Travel had become second nature to Miles Edgeworth, after all, he’d barely stopped moving around his entire life.
Yet, moments such as these proved themselves to be a challenge, the prosecutor found that perhaps traveling could be stressful.
“Daddy it’s so loud!”
“I know kiddo, just sit back down and we’ll be there soon.”
Miles looked over to see the Wrights sitting beside him, he’d invited Trucy and Phoenix to Japan for some vacation from the watchful eye of Kristoph Gavin and he was beginning to regret his decision.
Not that he minded the extra noise, he just worried about poor 9-year-old Trucy who had never ridden a bullet train in her life.
Trucy was going through an anxious phase where it seemed everything was much too loud and stressful and frankly, he didn’t blame her. The young magician had gone through so much in the past year, so had her adoptive father.
“Hey Miles, can you hand me her headphones?” Phoenix tapped him on the shoulder, wincing slightly.
“Certainly.” He nodded, passing the expensive noise canceling headphones he had purchased with Trucy in mind over to Wright. He sighed in relief when Trucy flashed him a big smile and settled into her seat quietly.
“Phew, I’m so sorry Miles I didn’t mean for this to be such a big deal. I didn’t know the damn train was going to be this bumpy and loud and-“
The prosecutor stopped him by resting a comforting hand on his shoulder.
“Phoenix, I promise it’s alright. The girl has gone through many troubles recently and she deserves to be upset about them. As her father I want you to relax, this trip is my treat and I would be upset if you didn’t take the time to enjoy it. Trucy is better now, please have some fun.”
“I love you.” The former defense attorney cooed, pressing a kiss to Edgeworth’s forehead. It was enough to get the man flustered to all hell.
They had done this dance for years now but it had started to become real as of recently. The lingering touches, the kisses on the cheek, the quiet evenings spent nestled in bed, saying “I love you”.
When Phoenix had first confessed to loving him he’d taken it as a joke, how in the world could a man he’d sought after his whole life really feel the same way?
However, as time went on he got used to the affection and settled into a routine. Once Phoenix got disbarred it all came crashing down, Trucy became apart of his life so quickly he barely had time to look after himself. Miles often took the girl on outings to help Phoenix get himself back together at home. It soon became hard to separate himself from the Wrights as he had integrated into their life to the upmost degree. Trucy was like a daughter to him.
Hence why Miles had invited them to Japan. It was one of his favorite places to visit and he wanted to share the experience with whom he considered family.
And at the end of the trip, he’d finally muster up the courage to ask them. To ask them to be in his life permanently.
“Miles, want to share with me?”
He quickly looked over at Phoenix who was holding up an extra pair of chopsticks for his bento box he’d picked up at the train station.
“Are you certain? I wouldn’t want to leave you without a meal.” The prosecutor shook his head. His best friend smiled.
“Of course! Please have some, you paid for it remember?” Before Miles could argue that he’d paid for the box for Phoenix, he gave up and accepted the chopsticks.
The two ate the smoked salmon and rice in a comfortable silence as the speeding train pulled into Kyoto Station with ease.
“Trucy baby we’re here.” Her father whispered, gently lifting up her headphones.
“Oh? Yay! Finally!” The girl shrieked with a sudden excitement, rushing to exit the train car.
The two men followed closely behind the young magician, laughing at her antics.
The open air station felt refreshing after hours of being stuck inside. After Phoenix had collected their luggage the three of them made their way past the gates and into the underground subway station to their hotel.
“Uncle Miles! Look how cute!” Trucy made a small detour to point out a little waving statue of a cat they were selling.
“Those actually have a name, the Maneki-neko or beckoning cat in English. If the right paw is up it means to bring good fortune and if the left is up it means bringing people or customers into businesses. Although it could be used for bringing family into a home as well.” The prosecutor answered thoughtfully, examining the small cat in his hands.
“May I get one for Daddy please?” She whispered. Miles nodded and purchased the one she had pointed out in the first place, unbeknownst to Phoenix who was standing outside the shop.
The three of them continued through the station and eventually arrived at their hotel after a short subway ride. While Miles was rechecking the direction of the lobby Trucy decided to jump off of the small steps leading down to the sidewalk.
“Daddy look! I’m going do a biggg jump!” She announced proudly, readying herself.
“Truce please don-“
“OWWWWWWWW!!!”
Miles hurriedly pocketed his phone to tend to the young girl who was now wailing on the ground.
“Are you alright? What hurts?”
“My ankleeee-“ she cried.
“Nothing seems to be broken but I better carry you into our hotel just to be safe.” Miles sighed in relief, scooping up the magician in his arms.
“Miles you don’t have to carry her, really.” Phoenix winced, feeling sorry for his friend.
“Are you implying I haven’t the strength, you have been sorely mistaken dear Wright.” He jested, leading the way to their hotel room.
Once Trucy had been laid down on her bed to rest the two men sat on the edge of theirs.
“Geez, I’m sorry this day has been a bust. I didn’t expect Truce to be so stressed out and twist her ankle trying to show off.” Phoenix groaned, patting Miles on the back sympathetically.
“Nonsense, I’ve had a lovely day. Any time spent with my family is time well spen- I mean, your family of course.” He quickly corrected.
“Objection, you are my family.” Phoenix smiled, eyes beginning to grow misty. “I’ve been wanting to tell you that but I was terrified you’d be upset with me. Guess I was all worried for nothing!”
“Must you beat me at everything!” Miles laughed, wrapping his arms around his closest friend. “I love you Phoenix..”
“Y-you haven’t said it back before..”
“I feel like it’s finally the right time.”
It was the former defense attorney’s turn to start laughing, squeezing his partner tightly back.
“Can you guys stop being all mushy, I’m sleepy” Trucy suddenly groaned from her bed, pulling her pillow over her head to block the noise.
“Sorry sweet pea.” Phoenix whispered, kissing Miles on the cheek. “We should get to bed ourselves anyways.”
“You should, night Daddy, night Papa.” Trucy mumbled, barely audible.
“Did she just?” Miles covered his mouth in shock. His partner nodding, grinning widely.
“Welcome to the Wright family dear.”
