The Sound of Silence

Summary:

Adam knew Hailey was serious. Knew her reasons for insisting that Jay be accompanied, even just to the dentist, were legitimate. He'd still expected to be eating Thai food right now.

Notes:

ididitjustforthis suggested the dentist what feels like forever ago.
I had some trouble figuring out a story for it though because as health care adjacent, the dentist is the last place Hailey would trust with her trouble magnet husband.
And then I considered, what if that was half the problem?
Hope you enjoy and sorry it took so long!

Chapter Text

Usually a semi-annual teeth cleaning doesn’t dredge up as much drama as Jay’s do. Ever since the worst string of bad luck the world has ever seen started, Hailey has insisted not only on coming with him but on being in the room.

The dentist they see had been resistant at first but eventually it had been easier to give in. They found a reasonably out of the way corner and allow her to stand there, propped against the wall while the dental hygienist works on his teeth.

It’s weird but its not the weirdest thing they’ve done in an attempt to counteract his curse so he rolls with it.

Until the time that Hailey and Voight end up on the docket for a major court case on the same day that his dental cleaning has been scheduled for almost six months.

“We’ll just have to reschedule it.” Hailey says as they stand in the break room.

“Come on, Hailey.” Jay whines. “I’ve had like… six, seven cleanings with them since this nonsense started. Nothing has happened yet.”

“We’ve seen time and time again that all it takes is one new employee.” Hailey insists.

“What if I go with him?” Adam offers as he steps into the room, eyes on a cup of coffee for himself.

“No way.” Jay protests. “This is ridiculous.”

“Is it?” Hailey challenges, eyes slightly crazed.

“I…” Jay tries to argue but he can’t.

Somehow even overkill isn’t always enough.

“Fine.” he grumbles. “Adam can come with me to the dentist and I’ll buy him lunch on the way back as a thank you.”

“I like Thai food.” Adam chimes in, taking the mug Jay hands him.

“Thank you, Adam.” Hailey says, “I really appreciate it.”

“I’m just thinking of myself here.” Adam jokes, “Every time this guy goes missing, I end up with a whole bunch of extra overtime.”

Jay sticks his tongue out but he can’t argue with that either, he really does owe his team a lot for the amount of time they’ve spent looking for him over the last couple of years.

The next afternoon he walks into the dental office, greeting the receptionist.

“Mrs. Halstead couldn’t join us today?” she asks brightly.

“Hailey’s in court.” Jay says, “So I had to bring a different bodyguard.”

Adam waves from behind him.

“Well, I’m sure they’ll be delighted to have you.” she says, “Let’s get you back. Still no fluoride treatment today?”

Jay makes a face and she chuckles.

He gets settled in the chair and Adam takes up his perch in the corner, pulling out his phone to scroll through social media.

He’s dividing his attention between the screen and Jay and doesn’t even notice the cabinet door behind him opening until the cold metal of a gun barrel settles against the side of his head.

He manages to shoot off a blank Facebook message to Kim before his phone is knocked to the floor.

Jay half sits up as the hygienist lets out a frightened squeak.

“Don’t.” a voice behind Adam growls and Jay sits back.

“What do you want?” Jay asks and Adam feels a flash of anger at how resigned his friend sounds.

“Revenge.” the man says with a scowl. “Empty your pockets.”

Jay takes out his wallet, keys, and phone, setting them on the tray.

“Take off your jacket.”

He takes off the jacket, reluctantly dropping it to the floor. Another man steps into the room, pulling Jay’s hands together and winding rope around and between his wrists.

Leaving him sitting there, the man searches Adam’s pockets, removing his keys and wallet. A metal detector wand is run over both of them and their belts and Jay’s boots are also taken.

The man holding Adam pushes him forward a few inches so his partner can cuff his hands behind his back. Then the two are taken out of the building past horrified staff and loaded into the back of a dark blue van.

They can hear the sirens as the van pulls away and exchange eye contact. Jay still looks more annoyed than scared and Adam feels another spike of anger.

They sit quietly against the wall of the van as they drive, ignoring the man sitting across from them, holding a gun steady in their direction.

Jay can only manage that for so long though and soon enough, he’s glaring at the man.

“So what exactly are you avenging?” he asks.

“I was expecting your wife.” the man says, looking peeved, “She ruined a massive deal for us, lost me a lot of money.”

“Well, that sucks for you.” Jay says.

“She may not get to watch it firsthand but losing her husband will still hurt her. And while we were planning to come back for our friend Adam later, force him to watch someone else be hurt. Well, I’m sure that seeing you suffer will be almost as painful for him.”

“If you’re angry at me, take it out on me.” Adam growls, struggling up to his knees.

“Sit your ass back down.” the man growls.

“Leave him out of this.” Adam insists, trying to edge over in front of Jay.

The man slams the butt of his gun into the side of Adam’s head, sending him flying toward the front of the van. As he struggles to lift himself back up he hears a loud curse and turns to see Jay with a gun to his head.

“Sit. your. ass. down.” the man growls angrily.

Adam manages to right himself, settling back against the side of the van.

They’re in trouble.
