Lennart stared at his phone to the point he could have burn a hole though it. His hand itch to pick it up and look through the contact list until that one name appear. It has been a week since they last met during the worldwide conference announcement regarding the gate and they have been apart since then. They were both busy with their respective guild in preparation for the upcoming war. Both understanding how dire the situation they were in. The world had been in a huge uproar after Sung Jin Woo announcement and hope were placed on the shoulder of all hunters all over the world. His anxiety became worse and the only person he trusted to make him feel safe wasn't by his side. Lennart hate having to rely on his medicine to manage his mental health issues but he know he needed to keep a facade as the guild leader and representative for German hunter, weakness was never an option. How he long to be by Thomas side even for a short moment.
His mind drifted back to the day of the conference. Soft kisses were exchanged when they finally met again in a secluded hallway, with Thomas looking attractive in a leather jacket pair over with a white t-shirt and jeans, a far difference from his usual choice of beach outwear. His huge arms engulfing Lennart waist as they leaned against each other. They savored the short moment together, soaking in each other scent and body heat and wished for time to stop. Lennart mind was blissfully silent for the first time since their last meeting. This is a side of him that was never shown to the eyes of other but Thomas, as he was the only exception. No words were exchange but their action is enough to convey what they want to said. Lennart wished so badly to spend the night with his lover but he couldn't stay. That night Thomas had a schedule flight back to America. but he didn't leave him broken hearted and yearning, no, he leave a gift for him. A matching pair of engagement ring the color of silver, one with blue stone and one with red stone, the color of their eyes. Thomas has always been a romantic at heart. He promised to keep in contact as soon as he landed, a promise he often broke. For as much as they wish for it, they have duty to their guild and preparation needed to be done for the upcoming war. That night, he stared at the rings encrusted with red stone, the color reminding him so vividly of his lover eyes, until he finally fall into a dreamless slumber.
The ring was absent from Lennart finger at the moment. They haven't make it official and it was not safe to wear it during training. He was afraid of losing it so he kept it in its case in his bedside drawer. He went about his days, doing whatever he needed to do as a guild leader, never neglecting his duties as he pushed his worries to the back of his mind and everyday he counted the hours to the end of the day, his thought never stray away from the awaited messages. But his hope slowly dwindling as days passed by and the ringtone he was hoping to heard of an upcoming message or call from a certain hunter never come about. He told himself he was not disappointed but he know it was a lie.
*
A week passed with no news from Thomas and Lennart had given up on waiting on him like a maiden in distress. Focusing instead on the upcoming war. Hunter Sung Jin Woo have predicted the appearance of the enemy armies through the gate and civilians have been evacuated throughout the entire week. It was a stressful time for Lennart and he barely have time to check his phone anymore, not that he bother doing so. Reminding himself that there was far more important thing needed to be focus on. He had heard that the Canadian civilization and hunter refused to believe hunter Sung Jin Woo and refuse to back down. He thought it was the worse thing they could do but they just wouldn't see reason. The gates have been spotted at various country all over the globes and he was summoned to aid the nearest country. He know he wouldn't be able to see Thomas then maybe not even after. Who know if they will ever survive the war. Those thought bother him for the rest of the day.
That night Lennart paced restlessly around his bedroom. The clock by his bedside showing it was past midnight and he should have gone to bed hours ago but he could not sleep. The bed feel to big and excessively warm as he tossed and turned, struggling to sleep but unable to keep his eyes closed while his mind replay the current situation, triggering his mind into a what if spiral. He gave up sleeping, instead deciding to read some book but soon realized he couldn't concentrate on the words and gave up reading. He picked at his phone, wondering if he should initiated the call instead. A part of him know how busy he was but a dark part of him thought that Thomas is just playing around with him, that the ring mean nothing. Lennart squashed the doubt away as soon as it appear.
Grabbing his phone, he took a seat at the balcony. Scrolling trough his contact until his name appeared. Thomas picture staring back at him as his fingers hover over the call button. He missed seeing his endearingly smirking and stupid smile that used to make Lennart want to punch his face to knock him off his cockiness. He had heard that Thomas guild will be located in Canada to help assist the hunter there. The German hunter will be relocated to one of the place where the gate is spot. There's zero chance for a brief meet up for them to said what they want to said before the final war. If there's even hope for tomorrow after the war. Lennart decided as his finger pressed the call button, he didn't want to die with regret.
"Lennart?!" The call was picked right away, startling him that he almost dropped his phone. "What? It's past midnight there right? Why aren't you asleep yet? Are you having nightmare again? Do you want me to switch to video call? Are you okay? Do you want me to -"
"Thomas," Lennart cut him off before he could ramble on. "I'm okay. I just want to hear your voice. It's been a week since we last get to even talked with each other and I really miss you,"
"I miss you too, I'm sorry I forgotten to keep in contact with you, the current situation have been keeping me busy and there upcoming war... Never mind about that, how are you doing?" He noticed that Thomas switched the topic as to not overwhelm him.
"Busy, just like you and when are you going to ask me out on a proper date?" He dropped the question casually and wait for Thomas reaction.
The line was silent for a while, "What? How do you know?" As realization dawned, he cursed. "Did Isolde told you that? I told her to keep it a secret! God, I know asking her is a bad idea. Of course she told you"
Lennart younger sister, Isolde had told him that Thomas was planning on taking him out on a date. Although she never said when and with the upcoming war, he didn't think they could find a time to go on a date.
"So... it's true?" He traced his fingers, empty of their engagement ring as Thomas murmured a yes in sulking tone. He was probably going to call Isolde after this to tell her off for ruining his surprise to asked Lennart out on a date.
"I want to take you out on a proper date after the war end. Once everything have been resolve and the world isn't in danger. Where we can be just us, far from the public eyes. Some where we can be ourselves," Lennart breath hitched at the tenderness in Thomas voice as be describe the date plan.
"Thomas, can you promise me something?"
"Anything for you,"
Don't break this promised please, he silently plead in his heart.
"Promise me. Promise me you'll ask me out again once this thing is over. Promise me you'll come find me and ask me out properly." For a moment Lennart feel like his request is too childish but Thomas replied warmed him heart.
"I promise," His voice was firm as he said it without hesitation. "I promise I'll come find you and and ask you out on a proper date,"
Heart beating fast, he could feel his hand sweating and the burning on his ears was enough to let him know how nervous he feel, but he want to get the words out before cowardice pulled him down to the point of regret. His heart was overflowing with emotions for he realized he didn't want to end their last call like this. Not without confessing his true feeling.
Without future ado, he confessed, "I love you,"
"And I you, my beloved,"
