Hatterene

Summary:

Bebe contemplates releasing his starter.

Work Text:

Being in the orphanage had sucked. Rose endorsing him was supposed to be his way out and that had sucked too. Now some weird old lady had taken him in. Bede didn’t know how to feel. Opal was caring, eccentric, and terrifying all at once. Since Bede was going to be a fairy type gym leader, he was only supposed to use fairy types. Opal suggested he put his non fairy pokemon in the PC, but he had decided to release them instead. He had only caught them to win the league anyways. He hoped they would be happier out in the wild. He stood there in Glimwood Tangle for hours holding the pokeball in his hand. The pokemon contained in the pokeball was one he could keep with him as it was a fairy type but Bede wasn’t sure if keeping her was what he wanted. Haterene had been gifted to him by Rose when she was only a Hatenna. Unsurprisingly, Bede hated Rose. Part of him wanted to release her so she could live her best life in the wild. Part of him wanted to release her so he could forget all about Rose. But another part of him acknowledged that Hatterene would be unhappy without him. He had been with Haterene for years. It wasn’t Hatterene’s fault Bede associated her with Rose. Would it be selfish for Bede to abandon her like that? Bede had told Opal about his plan to release his pokemon and she had given him an extra day to say goodbye but she made it clear what time he had to be back. Bede pulled out his Rotom Phone. Since the sun doesn’t reach Glimwood Tangle much anyways, he hadn’t even noticed how late it was. “Opal’s probably waiting for me,” Bede thought to himself, still holding the pokeball out. Bede sighed. It just didn’t feel right to make Hatterene suffer over something she couldn’t control. Bede let Haterene out of her pokeball. A red light flashed out of the sphere and before him was Hatterene. He immediately knew he had made the right choice. Bede hugged her. Her fluffy fur warmed Bede’s skin. (he wasn’t used to the short sleeves and shorts of the Fairy uniform) “I love you” Bede whispered. Hatterene was confused but accepted the hug. She knew how much Bede had gone through and planned to stay with him til the very end. Bede didn’t put Hatterene back into her pokeball. He wanted to enjoy her presence a little longer. Together, they walked back to Ballonlea. Although at first the twisting paths had been hard to navigate, Bede had been growing used to them and it hadn’t taken him long to find his way back to the gym. Bede smiled. Of course he smiled. He loved Hatterene, he loved Opal, and he loved Ballonlea. He was so happy he’d forgotten that he was late coming back. That’s alright though; Opal was happy to remind him as she stood outside the gym. A smile so terrifying it could easily make Giratina cry was stretched across her face.
