Chapter 1: The Act of Learning

Chapter Text

He was tired.

Izuku Midoriya was tired.

Every single day he was training to uphold a legacy he didn't even want to fulfill.

He didn't even know about it until after AllMight gave him the quirk.

You would think that he should've known he would have had a 200 year old relic chasing after him for the quirk he now owned.

Apparently, it was deemed unimportant though since AllMight claimed he had already disposed of him. That's also where his stupidity comes in.

It's common knowledge that if you didn't find a body, then the person is most definitely alive.

Everyone who knew about One for all and All for one failed to comprehend this though.

Izuku didn't even see the point in this battle. Why should he continue something he has no interest in? Why should he continue the legacy when he never signed up for it?

The only thing he asked for was a quirk, not whatever else came with the package.

If he could, Izuku wanted to run away as far as possible, just to get away from everyone.

Not only did he have to deal with the pressure of One for all, but he also had to deal with the peer pressure from his classmates and teachers.

His classmates had deemed him the class cinnamon roll, which is hilarious because that was quite the opposite.

It's also kind of funny that they expect so much from him but they aren't even really friends with him.

Sure, he has conversations with them, but only when he goes to them first. They never come to him first.

Izuku also has Mr. Aizawa always saying how he needed to get his quirk under control and stop breaking his bones. Now, Izuku would love to do that, but that's kind of hard when you have a quirk that's been cultivated for 8 generations before you.

Mr. Aizawa would also know that he was a late bloomer if he had taken the time to read the student files, which he neglected.

Even Recovery Girl doesn't want to have to deal with him anymore, saying that if he keeps breaking his bones she's going to stop healing him. That's also ridiculous, since she's the school nurse and could most definitely get fired for refusing the treatment of her patient, but that didn't stop her.

She was also always telling him along with AllMight that he needed to get the quirk under control so he could be the next Symbol of Peace.

Had they ever stopped to consider the fact that he didn’t even want to be the next Symbol of Peace? Sure, Izuku will admit that he had originally wanted to be a hero just like AllMight when he was younger, but after meeting the man, he changed his mind drastically.

From what he’s seen, AllMight is a giant yellow buffoon who only really cares about the legacy of One for All and Izuku’s becoming the next Symbol of Peace. Not once had he asked him what Izuku wanted to do with the quirk instead.

This is because it had never occurred to AllMight that Izuku would ever want to be anything else. He figured that since having One for All was a big thing, that Izuku would forever follow whatever AllMight had to say.

As time went on, Izuku realized that he didn’t like the way AllMight and the other heroes did things, and that he no longer had any interest in being the Symbol of Peace that AllMight wanted him to be.

Of course, he couldn’t bring this up to AllMight, since he would just laugh in his face and say something along the lines of, “What a funny joke Young Midoriya!” or, “With that quirk you can easily become the Symbol of Peace!”

Izuku knew that if he tried to bring it up, that that would be one of the many responses he would receive. There was also the possibility that AllMight got really mad at what he would say, and might punch him instead.

He would much rather avoid being Texas Smashed in the face thank you very much.

Izuku had also started to see the ghosts inside of One for All, and let’s just clarify, that it was exhausting. Whenever he saw them, he would wake up drained of energy. One time, he had even woken up and realized he had used his quirk in his sleep and broke the window. He got in huge trouble for that one.

The past users were also pretty content in showing him their past memories, so he was also trying to balance that as well. Balancing seven other people’s memories and experiences along with your own is extremely tiring. It was also kinda getting annoying seeing them all be killed by All for One over and over again.

The funny part about all of this though was the fact that every single time he saw one of their memories, he never found out exactly why they were all going after All for One.

Not one time was this thought clarified. The only thing Izuku saw was the past users going on a mass hunt for All for One to try and kill him. To Izuku, it just looked like the past users had a fixation on trying to kill All for One to avenge their fallen mentors.

Wasn’t the whole aspect of being a hero supposed to have nothing to do with revenge?

At this point, Izuku started to truly question what the true aspect of being a hero entailed. As soon as he started questioning heroes, he realized that most of the heroes were fakes, prancing around trying to get the most attention from the media.

It was sickening, that the heroes were more worried about their media appearance than rather trying to save people. It was also sickening that they would let their own bias seep into who they would save.

Izuku did some research, and saw that the Pro Hero Mount Lady rarely saved mutant type citizens, preferring to save the people that had no physical appearance as part of their quirk.

It was horrible how many heroes did this, and it was also horrible how lots of heroes had killed their victims as well.

It was almost laughable that the number one and two heroes were the heroes with the most casualty and death rates.

A lot of times, AllMight’s victims would die shortly after from being hit by one of the strong punches he threw out. A lot of civilians would also be killed around AllMight’s fights because of the blast radius of his punches.

A lot of his punches would knock over buildings in the surrounding area, crushing the people that were unfortunately still inside.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, don’t even get Izuku started on how bad Endeavor was. For starters, if he couldn’t even raise a proper family, then why the hell was he a hero?

When his wife was instituted into a mental hospital, that should’ve been an immediate red flag to the public, if it even reached them. Because of the stupid Hero Commission, Endeavor was able to hide the fact that his wife was put into a mental hospital, so no one knew.

The only reason Izuku knew this information was because Todoroki had told him at the Sports Festival before their match.

Just from knowing the horrid things Endeavor did to his family, Izuku was scared to check his hero statistics.

Let’s just say his caution was well placed, because it was disgusting.

Over the years of Endeavor being a hero, he had killed 143 villains, 76 civilians, and had over 1000 casualties from people around where he was fighting. Even though they were villains didn’t mean they should have been killed, especially since the villains Endeavor had killed were small-time villains that were only stealing to try and provide for themselves or their families.

Endeavor was constantly using excessive force when he didn’t need to, which led to unwarranted casualties after every single one of his fights.

Izuku immediately realized that this was bad, and tried to bring up his worries to his classmates. He had faith that they would try to understand where he was coming from, but alas, they all ended up laughing in his face saying he was funny.

Izuku didn’t think it was funny, loads of innocent people were dying all over the place because of incompetent heroes.

That incident also further cemented Izuku’s caution about what he said around his classmates. Always making sure he said something that would please them and make sure they wouldn’t lash out at him.

In the end, it was always like it was at middle school, saying and doing things to avoid getting in trouble and getting yelled at.

Izuku tried, he really did. He tried to live up to people’s standards for him, but he just couldn’t take it anymore. And that night, Izuku decided that he was going to run away from the things that rendered him useless, and just take a break.

He decided that if they looked for him, then they cared. If they didn’t, well, he’d cross that bridge if it ever came.
