Work Text:
Jimmy wandered into the beautiful ice castle, knocking on the open door to let the king know of his presence. The hall was draped in light blue and yellow with purplish undertones, and it really was breathtaking.
“Scott?” The cod hybrid yelled down the empty hallway, pushing open doors and shouting again. “Scott! I need you!”
Silence. Only his own footsteps echoed through the icy cold walls and the whisper of the wind.
They had reached an alliance, and Jimmy needed help building some new houses and huts, and he assumed Scott would help him. For an iou or something, or to be kind as neighbors and alliancees, if that was even a word.
He continued down the hallway, admiring tapestries and intricate designs etched into the walls. A slightly ajar door caught his attention, and he peeked inside.
Papers were littered about the desk, and knowing Scott he’d surely write something about where he was off to or at least it’d provide some hints. Jimmy had a feeling the deer hybrid was here last, and he followed his intuition.
He picked up a scroll, skimming over it and setting it down. It was a list of relations between the other Empires, and Jimmy was seemingly at the top. Don’t get him wrong he was flattered, but above so many others which he was sure Scott had a better relationship with? Odd, to say the least.
He glanced around the mess of papers, his own name on one catching his attention. He skimmed from the top, which seemingly described all his good qualities. And then he read something he couldn’t believe.
‘Can I trust you not to tell a soul? I love him. A lot. '
Jimmy doubled back. He blinked, and tried reading it differently.
A friend? As a friend, right? He meant he loved me like a friend, I mean we went on a date by his suggestion but it was a joke, he meant it as a joke, we’re allies! Allies, allies, and he read on.
‘He makes me feel like I’m the most alive I’ve been. He makes me feel complete. I wish he loved me back. Maybe he does. I don’t think anyone would love me.’
No no no no, it’s- no, someone will love him- Scott’s a great person, he’s funny, beautiful- but by dear void no not him-
He almost wanted to throw the paper across the room and forget he ever saw it. Leave and go have his memory wiped so everything wouldn’t be so weird. Void- he hated his own curiosity.
Despite this, he read on.
‘I wish I could spend every second with him, maybe alone in a quiet place, professing my love for him and him pulling me in for- void, I’m rambling now aren’t I? You never wanted to hear all of this.’
He felt cruel for thinking it but he felt disgusted. Why? They were friends. Nothing more- Why would Scott think of him this way?
He wished he never went looking. He wished he never even bothered for his help. He gently set the scrolls down in what he hoped were their original places, and ran out of the study.
Why? He paid no mind to the wind or the intricate tapestries and walls, the glimmer of the lanterns or the blue-haired figure further down the hallway. He only wanted out of this palace.
“Jimmy!” Scott smiled, eyes lighting up and everything was painted in a new light. He never smiled like that for anyone. He never dressed up like that for their date and he swore he hesitated once during that voidforsaken date to putting his on Jimmy’s and he might be looking too far into it but-
“Hey,” He trailed, trying to avoid eye contact with him. Scott couldn’t look anywhere else. Seemingly inspecting his features and still cheery.
“I’m glad to see you! Why are you here? Did you come to see me?” His tone was hopeful and Jimmy felt horrible, he wanted out.
“I came to ask for a favor, but uhm, I have places to be.” He awkwardly smiled back, hoping he didn’t seem too suspicious.
“Well if you need anything let me know, Rivendell is always open to allies.”
Jimmy nodded, and almost bound down the hallway. He hoped Scott didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary.
It was going to take some getting used to, but he needed a way to let him down easily.
