Work Text:
It was a relaxing Sunday afternoon, where nobody was rushing to meet deadlines or be on camera. Johnny Fiama and Sal Minella were spending the day in Johnny’s own home. Sal is technically supposed to be around Johnny to protect him, but even before that job went into place, their relationship had developed into that of a great friendship and eventually into that of a close romantic relationship.
Johnny was reclined on his couch and he hummed a song that got stuck in his head until Sal’s voice came from behind. “Hey, Johnny?”
Johnny stopped his humming to pay attention. “Yeah?”
“I’ve got somethin’ real important to tell ya.” Sal said in a softer tone than his regular speaking voice. He took a seat on the couch by Johnny.
Johnny turned to face his companion. He knew instantly that he was serious about whatever he was about to say. Sal is regularly loud and boisterous, but Johnny knew that whenever he spoke in that softer voice that it was no joke. “What’s on your mind?” He asked, giving his partner his undivided attention.
“I uh…” Sal’s fingers nervously entwined. He took a breath. “I’m trans.”
Johnny’s eyebrows raised. He needed a second to process this, and another second to make sure that Sal was talking about what he thought he was talking about. “Hm?”
“I’m, y'know… transgender.”
“Huh.” Johnny paused to think it over. “I didn’t know that about ya.” He placed a soft arm around Sal. “Thanks for lettin’ me know.”
Sal’s eyes lit up. “Gee, Johnny, you’re not upset?”
“Upset? Why would I be upset? You’re you, Sal, and I love you. I’m glad you told me.” He smiled at him.
He could tell that Sal was holding back a happy tear or two. “Aw, c’mere. Bring it in.” He outstretched his arms, and Sal instantly bounded into them. Johnny and Sal wrapped their arms around each other in a warm hug. Johnny gave Sal a few pats on the back as he felt some tears slip out of his shaky partner.
After Sal’s anxiety simmered down, Johnny brought him back down to Earth. “Anythin’ new I need to know, pronouns or otherwise?”
“Nope! Just regular ol’ he/him Sal!” He beamed.
“Ah, good to know.” Johnny playfully pet Sal’s head. “I love you Sal, and I always will. Here’s looking at you, kid.”
