Chapter 1: Mirabel’s Gift Ceremony!

Chapter Text

Mirabel Madrigal!

Mirabel hummed softly as she watched through the mirror, as Dolores helped her with her braids, while Isabella was decorating her hair with flowers. “There, do you like it?” Dolores asked softly, as Isabella fixed one of the daisies slipping off her hair. “ I love it! Thank you!” She said happily, though keeping her voice levelled so Dolores’s ears doesn’t hurt.

“Girls, is everything going well?” Julieta asked, opening the door before gasping softly. “You look beautiful, Mariposa.” She said, as the two older sisters high-fived. “Gracias, mamí. Mirabel said, smiling widely. Julieta gave her and the other two girls a kiss on their foreheads, before Dolores perked up. “Abuela is calling for us, we should go.” She then smiled at Mirabel. “Good luck, Mir.” Isabella kissed her sister on the forehead, before they all walked off.

Mirabel took a deep breath, as Casita jiggled a tile. “A little nervous, but I’m excited, Casita.” Mirabel giggled, before the tiles jiggled again and she was whisked off downstairs, laughing softly.

She was then placed the floor gently, before Casita waved goodbye to the girl. “Bye-bye Casita.” She waved, before she heard her Abuela clear her throat, causing the conversation on the other side of the curtains die down.

"40 years ago, in the darkest moment, this candle blessed us with a miracle. And the greatest honour of our family has been to use our blessings to serve this beloved community. Tonight, we come together once more, as another steps into the light. To make us proud." Abuela said softly, as the curtains were drawn back and Casita fixed the lights to illuminate the path to the stairs, turning the tiles a different colour as well.

Mirabel inhaled deeply, before she stepped into the light. She could see her sisters, Tía, Tío, and cousins, waiting at the very front of the crowd, while her parents were up by the stairs with Abuela.

Mirabel slowly stepped towards the stairs, ignoring the eyes of the crowd and kept her head up. Isabella could be seen smiling proudly at her, while Luisa was dabbing away her tears from her eyes. Camilo was cheering for her softly, beside a smiling Bruno.

As she stood in front of her Abuela, who knelt down to face her, she smiled. “Do you promise to use your Gift for the good of the Encanto?” Mirabel nodded, which made her Abuela smile. She stood back up and stepped aside, letting Mirabel face her door.

She stared up at the glowing door, pulsing with magic, before glancing at the Miracle. She then turned back and slowly reached out for the door. As her hand grasped the cool metal, the door came to life, and a few gasps were heard as intricate designs filtered through the wood.

The light disappeared, and what shone from the door made everyone began to whisper in confusion. “What kind of Gift is it?” One townsperson asked, as Mirabel stared at the design.

It was just her, a lot older, something surrounding her form. It glowed, pulsed and shone, and from the look on Door Mirabel’s face, she was pretty happy with it, if her glowing eyes and smiling face was anything to go by. “We have a new Gift!” Abuela said proudly, as Mirabel smiled. The crowd applauded, before Julieta scooped her in her arms and Augustin kissed her forehead. “Congratulations, Miraboo! Why don’t you look inside?”

Mirabel was placed back on the floor, before the door was opened. “Woah…” The first noticeable thing within the room was that it had shelves and shelves of cloth of different colours and fabric type, threads and wool in multiple different colours, different sized needles safely stored inside a container and two mannequins, waiting to be used as fitting. There were a few other things used in sewing, like a few rulers, some straight, some L-shaped, rolls of measuring tapes, all in different lengths and some sketchbooks, to put designs in.

“Ok but how does your power work exactly?” Mirabel simply shakes her head. “Maybe we’ll figure it out later, when you all go home.” Mirabel said simply, before she walks away, wanting to find Camilo in the busy crowd. The adults also said the same, since it’s not their place to force a child to use powers they just got mere minutes ago.

After the party died down, and most of the guests left, Mirabel hummed. “What is your Gift, Mir?” Camilo asked, as she cut some of the orange cloth, shrugging.

“I don’t know, Cami. All I want to do right now is make you a new ruana.” She hummed, as Camilo tilted his head in confusion. “Why?” Mirabel simply showed him a tear, concealed behind him. “Oh. How’d that happen?” Mirabel hummed as she grabbed a needle, before she accidentally poked her finger. “Ouch.” Camilo said, before the two watched as Mirabel’s finger was covered by a teal, clear forcefield.

From within said forcefield, her finger healed, and the shield disappeared. “Wow…” Camilo and Mirabel said together, before Camilo looked around. “Huh. I think you’re the only person with a room in our familia that doesn’t really correspond to the gifts.” Camilo said softly, as Mirabel nodded. “I guess so. But it’s not that bad.” The smile on her face made Camilo smile too.

“Here you go!” Camilo blinked at the ruana in her hands, before looking at her hands with confusion. “How’d you… Finish it so fast?” He asked, taking the ruana. It had small chameleon designs lining the edge of it, threaded in copper colour thread. The ruana itself is very soft and the material is breathable. “This is amazing Mirabel,” he looked up at the girl, smiling, “thank you.” The girl smiled too, before a knock was heard. “Camilo, Mirabel, you two should sleep now.” Abuela said, as she watched the two children nod. “Right, sorry Abuela.” Camilo hurriedly left the room, while Abuela hummed. “Did you make that?” Mirabel nodded, smiling a little.

“It’s very nice. Good job Mirabel.” Abuela said, before she starts to leave. “Buenas noches, Mira.” Mirabel nodded, yawning herself. “Buenas noches, Abuela…” The matriarch smiled, before she closed the door softly.

Mirabel went into the bedroom, before sleeping soundly.
