t forget those words. Hinata wouldn’t forget how she changed everything about herself that she could just to never hear those again.
Hinata wouldn’t forget every single sacrifice she made to give Yuuta the love and support and safety he needed.
Hinata wouldn’t forget that she had to build their family herself, for Yuuta and her, with no one to rely on but the two of them.
Hinata wouldn’t forget that in the end, she shouldn’t have had to find a family like that.
Because she still knew deep down, she should’ve had a father at the very least.
Which is why she also, silently, found herself fearing for what Tsukasa’s home life was, if she were to have found a family like that as well.
But, instead of revealing the messy thoughts in her head, and instead of trying to work through her past since she really wanted to forget that, she just spoke up, voice soft and loving.
“I understand, it’s nice to have people like that.”
And Tsukasa nodded. Hinata wasn’t sure if Tsukasa had made the same connections she had by watching how she interacted with Undead, but neither of them were letting it show if that was in fact the case.
If Hinata held Tsukasa’s hand a little tighter though, starting on a ramble to get the conversation on a lighter note before it could shift darker, Tsukasa didn’t comment on it.
Hinata knew she still had secrets from Tsukasa, from everyone really.
She knew she had secrets from herself, different things hidden under layers of masks she kept.
She knew this, and she knew it wouldn’t be fair to feel upset about not knowing things about Tsukasa.
She knew over time these would come out, as that’s how it went when you trust someone with your heart.
But, deep down, there was a tiny prayer Hinata held onto.
Hinata wasn’t religious, hadn’t been raised that way and lost any potential belief once her mom died, but she held onto this one tightly.
Please… one day be able to trust me enough with these wounds hidden nearly as well as mine.
Let me try to help, even if I only know how to see them from similar scars.
-----
Cuddling with Tsukasa, with all of Knights there as well, wasn’t exactly on Hinata’s list of plans for the day, but she didn’t exactly mind.
She was tired, and drained from a fairly long day at the cafe, so they had gone back to Tsukasa’s dorm to do a little studying and cuddle.
But, Tsukasa forgot the most important thing about her friend group, which was how impulsive they were.
And somehow, after a few months of dating, Hinata wasn’t even surprised by the door being thrown open with Leo laughing, as suddenly all of Knights were now hanging out in the room.
Tsukasa had asked if she would be ok or if she wanted to leave, but Hinata found herself not minding the company.
And she had definitely made the right decision, as after about an hour she’d learned more secrets about each of them then she’d thought she’d ever learn.
Leo had just dropped a secret about Izumi that had Arashi laughing her ass off, leading to Izumi telling a secret about Arashi, and before Hinata knew it all 5 of them were revenge sharing secrets.
Hinata was just giggling softly, still cuddled into her girlfriend as she watched the mess, before pausing when Leo’s phone started ringing.
Leo looked confused from where she was on the floor, as Izumi was the one to grab the phone.
Checking the caller ID, Izumi made a disgusted face, declining the call and setting the phone back down where it was.
“Sena? Who was it?”
“No one important Leo-kun.”
Leo’s face shifted from confused to mildly annoyed.
“You don’t just make a face like that for no one, Sena, who was it.”
Hinata could hear that it wasn’t a question, as Izumi let out a huff. Looking up at Tsukasa, she seemed a little nervous, pulling Hinata closer. Arashi and Ritsu both shot each other a glance, before looking at Tsukasa and Hinata as well.
Arashi quietly mouthed to the others “do you think it’s…” as both Ritsu and Tsukasa gave a small nod.
Hinata didn’t know that much, but could tell this potentially was about to get messy, hesitating before shifting even closer to Tsukasa.
“Leo-kun, trust me. You don’t want to know who it was.”
“You know I don’t like being told what to do or what I want.”
“I do, which means when I say you should know it’s for a reason.”
Leo let out a huff, crossing her arms as she glared at Izumi. Hinata hadn’t seen her wear that angry expression ever. Despite still being a bit afraid of Izumi, she found herself honestly more afraid of Leo in that moment, even if Izumi looked just as annoyed.
“Sena, I’m not stupid, I can handle my own issues. Who was calling?”
Hinata was a little confused, looking up to Tsukasa. Tsukasa opened up her phone's note app, making sure the sound was off so Hinata could type her question.
Shouldn’t Tsukinaga-senpai be able to tell at this point if it was him?
Tsukasa read the question, before entering twice and typing her reply.
It’s possible it wasn’t him, Leo-san had some ex friends who used her as well.
Hinata frowned softly, as Arashi and Ritsu had both barely moved.
“Someone I thought I had blocked when I helped you delete all their contact info, is that enough?” Izumi’s voice was cold, as Leo let out a scoff, rolling her eyes.
“Not really? You helped me delete a lot of contacts, all people I can very much handle . What, did you memorize this person's number?!” Leo was clearly growing annoyed at the secrets, as Izumi let out a sigh, pinching the bridge of her nose.
“Yes, actually. Because despite it all I still had class with this asshole and had to do a project with them once, but refused to save them as a contact!”
Instantly, as soon as Izumi said that, she fell silent. Everyone in the room had put together who it was, aside from Hinata.
It didn’t take her long to realize though, as Tsukasa silently typed the last sentence Hinata needed to realize herself, not looking away from Leo.
It was him.
Leo had been frozen, eyes seeming to dim a little, and anger instantly cooling. If Hinata was being honest with herself… Leo looked lost.
Lost… and broken.
Hinata didn’t like how much she knew that feeling from just seeing how Leo’s eyes looked, as she shifted a little closer to Tsukasa, afraid that she would disappear if Hinata went too far away.
“Why… why would he call..?” Leo asked quietly, voice strangely timid as Izumi’s expression softened from irritation to one of worry, holding up a finger to signal for everyone to stay quiet and not move forward yet.
“I don’t know Leo-kun.”
“He’s going to leave a voicemail Sena-”
“Leo-kun, you know you don’t want to listen to that-”
“But-!” Leo’s breathing sped up a little, tears pricking the corners of her eyes. “I- I shouldn’t have missed his call, and I should listen to the voicemail so I know…”
Arashi noticeably had balled her hands into fists, but hadn’t moved, as Ritsu bit his tongue. Hinata noticed Tsukasa had one of her hands on her own leg, digging her nails in, as Hinata moved to put her hand over Tsukasa’s.
Understanding instantly, Tsukasa shifted to lace their hands together instead, squeezing Hinata’s instead, as Izumi stayed still and somehow calm.
“You shouldn’t have done anything Leo…” Leo seemed a little more alert as Izumi dropped the suffix, as Izumi slowly held out a hand. Palm down, Hinata noted. “You don’t have to do shit for him. Don’t think you have to. You know that’s what he probably wants…”
Hinata realized what Izumi had offered finally, as Leo reached out and took her hand, squeezing it tightly before lunging forward, Izumi quickly wrapping her in a tight hug.
Izumi started whispering soft words to Leo, before signaling something to Tsukasa. Hinata shifted back to let Tsukasa move over, taking Leo’s phone and walking back to Hinata’s side.
Unlocking it, Tsukasa saw there was a voicemail and frowned, turning the volume onto the lowest it could be so Leo wouldn’t hear as she listened to it.
Hinata couldn’t hear it too well, but could tell it was definitely a ploy to try and get Leo back.
Tsukasa simply deleted it, setting the phone down on a table and sighing.
She also took Hinata’s hand again, squeezing it again.
The entire room stayed still, as Izumi slowly calmed Leo down, as she stayed clinging to the other.
A small, whispered conversation, before Izumi looked up at the rest of them.
“Kuma-kun, you can stay in my dorm for the night. Hinata-chan, can Kasa-chan stay with you as well?”
Ritsu and Hinata were quick to nod, as Izumi offered them a rare, soft smile. Hinata noticed how much care she held in it, and realized that without speaking another word, Izumi had given them more thank yous then Hinata had ever heard.
A look targeted at Hinata directly from Izumi also held one more thank you. Thanking her for understanding.
Hinata simply nodded in response to that, as they all heard Leo’s voice speak up again softly.
“I’m- I'm sorry…”
Tsukasa was the one to respond, still tightly holding onto Hinata’s hand to help keep herself calm.
“Leo-san, don’t apologize. No one here is mad at you.”
“S-Sena was…”
“Izumi-chan was mad at that man for trying to call you after what he’s done,” Arashi chimed in, as everyone could notice Leo’s body was slowly relaxing in Izumi’s hold. A hold that Izumi was still taking care to make sure Leo didn’t feel trapped, while rubbing the crying girls back softly. “All we want is for you to be safe and happy…”
Leo nodded, sniffling and still holding onto Izumi, speaking up one last time.
“I’m… sorry for ruining the night…”
“Don’t be, Tsukipi. You haven’t ruined it.” Ritsu’s voice was much softer, Hinata remembering the last time she heard it being during one of her own bad days, as Ritsu hummed softly. “We all love you Tsukipi, no matter what. All of Knights are always here for you. You and Secchan get some rest, and tomorrow we can all meet at the coffee shop Suu-chan’s girlfriend works at, and we’ll have a fun morning. Does that sound good?”
Leo nodded, as the rest of them stood up.
“Good night…” Leo almost whispered, as the 4 of them moving to leave all looked back and smiled softly.
“Good night.” They all almost said in union, before exiting the dorm.
Once the small group a few steps away from the room, Tsukasa let out a small sigh, loosening her grip on Hinata’s hand.
Hinata looked up, silently asking Tsukasa if she was ok and getting a softer look in response, before Arashi spoke up.
“What did he say in the voicemail.”
“He said pure and utter bullshit. That’s what.” Tsukasa’s voice was possibly the angriest Hinata had ever heard. Tsukasa had been hurt during their fight, but this was pure hate.
“But what , Suu-chan. We know what bullshit he uses. And we all know he knows where Tsukipi likes going, so if he’s going to be there we need to know.” Tsukasa sighed, knowing Ritsu was right.
“He just said they should meet up again, it’s been a while and they’ve both changed a lot. The same “I know I’ve messed up, but I’m better now” bullshit he pulled before.” Arashi huffed, as Hinata stayed quiet.
She didn’t know if she should be here, but Tsukasa kept her close, almost like she needed Hinata at this moment.
“If I see him I’ll punch him. But… for now, it’s late. Get some rest you guys…” Arashi smiled softly, ruffling Hinata and Tsukasa’s hair, and waving to Ritsu before walking off.
Ritsu nodded, waving as well and they all split off.
Tsukasa didn’t drop their hands the entire walk back to Hinata’s dorm, as she unlocked the door and let Tsukasa in, shutting the door behind them both.
Taking off her shoes, Hinata could hear Tsukasa take a few deep breaths, doing the same before looking over at Hinata.
“I’m sorry about that, I should’ve offered to let you leave once we thought it was him calling. I know you had a long day…”
“Kasa…” Hinata paused, walking over and cupping Tsukasa’s face, seeing her lean into the touch. “Don’t apologize dear, you wanted to be there to help her. She’s like family, you said that already. I’d never see anyone differently because they’d been hurt by others. The only thing that it changed, is that it showed I fell in love with the right person…”
“Hinata..? What do you mean..?”
“Kasa, you care for me and your friends, learning different ways to best comfort us all. You love me, and you love them. Not in the same way, of course, but still so so much…” A small smile, as Tsukasa seemed to have relaxed, before Hinata moved to give her a quick kiss.
“Thank you Hinata… I’m happy to take a little time to learn what you need though if it means I can help you through those bad moments.”
“I love you Kasa…” Hinata hummed, her heart skipping a beat as Tsukasa spoke. “Lets get some sleep, ok?~”
“Alright, I love you too Hinata…”
Despite it being a stressful day, the two managed to relax once they finally got to lay down, Hinata cuddling into her chest.
It was scary, and Hinata really did hope it’d be ok for Leo and Izumi, but she was tired and really happy to relax.
It’d be ok… it’d be ok.
-----
Hinata hadn’t been ready for a message from that man, almost dropping her phone while laying on Tsukasa’s lap.
Tsukasa looked down at her, a little confused.
“Hina?~” Tsukasa lightly teased her, as she looked up. “You alright there?”
Hinata simply laughed softly, nodding and shifting, still happily resting her head on Tsukasa’s legs.
“I’m good, just those random moments when you panic thinking you’ve forgotten something and then remembering you’re good, you know?~” Tsukasa gave a small hum in response, starting to play with Hinata’s hair.
“Mhm, what was it you thought you forgot?”
“The big review you made sure we got done the night it was assigned, but that’s due tomorrow?” Hinata hummed, as Tsukasa simply smiled, kissing her forehead.
They fell back to the comfortable silence between them, as Hinata shut her eyes.
Comfortable silence maybe, but Hinata felt like shit.
As soon as Tsukasa had asked, she lied without hesitation.
And Tsukasa bought it. Which isn’t what Hinata was hurting over.
It was how quickly she lied, knowing who it was messaging her.
Why was she so afraid to tell Tsukasa?
Afraid Tsukasa would realize what she was truly like…?
Or afraid Hinata wouldn’t understand what her relationship with him was?
God, not even her own brother knew. Probably for the best…
With a small sigh, Hinata snuggled even closer to Tsukasa, who let out an affectionate hum. She had no idea…
Hinata really felt like shit, but for now was happy she didn’t know…
I’ll tell her soon, I promise.
-----
Hinata wasn’t ready to deal with this, not at the coffee shop.
But Yuuta had been closer to her phone while she was finishing up a drink, smiling as the shop was fairly quiet minus a few customers, all with headphones and working on their own things.
Which is why Hinata could feel the mood grow tense, as she heard Yuuta pick up her phone from behind her.
“Hinata.” Yuuta’s voice was… dangerous. Not a comforting one at all.
Hinata couldn’t remember the last time that tone was aimed at her, but paired with him using her name left her at one conclusion.
She was fucked.
She really didn’t want to turn around.
“ Hinata . Don’t try to lie your way out of this, look at me.” Yuuta hadn’t moved, but his voice wasn’t getting softer. That only confirmed what it was. He had messaged her again, and Yuuta had seen.
Hinata simply kept her grip on the counter in front of her, trying to figure out what mask and explanation she even goes for, as Yuuta let out a huff.
“Hinata, last chance before I just start looking through your phone.”
Hinata hated how fast that made her turn around, a panic taking over her body.
How many times had both her and Yuuta heard that threat? Normally followed by losing access to said object no matter what they did?
Yuuta seemed to have realized what he said when he saw Hinata’s face, anger dropping a little, but not cooling completely.
“Hinata- hey, I’m not him.” Yuuta said, voice a little softer as Hinata took a minute to breathe. Yuuta didn’t move closer, letting Hinata steady her heart for a moment before nodding.
“Yeah, you’re… you’re not.”
“I’m just Yuuta.”
“Mhm…”
“Because we survived on our own, without needing him.”
“Right.”
“Because you fought hard, and now we’re safe and in college.”
“Yeah…”
“Which is why, I have to ask,” Yuuta’s previous anger seemed to rise back after making sure Hinata wasn’t responding to him like she would to him . “Why the fuck is he messaging you? Not exactly phrased like it was the first time in the years we’ve been away.”
Handing Hinata her phone, she scanned the text with a small sigh. It was one of his little check-ins, not something she felt the need to worry about or get upset over, but she knew her feelings were different from Yuuta’s.
“Yuuta, he’s still our father-”
“That man lost the right to be my father years ago. He should have lost the right to be yours as well!”
Hinata bit her tongue, looking at her phone again.
“Look, we- we both get off our shift in a little less than an hour. Can we talk then? Please?” Yuuta's hands balled into fists, digging his nails into his palms, but he nodded.
“Once we get off. You’re not allowed to run off before we talk, ok?”
“I understand.”
Yuuta sighed, before turning to grab something from the back, as Hinata turned back to face the door, keeping an eye out for customers.
She didn’t understand why she felt so guilty responding to his text. It was her father!
He was trying to get better.
Hinata didn’t understand why she still felt bad, as she had easily gone back to acting like nothing happened between her and her father.
The shift felt like it took ages. But somehow it also went far too fast, as the other co-workers came in, and Hinata and Yuuta left.
Yuuta had just started walking, Hinata followed without either of them having to exchange a word.
Quietly, Yuuta spoke up.
“Is your roommate out?”
“Mhm, with his friends actually…” Hinata saw Yuuta nod, looking back at her.
“Can we go to your room in that case?”
Another nod, as they both kept walking.
Hinata let them both into the room, shutting the door behind them and praying they still wouldn’t end up getting too loud in the fight, as she looked back at Yuuta.
Yuuta still looked pissed, not as in control of managing his expression now that they were in private.
“...Why.” Yuuta finally just asked, as Hinata paused.
Why… had she?
“...He wants to be better, Yuuta.”
“He should’ve been better years ago.”
“Yuuta, you know he wasn’t exactly decent back then. Don’t forget he loved her as much as we did…” Hinata sighed, seeing Yuuta pause, before letting out a scoff, shaking his head.
“It doesn’t matter how he felt then! If he was perfectly fine or not, that doesn’t change that we were his kids!! Once our mom died we should’ve all been there for each other. We should’ve been closer than ever. We were children, and instead of being there for us, he called us freaky, and monsters, and ignored us.”
Hinata couldn’t argue, which is what seemed to both prove Yuuta’s point but also left him upset.
“Hinata- that’s my point. The reason we take so many shifts is because we’re paying for this all ourselves. He turned his back on us and we learned to survive, all he gave us was a roof over our heads and access to running water. But he still would take our stuff. We’re adults, and we’re free from him. And now he wants to be better?! That’s… bullshit. It’s bullshit. You don’t have to talk to him…”
Yuuta then let out a sigh, as Hinata just looked down. Walking over, Yuuta hugged Hinata softly, as she let out a small gasp, before tightly hugging him back.
“Hinata… no matter what, I love you.”
“I love you too Yuuta…”
“I can’t make you do anything, but take care of yourself, ok?”
Hinata nodded, as Yuuta hugged her a little tighter.
Hinata didn’t let herself cry, instead letting out a soft sigh as Yuuta stepped back.
“I’m gonna go, ok?”
“Alright…”
“Take care.”
“I will.”
Sorry Yuuta…
But we both know that’s a lie…
-----
Hinata hadn’t been expecting for one of the times she left her phone out in the open when she was hanging out with Tsukasa for him to call, but it seemed fate had been against her recently.
Hinata almost fell asleep, but shot up the moment she saw the caller ID, startling Tsukasa from her book.
Tsukasa marked her page, as she turned to look at Hinata’s phone.
“Your dad is calling..? I wasn’t aware he was even a part of your life with how you’ve talked about it just being you and Yuuta-”
Hinata wasn’t even really listening, scrambling to grab the phone and pausing.
“Uh- I’ll be right back, ok?” Hinata smiled softly, seeing Tsukasa open her mouth, but not waiting to let her and instead turning, stepping out into a hallway and shutting the door.
She wasn’t ready to show that mask to Tsukasa yet, as she took a deep breath before picking up.
“Hey Dad, Sorry it took me a moment, I wasn’t expecting you to call…” Hinata made sure she didn’t sound too distressed, as her father sighed on the other end.
“Is it a problem that I called?” A dangerous question, as Hinata knew the wrong answer here could lead to a much less pleasant conversation.
“Nope! Not at all, I just needed a moment to make sure I could pick up!” Hinata heard him hum, relaxing a little. “What do you need? We normally call on Sundays to catch up after all.”
“I heard a lot of families will come to visit your college in the next week, to see their kids.” Well, Hinata was back to being more tense again.
She learned how to tell when people were irritated from the slightest change in their voice, after all.
She learned her fathers signs the most.
And so she knew that he wasn’t pleased she hadn’t mentioned it.
She just had to pray learning how to master lying wouldn’t fail her now.
“Ah? I wasn’t aware, I definitely would’ve told you if I had!” A pause, knowing that the silence wasn’t exactly good nor bad, but impossible to read without a face.
She heard a small sound from the room behind her, knowing Tsukasa was probably still waiting for her, and definitely worried.
“Why do you mention it?”
“I’ll be coming to visit as well. I’d like to meet your roommate and friends, since you’ve mentioned your brother isn’t staying with you.”
Shit shit shit-
“That sounds great, see you then?”
“Mhm.”
As soon as she knew that the call was done, Hinata took a shaky breath, head thunking back against the door and sliding down it, bringing her knees to her chest.
That hurt, but she didn’t really mind the pain over her own internal screaming.
Her father was coming to visit.
The man who hadn’t seen her in person for years, and only just recently started even messaging her.
To meet her friends and roommate.
The roommate who was the brother to the man who took Yuuta and Hinata in when they needed a family.
Both of them knowing their story and taking Yuuta’s side when it comes to feelings for him, being distaste and anger.
And friends who didn’t know he existed, but knew that Hinata and Yuuta lived on the streets for some time.
She was fucked.
Tsukasa had to have heard the thud against the door, as suddenly she felt the door being opened behind her, as Tsukasa crouched down next to her.
“Hinata… can I touch you..?”
Hinata nodded, feeling herself already on the verge of tears, as Tsukasa gently rubbed her back.
“Come on, let's go back inside at least…” Tsukasa’s voice was soft, as she picked Hinata up and shut the door behind them once they were inside.
Hinata shifted to snuggle into Tsukasa, as Tsukasa simply kissed her head in return.
Being set back down on the bed, Tsukasa let Hinata guide her, as they both laid down, Hinata burying her face into Tsukasa’s chest and starting to cry softly, as Tsukasa started to gently play with her hair.
“I’m right here, take your time Hinata… I’m not going anywhere…” Hinata nodded. She didn’t like crying.
She hated breaking down like this.
But Tsukasa had always been supportive of her, and always made her feel safe.
So, for now, Hinata could let herself cry, as Tsukasa held her close, whispering soft words of comfort and love.
And as Hinata calmed down, Tsukasa asked the question she knew was coming, but still dreaded hearing.
“Who is that man to you..? What made you so scared when he called, and crying when it was over..?” Tsukasa’s voice was soft, and Hinata knew answering wasn’t necessary…
It’d probably be easier if she didn’t answer, honestly.
But instead, she spoke up, having sorted the truth to make sure it didn’t sound so bad.
“My father, we’d been distant for a while, but he’s reaching out again to… try and make it better. I guess I’m still not used to talking to him…”
And Hinata hated that it was convincing, and that Tsukasa just nodded, kissing her forehead.
Hinata hated that she had mastered her mask, and that she couldn’t just drop it around the one person she’d found herself trusting the most.
“Well… Take your time Hinata, he’d have to understand it’s weird to talk to him again after so long…”
“Yeah… you’re right Kasa.” Hinata smiled softly, as Tsukasa nodded, kissing her softly.
“I’ll be by your side every step of the way if you need me, ok?” Tsukasa wore a loving smile, as Hinata nodded.
She ignored how much her heart hurt, seeing such love aimed at her as she kept lying and hiding things from Tsukasa.
But… she couldn’t stop now, instead pressing their lips together again, before breaking the kiss, keeping their foreheads together.
“I’ll let you know when I need you, ok? Until then, just say as wonderful as you are.”
I’m so sorry Tsukasa, please never find out how many lies I’ve pressed to your lips…
Just know every I love you was nothing but the truth…
-----
Hinata couldn’t stop the feeling of dread as the date her father told he’d visit drew closer.
Hinata could tell people were noticing, but no one wanted to mention it.
She didn’t want them to mention it either.
Hinata was aware that Tsukasa’s family seemingly couldn’t make it, and noticed the hint of relief in her girlfriend’s eyes.
Currently she had just been in the courtyard, working with Tsukasa on a math assignment they both had, before her phone started getting spammed with texts.
Looking over, there was one from her father, and… 15 and growing from Yuuta, as she quickly unlocked it to check.
Something came up, I'm visiting today.
Those were the words on her screen from her father, making Hinata pale, before quickly checking Yuuta’s.
Tsukasa looked over when Hinata had reacted to her fathers text, moving to wrap an arm around her as she opened Yuuta’s contact.
Aniki
Aniki why is he here
He’s never visited
Why the fuck is he here
Did you invite him?
Please don’t make me talk to him
I’m trying to stay out of his sight
Hinata please what-
Why would you want to see him???
Is that why you told me to take tomorrow off?
Please don’t talk to him yourself
You know it’s been better without him.
The texts seemed to stop once Hinata read them, Yuuta likely calming down once texts were being marked as read.
Hinata’s hands were trembling, as Tsukasa shot her a look, wanting to question since that seemed much different from what Hinata had mentioned to her, before pausing when Yuuta sent another text.
He’s going towards the courtyard, Aniki please talk to me after he leaves?
Hinata didn’t even reply, reacting to the last message with a thumbs up, and turning off her phone.
“Hinata..?” Tsukasa asked, as Hinata seemed strangely blank.
“You don’t have to stay here for this. Actually, you probably don’t want to.” Hinata replied, as Tsukasa’s face shifted to one of hurt.
Hinata felt bad, but right now she couldn’t even focus on that, keeping her eyes out for him.
“Hinata, I told you I’d be here for you. I love you. You don’t have to push me away because of a tense relationship…” Hinata wanted to accept that so much, but there was so much more to it than just being tense.
It was a relationship in which Hinata was walking on eggshells throughout it all.
And Hinata didn’t want to have others watch how good she’d become at balancing on it.
“Tsukasa- trust me, I don’t think you want to meet him.”
“Hinata, you don’t have to hide from me…”
A moment, as Hinata froze hearing that, biting back tears.
“You have no idea how much I do.” Hinata muttered, slipping Tsukasa’s arm off from around her waist and picking up the homework, letting out a shaky sigh.
“What do you mean..?” Tsukasa hesitantly asked, looking more hurt than ever as Hinata looked over.
“I’ll explain later- please… for now, follow my lead with him?”
Tsukasa paused, but nodded and went back to working on homework as well.
The minute Hinata caught sight of her father, Hinata smiled with a perfectly practiced expression, waving at him.
The man walked over, as Hinata willed herself to relax. Tsukasa looked up, smiling softly. Hinata noticed how it was forced, but only because she was used to it. Meaning she knew it was damn fake.
“Dad! Good to see you! It’s been so long!” Hinata set the homework down, as her father nodded in response.
“Mhm. Who’s this Hinata?” Her father gestured to Tsukasa. Hinata had that brief moment, where she wanted to give the answer she was so happy to be able to say, but instead she stopped.
“This is Tsukasa Suou, she’s a friend of mine.”
Hinata hated how saying that felt on her tongue. Tsukasa wasn’t just a friend.
But Hinata wasn’t sure how he’d react to that, and really didn’t want to find out.
She just hoped it didn’t hurt Tsukasa as much as it hurt her, as Tsukasa did a polite bow.
“Pleasure to meet you.”
“Pleasure to meet you as well. I hope Hinata hasn’t been a problem for you.”
Hinata looked away for a moment, making sure she didn’t let the pain show on her face, missing how Tsukasa’s expression flickered.
“No, she’s a good friend of mine, she’s not a problem.” Her father seemed satisfied with that answer, as Hinata packed up her stuff before looking over at Tsukasa.
“Well, I’m going to go show my dad around, see you later?”
A nod, as Hinata walked off with her father following.
It wasn’t as easy to hold simple conversations with him, as Hinata was always picking her words so carefully around him, while trying to be a good tour guide.
She didn’t quite understand why she was so nervous throughout this all, it was her father. He wanted to make things better, right?
She didn’t understand. Or, didn’t really understand until it started to make itself obvious.
Her father made lots of comments on her and her choices, that while Hinata started by thinking were just out of care, left with her starting to feel less and less positive.
She just… didn’t understand. She wanted this to work, wanted her father to be her dad again, but wasn’t exactly feeling as happy as she normally had been.
She really hadn’t meant to bump into Knights and Rei and Kaoru either.
But she knew the minute two different pairs or red eyes locked eyes on her father, this was going to end poorly.
“Hina!!! Good to see you!” Leo cheerfully called out to her, seemingly the only one who wasn’t aware of how much tenser the air was. “Say, who’s that with you?”
“Hey Tsukinaga-senpai, this is… my dad.” Hinata smiled softly, as Rei scanned her for a moment, before simply grabbing Hinata’s hand, pulling her over to him.
Rei was glaring daggers at her father , an expression that Ritsu and Kaoru seemed to match, all being a little weaker.
Arashi and Izumi seemed to put something together, as Leo looked up at Izumi confused.
Hinata suddenly realized this wasn’t going to be pleasant, as Rei had a protective hold around her.
“What are you doing here?” Rei asked, as her father gave him a glare in return.
“Visiting my daughter. Why did you pull her like that?”
“I don’t trust you around her.” Rei simply responded, looking down at Hinata and noticing her expression flickering from confused to scared.
“What do you mean by that?!” Hinata didn’t like that she flinched when her father raised his voice, but felt Rei pull her closer as Kaoru spoke up.
“Last I checked you weren’t really a part of her life?” Kaoru’s eyes narrowed, as he raised an arm in front of Hinata. “You don’t seem to take the time to care for her after all.”
Hinata didn’t like seeing this, suddenly feeling a pit in her stomach as she tried to speak up.
“Guys let’s not-”
“Not what?” Ritsu cut her off, looking over at her instead of her father. “Not stop you from interacting with this man?”
“Ritsu-senpai-”
“Hihi-chan, I haven’t had to come back to the dorm to find you in tears and telling me it was all nothing different times for whatever he’s done to you to be nothing. ” Ritsu looked back at her father, as Hinata froze.
“What has this brat told you about me.” Her father asked, as Hinata instantly noticed that tone. The dangerous one, despite sounding calm.
The one that Hinata knew meant backpedal immediately and save face, when she was in control of the conversation.
But she’s not. She’s being almost guarded, by people who seemed pissed off by her father even breathing.
“More like what she hasn’t told us. Hinata hasn’t ever talked bad about you, only mentioning her past and apologizing for what has left her hurt.” Rei spoke up, noticing how Hinata had gotten nervous and pulling her closer. “Yuuta is the one who’s told us about what you’ve done, about how you’ve left these two wonderful children hurt.”
“ Brat. ” Her father muttered, as Kaoru let out a scoff.
“Sure. We’ll go with that. Because brats would find themself driven to the edge from choices they made to hope their father would love them.” Kaoru heard Rei hum in agreement, as he sighed. “Because brats would find themselves with a group of seniors who take them in and give them a home so they won’t be alone.”
“Here’s the final point I want to make.” Rei said, looking her father dead in the eyes. “Brats who lied about their father would definitely end up with one of them sitting on the edge of the roof, with their brother trying to talk them down and with me having to pray it’ll be enough.”
Her father fell silent, but Hinata could tell he was getting pissed.
“Hinata. Explain.”
Hinata felt the shiver run up her spine, trying to figure out what to say to get out of this, as Ritsu spoke up instead.
“She doesn’t have to explain anything. Leave.”
“You can’t kick me out-”
“No, but I can keep you out of my dorm room, can’t I?~” Ritsu smirked, nudging Leo and Arashi. The two of them nodded, Leo pulling Izumi and Arashi dipping back to grab Hinata instead, as Rei let go.
“Hinata’s my child.”
“Hinata is over 18, and at this point I think I’ve been more of a father to her than you.” Rei chimed in, wearing a pissed smile.
Hinata didn’t get to hear the rest, as Arashi pulled her away, Izumi and Leo followed close behind.
“Alright dear, now I see why they don’t talk about your family much…” Arashi muttered, pulling Hinata along as she tried to just… process it all.
Her father sounded annoyed that she had been suicidal.
Not concerned.
Annoyed.
“Asshole, honestly.” Izumi spat, as she tapped Hinata’s shoulder. “Can I see your phone? Unlock it.”
Hinata didn’t really think about why, just unlocking it and handing it to the other, listening to Leo who seemed to be on a call.
“Suo? Are you in the dorm right now? Oh, you’re not? Ok ok, go to Hina’s dorm in that case, she’s not doing so well. Yes it’s because of that stupid man. Hopefully she’ll explain, the rest of us found out a little more while sitting there, apparently Rittsu knew more.”
Hinata felt herself start shaking once she realized Tsukasa was going to find out about all her lies, sniffling as Arashi pulled her into a side hug as they kept walking.
“Deep breaths Hinata-chan, no one is mad you didn’t want to talk about him-”
Hinata couldn’t help the small sob that slipped out though, as Izumi looked up from what she was doing on Hinata’s phone, handing it back.
“Hey, what’s eating your mind..?” Izumi asked quietly, seeing how Hinata was only crying harder than before.
“I-I haven’t- I never thought…” Hinata tried to say, but cut herself off again with another sob, noticing how as they walked past people Arashi and Izumi would send harsh glares to anyone giving a judging look, and Leo would lightly wave away the people who seemed to want to rush over out of concern.
Hinata already knew this was going to become a big thing, with how many people on campus at least knew her in passing at the coffee shop.
Leo seemed to fill in the gaps of what Hinata was trying to say though, speaking up.
“You didn’t realize he was like that? That he’d respond like that to people standing up for you..?” Hinata nodded, seeing Leo have a sympathetic look, offering a sad smile. “Yeah… I get that… sometimes it takes these shattering moments to realize that, which sucks. But, you have us, you have your friends back there standing up for you, and you have Suo, who is currently rushing to your dorm since she’s worried about you.”
Hinata felt her body start trembling a bit more, very happy that Arashi was holding her side, as Leo sped up to stand next to her, Izumi falling back behind them. Hinata felt Leo put a hand on her shoulder, gently squeezing it once she was sure Hinata was ok with the contact.
“...I know you’re scared to see Suo, but she’s not going to be mad that you’ve hidden things because of him. She’s better than that. I’ve had that fear myself, but I promise, she’s more worried about you being ok.” Leo gave a reassuring smile, as Hinata nodded slightly, wiping away tears.
“Promise..?”
“Mhm, I promise.” Hinata nodded, sniffling, smiling softly in return. “And if she is a jerk about it Knights will scold her for it I promise!”
Hinata found a small laugh leaving her throat, as Arashi and Izumi both shot her a small smile as well.
They reached her door at about the same time Tsukasa came running over, out of breath and panicked.
“H-Hinata?”
“Kasa-” Hinata barely choked out, feeling Arashi let go as she ran to hug Tsukasa, starting to cry into her chest.
Hinata didn’t realize how much she needed Tsukasa to be here, despite how afraid she was to tell Tsukasa these secrets, until she was in her warm embrace.
“Do you think you’ve got this covered Kasa-chan?” Izumi asked, as Tsukasa let out a soft hum in response, hugging Hinata tightly.
“I’ve got this Sena-senpai, I’ll keep you updated.”
“Alright Suo, make sure she’s ok.” Leo added, as Tsukasa nodded.
“Come on, let’s make sure those 3 haven’t committed a murder…” Arashi turned after that, as Izumi and Leo both followed her.
Hinata had given Tsukasa a spare key, which came in handy so that Hinata didn’t have to let go of her when she opened the door, moving them inside.
Shutting the door, Hinata found herself crying harder once she realized that it was truly just Tsukasa and her. She was clutching onto Tsukasa’s shirt, noticing that instead of trying to make it further into the dorm, Tsukasa simply slowly sat them both down.
Tsukasa’s back was against the door, Hinata sitting on her lap, as Tsukasa started gently rubbing her back.
“You’re safe Hinata, I promise. I’ll be here, so let it out.”
That was all Tsukasa said, but what made Hinata give up on trying to make herself stop, and just let herself break.
Because she had put it together.
She had finally realized that Yuuta was right, and she shouldn’t have tried to forgive him.
But she did.
Because she still had that hope.
Because at a young age, she forced herself to grow up, and deep down all she wanted was her father to care.
And that realization had come crashing down on her after years of denial and hope, which had been tied to the fact that he didn’t seem to care when he found out she was suicidal.
Hinata knew deep down the reason why she had been on the roof that day. She knew Yuuta had to as well. But she had lied to herself about it too.
It was because of choices she had made, because of seaking that love from her father.
And so she cried, because after years and years of locking this all away, it was too painful to try to understand.
And only once her eyes were dry, did Tsukasa speak up again.
“Do you want to talk? This conversation can wait as long as you need.”
Hinata still had to wonder how despite the mess she made for herself, she’d found someone so understanding and caring as Tsukasa.
“I… can’t possibly try to explain how much I want to say that we should wait, but I know I’d never do this if I don’t do it now…” Hinata’s voice was weak from crying, as she looked up at Tsukasa.
Her face had to be a mess, but Tsukasa simply cupped her face and gently wiped away some tears, offering a small, loving smile.
“I’ll listen, so take your time.”
Hinata nodded, sniffling and leaning into the touch on her face, shutting her eyes for just a moment.
“I’m… kinda coming to terms with this myself… so I’m sorry if this is hard to hear.” Hinata gave a nervous smile, before sighing softly. “When… Yuuta and I were young, our mother died. It left us devastated, which- you know, kind of makes sense, but right after that our father kind of… turned his back on us. He couldn’t tell us apart, since at that time we really were practically identical… so he just insulted us. Called us freaky, monsters, demons… anything really…”
Hinata took a moment to keep herself from crying again, noticing Tsukasa’s expression had shifted to one of concern, but staying silent to let her continue.
“So, after that, we kinda left him behind mostly. The house was still ours, so we could go to our room for shelter, but the rest was all us. I… kinda changed everything about my personality at that point, mastered the art of deception and minor theft, and would take any job I could. It… isn’t my proudest accomplishment, but it made sure we survived. Once we were 18, I got us an apartment, before we finally got to college. Then we went with the dorms since it was cheaper with applying for some aid and earning scholarships, and we made it all work.”
Hinata smiled softly, remembering how happy they’d both got when they saw they were accepted, how happy Yuuta had been once they moved out for good, despite it being a fairly small apartment. All of those sacrifices, Hinata never regretted when she saw her brother happy.
Taking a shaky sigh, Hinata spoke up again.
“I… mentioned a while ago how I had been… suicidal before. That… came from what I had done to seek his love, changing everything I was so that we wouldn’t be identical. In doing that, I went too far into my mask and… hoping to free Yuuta from the curse of sharing a face, aimed to remove myself from that picture.” Hinata found her throat closing up, having finally admitted this to not just someone else but herself. Tsukasa gently caressed her cheek, as she smiled softly. “I’m… so glad Yuuta stopped me. It left Sakuma-senpai and Yuuta worried about me though, and that’s why Ritsu-senpai knows so much about that part of my life too…”
“To make sure you’ll be safe in the dorm..?” Tsukasa finished for her, as she nodded.
Hinata sighed, moving to hide her face in Tsukasa’s shoulder, enjoying the warmth. She was alive, and made it to find Tsukasa.
“And then he came back into my life, and I was hopeful, so now this happened.” Hinata muttered, taking in a deep breath. “Which… I guess it was good, because it was a good wakeup call… I just wish this would’ve been something I could’ve realized in like- therapy, or something.”
Tsukasa let out a small laugh, kissing her head and making Hinata relax a little.
“I’m… sorry, for lying about him…”
Tsukasa looked down at her, nudging Hinata to make her look up.
“Don’t apologize, I’m not mad. I’m just happy you’ve realized this now…” Tsukasa smiled, making Hinata smile back. “I didn’t like him the moment you started describing him, and seeing that… mask, when you were talking to him made me hate him more. I’m glad you’re ready to be free of that…”
And Hinata paused, before the softest smile took over her face.
To be free of that.
Somehow, that felt like the right word for this.
“Mhm… I’m not ever gonna be free from what he’s… left me with, but…” A pause, as she cuddled into Tsukasa’s chest.
A deep breath, and Hinata realized this was more of a promise to herself.
“I’ll start on that path, to free myself from trying to get his care. I don’t need him.”
I don’t need him.
He wasn’t there when I did, and I don’t need to drag myself down now.
I’ll live without worrying about his validation. I have the love and support I need now.
-----
Hinata didn’t leave her dorm for the rest of the day, Tsukasa staying inside with her.
She realized that when she had given Izumi her phone, she had gone to block and delete her fathers contact. Hinata panicked a little when she realized, but also realized that she definitely needed that to happen.
Even if it left her needing to be calmed down and reassured.
Yuuta had called her, telling her that their father was banned from the campus after what happened, as he had gotten a little hostile, and also informed Hinata to thank Rei.
Hinata agreed, before she ended up crying on the call to her brother, apologizing and explaining a bit of what she realized and had hidden.
Her brother was very understanding, although Hinata realized he was crying a little as well, seemingly out of guilt. Hinata was aware they were definitely going to have to talk more, but for now that was enough.
Ritsu came back to the dorm late, having brought dinner for both himself and the two of them, simply checking in on Hinata before chatting with them both like nothing happened.
It was nice, it made Hinata happy to not have to deal with the messy emotions that day. Ritsu had learned how to make sure Hinata would be ok after difficult days, and that night ended with Hinata smiling, cuddling with Tsukasa while Ritsu stayed up to do whatever he did.
Hinata never really knew what he did, and ended up after the first month of rooming with him giving up.
It was only the next day that Hinata realized how much happened.
Working at the shop meant that once she got there (30 minutes before they opened, a perfect amount of time to get everything ready and even a drink for herself and Tsukasa who she’d sneak in, if it was just her), she was a little surprised to see Yuuta.
They met eyes, as Hinata stayed still, dropping Tsukasa’s hand.
Taking a step forward, Yuuta didn’t speak, but opened his arms as Hinata closed the distance between them, hugging him tightly.
Tsukasa smiled, nodding to Yuuta who nodded in return, as Tsukasa left the store. Hinata knew she had a class, so she wasn’t upset, instead holding on tighter to Yuuta.
“I’m sorry Yuuta-”
“It’s ok Aniki, I promise… I wish I had understood back then, but… I’m happy you told me now…”
Hinata could tell they were both on the verge of tears, so she moved back from the hug, looking up at Yuuta before pinching his cheek.
“Hehe~ Yuuta’s always such a cry baby, don’t cry over me realizing the sad past and being honest!” Yuuta had started pouting at her pinching his cheek, lightly batting at her hand and huffing. Hinata did let go, as Yuuta crossed his arms and huffed.
“God- see if I worry for you again.” Hinata could tell that was nothing but a bluff, as she just laughed before turning to start opening up shop.
“Yeah yeah, let's get ready for today, alright?” Hinata smiled, as Yuuta lovingly flipped her off.
Once the store was open, the usual dynamic and banter was going on. Lots of people saw Hinata and asked her about yesterday, making sure she was ok to which she nodded, confirming drink orders and moving on.
It was when Rei and Kaoru arrived that Hinata finally understood what Yuuta had meant, pausing and looking over.
“Sakuma-senpai..?” Hinata wasn’t ready to see the man who was like a father to her (the only father to her now, aside from maybe Kaoru at this point), with a nasty bruise on his face.
Rei simply smiled softly, Yuuta nodding to let Hinata take her break and jump the counter, rushing over to him.
“Hinata, I’m glad to see you’re doing better.” Rei reached down to cup her face, as she just stared up at him, before looking over to Kaoru.
“Did-”
“Yes, that was from him,” Kaoru sighed, before ruffling Hinata’s hair, as she just blinked up confused. “Don’t worry, Rei doesn’t seem bothered in the slightest.”
“Why would I be?” Rei hummed, noticing how Hinata’s face somehow grew to be even more confused. “The fact that the man who claimed to be your father got angry at me for taking care of you better then him, and ended with him being banned from campus?~ I’ll wear this with pride.”
Hinata just looked at Rei like he was insane, but did end up smiling softly as well.
“Thank you dad… really…” Rei paused when she said that, before pulling her into a tight hug, looking up at Kaoru.
“She called me dad-”
“I heard Rei-”
“But-”
“Shh,” Kaoru pressed a finger to Rei’s lip, as Hinata giggled softly and hugged Rei back tightly. “If you start crying here I’ll break up with you right now.”
“How could you!” Rei let out a dramatic gasp, jokingly pulling Hinata tighter. “Can you believe this, you finally accepted us as parents, and now your other dad threatens to leave us…”
“I’ll keep Hinata idiot, just leave you.”
“Divorce only hurts the children in the end…”
“...We aren’t even married yet-”
Yuuta snorted from behind the counter, as Hinata was muffling her giggles into Rei since he was still hugging her in the most dramatic way possible.
“Do you two idiots wanna let me steal back my sister so we can keep working, and place an order?” Yuuta called over, as Rei sighed and let Hinata go.
“The hardest part of being a parent is letting them go…” Rei sighed, leaning into Kaoru the way a mother might when she watched her children move out.
Kaoru just rolled his eyes, glancing over at Rei with an affectionate, although also annoyed look.
“They’re literally just going back to their job.” Hinata shrugged, jumping the counter again and walking behind the register.
“Anyway~ the usual?” Hinata hummed, ending the conversation and instead letting it shift to the normal morning routine.
Hinata enjoyed this, the comfort of chatting with regulars, horsing around with Yuuta when it was calm, before jumping back to their usual positions and customer service when someone came in, everything that had been part of the usual.
Which meant, like normal, Yuuta would let her leave about 15 minutes before the end of their shift, so Hinata could go find Tsukasa.
Running out of the shop, she did appreciate that having learned acrobatics made it easier to go through campus quickly.
Maybe learning proper parkour would be smart, but her self taught worked pretty well, even if she scared some of her friends by literally jumping over them and waving hi.
It didn’t matter, not when it let her near tackle Tsukasa the moment she walked out of the building she was in for her class.
A thing Tsukasa had adapted to, and easily caught Hinata, spinning her before setting her down.
“Hello there princess, back at it again tackling me?~” Tsukasa lightly teased, as Hinata just shrugged, stealing a quick kiss.
“Only because I know my knight will catch me!~” Hinata didn’t miss the way Tsukasa’s face softened at the nickname. These names always made both of them smile.
Hinata did jump up and was pleased that Tsukasa easily caught her in a bridal style hold, starting to walk off.
“Where am I escorting you to today?~”
“Hmm… anywhere my knight pleases!~” Hinata pressed a kiss to Tsukasa’s cheek, earning a small hum.
“Mind if we go to the other 4 then?” Tsukasa looked down at Hinata, who nodded. “They’ll be happy to see you’re ok, probably won’t question you too much. Well- Leo-san might, but you can ignore her.”
Hinata giggled, nodding and snuggling into Tsukasa, as she walked off to the rest of Knights.
Leo let out a happy gasp once she saw the two of them, waving excitedly and smiling brightly.
“Suo! Hina!! I’m glad you’re both ok! Rittsu told us you were doing better but it’s still good to see you both!!!” Hinata and Tsukasa both found themselves smiling at how happy Leo was, sitting down.
Izumi might’ve rolled her eyes at Hinata simply sitting on Tsukasa’s lap instead of beside her, but it’s not like Leo wasn’t often half laying on her, so she couldn’t say anything.
Hinata just snuggled into Tsukasa though, confirming that Izumi was in fact judging them with her scoffing slightly.
“We’re so glad you’re feeling better dear, Izumi-chan was so worried despite the fact she’d never admit it!~” Arashi teased, as Izumi’s face went red from embarrassment.
“Shut up.”
“Huh? But she’s right, Sena!!!” Leo chimed in, as Izumi just covered her mouth.
“Both of you, shut it.”
Ritsu smirked, doing a fake yawn and stretching, before sliding Hinata and Tsukasa his phone, showing Izumi’s worried messages.
Izumi probably would’ve tried to murder Ritsu if Leo didn’t hold her back, as Hinata and Tsukasa both started laughing.
Hinata liked this, and even if the 4 of them started arguing, Hinata found herself smiling as Tsukasa moved to start peppering her face with kisses.
This was perfect.
It’s nice, not having to hide from her. I don’t want to lose this.
-----
Being pulled into a dance by Tsukasa was a ton of fun, most of the time.
But it had been raining lightly as they were laughing and dancing through campus, so they shouldn’t have been surprised when Tsukasa tried to dip Hinata that her foot slipped.
And as Hinata tried to cling to the other, Tsukasa also lost her footing, leading to them both falling, and Hinata’s back getting very wet.
Thank god Tsukasa cradled her head or else that would’ve hurt much worse, but still ow.
“Hinata?”
“Fuck- ow, my ass…” Hinata muttered, as Tsukasa tried her best not to laugh. Tsukasa pulled her to sit at least, as Hinata let out a small pained sound. “I’ve fallen enough to know what’s too bad but shit my ass hurts…”
Tsukasa muttered a small apology, as Hinata shifted a little, before pausing.
“Wait- your hands aren’t too badly hurt, right?”
“Huh? What do you mean Hinata?”
“You cradled my head before I hit the ground and you landed on me!” Hinata moved to grab Tsukasa’s hands, checking to make sure they weren’t too hurt. A bit of an imprint from the gravel, and definitely going to bruise, but not too bad. “You could’ve really hurt them from the force of both hitting the ground and my head’s pressure too! Be careful!”
Tsukasa gave her a look, making Hinata raise an eyebrow in confusion, before speaking up.
“It would’ve been much worse if I let your head hit the ground, my hands can take more than a skull.”
Hinata paused, realizing Tsukasa was right, and simply kissing Tsukasa’s hands in return.
“...fair, still, we should ice those.”
“We should also ice your back.”
“And my ass…”
“Really focused on that injury aren’t you.” Tsukasa affectionately rolled her eyes, standing up and helping Hinata up as well.
“Yes! I’m not sure if I should be hurt that my girlfriend isn’t worried about my ass as well!” Hinata pouted, making a face once she realized how uncomfortable the back half of her outfit being soaked was.
“Your girlfriend is a little more worried about your well being as a whole than just a part of you~”
“Well maybe she should worry about that part of me, it’s possibly my best feature.”
Tsukasa had rolled her eyes, about to respond before being cut off by a crack of thunder.
They both fell silent for a moment, before Hinata spoke up.
“Do you think-”
She didn’t get to finish that sentence, as the skies had opened up, and that once pleasant light rain turned into a heavy storm.
The dorms were much too far, but Hinata knew somewhere close.
“Follow me-!” Hinata yelled, grabbing Tsukasa’s hand and running off towards her desired destination, Tsukasa easily following.
Well, at least it wasn’t only half her clothing wet now, but this wasn’t really fair.
Running to the apartment door in mind, really hating that they didn’t have any cover over it, Hinata started knocking quickly.
“Who’s even out in this storm-” Was what they made out from the voice behind the door, before it opened slightly.
“Hakaze-senpai… can we come in?” Hinata gave a small smile, Tsukasa still holding her hand, as Kaoru basically pulled them inside in response.
“Rei- get some towels and two sets of the clothing we keep for when Hinata randomly comes over!” Kaoru yelled back further into the apartment, sighing. “Stay here for a moment, I’ll go make you guys something warm to drink, tea?”
The two of them nodded, staying still aside from taking off their shoes and socks. Kaoru had walked back to the kitchen, as Rei came in with towels and two different outfits.
“Dry off a little, then you two can go change in the bathroom. Anything else you need?” Rei asked softly, ruffling Hinata’s hair with a towel, as she laughed softly.
“Ice if you can?” Tsukasa asked, as Rei paused.
“...Of course? Explain after you change…” Rei sighed, walking off as they both moved to get dry and changed.
Hinata adored the fact that they were basically the same size, as it meant Hinata was able to see things bought for her on Tsukasa.
She was also happy to be dry and in a nice warm sweater.
As soon as they walked out of the bathroom though, having hung up both their towels and their clothing to dry, Kaoru grabbed Hinata by her shoulders.
Hinata only let out a few sounds of protest, before Kaoru made her stay still and started brushing out her hair.
Tsukasa only barely muffled laughter, as Hinata just pouted. Rei walked over, holding a few ice packs, and smiling softly at the scene.
Handing Tsukasa the ice, she smiled and wrapped it around her hands. After about a minute Hinata finally struggled free from Kaoru’s hold, huffing.
“Were you waiting for me just to instantly try to fix my hair?”
“Basically, since you never seem to care to style it.” Kaoru hummed, moving to put her hair clips in as well, as Hinata did smile softly at that.
She also then shook her head quickly, letting her hair fall more naturally, making Kaoru roll his eyes.
“Hinata, lay down.” Tsukasa muttered, gesturing to the couch. “We still need to ice your back.”
“Mmm… meanie.”
Hinata did still follow the order, so she knew Rei would tease her for that, as Rei moved to help put the ice on her.
“What happened to you two?” Rei asked, as Kaoru saw Tsukasa take off the ice from her hands to take a cup of tea.
“What was meant to be a romantic date dancing through the light rain led to me falling, hurting my back, and Kasa hurting her hands, before the rain changed to storming…” Hinata pouted, letting a small annoyed sound out when the ice was placed on her.
Rei and Kaoru shared a look, affectionate but also judging, as Tsukasa hummed.
“It was her idea.”
Hinata rolled her eyes, as Rei sat on the couch arm next to her, starting to gently play with her hair.
“Mhm, I see.” Rei hummed, noticing Hinata relaxed into the touch and shut her eyes. “That sounds like my child for you…”
“I’m just getting ganged up on…” Hinata groaned, as Rei chuckled softly, continuing to play with her hair and noticing how her eyes weren’t opening.
“I think you deserve it this time…~” Kaoru hummed, as Hinata raised one hand to flip him off.
Hinata would’ve wanted to continue arguing, but when the atmosphere was comforting like this, the rain outside soothing her alongside Rei’s fingers playing with her hair.
It felt like home, and Hinata wasn’t even aware of it when she drifted off to sleep.
She was only aware of that fact when she woke up, keeping her eyes shut and listening to the conversation, realizing she had in fact fallen asleep and now had no idea what was going on.
“Hinata really does care about you, you know?” Hinata picked that out as Rei’s voice, as she heard Tsukasa let out a small hum. Rei hadn’t seemed to have stopped playing with her hair, but the ice had been removed and replaced with a blanket, so it felt.
“We do mean it, really,” Kaoru chimed in, voice in the affectionate tone that was reserved for only those closest to him. “Hinata’s been talking about you for a while. That night she was terrified that she’d ruined your friendship, not even worried about the feelings she had too. She just wanted to stay friends with you.”
“I… really?” Tsukasa asked, as Rei and Kaoru both hummed.
“Really.” Rei answered, hand stilling for a moment, before continuing to stroke Hinata’s hair. “She fell for you fast, but waited in fear of losing you for good. She’d grown comfortable with people leaving her after getting close, sadly, so to see her fear of losing you confirmed to us that you were special.”
There was a silence, but one that didn’t feel uncomfortable, instead warming.
Hinata didn’t want to reveal that she was awake, but was really curious about how their expressions were.
“We have only one request of you,” Rei spoke again, as Hinata heard Tsukasa’s confused sound. “Take care of her, please. It’s clear she wants to do the same for you.”
There was silence, before Tsukasa spoke up.
“I promise. I love her with all my heart, I’ll take care of her.”
“You’ve already done a wonderful job, so keep your head up.” Kaoru added, as Hinata heard some rustling and Tsukasa giggling. She assumed that Kaoru had ruffled Tsukasa’s hair, which seemed fitting.
“We’ll wake Hinata up once the storm has passed, ok?” Rei asked, as Hinata zoned out again.
She was still tired, but now having heard that she found herself feeling so so safe…
I’ll have to pretend I didn’t hear this… but I’d love to thank them.
For being the parents I needed, and a person I can love so fully…
-----
Hinata didn’t know what to do, but this felt weird.
She didn’t like being suspicious of Tsukasa, she trusted her with all her heart, but…
It just seemed off, as Tsukasa suddenly had gone from their usual mix to throwing herself into her studies.
It was fine, Hinata knew this happened with their upcoming tests.
Except there weren’t any tests coming up. Hinata learned from her job, and chatting with classmates and people of all years.
It was concerning, she was worried but didn’t want to upset her…
So Hinata stayed silent, instead slowly letting her anxiety grow as she tried to push it away.
Most seemed to not mention it if it was obvious.
Hinata was really glad that Leo wasn’t most people, as she suddenly heard knocking on her door.
Ritsu hadn’t been here, for once studying (only because of Mao, but hey it was something), so Hinata had the dorm to herself.
Hearing the knocking made her pause, trying to figure out who it could be.
Tsukasa would always text before coming, so that hope was crushed quickly. Yuuta would prefer calling before visiting, and more often than not would just have them meet up somewhere else. Rei never came to the dorm, so… who?
The person had still been knocking, so with a sigh she closed her computer and called out to whoever was there.
“Door’s unlocked, you can come in!” hearing the knocking stop, she took a moment to relax, before hearing it open.
She wasn’t expecting it to be Leo, nor to see Leo’s face so serious.
“...Tsukinaga-senpai?” Hinata sat up, as she walked over and looked down at Hinata.
“Did you and Suo get into a fight?”
What?
“Huh? What do you mean?? I haven’t seen her enough for there to even be time to fight, which I’d really rather avoid!” Leo seemed to relax hearing that, but her expression was still concerned, as she let out an upset groan.
“I didn’t think so but that’s what Sena said it probably was…” Leo dropped down to sit on her knees, arms resting on Hinata’s bed and face buried into them. “I said there’s no way she’d be like this over a fight though having seen how much she hurt after your big one, but I had to ask…”
“Wait wait- can you tell me what’s going on with her?” Hinata asked quickly, as Leo looked up quickly, frowning slightly.
“I would if she’d tell me herself!!” Leo threw her arms up, before faceplanting back into Hinata’s bed. It was strange for Hinata to have to remember this was someone two years older than her, but also explained why Tsukasa didn’t use her last name or senpai…
Hinata only used Ritsu’s first name instead of last name because of the threat she had gotten after calling him by his last name and mentioning his brother.
Leo did turn head to not be muffled, as she looked up at Hinata.
“Anyway, Suo’s been weird, she’s coming back to the dorm later, seemingly having been kicked out of the library… She has like no tests coming up but is cramming like her life depends on it!” Leo sighed, as she started drumming her fingers on the bed again. “I can only hear her practice different languages so much… I should’ve never let her find out I’m fairly fluent in multiple languages!!!”
“Is there nothing she’s doing that might hint at what’s going on..?” Hinata felt guilty asking, but also happy that Leo was willing to trust her with this, even after questioning her on terms of if she had gotten into a fight or not.
“Nothing. She’s good at being sneaky when she wants, which sucks…”
“And she won’t tell you?”
“Everytime I ask she ends up brushing me off!!”
“That’s… weird. She trusts you a lot…”
“I’m- wait she does?” Leo’s eyes lit up a little, before she shook her head. “Still- no she won’t tell me!!”
Hinata sighed, as she found herself trying to figure out what could possibly be going on, and still drawing a blank.
“This is weird…”
“Seriously…” Leo muttered, still frowning. “Sena is this close to grabbing her and interrogating her, which wouldn’t be the first time our group has interrogated each other but still… not the best choice…”
Hinata gave a small smile, stretching before laying back on her bed, careful to not hit Leo.
“Well… let’s just see if in a week or two she sorts it all out, it might just be a little brief period of her cramming for something special?” Hinata’s words seemed to calm Leo, as she nodded and stood up.
“Yeah… you’re probably right! Just remember Hina, Knights has grown to like you a bit aside from you dating Kasa!~”
Hinata paused, smiling softly.
“Really..?”
“Mhm!~ If you’re the princess to Suo, and we’re all knights together, it means it’s our duty to protect you as well!” Leo smiled brightly, ruffling her hair. “Well~ if you ever wanna see the rest of us let us know! See you later!~”
As Leo left, Hinata sighed, throwing an arm over her face.
It’d be fine, right?
Yeah, Tsukasa wouldn’t hide from her if there wasn’t a reason…
But… still… she had to hope that it’d be fine.
Once you’re done with this mess Kasa, please come talk to me… I want to understand your struggles and help you as well…
Until then, I’ll wait for you.
It’ll be fine, I know it.
-----
Hinata couldn’t remember the last time she broke down like this in front of Ritsu.
They had past their half year anniversary of dating, knowing they’d known each other for longer, but Hinata wasn’t exactly sure how long she had been together with Tsukasa.
It didn’t seem to matter, apparently.
The night had been fun, Hinata and Ritsu both watching a dumb tv show they both liked. Hinata had stood up to get a refill of popcorn, and as that was popping, turned to check her phone.
Ritsu had thankfully paused the show so they wouldn’t be competing with the noise from the popcorn, noticing how Hinata’s face had shifted.
Hinata had to reread the two messages from Tsukasa, trying to figure out the hidden joke, so cruelly disguised in those words.
After all, Tsukasa wouldn’t… there’s no way she’d-
She wanted to deny it, but finally it all slotted into place, knowing that this truly was what she meant.
Hinata didn’t even realize the phone had hit the floor before she heard the impact, her brain still reeling.
“Hihi-chan?” Ritsu stood up, as he walked over, pausing as he looked at her phone.
There for display were the messages from Tsukasa.
I’m gonna be away from campus for a few days, so forgive me for not telling you face to face.
But I think we should see other people, sorry for ending it like this.
Ritsu froze once he read those, Hinata could vaguely notice.
She didn’t pay too much attention to his reaction, feeling her knees buckle as she collapsed to the ground, a sob ripping out of her throat.
The microwave deciding to go off felt like a taunt from god, the timer ending at the same time her relationship ended.
Ritsu sounded pissed at that too, stopping the timer before crouching down to Hinata, voice softening.
“Hihi-chan, what do you need..?” Hinata didn’t stop crying, she didn’t think she could in all honesty, but moved a little closer to Ritsu.
A silent request, as Ritsu pulled her into a hug, gently rubbing her back as Hinata sobbed.
It didn’t make sense.
Tsukasa had distanced herself, brushing off Hinata’s attempts to hang out randomly, and then suddenly broke up with her.
Had she done something wrong?
Did I hurt her?
Did she just not like me as I started slipping the mask off?
She’d seemed so happy before this though…
What did I do…
Ritsu paused, grabbing Hinata’s face gently and making her look up.
“Hihi-chan, stop thinking for a moment.” Hinata blinked away a few tears to look a little more clearly into Ritsu’s eyes, reading the concerned expression on his face. “You’re getting that far away look. Don’t think about what you don’t know and try to blame yourself.”
“But-”
“No buts. We don’t know why she did that. So for now, don’t make yourself the asshole.” Hinata was gently picked up, as Ritsu set her on the couch and sat beside her, as he also grabbed a tissue to wipe some of her tears away. “For now, honestly, just let yourself be hurt. Your girlfriend was an asshole and distanced herself, before breaking up with you over text. You’re allowed to cry.”
And Hinata hated how much that got to her, but those simple words…
You’re allowed to cry…
She hated crying, but suddenly felt safer, as she broke down.
It hurt.
Crying this hard hurt.
Tsukasa breaking up with her hurt.
And she was only human, so she sobbed, selfishly taking that comfort from Ritsu, who was so gentle in his comfort and care, but the aggressive typing he was doing as well told a different story.
It told her that at least he had no idea why Tsukasa did this either.
And somehow, that hurt more, as she continued to cry, clinging to Ritsu as he stayed still.
Hinata only realized she had stopped crying when she woke up the next morning, voice sore and still on the couch, Ritsu still having stayed by her.
He was asleep too, and Hinata was used to these moments, as if she ever fell asleep while they were watching something, Ritsu would just throw a blanket over them both and sleep there.
He liked cuddles, and she found herself appreciating that as he woke up.
Ritsu wasn’t as deep a sleeper as he liked to pretend. He was just good at acting, and didn’t want to wake up half the time.
But now, Ritsu was happy to wake up, patting her head.
“Morning, you fell asleep while crying, so don’t make yourself talk yet. Want me to make breakfast? Or should I pick something up?”
Hinata paused, not really in the mood for terrifying looking food, and not wanting that care of being cooked for, so…
“Pick something up..?” Hinata made a face at her throat killing her, as Ritsu nodded, getting off the couch. He got her a bottle of water, before walking over to the door.
“What part of don’t make yourself talk yet did you miss?” Ritsu rolled his eyes, but smiled softly. “I’ll be back in a few, Tsukipi and Secchan might be over soon though, since they seemed pissed.”
Hinata nodded, as Ritsu walked out of the room.
She still hurt, as she stayed cuddled in the blanket and took a sip of the water given to her, as she tried to wake up.
God her head hurt…
She still couldn’t process this… Hinata didn’t understand why Tsukasa would do this.
It felt wrong, but she couldn’t try to problem solve it right now, instead just trying to mend her heart.
She knew everyone left in the end, but she really had hoped they would last longer.
She had never trusted anyone with her heart like that, after all, so having it so cruelly thrown away and crushed.
The door slamming open made jump, as Arashi rushed in, Leo and Izumi running in after.
“Jesus, be a little more gentle!” Izumi scolded, rolling her eyes as Arashi just huffed, before running over to hug Hinata gently. “You’ll wake up the entire floor like that!”
“I don’t really care right now, we’re dealing with the most painful of heartbreaks!” Hinata was a little confused, as Arashi hugged her tighter, letting her snuggle into the other girl's hold.
Leo sighed, patting Izumi’s shoulder before sitting on the other side of Hinata. Izumi walked over to the edge of the couch, leaning against it and gently playing with Leo’s hair.
“I’m so sorry about this Hina-” Leo spoke up, sounding almost guilty, making Leo look over at her, still leaning into Arashi’s hold. “I-I had no idea Suo was… I never thought she’d do this? She was always so happy and excited when it came to you and-”
“Leo-kun, breathe.” Izumi softly cut her off, as Leo relaxed a little and leaned into Izumi’s touch on her head. “Sorry, Leo-kun has been blaming herself since Kuma-kun told us, which she shouldn’t be. It’s no one’s fault except that shitty brat.”
“Sena, she’s not like that and you know it.”
“She shouldn’t have pulled shit like that and you know it.”
Arashi hummed in agreement, gently rubbing Hinata’s sides as she just blinked.
“W-wait, Ritsu-senpai makes sense but… I wasn’t expecting you all to take my side at this moment?” The other three looked over, as Arashi was the first to speak.
“Hinata-chan, after she started distancing from everyone we were all worried, but hearing that she did that, we’d be an asshole to take her side. I don’t want to take either side, since I’d rather talk to her myself to understand, but there’s no denying that you’d be the one hurting…” Arashi gave her a reassuring smile, pulling her a little closer and letting Hinata rest her head against her chest. “You don’t deserve that, no one does…”
Izumi nodded, not sure how to comfort and instead focused on keeping Leo calm, since Leo seemed to have a way with words.
“In addition, don’t forget what I said earlier Hina…” Leo smiled softly, as Hinata couldn’t help but smile softly in return. “We all care about you too. And Rei’s not allowed to come over despite how pissed he is, so someone had to be here for you!”
Hinata found herself laughing softly, as the other three smiled at her relaxing.
“Thank you…” Hinata spoke softly, as Arashi hugged her tighter.
“Of course.” Izumi simply responded, offering a rare, softer smile, as Ritsu opened the door.
“Ah, I see you three did come, good thing I thought to pick up extra food.” Ritsu hummed, walking in and setting the food on the table, draping himself across Leo’s lap, and partly onto Hinata and Arashi’s as well. Leo laughed softly, ruffling Ritsu’s hair.
Hinata found herself able to push aside the pain for a little, smiling at the four of them.
It… it still hurt, hell she was with her ex girlfriend’s friend group, of course it would hurt.
But they still cared, and that made her able to relax for now.
I don’t think I’m ready to see her again though…
But I need to ask her about this… once Tsukasa’s back.
Please… I don’t want us to end like this…
-----
It had been three days, and Hinata quickly realized she wasn’t going to get over this.
Simple things had left her crying, be it someone so simply playing with her hair is a way that reminded her of Tsukasa, certain areas, all the like.
It’s almost funny how Hinata hated crying and yet she cried in front of people more than ever these past few days.
Strangely enough, Hinata found herself at night sneaking back into the abandoned building on campus again, going back to the music room.
Sitting on the piano bench, she sighed softly, propping her phone up with the flashlight on to give her a little light.
As she pressed her fingers against the keys, she saw a few notes be pressed a bit further down, smiling softly.
“You’re still here? I’ve heard people come to visit now after we dug up more of your story…” Hinata saw a few notes pressed in return, humming softly. “I have to say, the people decorating the place with flowers is nice.”
Another soft tune was played, as Hinata paused.
“It’s gonna be hard if you end up playing a song I don’t know the meaning behind, but targeting me with a swansong hurts you know~” Hinata lightly teased, sighing as she started playing the song the ghost started. “I’m not here for that, don’t worry.”
She stayed quiet for a moment, letting them play the song, before the ghost changed the tune.
“...Damn, dead on.” Hinata let out a sad laugh, knowing that tune to be one about heartbreak and endings.
She felt the gust of wind over her hand, vaguely aware that it was a form of comfort like previously with the ghost, as she hummed.
“I don’t… know what caused this. She just ended it off, suddenly… A random message and it was over-” Hinata heard her voice break, hands shaking as she tried to play something, unable to find the tune in mind.
Another gust, seeming to push her hands back a little, as she sighed.
“I’m… sorry. I know, I shouldn’t blame myself… I’ve been told that enough…” Hinata found her hands resting back on the keys, remembering the song they found here and starting to play it.
The ghost easily joined in, letting Hinata take the time to collect her thoughts and words.
She almost felt guilty that the ghost's song left her hurting again, as she realized she had started crying softly while playing.
It just… it reminded her of Tsukasa, since this was one of her happiest moments before they started dating when she played here and Tsukasa fell asleep. It was a loving moment, despite being platonic.
It hurt her, playing this song while in pain, before realizing that truly was the meaning behind it.
Hinata realized this was a song of heartbreak, although for a different reason.
“You lost someone close to you before you chose to write this… didn’t you.”
Hinata could tell the ghost would’ve nodded, before recognizing the tune it played.
The dies irae, also known in music to be the representation of death.
“You loved them, and they died… didn’t they.”
The ghost stopped playing, basically confirming what Hinata had asked, as she sighed softly.
“Is that loss what was the tipping point..?”
Still silent, as Hinata found her hands shaking, shutting her eyes.
“I understand, I’m sorry… I mean… I guess I can’t completely, but I get the loss…” Hinata felt another breeze over her hands, as well as her own tears dropping onto her arm. “I guess… you’re probably thinking I’m lucky, I guess in this case I am… but I just… I don't know what to do. I’ve never trusted someone like this- and she…”
A pause, as Hinata opened her eyes, speaking quietly.
“She shattered that, and yet… I can’t hate her… I still love her.”
Hinata could almost swear she heard a hum in the room, before feeling what felt like a hug wrap around her, sniffling softly.
It didn’t take long for her to realize that it was the ghost trying to comfort her, and this was a hug.
Hinata felt a few more tears fall, trying to get herself to calm down, but also smiled softly.
“Thank you… I just… needed somewhere to relax.”
And quietly, almost as if it was a whistle in the wind, she heard a voice speak softly to her.
“It’s not all lost yet, she is still here. Talk to her.”
Hinata nodded, feeling the breeze wrap around her once before moving back, still hearing the whisper in the air.
“You haven’t lost her. She may have just lost her way. Help guide her back to the path, like she’s done for you.”
Hinata found herself pausing at that, before nodding again.
“Yeah… Thank you. I’ll visit again soon.”
She was only granted the response of a few notes played, before the room seemed to warm up again.
“Picky about talking I see…”
Hinata hummed, picking her phone up and walking out.
I’ll do my best.
I hope they’re right… Please let me help you like you’ve helped me.
Please… don’t leave me.
-----
Hinata hadn’t expected for this to be how her day would go.
She knew Tsukasa was supposed to be returning to campus in the timeframe of 3 days, including today.
She knew this because of Leo, she knew Knights wanted to be the first to talk with Tsukasa, and Hinata agreed.
She knew this, so she knew it both was and wasn’t stupid that somewhere, her heart still hoped to see Tsukasa walk into the coffee shop and take her usual spot, and they could act like it never happened.
Yuuta could tell too, hence why he just set a hand on her shoulder and let Hinata cry once she realized that her hope was never going to happen.
“I’m sorry Aniki… I know.” Yuuta muttered softly, as Hinata kept crying. He comforted her as best he could, but they both knew they still had to do their job. After a few moments, Hinata did move away and wiped her eyes, and with the perfectly practiced smile, went back to work.
Hinata also ran into Rei and Kaoru that day, quite literally, and was just pulled into the tightest hug as she tried her best to not cry anymore.
She really had been crying too much these past few days. Even if it was ok, she didn’t like it.
Rei and Kaoru let her go after a little while, having left her with words of support and care, as she went to her class.
She didn’t really pay attention, she was out of it still. She had a friend lend her notes and she thanked them for that, but that was about it.
Hinata then found herself in the garden, enjoying the peace of the flowers, and shutting her eyes.
The number of times she laid in gardens like this, wishing the flowers would grow over her and let her disappear, was a number Hinata forgot.
She didn’t want that right now. She’d promised to far too many people she wouldn’t let that happen.
But Hinata couldn’t help but wonder how many people were lost under flowers, forgotten by time.
She wondered how many people had been part of the soil that grew such beautiful things, as she held her hand up to the sky.
The amount of tall plants that offered shade, or filtered out the sun, each one had love poured into the growing of them.
And with a sigh, Hinata found herself speaking to no one in particular, aside from the plants and the dirt.
After all, who knows how many people of the past are in this soil… so it’s no different than talking to a ghost.
“I miss her.”
There wasn’t anything that happened, nor did she expect there to be. It was quiet in the garden, the only sounds to be heard were ones she made, or the gentle whispers of mother nature as the wind blew through the leaves.
Hinata remembered the times she was here with Tsukasa. She remembered soft conversations they shared.
She remembered teaching Tsukasa about flower language. The different legends in the garden she knew. The properties of different herbs and flowers.
The conversations about the beauty the plants held, even in wilting. The story about her name and how it could be rearranged to mean sunflower. How Hinata told Tsukasa her favorite flowers were sunflowers.
What Tsukasa’s favorite flower was.
The one Hinata had planted in the garden.
The flower that as Hinata turned her head to look at she couldn’t help but glare at, even as tears pricked her eyes.
Forget-me-nots.
Flowers meant to promise true love, and respect, and a promise to never forget the person you meant them for.
Something Hinata couldn’t help but feel hurt as she stared at it.
True love and respect, something Tsukasa had proven wrong.
She had gotten the part about never forgetting the other right. As Hinata wouldn’t forget Tsukasa.
Hinata wanted to scream at the poor flowers, the one she planted with love and care. Flowers she remembered making sure Tsukasa hadn’t seen until the first one bloomed, that made Tsukasa’s eyes light up with joy.
That had led to her being where she was, cuddling and kissing Tsukasa, giggling.
And when she opened her mouth to speak, aware the only people with her now were mother nature and anyone lost in the soil as she so desired to be in the past.
No one would listen to whatever she’d say, as she spoke with a broken voice.
“I loved her…” she felt her tears hit the ground, as she reached over to gently run a finger over the small petals of the forget-me-nots. “And I love her still…”
She rolled away from looking at the flowers, staring at the clouds in the sky.
She knew mother nature was a fickle mistress, only kind to her favorite children.
Everyone was treated differently depending on how they cared for her and her gifts for all humans.
Hinata had to assume she did something right, or perhaps horribly wrong, as she got a text.
It was from Leo, strangely serious knowing her style of texting.
Hina, she’s refusing to talk, we mentioned you and she ran. Please, get her and get through to her…
Hinata shot up, looking around as Leo added one bit of info.
She’s on the path that leads to the garden, might run past you in a few.
Hinata put her phone away, jumping up and simply climbing the gate, staying perched on top of it as she looked around.
She caught the red hair she was looking for, before they locked eyes.
Tsukasa’s eyes widened, quickly turning down a side path.
Hinata could work with a chase.
Jumping from the gate to the half wall, Hinata went running along that down the path Tsukasa went.
Tsukasa had already been running, so she was much more tired than Hinata. Not to mention that Hinata knew she was gonna win this, being an acrobat.
Easily catching up, Hinata could hear Tsukasa’s breathing wasn’t good, as she called out.
“Tsukasa- you’re not winning this footrace, you know? J-just stop running and we can talk about this.”
Tsukasa didn’t reply, something Hinata wasn’t exactly surprised by. It would be dumb to waste her already short breath.
But Hinata was still gaining, and once close enough tackled the other.
It wasn’t exactly pleasant, the two of them landing on the hard concrete with more force than just a trip, but despite having been twisted in the air to land under Tsukasa, Hinata quickly rolled to flip them, pinning Tsukasa down.
Her head hurt , having cracked into the ground. All of her hurt really.
But Tsukasa was here, and Hinata wasn’t letting go without at least hearing how she felt in person.
Tsukasa was trying to struggle out, as Hinata just sat down on her chest, hands still pinning the others.
“Tsukasa- if you promise you won’t run I can let you go-”
“Mhm, says the person who I saw perched on the gate watching for me-”
“I was texted after you ran from your friend group!” Hinata could see how Tsukasa was still catching her breath, as Hinata bit back tears from just… seeing Tsukasa.
Tsukasa didn’t look ok, now that she was up close. She had makeup to cover up her eyes, but she looked like she had been crying.
Hinata didn’t understand why, but suddenly felt like this wasn’t… as simple as it seemed.
“Fine.” Tsukasa muttered, as Hinata let out a small sigh of relief, letting go and moving to sit beside her.
The pain in her head grew, as she rubbed the back of her head.
No blood, but fuck that hurt.
Tsukasa sat up, not looking up at Hinata.
“What do you want.”
“...You’re smarter than that, Tsukasa.” Hinata muttered, looking at her. “I want to know why… you’re not the type to do that. You’d talk with me if I messed up. And… I never would’ve seen you as the type to break up over text.”
Tsukasa moved to hold her own arms, seeming more… nervous, if anything.
“Why do you care, it’s- over… is it not?”
“Is it..?” Hinata asked quietly, aware of the slight desperation in her voice. “If you truly don’t love me anymore, that’s… fine, but tell me that here. And even if it is over, I don’t want to lose you as a friend either.”
“W-wait, what?” Tsukasa looked over with a small, much more broken look than Hinata expected, blinking a few times.
“If- If this is the end, tell me you don’t love me anymore. That’s… the only way I can be freed of loving you as well…” Hinata felt the tears pricking her eyes, noticing how Tsukasa seemed to be fighting back tears as well.
Hinata saw Tsukasa’s mouth open, before falling shut. She opened it again, seemingly trying to find those words, before looking down with a frown. Hinata noticed that she had started crying, as Hinata tried to decipher what this meant.
She didn’t understand, as she heard Tsukasa finally speak.
“I… can’t say that, when I still do. I’d be lying to not- only you but myself…”
Hinata paused, before feeling those tears in her eyes finally fall. She wasn’t sure if her tone was angry or just pained, but digging her nails into her palms she spoke up.
“T-then why would you do that?!”
“I-I thought if I ended it like that it’d make you hate me-”
“Why would you want to make me hate you?! All- All that did was make me hate myself for whatever I might’ve done to make you leave me!”
“I know- trust me I do I have the angry texts from others to prove-”
“Then why would you?!” Hinata felt her voice break, staring at Tsukasa, and realizing just how defeated the other looked.
Guilty went without thought, but she also looked conflicted, and shattered, and so, so lost.
Quietly, Tsukasa answered.
“I had to.”
“...what-” Hinata bit her tongue, looking at her confused. She didn’t want to get mad, not when she was trying to decipher whatever was going on in Tsukasa’s head.
“I-I had to- my parents found out-” Hinata froze at that, listening intently as Tsukasa continued. “I’m- I’m the heir to the family, so when they found out I was dating another girl they- they got pissed. They made me break up since… I can’t give them an heir if I’m dating a woman…”
Tsukasa had started crying harder, as Hinata hesitated for a moment.
She so rarely saw Tsukasa like this, as she held her hand out.
“Kasa-” Tsukasa’s head shot up at the nickname, as Hinata offered a small, reassuring smile. “Breathe… can I touch you..?”
Tsukasa nodded, as Hinata moved over to hug her, rubbing her back gently. She could feel the other was shaking, as she hummed softly, letting Tsukasa cry.
“Tell me when you’re ready, since I have shit to say of course, but I don’t wanna overwhelm you…”
It wasn’t the most calming of words, but it was what Tsukasa was used to, which helped her relax.
Hinata stayed there for a while, before Tsukasa nodded, signaling it was ok for Hinata to start.
“Well, first off, was it because you had to visit your family you ignored me to study and act like a perfect smart child..?” Tsukasa nodded again, as Hinata hummed, starting to play with her hair. “Alright. Well, secondly, your family is stupid.”
“W-what?” Tsukasa asked, looking up at her, and being met with a small smile.
“They’re stupid. You can still give them an heir if that’s their worry. Pleasantly of ways for lesbian couples to have kids,” Hinata gently brushed Tsukasa’s hair aside from her face. “And if you don’t want a child, they can’t make you. They’re not able to make you.”
“But-”
“No buts, your life is your own.”
Hinata cupped Tsukasa’s face, pressing their foreheads together.
“Don’t live for anyone else. What you want is what you should do. They can always make a new heir.”
Hinata relished seeing Tsukasa laugh a little at the final part, staring into Hinata’s eyes.
“They’ll be furious if I tell them this…”
“They’ll have to cope, you’re an adult now~”
Tsukasa nodded, before looking away for a moment.
With a pause, she looked back into Hinata’s eyes, a determined but nervous look in her eyes.
“I-I know I’ve… really messed things up, but… would I still be so lucky to call you my girlfriend..?” Hinata blinked at her, before giggling.
Tsukasa looked worried, but Hinata simply nuzzled their noses, before nodding.
“You never lost that right, silly.”
Hinata had never, never found kissing Tsukasa to be better, as she closed the distance at Hinata’s words.
Her head didn’t even matter, feeling Tsukasa’s lips again.
I missed this… I love her so much…
-----
It wasn’t even an hour later that Hinata went from hugging Tsukasa’s arm to feeling Tsukasa pulled from her grip, and face to face with a pissed Izumi.
Hinata could see Tsukasa tense, and muffled a giggle.
“...Sena-senpai, good to see you again?”
Izumi didn’t respond, studying her for a moment, with the rest of Knights watching as well, before sighing.
“You’re an idiot. Just talk to people next time.” Was what she muttered, before dropping her hold and stepping back.
Hinata looked a little confused, noticing how Tsukasa was now distracted by Leo tackle hugging her and crying, as Ritsu stepped over to explain.
“Secchan is good at observations, don’t forget. I pointed out that she seemed off since she’d never run, but Secchan there noticed that she had been crying. A lot.” Ritsu hummed, putting a hand on her shoulder. “So, while we’ll grill her for the information in a minute or two, Secchan basically got the final note of it probably being something forgivable.”
“As if Hinata-chan hugging her arm wasn’t enough of a sign~” Arashi giggled, seeing Hinata smile a little.
Looking back, Tsukasa was trying to calm down and also not cry, as Leo was just crying into her.
“L-Leo-san, It’s alright I promise-!” Leo sniffled, looking up at Tsukasa as she wiped away a few tears.
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
“Good…” Leo sighed, before reaching up and pinching Tsukasa’s face, earning a surprised and upset sound. “Then don’t be so stupid next time!!! Just talk to us- we’re used to stupid families! Well, not me, but most of us!!”
Tsukasa just pouted, nodding slightly. Leo smiled, letting go of her cheeks, before stepping back.
“Well, I think that’s enough scolding from me! I mean, we’re pissed and almost agreed to murder you for how sad Hina was, but you also have her family to deal with so!~”
Tsukasa visibly paled at that, but Hinata couldn’t help but smile.
She knew that by family, Leo meant Undead. Yuuta as well, but still.
That was her family, as Knights were Tsukasa’s.
“Oh, Anaja is furious~” Ritsu teased, as Hinata felt Tsukasa move behind Hinata.
“Please don’t let him kill me…”
“I’ll try Kasa!~”
Hinata turned to look at Tsukasa, smiling softly and kissing her nose.
She could deal with Tsukasa’s death threats later, right now she’d enjoy this.
Thank you for coming back to me…
-----
Hinata had nearly forgotten that her head hurt so badly, but somehow after the two of them got back to her dorm she remembered it.
Partly because she had ducked under her table to grab something, hitting the back of it on her way up and crying out in pain, causing Tsukasa to look over.
“Ow ow ow fuck-! ” Hinata sat back down on the ground, as Tsukasa ran to grab an ice pack out of the freezer, holding it to the back of Hinata’s head.
“Why didn’t you remind me your head was already hit on the ground so we could’ve iced it earlier?” Tsukasa looked at her with a concerned glare, as Hinata just pouted.
“I was a little distracted with the fact that you didn’t hate me and still were willing to be with me, despite having to go against your rich parents for that?”
Tsukasa just rolled her eyes, as Hinata moved to help hold the ice as well.
Hinata did shift to cuddle into Tsukasa’s side, delighted once Tsukasa pulled her a little closer. They’d been like this before she knew, but she couldn’t help but be happy they could still do this.
That Tsukasa hadn’t left her for good.
Kissing her forehead, Tsukasa smiled softly at Hinata, before speaking up.
“Do you want to go on a date soon?”
“Huh?”
Hinata’s head had to still be hurting, there’s no way Tsukasa just-
“Friday night, 4 days from now, you don’t have a shift right..?”
Hinata shook her head, brain still catching up with her, as Tsukasa smiled softly.
“Then let me make it up to you, for hurting you like that. There’s a fairly nice place about 10 minutes away, semi-formal, and wonderful food.” Hinata could hear the affection in her voice, as she tried her best to calm her heart enough to figure out a response.
“W-wait, you’re serious about this?”
“Very serious, I want to make sure you know my words are genuine.”
Hinata felt her face heat up, moving to hide her face into Tsukasa’s chest as the other giggled.
“Mmm… you’re unfair. That sounds wonderful, but you’re so unfair.”
Tsukasa simply kissed her head, running her fingers through Hinata’s hair, still holding the ice against the back of it.
“I’ll make reservations in that case, do you want anything else..?”
Hinata shook her head, hugging Tsukasa tighter as her heart threatened to beat out of her chest.
“I love you Kasa…”
“I love you too Hina…”
Tsukasa’s voice was quiet, as she nuzzled into the top of her hair, before whispering.
“And I always will. Till the end of time itself…”
Hinata wasn’t really sure how to respond, instead looking up with a smile.
“Yeah… me too…”
