Reality Check

Summary:

His quirk is indeed fitting for hero work...but is he suited to it? A lack of dedication, discipline but most of all his insistence that he is being judged because of his quirk and getting screwed over, ends up yanking Shinsou's head out of the clouds and brutally back down to Earth
My take on Shinsou in fanon. Can be considered OC but I don't think so.

He could finally start realizing his dream and show all those bastards who said he couldn’t. He couldn’t wait to see their reactions when they saw he of all people had made it into the hero course while they couldn’t. Those smug –

*Thud* *Thud* *Thud*

Ok what the fuck?! He groaned staring at the ceiling with dry eyes. He really needed his sleep…he’d gone to bed rather late last night while browsing memes so he was particularly irritable at the moment. Also, who the fuck is this active at six-thirty in the morning?

Right…his new classmates. He had made it clear when he walked in that he wasn’t interested in making friends. Much to his surprise everyone actually left him alone…he should have been happy but it irritated him. It reminded him off middle school where people wouldn’t ever want to hang out with him. Ok sure they acted all nice, but Shinsou saw through their act. They were just waiting to stab in the back no doubt…they all judged him because of his ‘villainous’ quirk. He wouldn’t give them the chances to screw him over, he was already onto them.

For now, he needed some more sleep.

Unfortunately, after what felt like a literal minute, he was startled awake by loud banging on his door, “Shinsou-kun are you alright?! It is already eight fifteen, we must be in class in fifteen minutes but as respectable students we must arrive early! Please come down immediately, we have saved you breakfast! We will be waiting for your downstairs!”

What was his face again? Iida or something - he was related to Ingenuim, was fucking loud and much to his misfortune was the vice rep. Unlike any other normal human being he took it way too seriously making him about the most annoying person on the world. Of course, this was more so because it was too damn early and he was so damn loud.

Groaning he sat up and fished his phone out. Bleary eyed he scrolled through his email before checking out the forums he usually visited. He wasn’t particularly paying attention but he liked to give himself time to wake up. He wondered what time it was…

His eyes snapped open seeing it was 8:23 am. He was going to be late on his first day as a hero course student.

Fuck!

There was no warm water left in the showers and he was late as is, so he didn’t get to have breakfast either. Gen ed classes started at nine so he was used to waking up a little later and taking his time getting to school. He was doing his best to rush to classes but it was too early for him. So, he half-jogged, half-dragged himself which left him out of breath and sweating right before his first class. Not to mention ten minutes late…

He peaked inside and noticed Midnight’s focus entirely on the whiteboard. He tried to sneak in but he froze when she called him out, “Shinsou-kun, you’re late”

He was rooted in spot as she turned to him with an expectant look, “Sorry…I overslept”

She studied him for a moment which made him want the ground to swallow him before nodding, “Alright I’ll let it slide this time. Don’t make it a habit, ok?”

He nodded before slipping to his desk quietly. He wanted just a moment to collect himself…he was half tempted to try and grab some shut eye but he didn’t want to push his luck. Midnight was one of the stricter teachers so he really didn’t want to give her a reason to punish him on his first day especially when she’d let him off easy. He pulled his notebook out and was ready to start taking notes…except he was so lost. He started at the page tiredly unable to bring himself to start writing. He really didn’t want to be here right now.

From the corner of his eye, he noticed Yaoyorozu looking at him like she was about to say something. But she shook her head and turned her attention back to the board. He grit his teeth in annoyance at that. Naturally she’d act different with him because of his quirk. In his tired state he muttered under his breath, “Judgmental bitch”

Two seconds later he was met with a fierce glare from Jirou who sat in front of their class president. Shouji also looked at him with a flat expression. He was startled and promptly pretended not to see it. Crap - he needed to remember couple of them had enhanced hearing and could hear him say stuff under his breath.

Whatever…they were biased against him because of his quirk already. It was really no skin of his back - let them hear him. It’d just be easier to provoke them in the future which meant he’d always have the advantage over them. He wasn’t here to make friends, he was here to prove to everyone he could be a hero. His mind drifted as the lessons continued.

By lunch Shinsou had a terrible headache. He hadn’t been in the mood for classes whatsoever so he was rather caught off guard by the pace of them. They covered material almost twice or thrice the pace they did in gen ed. It was just the first day and he was already behind by quite a lot…not a big deal though he had plenty of time before the term exams. He’d always had the best grades throughout his schooling, he wasn’t worried in the slightest.

He sat away from the hero course students because he honestly could not stand them. He was silently glad they hadn’t asked him either like he expected. They were so loud and acted like they were better than everyone. He scowled watching one person in particular - Midoriya Izuku had just irritated him beyond belief from the start. He acted all nice and friendly, but he had basically everything handed to him on a silver platter. Super powerful quirk, popularity, great grades, friends and a girlfriend. Bastard didn’t know what it was like to work hard - probably skated by his whole life while he had to struggle so much. Todoroki, Bakugou, Iida and Yaoyorozu were also good examples of that but Midoriya stood on top of the people he resented the most. UA’s damned golden boy.

“Yo Shinsou!”

He groaned realizing it was his old classmates from gen ed. They were ok…but they had been really annoying since he got into the hero course. Always asking him about how it was going and what he thought of his classmates – uggh!

But it was more so because he couldn’t respect any of them. Their goals were so…boring. Accountants, scientists, doctors, engineers? Did they have no aspirations at all? What pissed him off more was that several of them had incredibly powerful quirks which would have let them thrive in the hero course yet they opted for gen ed. He just…he couldn’t get caught in that mentality. He had to move forward to be a hero and he couldn’t have them weighing him down.

They would become distractions from heroism - he needed to focus everything he had on it. He remained silent the entire time just giving short responses and focusing entirely on his food which he absently picked at.

“Shinsou everything good?”

“Yeah” he replied stoically, “Why?”

“Just…are you ok?”

“Just tired I guess” he shrugged indifferently.

Kazehara sighed, “Let him be guys. We’ll see you later Shinsou-kun”

Finally, they left him alone…but Shinsou’s mind was more focused on what was coming after lunch. It was finally time for hero classes and he was going to show everyone what he was made of. This was what it was all about! He’d prove to them that the so-called ‘villain’ had the most potential out of them. Aizawa had prepared him well, so he was confident he’d ace it.

If only he knew.

“Come on young Shinsou! We just got started!”

If not for the fact that his lungs were grasping for every single inch of oxygen he could find, he would have shot back a snappy reply. He found All Might particularly grating because he was focusing on him more.

Fucking physical training?! He wasn’t particularly opposed to it, even if he would have preferred to skip it but All Might’s training was insane! There was no way a normal person could possibly do this. Shinsou felt like his limbs were going to fall out in the first two minutes itself. Just continuous exercise with no break at all! Apparently that’s all they did every Monday.

He glared up at his classmates who were all running around with ease. Iida and Midoriya were running around like a bunch of idiots…of course this whole thing was biased against him because he didn’t have a physical based quirk. Just like the entrance exam all over again.

All Might walked over to him and helped him up, “Come on kiddo. You’ve got to do a lot better than this. Let’s see that Plus Ultra attitude”

He scowled once he moved away. Instead of working hard, he’d work smart…he’d walk around and take it easy but the minute All Might looked his way he’d start running. It’s not like torturing his body would do any good…he’d do the amount of physical exercise he thought was necessary. Practicing using his quirk was what would really help him. But he didn’t have much mental power to think about it now…

When the session finally came to an end All Might pulled him aside much to his frustration, “Young man physical fitness is critical for a hero. You’ve started late so it’s understandable you’re behind but you have much to catch up” he held out a sheet to him, “I’ve created a training program for you which should help you. It will be rather intense, but if you are dedicated it’ll help you go a long way”

He resisted the urge to roll his eyes, “Thank you sir. May I leave now?”

He was silent for a moment, “I urge you to take this seriously. This is for your benefit young Shinsou”

“If you say so sir”

He sighed, “Very well. Have a good day young man”

He didn’t bother responding.

He was tired, angry and needed sleep. Aizawa hadn’t been available so his practice with the binding cloth hadn’t gone great. He tried pulling off some of the moves he’d seen him use but to no avail. So, after practicing for twenty minutes, he figured he’d hit the arcade for the evening just to kill time. Eventually he did have to go back to the dorms which he was dreading.

Of course, the second he got back to the dorms his classmates had to bug him. Hagakure came bounding up to him, “Hey Shinsou-kun you want to join us for some board games?”

He scoffed, “Not interested. I’ve got better things to do”

“Aww come on” she pouted, “You’re always ditching us and holing up in your room. Come have some fun for once!”

“I need sleep. Just go away” he grunted. Couldn’t she take a hint?

“Fine” she conceded defeated but bounced away immediately. Yeah right! Faker through and through, wanting to act all friendly probably to screw him over in some twisted prank to make herself look good. She was basically useless after all, how on Earth did she get into the hero course with a quirk like that? Probably should save herself the embarrassment and just drop out.

Once he reached his room, he promptly threw the sheet All Might gave him in the trash. He wasn’t even going to bother checking it. He probably made it for some kid with a power quirk like Midoriya without realizing. He didn’t even offer to help him train, just told him to do the exercises. What kind of teaching was that? No wonder Aizawa seemed to hate him so much!

He was pretty stressed out right now…he pulled his laptop out deciding to try out that new MMORPG. Let’s see now…

“Drop the health potion”

“Two tiles to your north. Hold off or it’s going to reset”

“Nah we got twenty ticks to kill the second pillar. Finish the first one off”

“Gotcha. Repot antidotes before Haizer”

“Potshare the-“ he was cut off by loud banging on his door making him growl. Oh great, now what?! He didn’t quite know why he was so agitated, but he was in the middle of something and of course they had to choose to annoy him now. Knowing they won’t leave soon he groaned, “AFK sorry”

He ignored the shouts of annoyance from his mic as he marched up to the door and pulled it open, “What?!” he snapped at Iida.

“It is almost nine. Are you not going to have dinner?” he asked raising an eyebrow.

“I’ll have it whenever I want” he bit back.

“I’m merely concerned as a classmate should be. Eating at an appropriate…“ his eyes glazed over as his quirk took hold of him.

Leave and don’t come back” he ordered. He watched as the prick walked away finally leaving him alone. He slammed the door shut and let out a deep sigh. Ok he may have overreacted a little…but it wasn’t completely unwarranted in his eyes. The guy should have gotten the message ages ago. Always annoying him and acting like he was worried about his wellbeing. As if! It was just an ego trip for the guy to around telling people how to act. He wasn’t putting up with that shit.

Shaking his head he returned to his PC, “Sorry, idiot classmates”

“We get it man. Boss just started, grab more pots and head in”

“Yeah. On my way”

He rubbed his eyes feeling particularly drowsy. He’d been up till almost three am having gotten really into the new raiding dungeon. He’d made some serious upgrades to his account and he was probably going to try and max out his setup for the raid. That and the arcade had been the highlights this week.

Oh well…now onto morning classes then hero training. Aizawa would be taking it today so it’d be actual hero training and not a giant waste of time like with All Might. He was quite sure he had woken up slightly late but he had set an alarm…shouldn’t Iida be here banging on his door?

Oh, right last night…he probably finally got the message which was a relief. He glanced at the clock wanting to know how much time he had to browse memes. His heart sank seeing the time.

8:32 am

Fuck!

Ectoplasm hadn’t been as nice about him being late as Midnight and gave him detention in the evening which was annoying as hell. It’d cut into his gaming time…morning classes had been miserable because he was exhausted and he couldn’t get behind the speed they were going at.

Whatever, he had plenty of time to catch up, it wasn’t a huge deal.

Lunch was better because he didn’t get pestered by his old classmates. This time he found himself glowering at Todoroki who was sitting right next to Yaoyorozu. Son of Endeavour, dual quirk user, looks, deep pockets and a loyal following of fangirls. The sick part was that he was dating Jirou yet he was all chummy with Yaoyorozu. Spoilt brat lived such a blessed life but everyone was so quick to make excuses for him not knowing things. Probably doing it for attention anyways…

They weren’t worth wasting his breath on. With actual hero training around the corner, he was raring to go. This was it! What he’d been waiting for all this time – a chance to prove himself. He couldn’t wait to stand in front of his classmates and rub in their smug faces.

This was going to be great.

This sucked…

He had been hyped at first…but hero training had been so boring! He hadn’t even gotten to use his quirk. It was rescue training which was stupid as hell. Anyone with two braincells could do this - it really wasn’t worth investing his effort into something that wouldn’t benefit him. Not to mention he was more than a little peeved how yet again it favoured people with physical quirks…

His mind drifted back to his plans for the evening. He wanted to grind the raid a bit more for some upgrades to his account. He’d been really enjoying the game and it helped a ton getting him to unwind after a long stressful day. He shouldn’t be surprised that the hero course was like this…he felt like he didn’t have a minute to kick back at all. Wake up, classes, hero training – it was quite a bit. Gen ed had been a breeze in comparison.

Might as well take it easy now. Work smart not hard – he’d invest his effort in places worth his time. This? This wasn’t worth it. He didn’t need his full focus for these exercises, he could relax. Honestly his classmates were so cringe acting like this was a real operation – they were high school students for heavens sake not actual heroes. For some of them it was just a way to compensate for the fact that they were incompetent and really shouldn’t be in the hero course.

Unfortunately, with his attention diverted the rope he’d been holding onto slipped from his grasp. His eyes widened as he tried to grab back onto it but for some reason it suddenly felt like it was being tugged by a truck – at least for him. He was about to stumble forward but the rope was pulled backwards, “You ok dude?” Satou asked concerned as he hefted the rope with effort.

He grit his teeth, “Go away!”. Yet another reminder of the fact that this favoured people with physical quirks. Now this guy had to come interfere…he didn’t want to disappoint Aizawa, so he felt a lot of embarrassment at the fact that he was helping him.

“Don’t be like that. You’re new in the hero course so –“ his eyes glazed over.

Go away!” Shinsou snapped using his quirk.

Unfortunately, this meant that he let go off the rope and began to walk away. Shinsou pitched forward into the water headfirst as it reeled making a whishing sound as it flew through the air. He was pulled under the surface and it was freezing, which shocked him awake. He rose to the surface gasping for air. He heard shouts and loud creaking. He stared forward watching as the massive ship plunged into the water spraying him with the chilly water.

Fuck!

“Satou detention for losing focus”

“Sensei wait, I think-“ he was cut off when he glared at him with his quirk.

“No excuses. You messed up, you suffer the consequences. Will you make the same excuses in the middle of an actual rescue mission?”

He paled and ducked his head, “No sensei”

Shinsou couldn’t help but smirk under his bandages. He hadn’t intended to but he’d take any chances to knock these hero brats down a peg. He would have preferred if it was one of the so-called Monster Three but he’d take his chances where he could.

He noticed his classmates giving him distrusting looks and whispering between themselves. He was in half a mind to openly confront them…but he just let it be. They were biased against him as is, he didn’t care what they said or thought.

Their whole operation had fallen apart so they were looking for a scapegoat. Naturally they’d pick him. Aizawa had punished Satou and kept everyone else silent, which made him feel an unimaginable thrill. Finally, the tables were turning and the brats with ‘heroic’ quirks were being punished and put in their place. It was a good feeling.

Imagining his pro hero license in hand, rubbing it in their faces was a sweet feeling that could keep him going for days.

He sighed wearily as he was returning to the dorms. Aizawa was busy with a case again which while he understood, found beyond frustrating. Shinsou was just unable to train if he wasn’t around! Like he wasn’t able to do it with the same intensity and it felt like a wasted effort. Screw it, maybe he should just wait for Aizawa to be free before continuing? Regardless he had a good time at the arcade again then roamed supermarkets for a while, getting some snacks and drinks for his raiding session tonight.

He was just so exhausted! They’d been doing rescue training for what felt like months now! When were they going to have combat exercises? It was when he could use his quirk and actually show the progress he made. It wasn’t that he hated rescue training – far from it – but it was just so tedious and boring. Anyone with half a braincell could do basic rescue, it was combat and dealing with villains heroes needed training – at least that was what he thought.

He returned to the dorms and was met with a sight that really annoyed him. Midoriya and Uraraka were snuggled up on the couch watching a movie together. Naturally he would be so cavalier about hero training…having a girlfriend was a privilege for the golden boy. Skating by because he had a powerful quirk and was book smart. If you were in the hero course you didn’t get the luxury of dating but he of course got away with it.

He wasn’t the only one though…there were a number of couples in the hero course by this point. Those two, Kirishima and Ashido, Jirou and Todoroki, Shouji and pony girl from class B and they apparently suspected Tokoyami going out with someone from gen ed. Idiots! Heroes shouldn’t be indulging in dating like that.

He glowered at the two. Uraraka however noticed and turned to him about to say something to them but Midoriya whispered something to her, making her turn back to the movie. His eye twitched and he walked over to them and sat right next to them. Uraraka clearly wasn’t amused but said nothing.

“Hey Shinsou-kun” Midoriya said awkwardly.

“What are you watching?” he asked.

“…rom-coms”

There was a good chance to mock him, “Seriously?” he asked amused.

“There’s nothing wrong with them” he replied evenly.

“Sure except no self-respecting guy would ever watch them” he snorted.

Uraraka gave him an annoyed look, “If you’re here just to make fun of him then go away”

He narrowed his eyes, “Why should I?”

“Babe let it go” Midoriya said exasperated.

“No, I’m done walking around eggshells with him. You literally just came over to annoy us just because you had a shit and need an outlet. If you’re not going to shut up then go away and leave us alone. We want to watch the movie”

“Then go up to your room. I’m a part of this class as well and I sit wherever I like”

Uraraka was about to say something but Midoriya placed a placating hand on her shoulder making her huff, “Shinsou-kun it’s fine if you want to hang out here, but we don’t get a lot of alone time. Can you please let us be?”

“No”

“…really?”

He smirked, “What’s the matter? Can’t solve things if you can’t punch them?” he taunted.

He sighed, “I tried” he picked her up in a bridal carry, “I’ll make you mochi later”

“You’re the best honey~” she giggled as they walked away.

He couldn’t help but gape…that fucking arrogant prick! God they made him sick. Going around and rubbing their relationship in everyone’s faces. They were going to be that type of hero who spent more time posting on social media than actually doing hero work – the type that Stain went after. Given what an attention whore Midoriya was, he wouldn’t be surprised at all. They had no concept of what real heroism was at all…he wished Aizawa would just boot the idiot.

Great now his mood was ruined even more…fuck it, he needed a nice long raiding session to get his mind off things.

Yes! Combat exercises had started again. The teachers made them really realistic, probably using real life situations they’d been when they created them. It was exactly he was looking for – not physical training, not rescue exercise – this! This was his time to shine!

At least it was supposed to be…firstly it sucked because they had to do them in big teams. He was going to be an underground hero, he wasn’t going to be participating in them for publicity stunts. He’d focus on his own work which was going to be actual work instead of posturing.

But much to his annoyance they had to do them in big teams. All their exercises had been in teams of four or more which was annoying. It just meant more people who’d complicate everything because they didn’t want to listen to him! So many times he’d told them the perfect plan that was right in front of them, but they’d just brush him off! They’d relegate him to stupid positions when he should be taking lead. With his quirk and the voice modulator he could take down anybody with ease. He should be the ace in every team’s pocket but they used him defensively which was frustrating.

And as much as he wanted to brainwash everyone and just do things on his term, it was proving far more difficult than in the sports festival. They were more often than not in closed spaces and things got chaotic which meant he often lost focus so he couldn’t establish or maintain brainwashing on his targets. Not to mention he was learning that some people just broke free of it a lot easier than others which was dumbfounding. It was all the proof he needed to focus on training his quirk more and forget about everything else. His quirk was incredible and it had a lot of uses for hero work…it could overpower the strongest of people and he had to be able to control anyone with ease.

Mostly it certainly wasn’t helped by everyone being wary of him…since that day when Satou got in trouble, everyone had been casting doubtful gazes at him and being careful while reacting towards him…typical, judging him for his quirk. It made him sick to see people like this in the hero course. They had no place being here and judging people for things out of their control. Especially people like Mineta who shouldn’t even be allowed to be in the hero course – the fact that he got in the hero course over Shinsou infuriated him to no end. The teachers were all thrilled that he’d ‘cleaned up his act’ but it was nothing but a farce. The guy was still a perverted twerp not matter how much he tried to act otherwise.

He was especially frustrated right now since he had been relegated to protect the flag while they ran about doing whatever they wanted. It was so frustrating! He could guarantee a victory but naturally since Princess was the leader they all went with her plans. Didn’t help that her groupie was there too so she’d just blindly follow everything she said.

He checked the time – five minutes to go…wait this was perfect! He could take the initiative and steal the flag himself. He was confident in his stealth abilities…he could snatch the victory then turn things around on his team by showing that they had clearly misused his abilities.

A crash from behind him made him freeze in shock. He whirred to see Bakugou smirking at him before giving him a mock salute, “Later extra!” he grabbed the flag. Shinsou tried to grab him with his capture cloth but he was far too agile. He made his best effort to catch up to him as he ran back to his base but he left him in the dust. His lungs burned as he tried his best to keep up with him, but he was finding he had to be much more cautious while jumping around. Each time he was about to, the thought of his knees blowing out or falling face first kept ringing in his mind…not that it mattered though because Bakugou was long gone.

It wasn’t long before the opposition began to celebrate. Kaminari appeared a few seconds later with the flag in hand and a baffled expression on his face, “What the fuck?! We were two seconds from winning?!”

Fuck!

“Yaoyorozu want to explain what went wrong?” Aizawa asked.

“Sensei I had Shinsou-san acting as guard for the flag. His quirk was best suited since he could instantly immobilize anyone on the offense. Since Bakugou-san was in the opposition team I reasoned he would invariably go on the offensive and was liable to slip up so he could catch him with his quirk. Everyone else was working to distract and divide the opposition before Kaminari-san grabbed it. We had the flag in hand but…” her face fell, “Bakugou-san already returned”

“I see…” Aizawa muttered before turning to him, “Shinsou you want to explain what happened”

He didn’t want to disappoint his mentor, “I got unlucky sensei. Bakugou snuck up on me and it won’t happen again” he shrugged.

He got odd looks from everyone including Aizawa which threw him off, “…come again?” Aizawa asked raising an eyebrow.

“What’s wrong?”

Sero was looking at him like he was an idiot, “Dude…Bakugou can’t sneak up on people. His quirk is literal explosions which he won’t stop using for even a second”

Bakugou scoffed, “Nor do I want to. Sneaking around is for pussies”

“Language” All Might warned making Bakugou mutter an annoyed ‘sorry’.

“…Shinsou don’t lose focus again. Yaoyorozu you need to do a better job at planning with your teammates”

She looked taken aback, “But sensei-“

“Enough. You’re the team leader so you need to take responsibility for failures”

“That isn’t fair sensei!” Jirou yelled.

“Detention both you”

Shinsou felt more than vindicated at that. Except, “Aizawa-kun that’s enough” All Might interjected. Oh great!

“Don’t interfere All Might” he replied coolly.

The former Symbol of Peace gave him a flat look, “We’re going to talk about this. All of you dismissed. Jirou, Yaoyoruzu you are excused from your detentions”

“You can’t just-“

“Not in front of the students Aizawa” he warned.

He scoffed, “Fine…get back to the dorms”

His classmates were starting to show their true colours. Wary gazes and an arm’s length at all times – their attitude sickened him. The only silver lining had been that he got so much more freedom in the dorms now. He didn’t have to worry about his classmates annoying him so he could get out of his room for a change. It was nice to take a little walk between raiding sessions.

Hero training had been a little better because his teammates just let him do as he pleased instead of trying to lock him down in terrible positions. It would have been a little better if All Might didn’t keep intervening. See things obviously went wrong when people didn’t listen to him, which he explained after each exercise. Aizawa would have had his back, but All Might kept pinning the blame on him for not working with his team. Typical…he never thought much of him but he’d definitely slid down the totem pole quite a bit. Oaf knew nothing about heroism and just talked big it looked like.

He groaned lightly as he tried to stand up. His knee was freaking killing him! Why did people have to run around like headless chickens? The minute anyone saw Shinsou, they’d just start running past him which was frustrating. He might be very good at taunts but it was a lot harder to think up off good ones when he was perpetually out of breath. What a joke, hero course students being cowards and running away from the big, bad ‘villain’. It made him sick…it was so frustrating because he wasn’t able to show the progress he’d made with his quirk.

It just left him in a perpetual foul mood…he’d been gaming a lot more because his classmates were just pissing him off. Even though midterms were around the corner, he figured he’d do better if he were nice and relaxed. He could do basic revision the night before and that would be good enough for them. He was smart, he’d done so well in gen ed so he figured there was nothing to worry about.

If only he knew.

Fuck, fuck, fuck!

He bombed his midterms big time. If that wasn’t bad enough, he had terrible grades in hero classes from all the teachers apart from Aizawa. Now he wanted to say his grade was the only one that mattered, but that wasn’t what was shown on the report cards. Thankfully report cards were sent home only at the end of terms. He didn’t need his mom freaking out on top of all the stress he already had going on.

Aizawa though had pulled him aside for a talk, “What’s going on Shinsou? It isn’t like you to do this badly”

What was he supposed to say? He didn’t want to let down the man who’d believed in him so much and had done so much for him. He swallowed, “I’ve been having trouble sleeping…plus everyone is super loud in the dorms” he mumbled.

“I see…you’ve been having trouble concentrating in the new dorms?”

He nodded, “Yeah…I tried to ask them to keep the noise down but they just won’t listen. It’s frustrating”

“I’ll talk to them about it…honestly problem children” he muttered rubbing his head, “You’ll be fine Shinsou. I don’t think I need to tell you to get your grades up”

“No sir”

“Good. Come on now”

“Quite hours are in effect from six to eight. No excessive noise or you’ll have detention for a week”

“Sensei that isn’t fair!” Kaminari whined.

“Quiet”

“Sensei it’s the only time we get to hang out as a class! Come on be fair!” Ashido pleaded.

“I have told you kids repeatedly that life isn’t fair. You aren’t here to socialize you’re here to be heroes. I’ve been tolerant of your noise levels so far but it is affecting one of your classmates’ ability to study so I'm drawing the line”

Perfect. Now he could get them to shut up and put them in their place in one move. This was brilliant on his part. The best part was that it meant the common area would be clear in the evenings and he could watch anime on the TV while eating in peace. It was a little harder in his room with his laptop.

He was about to head upstairs but he was confronted by Ashido and Kaminari who didn’t look happy, “Dude what the hell?! If you had an issue with the noise you could have talked to us” Ashido told him frowning.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about”

“We’re not idiots” Kaminari told him, “You were smirking the whole time. Just because you don’t want to socialize doesn’t mean you have to stop the rest of us from”

He scoffed, “I did you a favour. If you want to be a hero, you shouldn’t be wasting time on frivolous things like that. Especially you two considering how dull the two of you are”

“Oh wow such a creative insult Shinsou!” Ashido gasped dramatically, “Nobody’s ever made fun of my academics before! Oh boo hoo, how will I ever recover?!” she fake cried.

Kaminari slapped a hand over his mouth trying to suppress his laughter which made him see red, “Oh yeah? How about the fact that you two will end up as mediocre pros who’ll be nothing more than glorified secretaries”

She cocked her head cockily, “Awww you actually think we’ll become pros! How sweet Shinsou-chan~” she cooed, “Anyways…sensei didn’t specify if quiet hours were for the am or pm. Good luck trying to sleep!”

He was only able to gape as they walked away. None of his taunts had worked at all. They’d so casually brushed it off which was what got to him. He hadn’t considered using his quirk for once, but he had always been so confident getting under people’s skin. It was important for him after all since he needed his opponents to verbally respond to control them.

And he was a hundred percent sure he’d picked out their exact insecurities. After watching them and seeing them interact with others, it was obvious. Yet they hadn’t let him get a rise out of them. It was seriously throwing him for a loop!

And then she proceeded to find a loophole in Aizawa’s new rule. That was the furthest thing from heroic behaviour and in his mind proved to him that those two completely lacked potential either. It was like acid in his veins seeing all these people who’d got into the hero course over him the first time.

Feeling particularly tired he decided to go to sleep early for a change. Unfortunately for him his classmates had decided to be extra loud tonight which had kept him up all night. His eyes were rooted on the far wall wanting so badly to punch someone. Now that everyone was finally quiet he better get some shut eyes.

He was startled awake by his alarm. As it had been throughout this semester he yet again looked up to his table clock seeing 8:45 am blaring at his tired eyes. Late again…

Fuck!

Midnight managed to say the worst possible thing bright and early in the morning, “Alright before you kids run off, remember your final research assignment if due tomorrow after class. I hope for all your sakes, you are all done or mostly done since it’s twenty percent of your final grades”

“You finished weeks ago didn’t you Momo?” Jirou teased her.

She blushed, “It makes no sense to keep work pending” she shot back.

He’d been distracted all day because of it…but he could handle this. He’d always been able to smash out assignments in no time. So he decided to skip the arcade for a change and was sitting at his desk with several cans of energy drinks with his mind focused and determined to finish it.

Except there was way too much research to do in such a short amount of time. As the night wore on his focus and determination began to slip. He looked at his clock and cursed at the fact that there were only three hours left for class.

His grades hadn’t been the best lately…classes had just been going so fast and he’d bombed the midterms. Hero course students needed a seventy percent average to pass, whereas gen ed needed just fifty. To make things worse not only were the pacing of the classes much, much faster but they barely got time outside school to study. He had been one of the best students in gen ed, so he didn’t understand why he was struggling so much now.

The final exams were a month away and he had a lot to cover. He needed to get over ninety-four percent in all his finals if he had any hope of staying in the hero course. This was not looking good…

He couldn’t fail this assignment or he had no hopes of reaching the cut-off, then remaining in the hero course was out of question even if Aizawa vouched for him. But he didn’t have enough time to make a good enough one now…

The lack of sleep, his desperation and his anger at his classmates birthed a terrible idea. Now he normally wouldn’t entertain such a plan…but he was reminded of every time Yaoyorozu had offered to let him join her study group or share her notes. Most of all he was reminded of that day how she had tried to throw him under the buss but had gotten away because of All Might’s needless interference. She needed to be knocked down a peg – so he figured what the hell? He’d be killing tow birds with one stone.

Whatever it took right? A hero had to be willing to do anything to succeed. He was not giving up his place in the hero course no matter what.

He knocked on her door and she pulled it open. She was a bit surprised and her eyes hardened, “Shinsou-san? Can I help you with something?”

“Hmm…you know that assignment for modern arts right?”

“…yes. Do you need help with it? We don’t have much…” she trailed off as her eyes glazed over.

Far too easy…but his heart began to hammer in his chest, “Go fetch me your assignment” he ordered. He watched as she walked over to her desk picked it up before walking over to him and handing it over. He was actually doing this…he broke out in a nervous sweat realizing he had to commit to this. He better cover all his bases. He couldn’t have her submitting the same assignment - that would be too obvious. He swallowed, “Open your laptop and delete this assignment from it

He watched with bated breath as she followed up. Anyone could walk in on them right now…they would get in his way. But nobody did and he felt a thread of relief once she did. He realized he was screwing her over pretty badly, but she scored high enough she could afford to lose a few marks. Not to mention it’d be a pretty nice lesson in humility for her. Almost like one of Aizawa’s rational deceptions.

He swallowed thickly, “Go lie down on your bed for two minutes then snap out of it

She slowly and very mechanically walked towards the bed almost seeming like she was resisting it which made him extremely nervous. But she didn’t and the minute she lay down, he pulled her door shut and rushed back to his room. Now all he had to do was change the cover page and…voila!

He was in the clear.

He found it rather amusing seeing the Princess panicking looking everywhere for her assignment. He almost burst out into a satisfied laugh seeing her horrified expression when she pulled out her laptop and couldn’t find it anywhere. He was definitely enjoying seeing her knocked down a peg – always flaunting her wealth and acting like she knew better than everyone else.

“It’s alright dear. You can submit it next week, I’m sure you have a valid reason” Midnight assured her.

His jaw fell open. Of fucking course she’d get an extension! He couldn’t help but give Midnight the stink eye as she assured the frantic girl. However, his heart sunk when her eyes flicked over to him with a curious expression. He glanced away trying to play it cool. His heart pounded in his chest as her eyes slowly looked back to Yaoyorozu.

He was in the clear…oh god he really was in the clear. He sat back in his chair feeling an odd sense of satisfaction at that. He’d used his quirk beyond well and he’d tricked even a pro hero. He was sure Aizawa would be proud of him for how he’d pulled this off. He lay back in his chair not really paying attention in maths – because if he had he would have noticed that the substitute teacher was present instead of Ectoplasm.

He only realized it at the end of math when Midnight returned to the classroom looking very displeased, “Shinsou-kun come with me now. The principal wants to see you”

Whispers broke around the class instantly. He felt his blood turn to ice realizing he’d been caught. But how?! He was so sure he’d covered all his bases and other than his surprised reaction, they had nothing…yeah! They had no evidence! If they accused him of stealing her assignment he’d deny it through his teeth and they couldn’t punish him without evidence…

Right?

The principal had always unnerved him. Despite appearing like a small, docile animal there was something vaguely predatory in those little beady eyes of his. No – Nezu was not someone to be trifled with. His smile was overly friendly, “You are very fortunate that Aizawa-kun has so vehemently argued for you to stay on. He was my student and has been my employee for a number of years so I trust his judgement”

He felt relief thread to him. Aizawa had come through.

He seemed to read his mind, “Don’t believe for a second you are getting away with this. This will be going on your permanent record and you will be receiving a zero for this assignment. You have only stayed on here because Aizawa-kun used up his last favour with me. You thought you were very clever stealing Yaoyorozu’s assignment. Not only does she print her name and student ID on every page, but she is one of the three students who submits assignments of this length from your class. There are about a hundred different ways we can prove it is hers even if you tried your best to hide the fact”

His throat felt dry and he could only nod mutely.

“Academic disintegrity of this sort is not tolerated regardless of the course. Hero course students are held to a much higher degree in a number of ways which you have consistently failed. Aizawa-kun believes in you…I’ve always had serious doubts about your potential but this stunt has convinced me. Consider this your final straw…even the smallest, pettiest, most insignificant complaint – and you are done. Understood?”

His mouth felt dry, “Yes sir”

“Good. There were other concerns I wished to discuss, however All Might has volunteered to do so. You are on house arrest for the next week and you will be serving detention with All Might every evening from five to eight”

His eyes widened in alarm. He wasn’t going to have time to study! He felt his breath begin to hasten, “But the final exams are-“

“I’m well aware. Perhaps you should have thought of that before you decided to cheat” he replied coolly taking a sip of his tea, “You may leave now Shinsou-kun”

He was rooted in place for a moment but his tone left no room to argue. As he walked back to the dorms he felt a weight settle on his chest. That weight transformed into anger realizing just how fucked he was! He was already struggling with academics as is and now he was going to miss out on a whole week. Anybody else it would have been fine because their classmates would have helped them out, but not him. No, they’d throw him to the wolves and he’d be out the hero course.

He stormed back to the dorms ready to give their class president a piece of his mind. Except the moment he walked through the doors he almost fell over when he was struck fiercely across the cheek. He looked up with shocked eyes to see Yaoyorozu glaring at him with tear filled eyes, “Don’t ever talk to me again! And after all the times I offered to help you! Rot in hell!” she spat and stormed off.

He took a moment to collect himself but got no reprieve as Kirishima walked up to him looking very upset. He didn’t expect him to look so scary, “Shinsou that was no cool at all. You stole her assignment and tried to get her to fail! What is wrong with you?!”

“Save the posturing” he cut him off angrily making him flinch, “You’re only bothering just because of my quirk”

“Oh, so you did absolutely nothing wrong?” Jirou asked sarcastically, “Saint Shinsou who can do no wrong. Didn’t try to cheat on an assignment or try to screw over his classmate”

He scowled at her, “You’re only making out to be a big deal because of my quirk. You hero brats are all the same. You understand nothing! All of you coasting by without ever working hard a single day in your lives. None of you have any idea what it’s like to struggle for something”

A loud slam on the table earned all their attention. Bakugou stood up glowering, “That is fucking it! I admit I’m a piece of work but – you! You are the most entitled, lazy and delusional fucking asshole I ever met! You act like you’ve struggled in your life and like you’re the only one who works hard when you can’t even do ten pushups without keeling over. Fucking Grape Shit is scraping the bottom of the barrel and even he can manage three times that!”

“Hey!” Mineta whined.

“He’s not wrong” Sero shrugged making him give him the stink eye.

Bakugou wasn’t done though, “You sit around in your room all-day long playing video games, put zero fucking effort in anything be it academics or hero training yet you have the fucking audacity to act like we’re underserving? To act like we are coasting by? Says the guy who had to cheat on the easiest assignment we’ve ever got. The fucking disrespect! It pisses me off!”

He grit his teeth before smirking viciously having found the perfect taunt, “Well I have nothing to say to an actual villain. Why don’t you run back to your buddies in the League?”

Everyone went completely before slowly turning to him looking like he was a dead man. He looked around confused before his eyes fell back on Bakugou…now strangely enough Bakugou wasn’t exploding out of his mind and shaking like a rabid dog. No – he was calm, far calmer than anyone had ever seen him before. In fact too calm.

“You’re dead” he spoke in that same disturbingly calm tone. He began to walk towards him and he was just rooted in place in terror watching as he slowly advanced towards him.

Kirishima, Midoriya and Todoroki leapt at him instantly trying to restrain him, “Bakugou calm down!” Kirishima yelled.

“I am calm shitty hair. Perfectly calm”

“Kacchan heroes can’t murder people” Midoriya tried to reason.

“I’m just going to unalive him Deku. No sweat”

“It’s the same thing!” Ashido yelled.

“Will you stop trying to reason with him and help me restrain him?” Todoroki grunted trying to freeze his legs in place.

“Young Bakugou that’s enough” All Might’s authoritative voice cut through them as they all went still.

“I-“

“I said enough. Go cool off in the gym”

He clenched his first, “Yes sir” he growled before stalking off. Kirishima sighed and followed after him but not before shooting Shinsou a heated glare.

He turned his gaze to Shinsou looking sorely disappointed, “Come with me young man. Your detention starts now”

He clenched his teeth as he followed after All Might. How was any of this fair?

Detention had been horrid. All Might had him clean out the entire gym and hadn’t let him slack off at all. It had been three hours of continuous hard work so he was sure he was thinking up some punishment back when he was a kid.

He was about to go back to the dorms but All Might stopped him which made him want to tear his hair out, “What is it All Might?” he bit out.

He gave him a stern look, “Young man you need to cut the attitude out. You’re only hurting yourself. You won’t become a hero this way”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about” he shot back coldly.

“Perhaps…I was only the number one hero longer than your mentor was alive, so I think I know at least a little about heroism and the industry. I am trying to help you”

He gaped for a moment before he scowled, “…just get to the point”

“Are you not listening? Shinsou I am not dismissing your past or your hardships, but you have become too comfortable using them as an excuse for your behaviour. Get out of your own way young man. Heroism takes far more than a strong quirk – it needs years of focus, dedication and hard work. What you did today was a terrible, terrible thing and you are fortunate to remain in the hero course”

He felt his frustration being to build. Great another lecture, “If you say so All Might” he muttered.

“Are you even listening to what I’m saying?” he asked exasperated.

“Yeah” he replied dismissively.

He pinched the bridge of his nose, “You know what young man? You’re on your own. When you decide to get your head out of the clouds and really start working towards being a hero, I will gladly help you out. But as you are now - you are neither fit nor deserving of being in the hero course. You can go back to the dorms now. I will see you tomorrow”

All Might’s words kept ringing in his head as he walked back to the dorms. Get his head out of the clouds? Was he saying that he didn’t work hard? What did he know? The same guy that openly favoured Midoriya as a teacher. He just didn’t get it…he was too blessed with a super powerful quirk which made him the number one hero. He bet he’d never worked hard a day in his life either. No wonder he and Midoriya got along so well – they were practically the same.

But what was gnawing at him was the fact that Aizawa hadn’t contacted him at all today. He’d been the only one who argued for him, so he obviously understood why he did it. Well…he might be busy with work so he’d just wait for him to get back to him. He’d help him figure out this situation and help him stay in the hero course – he was sure of it.

He was panicking. He hadn’t been able to get in contact with Aizawa at all outside and his practical finals were beginning in two hours. He was always busy with work and in class he’d straight up been avoidant with him during classes. He refused to look or even talk to him which left him feeling lost and hurt. He was his mentor, why wasn’t he there for him when he needed him the most?

His written exams had not gone well. He’d ended up doing a lot of last-minute cramming but no information seemed to stick in his mind at all. He had been seriously tempted to ask Yaoyorozu for help but she’d made it clear that he was her least favourite person in the school. So, he swallowed his pride and asked his former classmates from gen ed to help him out.

Much to his surprise they agreed…at first. He just couldn’t help but get frustrated each time they deviated from studying to talk about something stupid. His whole dream was on the line and they were talking about freaking food? Gradually his temper built before it spilt over and he verbally lashed out at them, insulting them in every way that he could. Kazehara had looked so betrayed when he bought up his dead mother.

None of them had talked to him since.

With a sense of foreboding, he walked into his written exams, all of which had gone horribly. The knowledge that he had to score so highly to maintain his average just destroyed any possibility of looking at it positively and if anything made him do even worse then he would have otherwise.

Maybe he could make it up with the practical test? With his quirk it’d be a cinch, he’d score as high as he could then Aizawa would have wiggle room to argue for him. He knew it was going to be difficult but he could manage this.

He walked into yet another cold reception from his class. Several of them shot him cold glares which he ignored but it was more so the wall of silence between them. He couldn’t use his quirk on people who just ignored his existence altogether. It was frustrating beyond belief!

But it was even worse so because of Aizawa. He absolutely refused to even look at him. He’d take anything – a glance, a nod – some acknowledgement of his existence.

“Alright here are the teams for the examination”

Of course…teams. They just had to make it harder for him again. He glanced up at the board – Iida, Hagakure, Satou and Shouji were on his team. It wasn’t ideal but he could-

“Sensei! The four of us refuse to work with him!” Iida spoke up suddenly. He felt his blood turn to ice as he turned as he turned to look at his four supposed teammates.

“Excuse me?” Aizawa asked.

Shouji walked forward, “We don’t trust him. He freely uses his quirk to control his classmates and he has no hesitation trying to screw us over which he tried in the past. We don’t want to jeopardize our futures or safety because of his issues”

Midnight pursed her lips, “You are aware you’re requesting to have one less member on your team, are you not?”

“We are” Hagakure replied, “But we’re better off with four people instead of having him trying to screw us over”

“You can’t do this” he spat venomously.

“On the contrary” Nezu began, “They can Shinsou-kun. Heroes are people and differences between them will exist. Most of them choose to be professional and overlook them but there are cases where they choose not to work with each other”

“That isn’t rational” he snapped.

“Oh it is very rational young man. Better to avoid clashes occurring on the field which can lead to people getting hurt. As such I have to commend the four of you for speaking up. Most would not have the courage”

“Wh-what’s going to happen to me?” Shinsou asked shakily.

He turned to him, “It’s obvious isn’t it? You will be failing your final exam”

He couldn’t breathe, “Y-you can’t do this! You can’t!” he screamed

Nezu simply continued to smile, “Oh I assure you I can Shinsou-kun. Perhaps you should take this time to reflect on how your own actions have led to this occurring instead of playing the victim as you usually do…you’re welcome to stay and watch if you like. Have a nice day Shinsou-kun”

His entire body was numb. But nobody seemed to look vindicated or satisfied at all. No they looked relieved and focused forward on the exam. He looked over at the staff but none of them were bothered with him – no their whole focus similarly was on the exam. Aizawa for the first time in weeks finally acknowledged his existence and his eyes showed only one single thing.

Disappointment.

He walked back to the dorms and went into his room before lying on his bed. He wished the earth would just swallow him up right then and there.

His parents hadn’t been happy with him at all. His dad had scolded him badly for the cheating incident and they apparently had a long conversation with Nezu about his behaviour over the year. He didn’t know why they wouldn’t take his side! They kept asking him why he didn’t get along with his classmates, why he didn’t work hard, why he was so antagonistic towards people and why he kept acting like he was being discriminated against all the time – he tried explaining it but they weren’t listening!

His mind wasn’t really in it either…after all it wasn’t every day when your dream went up in flames. He’d been booted from the hero course and UA with a black mark on his record for cheating but worse still Aizawa had ended his apprenticeship with him. All he’d got from the man was him was a look of disappointment and telling him that he’d misjudged his potential. Of everything that was what had hurt the most.

He trudged out of his room and was surprised to see All Might sitting in his living room, “What are you doing here?” he hissed.

“I’m here to have a chat with you. Go ahead and take a seat”

His mouth felt sour, “…I’m not feeling well. I’m going to –“

“Hitoshi sit down right now” his father ordered in a calm but stern tone. With no other option he huffed and sat down with his arms crossed.

All Might sighed, “Tell me young man, why do you wish to be a hero?”

He shrugged, “The heart wants what the heart wants” he echoed what he’d told Midoriya at the sports festival.

“That is fair…people have many different reasons for being a hero and there’s nothing wrong with that. You can’t expect everyone to have noble reasons and it is simply not realistic. Heroism is still a profession through which people make an earning”

He was surprised All Might of all people was saying this, “Where are you going with this?”

“Bear with me…now if you did become a hero, what then?”

He looked at him confused, “What do you mean?”

“After you became a hero, what would you do after that? Did you ever give that thought?”

“…what does this have to do with anything?”

“Everything young man. After you become a pro hero, that is when the real challenge begins. You will never have a moment to yourself, you will spend your time in the line of fire and you will be responsible for people’s lives. Have you ever wondered why despite it being such a coveted profession there are such few pro heroes?”

“…why?”

“It’s simple because most don’t make it. About forty percent drop out in their first year on the field, and seventy percent of graduates call it quits within five years, usually because they are stuck being sidekicks”

“You’re kidding…”

He shook his head, “I am not. Young man I was a pro hero for almost four decades. Neither is it an easy profession to get into, nor is it an easy one to stay in. It takes a lot of dedication and work to be a pro hero. People often get blinded by the glamour and riches, thinking its all about posing for the media. Maybe it was to an extent because of my presence but it is fading fast. There is no longer a Symbol for everyone to rely on and people can sense it. Pro heroism is only going to become more demanding in coming years”

“What does this have to do with me? I’m not going to be a hero” he spat.

He looked him dead in the eyes, “I met a young man a couple of years back. Much like you he wished to be a hero…he asked me if he could be a hero without a quirk. I told him he couldn’t”

What the…All Might of all people said no? Even his parents looked shocked.

“I had my reasons for saying so. Without a powerful quirk you can’t fight villains head on or tackle dangerous situations without being a liability. It’s cruel but it was a reality…I told him as much crushing his spirit” he looked up, “But that same boy taught me something important about heroism that day. Maybe without a quirk it is difficult, borderline impossible…but as long as you have a deep desire within you to help people, truly anyone can become a hero”

He swallowed lightly hearing that.

“Young Hitoshi you have made some terrible mistakes. But it is not the end for you…if you still wish to be a hero, the path ahead for you will be difficult and painful but if you truly commit yourself to it then I have no doubt that one day you can become a fine hero. Not the most popular or well know, but a good one”

“I did commit myself!” he screamed, “I worked so hard but it did nothing!”

“Did you really work hard?” he asked him, “Can you look me in the eyes and tell me that you put everything into becoming a hero? That you devoted all your focus and capabilities towards it? What you fail to understand is that you have become too used to playing the victim – too used to assuming everything has to do with your quirk, that you have become blinded to your own faults. You pushed away your classmates and treated them horrendously. People have treated you like a villain not because of your quirk but because of your attitude and the fact that you are the one judging people based on their quirks”

“But…I don’t…” he whispered.

“Did you bother getting to know your classmates or did you assume they would hate you for your quirk? Did you know young Midoriya was considered quirkless for the first fifteen years of his life”

“What?!”

He nodded, “He did not have his quirk until he entered UA. He was bullied relentlessly and degraded by everyone around him. He has constantly tried to befriend you because he empathizes with what you went through. But you never saw him…you only saw the powerful quirk and assumed he lived a blessed life”’

“B-but…he’s UA’s golden boy…he-“

“He worked incredibly hard to reach where he is. Everyone that class has worked hard…that is why they are special. Not because of their quirks or who they are but simply because they work twice as hard as anyone else. Their sister class has unfortunately not caught onto that fact”

“…I…I don’t know if I can work like that…”

“That is fine” he replied, “If you don’t believe you can devote yourself to that degree than there are plenty of other professions which don’t involve dealing with death and disaster. Heroism isn’t the end all be all that people make it out to be. It does not matter what profession you chose as long as you are passionate about it and are dedicated. I always wished to become a pro hero so I worked myself to the bone to become one. Similarly - if you wish for it from the bottom of your heart then you will have to work three or four times as hard as any of them”

That was not a comforting thought…

He placed a brochure on the table, “Here are some university level hero courses. They are not particularly great, but it is still a good opportunity. Some incredible heroes have come from courses of the sort – Mirko is a very good example”

“What?!”

“Yup. It took her years of training to reach where she was, but she never went to a hero high school. Incredible isn’t it? At twenty-six she is in the top ten and someone I wouldn’t have fancied taking on towards the end of my career”

“Then…I can-“

He nodded kindly, “You can. My phone number is written on the back of the brocheure. Regardless of what you choose, feel free to always reach out to me if you wish to talk. I wish you luck” he stood up and bowed to his parents, “Thank you for hosting me”

“Oh it’s our pleasure” his mother replied, “It’s not every day we have the Symbol of Peace in our home”

“I am retired now ma’am but it warms my heart that it means so much to you. I will be taking my leave”

His father glanced down at him once All Might departed, “Well…what have you decided?”

He could only stare at the sheet in his hands not knowing what to do. Could he become a hero? He definitely believed All Might but the real question was…

Did he want to be a hero?

Notes:

This was meant to tackle 2 common tropes:
1. Shinsou replacing Mineta
2. Dadzawa + All Might bashing
Shinsou could have an entire arc where he gets over his own hangups but we just have him entering the hero course without seeing him put any effort at all. His quirk is good for hero work kind of cheapens Midoriya's whole arc, which is also a problem shared by Bakugou.
As for the latter, it's rather interesting considering Aizawa had a heel realization canonically in the war arc when he questioned wanting to boot Midoriya. Aizawa the mentor - sure. Dadzawa is cringe. Also All Might is wholesome, can we stop hating on him for telling him no? It was said wrong but came from a good place.
Hope you guys enjoyed and feel free to share any other tropes you'd like me to tackle. Kind of running dry on ideas at the moment XD
