Baby It's Cold Outside

Summary:

When the students of Nevermore are told to remain jn their rooms during a blizzard, it causes Wednesday to admit something she didn't expect to.

Notes:

So I haven't written a fic in literally months so this probably won't be the best quality, but I just had to write something cause these two have got me in the feels.

Note- I've edited the last few paragraphs of this chapter to make the dynamic more in-character so if anyone is rereading this chapter and is confused that might be why lmao

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Storm in My Heart

Chapter Text

It had only been a week into the new semester when Nevermore's picturesque grounds had been coated with a thick layer of snow as a fierce blizzard raged on.

Classes had been cancelled for the day as the new principal deemed it too unsafe to travel across campus after a Faceless boy slipped on the ice and broke his arm and the harsh wind shattered a classroom window. So all Nevermore students were told to stay within their dormitories until the blizzard calmed down.

Normally, Wednesday loved the atrocious weather. The bitter cold and harsh winds freezing her skin and making it painful to even move. It was blissful agony to her.

However, with everyone being restricted to staying in their rooms Wednesday was being deprived of the opportunity to embrace the cold and instead had no choice but to try and make the most of her time stuck indoors.

Wednesday had been sat at her typewriter most of the morning and was trying to be productive by working on the next chapter of her book but just as she was about to describe Viper's latest gruesome kill, she felt her hands stiffen as the sound of kpop floated across the room.

Breathing deeply though her nose, Wednesday tried to regain focus and continued to write about the impalement of Viper's enemy in graphic detail. But it was hard to write about the torture of another whilst Wednesday was going through something so torturous herself.

Wednesday was running out of patience.

"Enid? Would you turn that cacophony you call music down,? It's making my ears bleed." Wednesday spoke bluntly, her back still towards her roommate as she stared at the half-filled paper in front of her.

After waiting a few moments, Wednesday realised that the volume had not changed and she could feel her temper rising.

The desk chair squeaked loudly as Wednesday spun around to glare at blonde.

Enid seemed to be none the wiser as she lay on her bed with her pink cat-ear headphones on, eyes closed as her hands swaying in the air slightly as though she was conducting an imaginary orchestra.

"Enid." Wednesday said through gritted teeth, her voice slightly raised.

Still, no reaction.

Wednesday contemplated throwing one of her signature knives at the girl to get Enid's attention, but she already knew that idea would not be well received.

Enid had gotten very upset the last time she did such a thing with Ajax when he wouldn't stop incessantly talking about a stupid film he and Enid had seen that day, and Wednesday knew it wasn't worth another lecture about how 'friends don't throw knives at each other.'

A completely ridiculous notion in Wednesday's opinion, especially since she didn't really consider the Gorgon boy a friend but Enid has been quite insistent on the matter so Wednesday agreed to try and be 'slightly' less violent when she had an issue with someone.

Wednesday wasn't sure why she listened to the werewolf girl, but had found that she didn't have the willpower to go against her wishes. In the end it was of no matter of couse, as it just meant that she'd have to wait to do some extra target practice with Pugsley next time the family came to visit.

So with a silent huff, Wednesday rose from her chair and crossed over to the colourful side of the room and stood hovering next to her roommate with her arms folded tightly across her chest.

It only took a few seconds for Enid to open her eyes as she sensed the girl's approach.

"What's up roomie?" The blonde was rather chipper as she pulled her headphones down to hang around her neck, completely unaware of what was bothering the ravenette.

Wednesday glared down at the girl, "Your so-called music is interrupting my writing time. I can barely hear the screaming in my head."

Enid rolled her eyes as paused her song and moved to sit cross-legged on her bed, "You've been writing all morning though and there's a new album I want to listen to. I've been quiet as a mouse so you could work and I even snuck out and tried going to the common room for a bit after you said I was 'breathing too loudly.' It was freezing down there by the way."

Enid shivered as she remembered how the temperature dropped once she left their room.

"You did sound like an asthmatic mule." Wednesday replied.

Now it was Enid's turn to glare.

Wednesday couldn't feel less intimidated if she tried, but to see the blonde looking at her with distain caused a pang of regret. Although Wednesday would rather chalk the feeling up to merely being indigestion.

"Wouldn't you be more content going to Yoko's? That way I can get some peace and you can listen to that catterwalling in her room" Wednesday reasoned.

Enid shook her head at the idea.

"Well firstly Yoko's dorm is across the quad and I'd rather not go out in the blizzard and get frostbite. And secondly, Yoko already told me she's made an agreement with her roommate and sneaked Divina into her room and I don't want to be a third wheel."

"Third wheel?" Wednesday had a curious tone in her voice.

Enid laughed a little at the girl's confusion. It wasn't often that Wednesday didn't know something but modern-day slang was definitely not her forte.

"It's when someone is awkwardly hanging around with two people who a couple." Enid explained.

"I see."

Wednesday contemplated for a moment.

"So I would be a third wheel when I'm with you and Ajax?"

Now that wasn't where Enid thought the conversation was going to go.

"Not anymore." Enid spoke quietly.

Wednesday raised an eyebrow at the girl in front of her.

"We broke up." Enid said simply.

A wave of irritation coursed through Wednesday at that. How could Ajax part from a girl such as Enid? The werewolf was far out of his league in the first place and Wednesday couldn't fathom a reason why anyone could stand to lose her like that.

"There's two hundred and six bones in the human body. Which ones of his shall I fracture?" Wednesday was already considering which weapon would be the most effective at snapping bone. Her mace perhaps? No, she had left that back at the Manor for Lurch to polish.

Enid's eyes bulged at the thought of Wednesday hunting down the Gorgon boy.

"Woah, it's fine Wednesday! No need to break any bones." Enid laughed awkwardly.

"It was actually my decision to break up. I ended things last week." Enid admitted.

Wednesday felt a flutter in her stomach that she hadn't felt before. Perhaps it was just disappointment from not being able to maim anyone? It had been sometime since she had caused anyone bodily harm.

"Oh." Wednesday muttered before thinking and her posture relaxed slightly. Normally she was more articulate with her responses so she kicked herself mentally for the slip up.

Enid took her roommates unresponsiveness as a sign to continue.

"Well after we got sent home early last semester, I realised that I didn't actually miss being away from Ajax. He would message me and it almost felt like chore having to respond to his dumb memes."

Wednesday was unsure of what this 'meme' thing was but given the context she reasoned that it was another slang term.

Enid became more animated as she explained herself, her arms moving as she spoke before she swung her legs over the side of the bed so she now sat upright.

"Like don't get me wrong, he's nice and all but if you don't miss the person you're with when you're apart, then you're probably not meant to be together. And it just wasn't Ajax that I was missing. Does that make sense?" Enid rambled as she stared up at her roommate, hoping that somehow her unspoken message might get across.

"I think that's the most sense you've made since I met you Sinclair." Wednesday said bluntly.

Enid snorted at that.

"Gee, thanks." Enid looked down and picked at a non-existent thread on the hem of her brightly coloured jumper.

Wednesday could sense that her shut down in response to Enid's rant might not have been the right thing to say. Wednesday would just have to try again.

"It does make logical sense though. Just going by the disgusting observations of my own parents, they can't stand to be apart for mere moments let alone two months." Wednesday reasoned, hoping that it was a good enough response.

"Exactly!" Enid exclaimed.

So it had been an appropriate response, Wednesday noted.

"I knew it was the right thing to do by ending it and it was best doing it before we started for the semester. It gave Ajax time to process things I think. From what I heard, he's already getting with one of the second year fangs. So clearly he's handling it well."

"Evidently."

Enid spoke with a little bitterness at the thought of someone moving on so quickly but deep down she was relieved that he wasn't too heartbroken. Enid always hated it when people were upset.

"So if you aren't able to go elsewhere in fear of being a 'third wheel' as you said before, then I have no choice but to allow you to remain here." Wednesday surmised, changing the subject as she headed back towards her side of the room.

"Wow, you're allowing me to stay in my own room? How generous of you Addams." Enid smirked.

"I can always banish you to the balcony if you'd prefer." Wednesday snarked back, although the words had no real bite to them.

"You wouldn't do that. You'd miss my company too much." Enid laughed as she rose from her bed to put her phone on charge.

Wednesday froze for a moment as she was suddenly confronted with the realisation that the blonde was right.

She would miss her company. She had done everyday for the past two months.

"You're right, you know." Wednesday spoke quietly as she aligned the pens on her desk.

"About what?" Enid asked, sounding a little lost.

Wednesday didn't turn around to face the girl. She didn't think she could bare it just yet.

"I- I must admit that your presence was somewhat unexpectedly sought after during the break." Wednesday admitted, cursing the way she stumbled over her words.

Enid smiled to herself as her roommate's words sunk in.

"Is that the Wednesday way of saying you missed me over the break?" Enid teased as she stared in Wednesday's direction.

Wednesday thought for a moment before responding.

"If that's how you choose to interpret my words then so be it." Wednesday tried to sound as nonchalant as possible but inside her heart was still racing.

"Well in that case maybe I sought after your presence too.' Enid replied causing Wednesday to feel as though her heart would beat straight out of her chest as she recalled Enid's earlier conversation.

"You feeling okay there Wednesday? Your heart rate and temperature are way up. You're not feeling ill, are you?" Enid asked, trying to sound innocent as she teased the girl in front of her.

Wednesday wasn't sure what spurred her on to admit her emotions but now that she had, she felt as though she needed to regain some control.

Taking a breath to calm herself, Wednesday turned to face her roommate once again.

"I'm afraid you must be mistaken. My heart is as cold and dark as an artic chasm." Wednesday retorted blankly, trying to hide any emotion.

Enid took a few slow steps until she was within arms length.

"No, you see my hearing has gotten way better since transforming and right now it sounds like you've got a brass band in there. What's got you so worked up?" Enid smirked as she stared into almost black eyes.

Wednesday opened and closed her mouth, unable to respond as she felt her face flush.

The sight caused Enid to start giggling a little which did nothing to help Wednesday's beating heart.

"And people say I'm the mean one." Wednesday grumbled as Enid's laughs died down.

"I'm not being mean. I just think it's sweet how much you care but then you are too proud to show it." Enid smiled as she explained.

"I'm not sweet, Enid." Wednesday scowled at the implication, she had worked her whole life to avoid descriptions such as that. And Enid just wrecked that work in one fell swoop.

"You are deep down, it just takes a while to get to see it. Like a sour patch kid."

"Excuse me?" Wednesday questioned.

Enid smiled, "You know, sour on the outside but then all sweet on the inside?"

Wednesday stared at the blonde as though she had two heads. Although Wednesday would never judge if she did, as she never minded the Amor twins when they'd visit the Mansion.

"That may be the worst metaphor I've heard in my life."

Enid giggled again, "That's a shame, cause I really like sour patch kids."

An idea suddenly popped into Enid's head. It could go disastrously wrong if she was misinterpreting things but it was a risk worth taking in the blonde's opinion.

"You know, I think the cinema in town sells sour patch kids." Enid began, feeling a little nervous but trying to sound confident.

"Do they now?" Wednesday asked, an eyebrow raised.

"Maybe we could go and buy some and watch something whilst we are there?" Enid suggested, hoping that the implication was clear to see.

Whilst the notion of going to the cinema was rather mundane activity to suggest to the Addams girl and Enid knew it wasn't something she'd do by choice, Enid had always enjoyed the traditional date activities.

Wednesday pursed her lips as she considered the offer for a moment.

"That sounds agreeable."

A wave of relief rushed over the blonde and if Enid hadn't been mistaken it almost sounded as though Wednesday sounded lighter in her tone. Happy, even.

"It's a date then." Enid said as she rocked on her feet, the nervous energy getting the best of her.

Wednesday simply nodded curtly.

Enid smiled brightly at her roommate's response as it left no room for misinterpretation now. She had somehow done the impossible.

Enid was going to go on a date with Wednesday Addams.

Enid couldn't stop beaming as that fact sunk in and even the ravenette struggled to suppress the tug at of the corners of her mouth as she witnessed the joy the blonde was feeling.

Perhaps being stuck inside during a blizzard wasn't so bad after all, Wednesday silently admitted to herself as images of sitting next to the blonde in a darkened cinema flashed through her mind. It all sounded rather domestic but somehow it felt comforting at the same time, and for once Wednesday began to understand why her parents acted they way they did with each other.

Enid's smile morphed into a smirk as she gestured to the headphones still hanging around her neck, pulling Wednesday from her thoughts and back to reality.

"So can I like go back to listening to my music now? I'm afraid I need to something to distract me from the sound of a very loud heartbeat and I need to concentrate to the lyrics."

The half-smile was wiped from Wednesday's face as her lips pursed tightly at Enid's words.

"Well played Sinclair. Well played."  Wednesday couldn't help but feel a little proud of Enid's mockery of her behaviour earlier. The comment was a little underhand and that's what made the barb even more delightful to hear.

Well, two could play at that game.

"So you want a distraction, Sinclair?" Wednesday asked, a rare twinkle of mischief in her eyes.

Before Enid had a chance to question the girl's words, Wednesday had leaned in and was pulling the Enid towards herself by her headphones.

Enid let out a squeak of surprise as she felt her lips meet Wednesday's. The kiss was even more gentle than Enid had expected but it still made her head spin with excitement.

After a few moments Wednesday pulled back and released her from her grasp with a smirk plastered on her face.

"Well how was that for a distraction?"
