Work Text:
Wednesday is absent, and Enid is in their room. The sun goes down through the glass separating the two sides of the room about five in the afternoon. Following a mental image of Thing with brand-new blue nail paint, the blonde is currently typing on her phone.
Enid's new pastime is posting about him on her Instagram and buying him a new phone before Christmas. If Enid's classes are over or she simply didn't want to stomp on each of it, so they can hang out wherever they want.
She asks, "What do you think?" while displaying her phone to her friend. She used the heart and hand emojis in a description for a post that said, 'He's so silly.' Thing gives nothing but a thumbs up in approval. Enid grins broadly while relaxing on her bed and listening to a Spotify playlist she created.
She has been staring at the ceiling for the past ten minutes, and Thing is by her side playing a game so called 'Goosebumps Night of Scares' with faint music from Enid's playlist playing in the background.
"I miss Wednesday, it feels like I haven't seen her in forever." She murmured abruptly, looking at the hand by her side, "You are so gay for her," Thing says in a sign language as Enid frowns at him once he stops playing with his phone. Even if it's true, she still isn't able to admit that she loves Wednesday. In a romantic way.
She had no idea when it started, but every time Wednesday gave her those lifeless stares, she felt as though there was something hidden there that only she could see. It was like a warm blanket when winter arrived. Ha, she bet Xavier is already envious of her because Wednesday let Enid touch her.
Wednesday was both her half and the remaining side of her vibrant world.
Before she could answer, a loud crash from the door surprised the two of them, causing Enid to suddenly sit up and look at Wednesday, who was visibly perspiring heavily, having a difficult time walking, and whose hair was a complete mess. "Oh. My. God," Enid exclaims, as she rushes over and turns to look into her eyes. Upon seeing her roommate in this state, Enid almost feels like going ferocious. She's totally not okay right now. "I'm in pain," Wednesday pushed Enid away to sit next to her bed while cursing, but she then collapsed and hissed in agony. The dark-haired girl gave Enid and Thing permission to assist her in sitting down on a chair. Enid asked, staring into her eyes, "What happened?"
"I need to clean up first but I unfortunately couldn't do that on my o–"
"I'll help you," Enid says getting up and finding the medical kit that she was hiding somewhere.
"Fuck where is that goddamn thing," Enid was clearly in panic mode as Wednesday watched every move she made with great attention. She almost grinned at the thought, but the pain in her ankle was still very much with her. Finally, after finding the kit, Enid returned and engaged Wednesday in a gazing competition as the smaller girl cleared her throat. "Oh okay, yes." Enid says as she knelt on her. "This is so mortifying." Wednesday muttered. "Needing assistance every once in a while is not embarrassing." The blonde dismisses her complaints and grabs the alcohol and cotton. "Tell me where it hurts."
Wednesday didn't respond; instead, she just stared at the girl who was so concerned about her. Then, that irksome feeling struck her like a bat once more. She murmurs, "Every..where." Enid looks at her in confusion, "What?" The gloomy one shakes her thoughts as the red veins rushing her cheek, "I actually imply, my ankle. I broke my ankle." while taking a big breath and relaxing in her chair.
Wednesday intently observes Enid as she takes off her shoes; on the first attempt, Wednesday made a hurt noise, for which Enid instantly apologized. The second attempt is more cautious; she appears to be in a passing cloud with storms and thunder striking her in a favorable manner. After a minute, Enid gently massaged her ankle while questioning, in a tone that no one would ever want to hear, "Where did you even get this?" even her.
"I tripped." She calmly stated, relishing the feeling of massaging her foot. While cleaning her roommate, Enid remained silent but for a tentative nod.
"How.. are you?" Wednesday asked suddenly, but she wasn't sure what had prompted her to ask. As her ears developed a faint crimson tinge and her heart started to speak, it was as though her body was making her feel vulnerable and ashamed for being in this situation. However, as soon as she catches a glimpse of Enid, who has refrained from smiling and is maintaining a serious expression, all of her worries disappear. Enid quietly replies, "Good. I'm good," as she meticulously cleaning Wednesday's leg cuts and bruises.
She asks with a scowl, "Are you upset with me?" The blonde halts her motion and turns to face the dark haired girl, her blue eyes glinting in her dark ones. "Why would I be mad? You didn't show up to our lunch together and you'll back here with this? This? Do you even see how pale you are?" Wednesday wanted to respond but was unable to. Instead, she listened to her rants. As she was sinking in the blue oceans at this point, Wednesday didn't have time to look away and simply allowed herself to be so frail.
Like her comforting fingertips on her foot couldn't possibly compare to how deeply Enid's eyes touched her.
Wednesday didn't even notice her lips were turning up as Enid said, "You seriously didn't even listening to me and stop smiling moron, but honestly don't stop smiling because you look so adorable." Then, as if blood were to fall on their cheeks, they both flush once they understand what the hell just happened. "Forget that." Enid avoid the eye contact and continue cleaning Wednesday.
After that, they both fell silent as Wednesday observed her. She observed how Enid's hands were so gentle, enveloping her like a blade of grass on a graveyard, while the sky above began to drop tears on her body as she regarded nothing. The eerie warm feeling she was experiencing about Enid eluded her attempts to put it into words.
"And done, good as new." Wednesday noticed the bandages covering her foot, but at least the pain was lessened compared to earlier. After finishing her work, Enid asks, "What do you want for dinner? Do you want pizza or coffee or anything el–?" Enid pauses as Wednesday grabs her wrist to stop her from fleeing. Wednesday mumbled a "thank you" beneath her breath. She could at least appreciate Enid's assistance to her consistently in this way. Still and ever.
The blonde stroked Wednesday's finger with her thumb, calming the dark-haired girl by saying, "It's nothing, Wednesday. You needed help, and I helped you." Wednesday lifts her head, but her eyes are unmarked. It remains hollow and empty as always. "No. I mean, thank you for being here," she replies. Enid frowns in confusion and asks, "What do you mean?"
Slowly releasing her grip, Wednesday says, "Nothing. I would like to have.. just a black coffee," as she gingerly stands up so as not to injure her other foot. Naturally, Enid assists her, warning her to be careful while wrapping her arm around Wednesday and snatching the hand of the young woman with dark hair to place on her shoulder.
Far too near. She was too near enough for Wednesday to see what she was stepping on and instead focused on her Enid's side view, which caused her to gasp and stop breathing. It's unexpected that she has a mole on her neck.
Enid settles Wednesday on the dark side of the room and says, "Wait here, I'll get us some food." As she left their room, her roommate didn't say anything other than to nod.
Following Enid's disappearance from view, Wednesday inhales deeply. She looks around the space as the sun, which is still setting, sets off orange lights that serve as a constant reminder of practically everything. Wednesday's thoughts were interrupted by Thing tapping on her side. "Do you like Enid?" he asked as Wednesday widened her eyes and seized Thing's fingers. "Shut up before she can hear you. And I don't like her," she said, releasing Thing, who was still whining about what the fuck had just happened to him.
"I witness how you stare at her, and you even smile," he remarked. As she closed her eyes to take everything in, Wednesday chose not to respond. She just had a fractured ankle, a sloppy appearance, and a so-called crush on her roommate. Wednesday gently makes her way to the restroom to remove any lingering filth from her body and says, "I need to clean myself. Tell Enid I'm in the bathroom."
Her nose was immediately greeted by the sweet vanilla scent in the bathroom, along with a faint scent of roses and lavender. She closes the door and her eyes as she takes a deep inhale of the intoxicating scent. She walks through the sink, stopping to examine her own image. She was moving through the forest earlier when she unknowingly stepped on a hunter trap. Enid was on her mind the entire time, so she didn't notice the utter stupidity of the scenario.
Enid. Enid. Enid. Enid. She's Everywhere. She's Everything.
She stumbled into a tiny hole and broke her ankle, which led to this humorous story that her own mind laughed at her for.
She walked outside after locking the bathroom door. Despite the fact that Wednesday's ankle is still fractured and makes it difficult for her to walk, she is still as pleasant as ever. Considering Enid is still absent from the room, she squints. She walked towards her bed while adjusting her face and hair and uttered the word "awful."
Enid returned bearing a cheery face, a box of pizza, and two hot beverages in her hand. She looked around in search of her roommate but was unsuccessful. Enid enquires, "Wednesday?" Wednesday, who was seated on the balcony, got up when Enid finally noticed her. The blonde sprints towards the balcony. Wednesday sits back up in the chair, setting her coffee on the floor, and surveys the meal she received, saying, "You are so thoughtful to make me eat a pizza." When she turns left, she sees Enid sitting next to her and enjoying a mouthful of pizza while grinning at her.
Then, she muses. What makes Enid so wonderful that she couldn't even say negatively about her? Why Enid gave this girl a pepperoni pizza for dinner, why Wednesday couldn't even stab her? Wednesday won't be understood by everyone. In actuality, most never will. Instead, judgments are made, thrown left, right, and center, along with her intense, vile feelings, as though it were not her life.
But Enid. Speaking of the female, she came as a complete surprise. The defining moment. Her immaculate, dark world fell into the water as a result of the stars above her slamming into each other violently.
As she ate the pizza in silence, Enid asked, "You okay now?" Wednesday nods. The blonde clearly wants to say something, but she was unable to. Not now at least. "That's good to hear," she says. "Hey care to tell where and why did you get that?" She tries to change the subject, as she points at the dark-haired girl's damaged foot.
Despite her inability to discern the true reason, Wednesday looks at her. She was unable to pinpoint that she was constantly thinking about Enid, and as a result, she just collapsed. Such behavior is pitiful and embarrassing. But sadly, her mouth and body betrayed her as she said, "I was–I was thinking of you." As soon as she realizes what she just said, she breaks eye contact and looks up at the night sky in the hopes that Enid won't notice how much her normally pale complexion is now a river of crimson.
Enid giggles, "Pfft what? Your ankle injured because you were thinking of me." The younger girl nods slowly and says, "I won't do that again." She turned to look at Enid after hearing nothing from the girl sitting next to her. Without making a sound, the blonde was already giving her a profound, eye-to-eye stare.
Only the voices in their heads could be heard interacting with the dark night sky through the waves of the blue ocean.
She was dissolving right now, as said by Wednesday. Like acid was being poured on her; it was too hot, like a metal scorching in the sun, but she was too relaxed and numb to notice.
"Wednesday, I made a crime."
"What is it?"
"I didn't mean to fall for you."
"..."
As all the stars stared at them at that moment, Wednesday was unable to feel everything. She again breaks eye contact to stare off in the distance, indicating that it is too much. The way Enid repeats her name as if it were a plea and the way they both stare at each other reveal too much history. Every scenario was told through the narratives in their eyes, which were playing out in their own small universe and perfectly fusing the light and dark brown colours.
They are lovers but they are friends. They are everything yet nothing at all.
When she hears Enid breathing, she hears her say, "Look, we can pretend this didn't really happen and I never said any of it. These feelings, they're only fleeting, and I'll get over–"
"Did you ever imagine that perhaps I don't want you to retract anything you've said? What if I don't want all of this to be temporary? That maybe, just maybe... I like you too?" Wednesday replies as they both break free from the intense look of nothing and the smaller girl exhales, forgetting the numbness in her foot and the bloody smears on her face.
She glances down and fumbles with her hands, before letting Enid handle it on her own.
Her hands were like feathers brushing across her, lightly kissing her skin with a hint of coldness.
With a sympathetic smile, Enid asks her, "Are you blushing?" Wednesday widens her eyes and says, "As far as I remember, I don't blush." She also tries to hide her face while saying, "It's cold in here and my ankle hurts." Enid lets go of her as she stands up, "Want a hug?" After Wednesday can respond, Enid hugs her and guides Wednesday's head on her abdomen.
She said, "You put your arm around me and my legs literally crumble, pathetic," but she didn't move away while taking pleasure in the warm sunlight striking her soul. "Keep quiet and act as if nothing is happening."
Wednesday nearly believes that this is just an illusion, similar to a children's book fantasy where the characters get whatever they desire. When no one can remember, a broken visions persists in her mind.
The moon has its sun to glow alone during the night, just as the rains have its oceans to send cold water overhead.
Everything requires a cause to collapse, and Wednesday has Enid.
After Wednesday react, "You may stop embracing me now," Enid released her grip and knelt down to Wednesday's height. Once more grinning, Wednesday's acknowledged she want to witness it throughout the duration of humanity.
It was an act meant to shake everyone to their core. There are far too many lights pointing to other people's tiny lives, but none of them matter when her own universe and life are staring at her with overwhelming adoration in her eyes.
Enid whispers, staring at Wednesday's lips, "I really truly want to kiss you right now." Wednesday says in a rush, "Permission given." Enid draws in to close the distance between them.
It was brief when Enid stepped back and neither of them uttered a word. "It was terrible sor-" Wednesday ends the sentence by squeezing Enid's lips together. She needs to enjoy the lips she had been wanting to taste while closing her eyes. As she anticipated, it was more sweet and velvety. Of course, it was not a good idea to become hooked to it, but she found a pleasure in gripping Enid's neck and tracing the mole under her jaw.
Being in the midst of the galaxy and meeting all the stars is not as horrible as it sounds. Once all life on this mortal world has vanished, she will crash her moon into the sun.
Enid broke the kiss and laughed at Wednesday, "You're so dumb," as she fixed her bangs. "Shut up before I shoot a bullet in your skull." Wednesday responded, and Enid just rolled her eyes and kissed Wednesday's forehead.
"You sound sleepy, I remember you got like one and a half hours of sleep last night." Wednesday frowns and asks, "When?" Enid stands up and extends her hand, saying, "Dear God, go to rest, you have a broken ankle." Wednesday just ignores her and continues to sip her coffee as if nothing has happened.
"Stop snoring Enid." As Enid hug her waist and burying her face on her neck, cuddling comfortably.
