Work Text:
Twinkling Christmas lights always made Spencer smile but right now he was cursing Aaron as he tried to untangle the ball wire and plastic.
“This is unacceptable Aaron…really” he huffed as he managed to get them half untangled before hitting another road block of the light ball. Aaron rolled his eyes as he looked to his lover and shook his head.
“ I told you we could just buy a new set…that set might not even work” he stated but Spencer huffed and shook his head.
“But these are already here” he stated as he went back to unraveling the puzzle.
He had been living with Aaron and Jack for almost six months and it was just so simple. No cases, no rushing to the BAU to make a plane. Just them. Hotch would make them breakfast while he helped jack go over his school work. He would give him ideas to think about and in turn at the end of the day the ten year old would come home excited when the teacher would allow for extra research in something. Spencer was always a welcome addition to the Hotchner family.
A cry of triumph sounded from Spencer as the last of the tangles were undone and Jack who had been fluffing the tree moved to help put them on it. Decorating the tree was always his favorite thing to do with his parents and then with Spencer. He watched as his dad gave Spencer a loving look. He did not remember him ever giving his mom that look but he had seen it in photos. The look someone gives to another they love.
“Alright Jack…you put the first ornament on” his dad said and he moved to the box and looked through it. A picture of his mother in a small silver frame was placed near the top as always. Aaron gave a sad smile and Spencer placed a second one of her on the other side at the top. Aaron blinked as the other man placed the ornament his eyes finding his as Spencer blushed.
“With out her we would not have Jack” he said as Aaron smiled and moved to place a picture of Gideon on the tree.
“And with out Gideon…we would not have you” he said. Jack then began placing more as he started talking about which classes he wanted to take at MIT. Once the tree was done and dinner was eaten Jack when to play video games in his room…he and Henry were deep in to World of Warcraft. Spencer sat on the couch beside Aaron. The tv was on playing some war documentary as background noise but Spencer’s entire attention was on the tree. He never kept a tree…his mother never kept a tree but he loved the tree.
“What you thinking?” Aaron asked from his side and Spencer looked at him flashing a softly apologetic smile his way.
“Sorry was just admiring my first family tree is all” he half whispered. Aaron was quiet for a moment before shifting in his seat. Pulling out a small box he held it out to Spencer.
“I was trying to think of some romantic way to do this…but…what you just said was the most romantic thing I have heard in a long time.” He said and Spencer blinked and sat up a bit straighter as he took the small box and opened it. He looked at the simple gold ring…no…not a simple gold ring. The One Ring. Spencer gently picked it up.
“ Aaron” he spoke softly as the older man gently took it and slid it on his finger. His dark brown eyes meeting honey. Spencer slowly however moved to straddle his lovers hips as he looked down to him, hands cupping the older mans face.
“You just gave me the one ring…I hope you know that means I have all the power” he said and Aaron chuckled.
“Oh I know…but you always did” he said and Spencer leaned down tilting Aaron’s chin up for a deep kiss, lights twinkling on the tree that was the silent witness to the beginning of a real family.
