Also, they nipped problems at their source. Penbrook had zero tolerance when it came to insolence, breaking the rules, furthermore bullying. The professors every term had to pass an evaluation with current standers. Also, every student had to see a guidance counselor. The younger children tended to do group sessions—older children were more one-on-one. Either way, Penbrook did its most desirable to make you the most qualified individual you could be.
The establishment permitted pupils to stay until 5:45 for after-hours studying or practice. Inside the music classroom, two classmates were striving to kill two birds with one stone, practicing both for an upcoming musical recital moreover cramming for their SAT. A piano and flute duet played enthralling music, casting a spell upon all who heard it.
The duo was two fifteen-year-olds named Lex Thomas and his girlfriend, Alexandria Galway. Both were on the shorter side for their age. They honestly looked like seventh graders instead of sophomores.
Unequivocally they're in the zone while performing Mozart, Alexandria's favorite composer. But, in truth, Alexandria was an angel of music, given her innate affinity for the arts. Lex adored how cultural and refined Alexandria was. They'd spent several dates at countless galleries, reviewing various well-known artists in great detail.
Honestly? Lex's only reason for learning to play the piano was to impress Alexandria. But, surprisingly, he had a natural affinity with this particular instrument. Therefore he ended up impressing himself!
The music was completed when Alexandria took a bow to their pretend fans. "Bravo, Lex! You're sincerely at your most exceptional today! I'm so proud of you!" as she kissed his cheek, causing him to redden.
"Thanks, Lexy. I'm thrilled to hear that. Now, how about we go over those SAT questions?" as he pulled out some practice worksheets. His girlfriend groaned theatrically at seeing them.
"I already know I'm going to fail the mathematics portion of this, Lex! However, I'm confident about the spelling and grammar portion," she replied while cleaning her silver flute.
"You've worked so hard in our study session to raise your math grade, Lexy! Have some faith in yourself. I know you suffer from dyscalculia. However, if you keep thinking negatively regarding it? You'll never be in the appropriate mindset to exceed expectations," her boyfriend reminded her.
She sighed in defeat before flinging her purple braid over her shoulder. "Okay, you don't have to guilt-trip me, Lex. Let's go over some of the questions."
He started to quiz her concerning the essay topics. For studying, starting in your comfort zone before working outward was essential. Lexy again had no problem with the language portion of the examination. That remained her strong suit while it remained Lex's weak point. His strength was in mathematics, which hers wasn't.
Lex had been doing his most desirable for weeks to encourage her to improve her mathematics skills. Everything and anything under the sun he utilized to help her. Both prayed it wasn't going to be in vain.
Today's practice test dealt with geometry. He'd brought visual aids to assist her. "Okay, I've brought up a map to help you figure this out. Now we're working with a three-mile radius. "So we're here," pointing to the X represents the academy. "Now, we need to figure out where the hidden object is in this three-mile radius."
"I still can't believe you're using a scenario from a Batman Beyond episode to prepare me. I don't like pretending to be looking for a bomb to learn this," she interjected.
"It's all I could find, Lexy! So, are we going to work on this or not?" he asked, slightly cross.
She was waving her hands in a peaceful gesture. "Okay! Don't get your undies in a twist!" sitting down to try and solve the problem. It took half an hour, but she eventually figured out this scenario. However, by the time she'd solved the problem? They only had twenty minutes to vacate the campus. "I'm sorry, Lex, I didn't realize I took up so much of our time!"
"No need to apologize, Lexy! Come on, my cousin Liz should be waiting for us," as they gathered their stuff and closed the music room behind them.
They walked a few minutes in silence before Alexandria spoke, "You're fortunate your aunt took you in after your mother died of ovarian cancer." she then slapped her forehead for her inconsiderate words.
Lex didn't like to speak about his mother's death. He never knew his father, as his mother raised him as a single parent. Its been less than two years since cancer took her life. Lex was still coming to terms with his mother's death.
"Lexy, please stop apologizing. I'm not upset with anything you've said. Yes, my mom is a touchy subject. However, I'm not angry with you for bringing it up. I know you love me and are there for me whenever I need you. One day I'll be ready to talk to you about my feelings. Possibly after the SATs, but today? Let's go home a relax, okay?"
"Yes, let's," as they walked hand in hand to his cousin's vehicle.
