Louis startled as the loud boom of thunder was heard from outside the house, the rhythmic sound of heavy rainfall following within seconds.
“Shit,” he muttered under his breath, folding the corner of the page he was reading in his book before shutting it closed. He could have sworn thunderstorms weren’t on the forecast for today when he’d checked the weather app earlier. The puppies were gonna freak out.
He unfurled himself from the blanket he was cozied up in, already making a mental list of where his kids may have gone to hide from the storm.
He started by checking the obvious places, but both the playroom and the puppies’ bedrooms were empty. A quick trip to the bathroom revealed the kids weren’t in there either. Louis even looked behind the shower curtain in case they had taken to hiding in the bathtub.
His search through Harry’s home office on his way to the living room turned up empty, as did his quick look through the linen closet (he remembered hiding in there himself as a young pup, the piles of fabric vaguely reminding him of the comfort of his Mum’s nest).
Louis frowned as he exited the hallway and entered the living room still with no sign of his babies. He did find Harry stoking the fire though, presumably to keep their house warm in case the storm turned bad enough to cut the power overnight.
“I can’t find the pups,” he announced to his Alpha in a defeated tone as he perched himself on one arm of the couch. “They must be terrified.”
Harry appeared by his side within moments, enveloping his Omega in a warm embrace and rubbing his back to soothe his mate’s nervous energy. “They can’t be very far, my love. I’m sure we’ll find them soon.”
They separated in order to cover more ground quicker, Louis headed down the stairs to the basement while Harry went to inspect the kitchen. The former was worriedly looking through a storage closet when he heard his Alpha’s voice resonate through their home.
“They’re up here, babe!”
Louis hurried up the stairs, melting into a puddle of goo at the sight of their three kids huddled together in the cupboard under the kitchen sink, clutching at each other and trembling slightly as another loud thud of thunder shook the walls of their sturdy house.
“Come here, pups,” Harry said gently but sternly, opening his strong arms to their three little ones. “Daddy’ll keep you safe, I promise.”
The little pups crawled out of their hiding spot and into Harry’s waiting arms, whimpering in fear of the raging elements outside.
“Daddy’s got you,” Harry whispered again, placing a soft kiss to the top of each of their heads as he easily lifted them up and carried them to the warm and cozy living room. He sat down on the plush couch, and Louis quickly draped a soft blanket over the Alpha’s shoulders so that the pups could comfortably nestle against him.
They settled against his chest, still holding on to one another in the cutest way possible. Louis looked on fondly as Harry scented all three of the pups until their whimpering stopped and they eventually fell asleep in his arms.
Sensing he was being observed, Harry smiled up at Louis, extending his already full arm out so that his Omega could cuddle up against him as well. Louis didn’t hesitate for a second before joining his little family under the blanket, planting soft kisses on each of his puppies’ chubby cheeks to bid them goodnight.
“I love you,” he whispered to his Alpha, nosing at his neck until Harry got the hint and started scenting him as well with a quiet chuckle.
“Love you baby.”
