Work Text:
the moon roamed in the sky, soaring every day to bring the night. the stars shined when she did, and the dark sky brought out her shine.
she enjoyed the quiet that the night brought, and was so very happy to bring it. she could see the cities below, the amazing lights.
music. rain. it was all better in the night.
-
anne ran through the playground with a stick in hand, smacking it in the dirt with a grin. she giggled as she soon let it go in favor of going on the playset.
she climbed up the playset until she was on top. looking over the park, if she tried hard enough she swore she could see her family’s restaurant.
-
the moon smiled down at the city, at the boardwalk. then she paused as she stared at the sea. the tides powerful as they moved, higher and higher. as if they were trying to reach her.
the sea stared up at the sky, just noticing the moon staring back at her. the sea smiled before reaching out again.
“hey!” she waved.
-
marcy looked at the playset, specifically anne. she felt encouraged to go up so she tried. she only mangled to climb up the rock climbing part of the playset before she lost her balance and fell. she felt embarrassed as she held her arm.
“are you okay!?” anne yelled, she saw marcy fall off in the corner of her eye.
the small girl tried her hardest not to cry out of embarrassment. “yeah..”
anne kneeled, still on the playset above marcy. she reached out her arm. “do you want to try again?”
marcy stared at her hand before she attempted to climb the wall again, with anne’s help she managed to get on.
-
the sea stared up at the moon, the tides reaching out towards her. “what are you doing?” the moon asked, just now noticing.
“not sure! I just feel a pull towards you.” the sea answered back, standing with the ocean around her body. hair damp and air tasting of salt. “towards me?” the moon decided to stay above the sea just for a little longer. drawing out the night.
“would it be okay if we just spoke to each other for a little longer?” if the sea tried hard enough, she could just barely reach out to the sky. “can you come down here?”
the moon shook her head, “i don’t think so..can you come up here?”
a powerful tide smacked against the sand, the waves reaching towards the moon which brought her much delight.
“i can try!”
the moon reached down to the sea, she could smell the salt in the air and could practically feel the cool water on her fingertips.
-
anne grabbed onto marcy’s hand as they rushed to her house. the other holding a hand protectively over her busted nose.
“dude! how did this even happen!?” anne asked, quickly rushing her inside. “i’m not sure? i think i fell? or maybe a tree branch..?” marcy’s chin, lips, and nose were covered in blood. there was sure to be a bruise the next day.
the two retreated to anne’s bedroom where anne gave her a towel and began to patch at her nose. even looking up a video online just to see if she was doing everything correctly.
marcy winced and hissed at anne touching her nose. the other apologized for each time.
“it’s fine, anna banana. just a little- ow!” she pulled her face away from anne.
“i just worry about you marcy..” anne traced her finger delicately on marcy’s face. running across her cheekbone, lips and the bump on her nose. “is it broken..?” anne asked out loud. she didn’t remember that bump.
she wouldn’t tell marcy but sometimes when the other slept or was just not paying attention, anne would trace out her face shape.
marcy giggled at the action before reaching out and taking anne’s hand in her own. holding it dearly, she had her blood on her hand. “i know you worry..it’s okay.”
she stared at anne’s hand as if it was the only thing in the world. “we’re going to be okay.”
-
“you seem determined.” the moon spoke out, resting as she stared down. she was captivated by the sea who grinned up at her. “well this isn’t the first time i’ve done this. might sound crazy but i feel like i reach towards you. even without trying.” the moon smiled at the seas words.
the sea watched every day when the moon left. she’d stare at where she has last seen the moon, and ache as there would be nothing in her place.
-
“follow your heart.”
marcy watched as anne ran after the plantars. an ache in her heart as she could still feel the other in her arms.
she waited and waited, reaching out toward her friend. not knowing when she’d see her again. but she longed to be with her.
-
the moon reached out as far as she could, and the sea tried to ride the tide to her. still, they were so far apart.
the sea pulled back, exhausted. “what’s the view from up there?”
“it’s beautiful.” the moon answered back, staring down at the sea. the reflection of the stars on the water, the sea’s powerful waves.
the sea let the waves reach to her thighs. “i want to be up there with you.”
“don’t you want me down there with you?” the moon quipped curiously. to which the sea shook her head. “you belong up there! to see everything! it’s beautiful. the moon is so beautiful.” another powerful wave.
“i just wish to be with you. it gets lonely.”
the moon smiled down, “you’re with the fish?”
“and you’re with the stars!” the sea spoke with amazement.
they smiled at each other, once again attempting to reach out to each other. the moon going as far down as she could, and the sea rising as tall as she could.
-
anne smiled at her friend who was writing down in her journal. she seemed to have flourished in amphibia. she could say the same about herself. she got up from where she was sitting and hugged marcy from behind, pressing her face to her shoulder.
she could smell the sea and some type of smoke on her. “were you flying with jo over the water again?” she asked softly. the two were in the field so she wasn’t afraid of being affectionate towards her friend.
“yeah. do i smell like a bird?” she asked, finishing up her last sentence before setting the journal down.
“no. you smell good. like a new marcy.” she sniffed her cloak again, causing the other to giggle out. “anne! that’s weird!” she leaned back on her friend, even if she called it weird, she still relished in the hold anne had around her.
“do you ever think about home?” anne asked.
marcy shrugged, “i used to.” a lie. “but not as much anymore. plus i have you here. and sashy when we find her.” she could feel anne’s hold tighten around her. “we’re going home soon. this is so exciting.”
in a way marcy believed that anne deserved to go home, she believed that anne deserved everything. but she didn’t want to be alone.
“yeah..hey anne?” she waited for the other to face her before she kissed her lips.
-
the moon and sea desperately reached out towards each other. believing that if they tried hard enough they could touch.
their fingertips barely brushing against each other, but it wasn’t enough.
“sea! i have to go!” the moon yelled, knowing it was her time to leave. the moon couldn’t hold the sky forever. as she started to go, still reaching to the moon, the tides weren’t as strong.
but the sea was determined.
“just a little longer! i’ll wait for you, moon!” their hands were almost there before the pull took them away. they stared at each other with tears.
could they ever reach each other.
-
“i just need to “ marcy’s eyes widened as she felt the sword pierce through her body, she felt hot flashes throughout her body. she could hear her blood, feel her body pulse.
but no pain. no pain as she stared at anne. “i’m sorry..for everything..” she felt her eyes sting and throat burn as she let those tears run down her face.
“marcy!” anne yelled, reaching out to her friend just as she fell. just then she was transported with the plantars back to earth.
when she opened her eyes, she could taste the sea of the ocean nearby and the faint sight of the moon far into the sky.
