We Don’t Talk About Link

Summary:

Gathered together one night, Time asks the others how they knew where to find him, since everyone refuses to talk about him. So using Sky's gift, they show him and listen to a great song at the same time.

This is an Au of Linked Universe where each of the Link’s have one of the Madrigal's powers. Sky, rather than being like Mirabel, got the gift to view the past so long as it's a song. Reading the first work in this series is a good idea, but reading this tells you generally what you need to know.

Work Text:

The group was setting up camp, Wild cooking by the fire while Warriors nursed a black eye, Legend teasing him for it as he took away his mirror shield.

"I'm not a Narcissist!" Warriors growled. The group never raised their voice to express anger at Legend, but did find plenty of other ways to make it clear how they felt.

Hyrule, Wind, Sky, and Twilight were setting up their sleeping conditions for the night when a cloud appeared over Wind's head.

When Wind didn't say anything about it, they ignored it after no more than a glance. The group decided without discussion to treat Wind the same as they would as if he didn't bring weather along with his mood. So only when Wind let an audible sigh did Sky say anything. "Wind? Are you alright?"

Wind ran his hands through his hair, taking a deep breath that seceded in lightening the cloud, but it was still grey. "I can't find my sister's telescope." He continued to look in the bag. "I know it's in here somewhere."

"I think I saw you wrap it in a spare shirt," Four offered, not looking up from sharpening the Four Sword.

"A ha!" Wind declared, clouds imediendly disappearing as he held the scope up triumphantly. "Thanks Four!"

Four gave a salute with a smile.

"Explain how your magic works in relation to the slate again," Hyrule asked as Wild crushed some herbs in a grinder.

"When someone eats what I make it heals them as new." Wild responded, ever patient. "Normally the magic will last to full effect the whole day, but the slate makes it so it lasts five. And after that it can still heal scrapes, bumps, or bruises for another couple of weeks. Other than the magic, a food put in the slate comes out exactly how it goes in. If I were to bake a pie, I would let it cool before I put it in so it would be ready to eat once it came out. Does that make more sense?"

Hyrule shrugged. "I guess?"

"I have been curious," Time said. "Sky." Sky hummed in acnologment looking up. "Everyone treats our name like it'll bring them bad luck in my Hyrule, and yet you all were able to find out about me within a day. Would you mind using your gift to show me?"

Sky froze while the rest looked interested. They all used their gifts for the group's advantage. Mainly Legend hearing monsters before they were ambushed or even just finding civilization, Hyrule effortlessly moving boulders out of the way of a path, and Warriors experimenting with all plants non floral, yet after a week they have yet to see Sky use his gift. Not like they had a reason till now.

Sky stutterd for a moment before saying, "O-okay. I will need to warn you, it only ever shows with a song and I don't have control over how much is shown. Only what the topic and time of the song is."

"That's alright," Time said with a smile. "There’s nothing they would have said I haven't heard before."

With the group coming to sit around the fire, Sky nodded and focused for a few breaths before making the biggest circle he could with his finger, showing them the past.

Wind was talking to a married couple, the girl trying to shush him, while the man insisted Wind needed to know, then, the woman began to sing.

"We don't talk about Link no no no no

The Husband surrendered before taking his wife in his arms as if to lead her through a dance.

"We don't talk about Link here
But!"

They faced Wind, in a dance, and before they knew it, they were looking even further in the past on the couple's wedding day, showing the events they described. The wife singing and the husband singing a line every once in awhile. She seemed to get increasingly more irritated the more he "interrupted" her.

"It was my wedding day
(It was our wedding day)
We were getting ready
And there wasn't a cloud in the sky
(No clouds allowed in the sky)
Link then walks in with a mischievous grin
(Thunder)"

The Sunny day turned into a storm and the wife got mad, walking away, only for the husband to pull her back in to finish their dance.

"Are you telling this story or am I?
(I'm sorry my life go on)
Link told us it looks like rain
(Why did he tell us?)
Song of Storms from out his brain
(Someone go get the umbrellas)
Married in a hurricane
(What a joyous day but anyway)

The two sang together, as if trying to warn the listening Wind.

"We don't talk about Link no no no no
We don't talk about Link here"

The scene changed and it showed Legend sitting there before he pirked up at the sound of someone saying,

"Hey!
Grew to live in fear of Link stuttering or stumbling
I can always hear him sort of muttering and mumbling
I associate him with the sound of falling sand

Sh, sh, sh

It's a heavy lift with a gift so humbling
Always left the royals and my family fumbling
Grappling with prophecies they couldn't understand
Do you understand?"

It cut to Four, listening to someone who looked to be a teenager give a very… disturbing description of him.

"Seven foot frame
Rats along his back
When he calls your name
It all fades to black

Yeah he sees your dreams
And feasts on your screams"

It showed images of who sang so far as they sang together and they got their first glimpse of the one who spoke to Legend. A young youth with a long blond braid wearing Sheikah clothing with their face obscured by a white cloth.

"We don't talk about Link
No no no no
We don't talk about Link here."

The circle showed as they all talked to villagers, each distraught about their predictions. First Twilight.

"He told me my fish would die
The next day, dead!"

Wild.

"Told me I'd grow a gut
And just like he said!"

Warriors.

"He said that all my hair would disappear
Now look at my head!"

Sky was surrounded by older teenagers.

"Your fate is sealed when your prophecy is read!"

They were now further in the past, and they saw Warriors. Scarf smaller, clearly younger, as he sat with a child dressed in green at some kind of camp. There was a place covered with sand not far away as the boy handed him a glowing green slab of glass with a joyous smile. Warrior's voice was singing.

"He told me that the life of my dreams would be promised and someday be mine."

Warriors smiled at the glass before growing a flower in his hair, causing the boy to laugh. For the next line it changed to show as Warriors and Sky had fun throwing colored powder at each other, surrounded by his imperfect plants.

"He told me that my power would grow
Like the grapes that thrive on the vine"

The princess herself looked over her kingdom, looking sad.

"He told me that the one of my dreams
Would be just out of reach
Betrothed to another
It's like I hear him now"

It showed them all in their hotel room, and Legend sang to them.

"Hey guys. I want not a sound out of you."

As Zelda continued to sing before Legend finished with,

"I can hear him now!"

It went further back to view Hyrule walking, definitely not where he was supposed to be.

"Um, so Link
Yeah about that hero
We really need to know about Link now
Give us the truth and the whole truth Hero!"

Legend heard,

"Hey Mallon, your Husband's here!"
"Time for dinner!"

All the verses were being sung at the same time, making the ones watching dance just a little as it showed Hyrule gathering the pieces of the prophecy. When it was half way done, it showed all the Links, except Time, putting the prophecy together, before Time appeared and placed the last piece.

"Don't talk about Link here"
"Why did they talk about Link here?"
"Don't talk about Link here"
"They never should have brought him up here!"

The circle faded leaving the group looking at Sky. He shrugged. "I will say, the songs aren't usually that catchy."

"Half of those things weren't even prophecies," Time said, massaging his brow. "That lady was over feeding her fish. It was swimming on its side; when I saw it. The one Wild talked to ate three plates every meal. It was inevitable. The priest had a receding hairline, visible by anyone. I just had no social skills."

"Eat," Wild said, handing Warriors the first bowl of stew while simultaneously shoving a piece of bread into his mouth. Once he swallowed the first bite, his black eye faded to nothing. Wild turned to Time, giving him the next bowl. "I can understand when it comes to not having social skills. After I came out of the shrine… you know what? You don't wanna know."

"Wise decision," Twilight said, trying to finish the page in his book before food was given to him.

Wild continued to hand it out as Wind asked Time, "Are you okay? Knowing that people hate your gift so much?" A small cloud appeared above his head. "My gift is looked down on too, but at least when it matters they know I'm willing to help."

Time wrapped an arm around Wind, giving him a squeeze and causing the cloud to lighten. "I'll be fine. Zelda and everyone that matters to me understands my gift. And if I'm ever needed, Zelda knows where to find me."

Conversation was kept light that day, Twilight volunteered for the first watch, and everyone got ready for sleep.

Warriors noticed some clouds still in the distance and lay next to Wind, using the scarf to keep them together. Wind smiled and held the scarf as he drifted off to sleep.
