The Almighty Iron Man: Upgrade

Summary:

Izuku Midoriya, AKA Iron Man returns and is ready for more inventing, kicking ass, and being snarky. With his fairly new group of friends, including a recently forgiven Katsuki Bakugo, Izuku will still have to use his ever-growing knowledge of inventing, and his newly developing quick wit to get out of new and more dangerous situations intact. No matter what, though, his girlfriend and partner in crime, Mei Hatsume will be by his side through all of it.

Sequel to The Almighty Iron Man

Notes:

It is about damn time. 1 year ago today I started The Almighty Iron Man. I hope by the second anniversary I have the fourth installment going, especially considering this part will only have 12-13 chapters. I'm now planning them out by plot coverage, not word count, that's a new development. Hopefully this chapter will bring you back into the world of this story before the next few chapters go through the whole plot thing. This installment will be much more plot-focused than the first one, this is a warning. I hope to give the next one some room for character development of the main characters, but this one will be introducing and escalating threats and even wrapping a couple plot threads from the previous installment while creating more of them. anyway, enough rambling, let's start the show!

Chapter 1: The AI

Chapter Text

Wednesday, June 6th, 3rd day of internships

Iron Man flew through the skies of Hosu, fleeing from a monster called a Nomu. as far as he could tell there were at least four in the area until this one started chasing him, bringing the number up to at least five. He hoped there weren’t more than that. The boy in the armor had a comm system built into his helmet, and a smooth male-sounding voice came from it.

“I’ve analyzed the creature and noticed the frailness of its wings. If you fire a repulsor blast through one, it should fall to the ground, doing substantial damage to it upon landing.”

“Right!” Izuku said, flipping over while still retaining momentum and flight speed in the same direction. He then fired a number of high power repulsor blasts, one of which finally pierced the wing of the Nomu, causing it to fall. Izuku didn’t stay to watch it fall, as there were many heroes around to finish it off. He then scanned the streets of Hosu as he flew. “Dammit, Iida, where are you?” he muttered.

The Almighty Iron Man
Upgrade

Thursday, May 24th, 11 days until Internships

“I am Iron Man,” said Izuku, the last student in 1-A to present their hero name.

“Perfect!” Midnight said, giving her approval.

“Alright,” Aizawa said as he came out of the corner and his sleeping bag. “Now that you’ve come up with your hero names, we can go over internships. Internships will begin in eleven days. On Monday, June fourth, you will be interning with a hero and learning the ropes of some of what real heroism is like. You’ll mostly be observing or providing minor support, but it is a valuable learning experience. Training your quirks, fighting techniques and rescue skills are very important, but hands-on experience is important as well.” Midnight had at some point left the room without anyone noticing.

“So with that said, you probably know that doing well in the festival gets you internship offers. Not everyone gets an offer, but everyone will be interning with a hero. We’ve teamed with over forty Hero Agencies to make sure of that. Now, here are the offers.”

Izuku Midoriya - 8,656

Shoto Todoroki - 7,938

Katsuki Bakugo - 7,375

Mina Ashido - 5,395

Uraraka Ochako - 5,274

Kyoka Jiro - 2,053

Eijiro Kirishima - 453

“Whoa!” said a bunch of students.

“As you can see, the format of this year’s first-year festival was a resounding success. More of you got offers in the thousands than any first-year class in UA’s history. Meanwhile, most of the rest of you got at least one offer, except for a select few. Now, as I’ve said, you will all be going on internships. So, those with offers, come up and get your stacks of paper, for those without, we’ll give you an internship which we’ll inform you of by the end of next week. After taking your offers, you have until Friday of next week to choose.

“Well, shit,” said Katsuki. “I wanted a lot, but this is fucking ridiculous.”

“Well, you did make it to the final event. Only eight people did that. And you had some awesome fights!” Kirishima said. “But yeah, I think I’d drown in that many offers. I’m having enough trouble with mine!”

“How the hell did I get so many?!” Jiro asked no one in particular.

“Jiro, you made it to the final event.”

“I was carried!”

“No, Jiro, you earned it.” Most of 1-A stared at Katsuki after he said that, but he was going through his offers, either not noticing the stares or not caring.

“Anyone gonna address the fact that Bakugo just stood up for someone?” Kaminari asked Mineta.

“Look, I’m just waiting to make sure he’s stopped screaming.”

“I forgot to say this, but Nedzu had ordered the construction of dorms that anyone can request the use of, and if you choose to do so, you can move in starting the Sunday after internships,” Aizawa informed them. After a little while, Izuku clapped loudly.

“Well, if that’s all of the announcements, does anyone want to come to my and Mei’s workshop? We can help each other pick out internships and we’re presenting a big new invention to Dean Nedzu and Mei would be thrilled to have more of an audience.”

Eventually, Katsuki, Jiro, Ochako, and Mina were the ones to join Izuku on his trip to the workshop, large stacks of paper in hand.

“Hey, aren’t we getting close to the Dean’s office?”

“Well, he was the one who greenlit the workshop and he decided to have it close by.”

“How’d you get it greenlit?” Mina asked.

“We’ll show you that, too. We have a little time before the presentation.”  As they neared the Dean’s office, Izuku opened a secret door in the wall across from it with a handprint. “If you prove trustworthy, I’ll give you guys access as well. Until then,” He gestured to the doorway. “After you.” The group walked down the stairs and into the workshop. Izuku hadn’t really kept track of how many small adjustments they had made in the time since school started, so he was surprised when Jiro said,

“Holy crap, this place is big.”

“Huh, I guess it is. Let me give you the grand tour.” They walked over to the Holotable. “This is one of our inventions, the Holotable.”

“That’s Incredible!” Jiro said. “I mean the suit is great, but this could make normal computers obsolete!”

“Hey, Izu, just finished the maintenance on the reactor.” Said Mei, walking in with grease on her face and arms, carrying a large wrench, resting it on her shoulder.

“Ah! If you’ll look over here,” He grabbed Mei by the shoulders and brought her to the group. “This, right here, is my personal helper gremlin. Also my girlfriend.” Mei elbowed him in the stomach.

“And this here is my professional lab rat.”

“Okay, I walked into that one.” Izuku said, rubbing where he was elbowed. “No, but seriously, this is my lovely girlfriend Mei Hatsume, as you already know, and my partner in crime slash invention.” He walked over to the wall across from the desks. “Over here is where I store restored versions of my previous suits. Mostly restored superficially, so they can’t be used anymore, but the latest suit on display is the one I use. Mei, if you wouldn’t mind?” Mei pressed some buttons which caused the wall to open and show off the Mark I, II, III and IV.

“Whoa, the first one seems really…old.” Mina commented.

“Well, we didn’t have the budget we have now.” Izuku said.

“What was your budget, Dagobah Beach?” Bakugo asked.

“Well, yes, actually.” Izuku said, seriously. The group was confused.

“What’s Dagobah Beach?” Mina asked.

“A dump. It was a beach before offshore dumping made trash wash up onto it.” Bakugo informed them.

“So you just got parts from there?” Uraraka asked.

“It also helped with my training. Mei’s still stronger than me, but I can hold my own in a quirkless fight.” Izuku said.

“I can see why you need the suit, then.” Jiro teased.

“Hey, you try fighting someone who’s been lifting steel beams and giant scrap metal since she was six, “ Izuku said.

“Five!” Mei corrected as she walked over to one of her tables and put on a welding mask and started working on something.

“What she said,” Izuku responded.

“Wouldn’t that make her bulky and slow? She doesn’t seem that way at all,” Mina said. Mei turned off the welder.

“Just because I had zero social skills doesn’t mean my mom wanted me to look like a monster, so she helped me work out the right way,” She said. “I never saw the point, but Izuku seems to like the way I look, so…” she turned back to the project.

“I do. I really, really do,” Izuku agreed. The girls rolled their eyes and Katsuki simply chuckled. “You’re beautiful, even with the grease stains!” Izuku yelled to her, to which she turned and genuinely smiled. “You’re still taking a shower when you get home.” She then grimaced and turned back to her project. Izuku clapped his hands, before rubbing them together. “So! Anyone wanna see the reason we got this place to begin with?” The group nodded, and Izuku walked up to the suits, specifically the fourth and main one. He stepped up to the display case as it opened for him, automatically. He then took out the ARC reactor. He turned around and walked back to the group.

“This, right here, is the ARC reactor, the crown jewel of our work together and the main reason I stand before you today in this school. It powers the suit and is entirely green energy. Eventually it runs out of power, but that requires a lot of action with the suit.” He then placed the reactor on the edge of the holotable. “There is also a huge one, much less efficient, at Hatsume Industries.”

“Oh yeah, I heard about that. It was to shut up the hippies wasn’t it?” Jiro asked.

“That’s the official story, we won’t get into it right now. We call that the Full Size ARC Reactor Model I. Who wants to see the Model II?” The group raised their hands, Bakugo a bit more begrudgingly. “Mei, you like to be the presenter, you wanna take this one?” Mei grinned before taking a cloth and wiping her face before speeding over to the group.

“Follow me!” She said before leading the group into the back room. The visitors were greeted with the sight of a massive, round generator with pulsing blue energy inside and held together with what looked like steel, but was probably a lot stronger.

“Whoa…” Was the general consensus.

“This is The Full Size Arc Reactor Model II. We convinced Nedzu and Power Loader to give extra credit and tickets to the I-Expo for helping out with the building of it,” Mei said. Izuku scoffed.

“We? I did it, and you told me I was crazy to negotiate with Nedzu.”

“I was trying to look cool, honey,” She said through gritted teeth, forcing a smile.

“No, you were lying, babe.”

“Anyway,” Mina cut in. “Before Mei murders her boyfriend,” She snarked. “What is this thing doing here?”

“Oh, it’s powering everything in every part of the school,” Mei said, and the couple were amused at the group’s dumbfounded looks.

“It’s that powerful!? How many times do you have to replace that thing?!”

“Well, it’s had the bare minimum maintenance since we built it at the beginning of the year. We check it for any lack of power every day and, well, it’s still in perfect working order.

“Bullshit, the original only powers an eight story building!” Katsuki shouted. The rest of the group asked themselves how he knew that.

“Mr. Midoriya, Ms. Hatsume!” said a squeaky voice from the main lab. The group walked to where he was. “Ah, I see you have more of an audience, Power Loader was crushed that he couldn’t attend.”

“Hello, Dean Nedzu. I hope you’re ready to be amazed.”

“I am certainly interested to see how well this project works.” Nedzu said with a smile.

“Uh, Izuku, what is this project?” Ochako asked.

“Well, I think it would be much better to demonstrate!” Izuku said before making eye contact with Mei. They nodded at each other before going to two of the four keyboards of the Holodeck.

“Gather round, friends!” Mei said, and they formed a semi-circle around the Holodeck, a bit of distance between them and the device.

“Alright…” Izuku said as he and Mei typed things on their respective keyboards on the Holotable. Their friends watched with curiosity. They suddenly stopped typing. “So!” Izuku said, getting up. “This is a big moment for us. We have worked together on this project in the background for some time, and you shall now see the fruits of it. Our latest project, booting up in 3…” He hovered his hand over the enter key on his keyboard. “2…” The spectators watched in anticipation. “1…” He pressed the key. “JARVIS, why don’t you introduce yourself?” A sort of ball of various codes appeared on the holotable.

“Hello.” It said with a masculine voice, sounding almost like your stereotypical butler, as the codes moved a bit with each syllable. “As you just heard, I am JARVIS, which stands for Just A Rather Very Intelligent System. It is also based on the name of a good man one of my creators knew. I am a learning program and an advanced AI, created specifically to help my creators, as well as UA’s faculty and students. I shall help with the creation and testing of support items, as well as helping the teachers with anything they need that I am capable of assisting with, and I will provide numerous quality of life programs for the students in the dorms.” The audience was sufficiently impressed so far.

“All of this will only be provided when specifically requested, so do not be afraid to ask for assistance. I will be reiterating all of this and more in an assembly tomorrow, as approved by Dean Nedzu.”

“Any questions for JARVIS before we start integrating him into the UA systems? With your permission, of course, Dean Nedzu,” Mei asked. Bakugo was the one to raise his hand first.

“How do we know you won’t go rogue and shut down our stuff?” He asked.

“I am programmed to never harm anyone in the school records, as well as anyone brought to my attention as safe, not that I would harm a human being unless explicitly told to by my creators or Principal Nedzu. Even then, I would request confirmation. I will also be as resistant to hacking as UA’s security system is when I am implemented, and will be updated with it. And to answer your question directly, I will not turn off any devices unless asked to, specifically.”

“Impressive. JARVIS, I am Dean Nedzu and I would like to personally welcome you to UA,” Nedzu said.

“Thank you, Dean Nedzu, and I hope I continue to impress.”

“So, JARVIS, you said you were a learning program. What does that mean?” Mina asked.

“Well, over time, I will learn not only how to cater to each teacher and student while giving them sufficient privacy, I will learn speaking patterns and behaviors while interacting with people. Essentially, I will gain a personality. One that won’t interfere with my functions, but will hopefully be distinct and help me be easier to talk to,” JARVIS replied.

“So you were made to be essentially a butler?” Kyoka asked.

“That is mostly accurate.” JARVIS. “I will be around for any more questions you may have, but I must ask, shall I begin my upload to UA’s systems? I require Mr. Midoriya, Ms. Hatsume and Dean Nedzu to confirm before I do.”

“I think that should be acceptable.” Nedzu said.

“Well, I think you’re ready.” Mei agreed.

“Alright JARVIS, begin upload.” Izuku confirmed.

“Yes sir. It should only be an hour or two before I am fully uploaded.”

“Thank you JARVIS.” Mei said.

“Anything for you, Ms. Hatsume.” The code sphere disappeared and the inventors walked around the Holodeck.

“Well, that should be helpful for everyone. He’ll be implemented into my suit as well and act as an advisor for me, at least in the field. He won’t be helping me during training, cause I need to learn things.” Izuku said.

“On the other hand, I get JARVIS’ help all day.” Mei said, cheekily. Izuku grumbled. “So, we heard Dean Nedzu’s opinion, what does everyone else think?” The group gave mostly positive responses, Uraraka’s response standing out a bit.

“As long as he doesn’t go all Skynet on us, he’s welcome.”

“Well, we should probably brief the staff and install speakers for JARVIS in the classrooms, right, Dean Nedzu? We have the integrated camera-speakers ready.” Nedzu nodded with a smile. “Alright, thank you for attending the demonstration, we’ll see you guys tomorrow!” Izuku said, basically telling everyone ‘Get out’.

“Good God, this school is huge.” Izuku said, trying to catch his breath as the couple made it back to the dorm with one final cart of integrated camera-speakers. They had been through every part of the school that wasn’t the training fields, installing one in every room.

“Yeah…but we’re at the final stretch, the last dorm building!” Mei yelled, out of breath.

“Yeah…wait, we have to eat!” Izuku whined.

“Oh, God, your mom probably already ate so we have to make our own food too!” Mei whined. The two groaned before they entered the building. The two took the elevator and started from the top floor going downward and when they finally finished, they almost passed out on the way to the train, Izuku actually passing out on the train. They finally made it home only to be bombarded with questions from Inko about JARVIS. They resigned themselves to it, eventually falling asleep at the dinner table.

Tenya Iida took a look at a picture of his family that was on his dresser, specifically looking at his brother, Tensei. He then looked back to his computer which had a video playing of the hero killer escaping the police. Iida closed his laptop for the night and moved to his bed and went to sleep with two things on his mind. His visit with his brother at the hospital the next day after school, and burning hatred for the man known as Stain.
