Work Text:

Across the field, the sun transforms from something white-hot and all-seeing to something fiery and effervescent, bubbling its way down the sky towards the horizon. Taehyung says the reason the sun seems to slip out of view so quickly at the end of every day is because it hates goodbyes; that if it were to stick around long enough to say a proper farewell it'd be too sad to ever leave again, and we'd be stuck forever in eternal day time.

Jimin almost feels like they're from two different worlds when Taehyung says things like that, like Taehyung is seeing everything in multi-colour while Jimin is stuck in monochrome. In Jimin’s eyes, a sunset is just a sunset. It’s just the end of another day. But to Taehyung, it's not just a sunset. It’s never just a sunset. It's a story. It’s the sun not liking goodbyes and never wanting to have to say them.

Taehyung says that the sun and the moon are in love but are cursed never to be able to touch each other. That’s why the sun shines so brightly; because it wants to be able to touch the moon, even if the only way it’ll ever be able to do that with its light. And the moon - touched so deeply by the sun's gift - wears that light across its surface like an armour every night, showing it off to anyone who'll look.

Ripping up grass from the soil, Taehyung says "The moon always shines, Jimin. Even when we can't see it. Even when it's hidden by the clouds. It never stops shining."

Jimin doesn’t say the words 'the moon doesn't shine, it reflects' because Taehyung doesn't care for being scientifically correct. Jimin thinks he doesn't either, because he much prefers Taehyung's tales about how the moon's orbit is a never ending dance it does for the sun than whether or not that's scientifically correct. He never even liked science, anyway. But he does like Taehyung; likes the way he never seems to stop smiling and the way he always has a story tucked under his tongue.

Across the field, the sun disappears behind some buildings in the distance and Taehyung huffs because 'I only looked away for two seconds and I missed it'. A pout makes its way onto his face, etching his features with immeasurable disappointment and sadness, before it transforms into a brilliant smile when he stares up into the tree they're sitting under.

"Look, Jiminie; the leaves are shivering."

Above their heads the leaves rustle in the chilling wind. It had been a warm day, but the departure of the sun had left their little piece of world a colder place. Taehyung is wearing a t-shirt, Jimin only a vest.

"It's starting to get cold; maybe we should leave."

"Soon." Taehyung promises, not taking his gaze away from the fluttering leaves. His eyes are wide like this is first time he's seen the way a tree behaves in the wind and it's the most wonderful thing he's ever seen, but Taehyung has a habit of acting like everything that happens to him is the first time. Everything involving Taehyung is always so intense. He eats every meal like that of a man who'd been starved for his whole life. Every time he skinned his knees when they were younger, he'd laugh under his watery eyes and say 'wow, look how much blood there is!'. Every time he cries it’s like he’s mourning every tear he sheds. And every time he kisses Jimin, it’s like they might never see each other again.

With Taehyung, every dawn is his first and every sunset is his last. Jimin often feels like the world Taehyung lives in is a million miles from his own; where grey buildings are about the lives of every worker inside. Where a tree stump is about a bird who lost her nest when that tree was cut down. Where it’s never about yesterdays but always about tomorrows. And that's why Jimin needs Taehyung in his life. Because although it may feel like they're a million miles apart, Taehyung has a way of holding onto Jimin’s hand and pulling him into that world with him; a world that is vibrant and quivering, where every emotion is welcomed with open arms, no matter how negative, because emotions are what make you who you are, Jiminie, they let you know that you're alive. And Jimin wants so desperately to be alive.

Taehyung drops his head onto Jimin's thigh as Jimin stares out across the field. The sky is alive with Tiffany blues and safety oranges. The grass is green. The leaves shiver in the wind. And Jimin is in love with a boy who is too in love with the world to notice.
