How’d you get this one?” Emily inquires, trying to ignore the feeling of hard muscle under her hands as she cleans a gash on the knight's bicep. It's far from the first time she’s seen this particular patient, and she’s lost count of how many injuries she brought to her humble practice.
Reyna looks up at her with a cocky twist to her pretty lips. “Some thugs were menacing a poor widow and her children. I uh, put a stop to it.” She gives her a blinding smile, but it does little to distract from the anger lying behind her eyes.
She doesn’t doubt the story, she’s seen Reyna’s noble, sometimes foolhardy deeds up close in town, but the way she plays it off to her seems a bit like she’s trying to impress her with her tale of selfless bravery to flirt with her. Emily returns the smile with a little eye roll, trying to ignore the butterflies in her stomach.
“And was this sanctioned by your lord?” Emily asked while applying ointment on the wound, already knowing the answer. If she got hurt on official business, she could have seen one of the fancy doctors he kept in his employ.
“I'm afraid they were official thugs, milady” she answered, playing with the ends of her flaxen brain. “I may have sworn fealty to him, but I cannot stand by and let innocent people suffer. His taxes on the poorest are unjust.”
Emily sweeps a loose strand of hair behind her ear, and finishes tying the bandage around her arm.
“That was very noble of you”
“Thank you”
She kisses Reyna’s freckled cheek as she stands to retrieve her chain mail and take her leave. She laughed gently as The bold knight’s entire face turned scarlet.
“Make sure not to come back too soon”
“After that? I make no promises, milady”
