Work Text:
Wally walks out of Howdy's Place and waves goodbye to Barnaby before turning his heel to walk back home. Today was a perfect sunny day, just like most days here in Home. He basks in the sun's warmth, smiling contentedly and humming mindlessly as he looks around to admire the neighborhood.
He suddenly stops in his tracks when he spots you under a tree, snoozing away on the casted shadow. Curious like a cat, he approached you and watched your form, the only time he had the chance to not look up at you.
He never quite understands how one sleeps, or why would anyone ever want to sleep. There's so many things to see and so much to do besides wasting the time away. He doesn't sleep, so he will never fully comprehend it.
One thing Wally thought of about it was that you looked peaceful. Judging by the way you snore softly, your face lax and your chest slowly rising up and down.. sleeping must be very calming, he assumes in his mind. Like quietly enjoying music.
Then an idea popped up in his head. Wally sat down on the ground next to you, careful not to disturb you, and brushed away the leaves from behind his spot. After doing so, he falls on his back, resulting in a soft thud sound coming from the grass.
He glanced at you briefly, as if confirming that this is how sleeping is done. He shifts on his spot to be comfortably snug against the grass then places both of his hands on top of his torso. He closed his eyes next and began his quiet mantra, "I'm sleeping, I'm sleeping, I'm sleeping..."
After a short while, you stirred awake and heard someone talking from beside you. You turn your head to see Wally "sleeping". You suppress a laugh that threatens to come out of your lips by smiling widely.
Wally still heard your huff, though. He blinks awake and looks at you with genuine surprise on his face. Then he smiled and greeted you, his voice slow and calming, "Hello, you're awake."
"Hello, Wally." You greeted back and sat up, the other followed suit and you dust off the leaves that have fallen on you. You look back at your best friend and notice a leaf on his blue hair, you reach up and pick it off.
Wally stared at you for a few seconds, trying to form words on what to say, then finally asking, "Do you enjoy sleeping?"
"I do." You reply politely then you grinned. Teasingly, you added, "Was it obvious? Did I snore too much?"
"Only a little." Wally answered honestly, straightforward like he always is which made you laugh slightly.
"Why'd you join me? You don't even sleep." You questioned him next. Although you don't mind his company, you're simply curious about his reasons.
"Since you enjoy sleeping, I want to enjoy it with you too." Wally replied and followed it up with a wide smile. "I think it's nice to enjoy things together with friends."
You shouldn't be surprised anymore when warmth blooms in your chest and your lips stretch into a wide smile just like his upon hearing his tender-hearted explanation. This is Wally, someone who never fails to show his love to others, to his friends and especially to you, his best friend.
There's no one else like Wally.
"It is nice to have some company." You then say to him. "Thank you for joining me."
"You're welcome." He replied and brightened up even more.
