Chapter 1: With or Without You

Chapter Text

“Magnus, you’ve got to listen to me, please. What happened with Jace-please, you’ve got to know it meant nothing to me. You’re it for me, Magnus, you are-”

“Then why would you sleep with him, Alec? It’s barely been a day before I said anything about us taking a break, it wasn’t even a breakup! I wanted to fix things with you right after you left,” Magnus turned away from Alec’s hold, pushing against the taller’s broad chest to get away. A hand brought up to his forehead, a lonely tear shed from his eye, running down his cheek.

“I want to fix things with you, Magnus. I regret it all, with Jace, even walking into that club! It was just the spur of the moment, Mags. Please, believe me.” Alec chased after Magnus, bringing up his toned arms around the Indonesian man, holding him gently. Because if he were to let go, he wasn’t sure if Magnus would ever come back into his arms ever again.

Magnus stayed silent, his head slightly shaking. His silent cries were made out into the room, his trembling hands dragging against Alec’s forearms to make him let go.

“Let go, Alec. Please just leave, I want to be left alone.”

A beat, and the jet-black-haired man shook his head.

“No, never Magnus. Please, we can talk about this, it doesn’t have to be over. Nothing has to be. I can’t let you go, we always find our way back to each other.”

Magnus tremored even more in his hold, his cries became louder. He grabbed hold of Alec’s hands. And for a moment, the two stayed silent, the sound of both their sniffling as they held onto one another. Alec shuffled closer to Magnus, bowing his head into the back of his neck, Magnus holding on tightly onto his arms.

The moment didn’t last long, but to them, it meant everything. But as the time ticked passed, Magnus made to move and turn in Alec's arms, his hands making their way to his chest before pushing him away, back to the opened door, and out the other side.

Before Alec could even comprehend what was going on, he was metres away from Magnus, behind the closing door. There were no words to describe what Alec was feeling right now, his only actions were to put himself against the now-shut door, his hands desperately grabbing onto the handle, begging for it to open, begging to have Magnus back in his arms again.

On the other side of the door was Magnus. In the same position, his hands instead were placed on the actual door itself. His tears now smoothly glided against his cheeks, his lips trembling.

He could only just hear from his side of the door, barely catching Alec’s muffled words.

“I’m not giving up on us, Magnus. Not now, not ever.”

______________________________________

Magnus wanted to forget it all. Forget Alec, forget that they weren’t together anymore, forget everything. Even for just a moment. That’s why he was currently at the bar, in Hunter’s Moon, drinking away his sorrows.

The bar’s music played in the background, people’s chatter, their elated laughter. Magnus could barely hold himself up, even as he was currently sitting on one of the stools. Maia looked at him with a sad frown, the man was a stubborn fool. Once Magnus set his mind on something, there wasn’t really anything anyone could do.

A minute, or two later, a man came and sat beside the Indonesian man. Magnus peeked an eye at him once he finished his margarita. He looked similar to Alec, his Alexander. The stranger had a dark stubble, his eyes were pure green, his cheekbones were sharp, and so was his dark hair. His expressions showed concern and worry.

Unbeknownst to them, Maia had turned away, taking out her phone from her jeans pocket and calling a friend. Neither gentlemen noticed.

“I think you’ve had enough to drink there. Do you need someone to take you home?” The man motioned to Maia for water. When it arrived, the kind man gave it to Magnus. Magnus refused, shaking his head. The stranger insisted and argued with him until he drank.

Thirty minutes later, Magnus was sober enough to thank him. He was grateful, and Magnus felt a little less devastated.

“Thank you, really. I would be unconscious on the floor, drunk to my heart’s content if you didn’t come by and help me, even if I was stubborn.” The man only shook his head, flashing a charming smile.

“It was no problem, we all need a little help sometimes. If it’s not too much trouble, I’d like to know your name, I’m Grey.”

“Well then thank you, Grey. I’m Magnus, nice to meet you.”

The man, now known as Grey, lends out a hand. Magnus took it, shaking his hand. A friendly smile on both their faces.

For the moment, Magnus forgot Alec. Forgot their broken relationship. Everything around him seemed to go idle. So much so that he didn’t even notice someone looking at them from the Hunter’s Moon window.

Out in the pouring rain, right outside the window, stood Alec. His drenched phone in hand, his leather jacket decorated with droplets of rain, his hazel eyes looked on inside the bar, watching as Magnus shook hands with Grey. Their smiles mirrored each other, as Grey held Magnus’ hand and dragged him to the dance floor, where they danced close to one another.

Maia was the only one who was able to witness both of them. From the bar, as Magnus danced with Grey, the smaller man’s eyes turned to Alec, looking on with longing and yearning to be back in the other man’s arms. And Alec? Alec stayed behind the glass window, unmoving but his eyes were still on Magnus, mirroring how the other felt.

Alec could practically feel his heart break in two, his eyes were glassy, his hair drenched from the rain.

Where do they go from here?
