Notes:

I initially had this as a genderbent AU, but my last one didn't do so hot, so I'm just doing it normal lol.

Work Text:

It wasn't that Luz didn't have any skills or hobbies; it was that they weren't exactly what most people considered 'normal.' She was afraid of the judgement of her peers. That was why she decided against performing at the school's talent show. The kids at his previous school had seen to her never really expressing herself to strangers ever again. She'd simply gotten humiliated and made fun of one too many times. Her self-esteem just wasn't there.

Though, that wouldn't stop her from attending the talent show as a guest and supporting the performances of her friends. She'd even managed to get to the auditorium early enough to get front-row seats. Her friends would know she was there for them, even if she had to embarrass them from her seat. Or more specifically, Gus.

Only two of her friends would be going on stage to showcase what they could do. Gus, who had an entire comedy act planned out; and then Amity, her crush, who would be singing. She never elaborated on what exactly she'd be singing, so Luz was completely in the dark. That made it all the more exciting, though. Especially since she'd discovered Amity's secret life as her favorite online cover artist. It had been a great day when Luz had figured that out.

Finally, however, the talent show started. Luz eagerly sat forward in her seat, as did Willow. Hunter just rolled his eyes at them, but she could see the smile on his face from a mile away. He was just as excited as they were.

They didn't really know the order of the performance line-ups, but they were pumped regardless as Principal Bump walked up onto the stage and encourages all the students to make some noise. And once the roaring cheers of the crowd had subsided, Bump announced the first performance.

Opening the show would be a shorter girl in Luz's grade, her larger-than-average nose being her most defining feature. Tinella Nosa, who Luz didn't actually know the name of until just a couple of weeks prior. Not that it was her fault when the whole school only ever referred to her as 'Tiny Nose.' Luz didn't even know why since she didn't join this school until a couple months into the school year. But she just shrugged it off.

From there, the performances went by pretty quickly. Some people did more mundane things, like juggling. Others sang like Amity would be doing. Though, Luz couldn't help but be impressed by the kid who juggled six bowling pins from different angles during his performance. That had been pretty cool.

"When's Gus going on?" Willow asked quietly between performances. "I'm really excited to see his act!"

"You said it, captain," Hunter agreed with a smile. "It's like waiting for your younger sibling to make his debut."

"What about you, Luz?" Willow asked her.

"No offense to Gus," Lu replied. "But I'm looking forward to Amity's singing to most."

"That's gay," Hunter smirked.

Luz just pouted at him, her cheeks pink as she grumbled under her breath. She wanted to retort in a funny way, maybe correcting him in a sassy way that she was actually bisexual, but she didn't want any playful banter to accidentally interrupt any of the performers. They were in the front row, after all.

It was a few more students later that it was finally Gus's turn to take the stage. And he killed it from the very start. He had the entire audience crying in laughter.

He told recounts of some more recent encounters he'd had with strangers at different stores, giving the crowd what his inner dialogue was like during the interactions. Some of these stories Luz had recognized because she'd been there. The quick clap-backs at the rude people had some people cracking up so hard that they couldn't breathe. And one of the best parts was the near flawless transitions from one story to the next.

By the end of Gus' performance, Luz was so laughed out that she was slumped lazily in her seat. Her ribs hurt from how hard she'd been laughing, but it was all worth it. She was finally able to relax and catch her breath as Gus thanked the crowd while he made his way off stage. And eventually, when the rest of the crowd had calmed down, Bump made his way back up to the mic, saying a few words of his own before moving on with the show.

"Now, we have one last performance for you tonight, folks," Bump said to the crowd. "She's decided to give a few words of her own before she begins. So, without further ado, please welcome to the stage, Amity Blight!"

Bump made his way off the stage as Amity made her way on to take his place. At first, she seemed incredibly confident as she walked up to the microphone. But she and Luz locked eyes for a moment, and it was clear that she tensed up. She almost seemed to forget what she was doing, but Luz was quick to give her a thumbs up, bringing her back from whatever internal struggle she seemed to be having.

"Most of you may know me as someone who sings only for myself," Amity spoke into the mic. "However, tonight I will be singing for...or rather, to, someone in the crowd."

Luz could've sworn her crush's eyes flicked down in her direction, which made the Latina girl blush. She looked to Willow and Hunter, who smirked knowingly at her. Were they in on something that Luz wasn't aware of? Amity's voice brought Luz's attention back from her thoughts before she could dwell on it very long.

"I hope you all enjoy," Amity added to her small little speech.

As the music began to play over the auditorium's speakers, Luz quickly recognized the song as one of her recent favorites. She couldn't help but grasp onto the arms of her chair as Amity began to sing.

"I've been hearin' symphonies;

Before, all I heard was silence.

A rhapsody for you and me,

And every Melody is timeless.

Life was stringin' me along,

Then you came and you cut me loose.

Was solo singin' on my own;

Now I can't find the key without you."

At this point, the song began to pick up a little traction as Amity continued to sing.

"And now your song is on repeat

And I'm dancin' on to your heartbeat.

And when you're gone, I feel incomplete,

So if you want the truth..."

The song had reached its main chorus as the drums finally entered the mix, sending pleasant chills down Luz's spine.

"I just wanna be part of your symphony~

Will you hold me tight and not let go?

Symphony~

Like a love song on the radio;

Will you hold me tight and not let go?"

It was then that Luz noticed that Amity had squeezed her eyes shut, her face flushed as she'd sung the chorus. But as the next lines came out of her mouth, her eyes opened back up, staring timidly at the floor of the stage as she gripped the microphone.

"I'm sorry if it's all too much;

Every day you're here, I'm healin'.

And I was runnin' outta luck;

I never thought I'd find this feelin'

'Cause I've been hearin' symphonies;

Before, all I heard was silence.

A rhapsody for you and me~

And every melody is timeless.

And now your song is on repeat

And I'm dancin' on to your heartbeat.

And when you're gone, I feel incomplete,

So if you want the truth..."

Luz wanted so badly to go up onto the stage and join her, or even straight up kiss her, not caring what the other students in the auditorium thought about it.

"I just wanna be part of your symphony~

Will you hold me tight and not let go?

Symphony~

Like a love song on the radio;

Will you hold me tight and not let go?"

It was the point in the song where it was mostly instrumental aside from some minor vocalizations. And Luz didn't miss that Amity was now looking right at her as the song went on. Her heart fluttered, her cheeks flushed, and her eyes widened in awe. Amity had become much more confident now.

"And now your song is on repeat

And I'm dancin' on to your heartbeat.

And when you're gone, I feel incomplete,

So if you want the truth..."

Amity took a confident step forward, any nerves from before seemingly gone as she continued to sing.

"I just wanna be part of your symphony~

Will you hold me tight and not let go?

Symphony~

Like a love song on the radio~

Symphony~

Will you hold me tight and not let go?

Symphony~

Like a love song on the radio;

Will you hold me tight and not let go?"

The last noted of the song played, the crowd erupting into cheers, and by the end, Amity was clearly out of breath. Likely because of her nerves before the confidence had set back in. But now that the song was over, those same nerves seemed to resurface, causing her to rush off the stage.

Luz didn't even wait for the cheering to taper off, or for Principal Bump to come back up onto the stage. Instead, she shot up from her chair and rushed out of one of the auditorium's side doors. She didn't immediately see Amity, but when she locked her panicked eyes with Gus, he pointed her in the direction to a pair of glass doors that led outside.

Damn, that Blight was fast when she was nervous.

She quickly caught up to Amity, however, the other girl seemingly trying to flee the school ground altogether. Luz firmly, but gently, grasped her crush's wrist, causing her to pause with a gasp, her body tense.

"Amity, wait," Luz said. "That...that song; it was for me, right?"

"I..." Amity's voice was shaky. "It was stupid...you probably don't even feel the same way."

"Amity, look at me," Luz replied softly, getting some hesitation from the other girl. "Por favor, para mi?"

After another moment of hesitation, Amity finally turned around. The sight broke Luz's heart. Amity's eyes were squeezed shut, tears threatening to spill over, as if she was fully expecting to be rejected. The other girl's mouth opened to speak, but Luz didn't give her a chance to say anything.

Luz carefully pulled Amity into herself, causing the other girl to yelp in surprise. And Luz spared no time in leaning in a little closer, using one hand lift Amity's chin a little, placing her lips to the youngest Blight's.

She heard Amity's gasp and felt her body tense against her own. But it only took seconds for Amity to melt into the kiss, her hands grasping at the front of Luz's shirt. It was absolute bliss, and felt like it lasted an eternity. Though, in reality, it was under a minute. And once it was over, Amity buried her face in the crook of Luz's neck as the Latina held her close.

"I love it," Luz said softly. "I loved every part of your performance."

"You...you really mean it?" Amity asked her, her voice shaking a little.

"I do," Luz replied.

"Did...did you also mean...?" Amity's grip on the front of her shirt became a little tighter.

"Mirame, mi dulce," Luz requested softly.

Amity looked up at her slowly, her face flushed from the nickname Luz had used. Her eyes were beginning to tear up again, but Luz raised her hands up, gently cupping the other girl's cheeks. She used her thumbs to wipe the tears away before they could fall. The Latina could look into Amity's amber eyes for hours.

"Luz?" Amity asked shyly.

But instead of words, Luz leaned in and placed another kiss on her crush's lips. And this time, there was no surprised reaction from Amity. She instead immediately returned the kiss. Luz used one hand to run her fingers through Amity's recently dyed lavender locks. The youngest Blight sighed, humming into the kiss. This one lasted longer than the last, getting slightly more heated as well. And when they finally broke away, both were out of breath as they pressed their foreheads together, basking in the moment.

"Luz...that was..." Amity tried to speak.

"Te amo, Amity," Luz interrupted, causing Amity to gasp.

Breaking away to properly look Luz in the eyes, the Latina didn't miss the shocked, but hopeful, look on her face. Amity's cheeks were a bright shade of pink, her eyes wide as tears began to well up in them again.

"You...you love me?" She asked.

"More than anything," Luz replied easily.

"I...I love you too," Amity smiled. "More than anything."
