Work Text:
it was only eleven in the morning
when i looked out the window
seeking an escape from algebra
the sky was blue
the clouds were sparse
eight cars flashing red and blue
were lined against the far building
it was only eleven-oh-one we were in lockdown
eleven-oh-one in the morning,
blinds were shut
doors were locked
we were huddled
among our fellows
in the back of the class.
we sat in the dark,
afraid
confused.
they never told us why we were in lockdown
only half an hour into the silence,
only through social media,
did we learn that someone
had a gun.
two hours later, the lockdown is lifted
no casualties
some dumb kid with too much ego,
caught running
after learning consequence
for the first time.
it was only one in the afternoon
classes continue,
no school is cancelled
and i think to myself
distantly
that i missed lunch
