Work Text:

Nayeon was beginning to really question her life decisions and perhaps even her own sanity. She hummed to herself, trying to distract the thoughts in her head telling her she’d made a huge mistake as she unloaded the supplies she’d just picked up from the pet store.

She already had bowls and a litter box, so she hadn’t needed to buy those while she was out, but apparently there was a lot more stuff cats needed to be happy indoors. She found a spot by the window for a small cat tree, cats liked those right? She then opened their pantry and started to move things around, trying to find the best place to store food and treats for their new roommate. She was so distracted by her own thoughts that she didn’t notice Jeongyeon come home until she started speaking.

“Uhh, unnie? What’s all this for?” Nayeon shrieked in surprise when Jeongyeon spoke, startled to find out she was no longer home alone. She turned around to see Jeongyeon rifling through the plastic bags she’d gotten from the pet store. She pulled out a little stuffed mouse with a bell on it, studying it in confusion. “Is this a cat toy?”

Nayeon didn’t really know how to respond, and she knew as she stood there that she looked guilty. Her eyes darted around the room, trying to look anywhere but at her roommate, but that only backfired, encouraging Jeongyeon to look around as well. Jeongyeon’s eyes landed on the bowls Nayeon had just placed on the floor, the bag of litter on the kitchen chair, and back at the toy in her hand.

Then, like some perfectly timed comedy show, they both heard a singular, small meow coming from the direction of Nayeon’s room. Jeongyeon’s eyes widened, and she quickly turned her gaze to Nayeon’s open door, where, right at the foot of it, was one very small and very fluffy pure white kitten.

“Unnie,” Jeongyeon spoke slowly, dropping the cat toy back on the table before leveling Nayeon with a serious gaze. “Is there something you’d like to tell me?” She raised her eyebrow in question. Thankfully, she didn’t seem to appear too angry, more so confused, and if Nayeon was honest, maybe even a little concerned.

“I got a cat,” Nayeon replied lamely, trying to appear nonchalant about it but knowing she was failing.

“So I’m to understand that you,” she pointed at Nayeon in emphasis, “you, Im Nayeon, willingly brought home a pet, despite your commitment to keeping this apartment spotless at all times? The same Im Nayeon that told me the only way you’d allow a pet in this apartment was if it was at least 5 years old, capable of using the toilet, and didn’t, quote, ‘smell like a cat’?”

“I don’t remember that conversation,” Nayeon lied, knowing she’d been called out. She knew Jeongyeon would bring up this conversation eventually, but she didn’t imagine she’d do it right out of the gates. But, she supposed she deserved it considering how dramatic she’d been when Jeongyeon suggested they get a cat for their apartment. “I love cats. I’ve always loved cats.”

“Unnie, you’re clearly lying! You told me you’d rather eat sand than get a pet!”

Geez, did she really say that? Maybe she really did need to work on toning it down a little bit.

“I changed my mind,” again, she tried to appear nonchalant, but it was obvious she wasn’t telling the whole story. But she’d much prefer to walk on hot coals than reveal the whole truth to Jeongyeon.

Another small mewl from her bedroom distracted them both again, but this time Nayeon moved to pick up her new companion. He was so small in Nayeon’s hand, and his little body was so delicate underneath all that fur. She walked over to where Jeongyeon was standing with the kitten in her arms.

Jeongyeon was staring at her in disbelief, obviously never having expected to see the day when Nayeon actually had a pet. “Would you like to meet him?” Jeongyeon nodded and Nayeon held still as he sniffed at Jeongyeon’s hand. The little white fluffball didn’t seem to have any problems with Jeongyeon, so Nayeon held the kitten out to her. “You can hold him if you’d like.”

Once the cat was in her arms, Jeongyeon immediately started cooing. Nayeon watched, endeared, as Jeongyeon gently ran her thumb over the kitten’s head and his soft ears.

Jeongyeon was right, of course, Nayeon had never really wanted a pet before, but she had to admit the kitten was cute. And Jeongyeon had been wanting to get a pet for the apartment for a while, so it all worked out. Everything was going to be just fine.

“What’s his name?” Jeongyeon finally asked, her voice quiet and soft so as not to disturb the kitten in her arms. Nayeon froze. She hadn’t really thought that far.

“Uh, he doesn’t have one yet, so I guess we can start thinking? Do you have any ideas?”

Jeongyeon walked to the couch and sat down, letting the kitten walk over her lap freely. Nayeon sat on the floor across from her, and they both studied the kitten as if watching him would inspire them with a name.

“What about Bami?” Jeongyeon eventually suggested. “I’ve always thought that would be a cute name for a cat.”

Nayeon shrugged. “It’s cute, I was never very good at naming things anyway. If you like it, let’s do it.”

“Do you like the name Bami?” Jeongyeon asked the kitten in a baby voice and giggled when he meowed in response. “Bami it is!”

They sat in relative silence while Jeongyeon played with the cat. The couch was too tall for him to jump down himself, so eventually Jeongyeon had to help him get back on the floor. He came up to Nayeon for a pet or two before going to explore the rest of the apartment.

“You’re going to have to tell me the real reason you got the cat eventually, you know,” Jeongyeon narrowed her eyes at Nayeon, as if she could read her mind if she tried hard enough. “I’ll get to the bottom of this.”

“I swear I just wanted a cat! And you’re going to have to accept that as an answer.” She couldn’t look Jeongyeon in the eye as she said it; did she have to be such a terrible liar?

Jeongyeon just narrowed her eyes further. She opened her mouth to speak, but whatever retort she was about to fire off with was interrupted by a knock at the door.

“Are we expecting someone?” Jeongyeon asked as she stood to get the door, causing Nayeon to jerk upright, her eyes wide. She was expecting someone, but she’d desperately hoped Jeongyeon wouldn’t be around when she got there.

“Oh, Mina-ssi, right?” Nayeon heard Jeongyeon say. “Are you here for Nayeon-unnie?”

Nayeon, personally, was in full panic mode knowing that Mina was actually here, that she was going to see Nayeon in her apartment and Nayeon didn’t prepare for it at all. When Jeongyeon turned to look at her, Nayeon quickly shook her head, holding up a finger desperately in a way to ask Jeongyeon to stall for time. Thankfully, her roommate seemed to get the hint, and Nayeon heard her tell Mina she’d be ready in a moment.

Nayeon quickly glanced around the apartment, making sure it didn’t appear too messy, and thankfully her obsession with keeping the place tidy came in handy.

As she was looking around, she happened to catch a glimpse of herself in the mirror, only to see that her hair was in a complete state of disarray. Was it windy outside earlier? How did her hair become such a mess?

She chanced a look at the door, where Jeongyeon and Mina were currently catching up, and decided she had enough time to run to the bathroom and brush through her hair. She only saw Mina for a brief second, but she could already tell she looked beautiful. There was no way she was going to greet a goddess like her while looking like a gremlin.

While she was in the bathroom, she decided to touch up her makeup, because why not? What’s the harm in putting on a little more lipstick or maybe some extra blush? She tried not to put on too much, Mina had just seen her that morning so she couldn’t look radically different, but she figured a little bit couldn’t hurt.

She still could hear Mina and Jeongyeon talking in the living room, when suddenly she realized that that wasn’t necessarily a good thing. Who knows what embarrassing things Jeongyeon might be saying about her?

See, Nayeon knew Mina from university. They had recently been put in a group project for their Korean History class, and for Nayeon, it had been love at first sight.

Okay, maybe not love, but definitely interest. Mina was undeniably beautiful, with her cute gummy smile and her long hair that was often tied back with pretty ribbons. Nayeon was entranced from the first moment she saw Mina laugh.

Then, they actually began work on their project, and she got to know more of Mina’s personality. In class, Mina came off as very shy, and even as she introduced herself to their group her voice was soft and quiet. But, when they needed a group leader she was the first to volunteer. She took her work very seriously, and had no qualms with bossing people around.

Nayeon practically had whiplash trying to keep up with the many sides of Mina she saw in such a short amount of time.

Nayeon saw it as a great accomplishment the first time she made Mina smile. She wanted to keep joking around, to keep being the reason she heard Mina laugh, but the second she was sent a look from Team Leader Mina, Nayeon instantly sobered up, making it her mission for the project to go as smoothly for the team as possible, just so Mina might possibly be proud of her.

Geez, crushes were so embarrassing.

But luckily, embarrassing herself for the sake of approval from her crush worked! One day after meeting with the project team, just a few weeks into the semester, Mina asked Nayeon if she could stay back with her a little longer. Despite being tired and wanting to go home, Nayeon couldn’t miss out on rare one-on-one time with Mina, so she agreed right away.

They went to a cafe together in order to re-caffeinate before continuing the project, but they quickly found themselves distracted. They probably spent a good two hours or so at the cafe together, laughing and talking about anything in the world other than Korean History. Nayeon even bought them a slice of chocolate cake to share, and even though she couldn’t for the life of her remember how it tasted, she knew for sure it was the best slice of cake she’s ever had.

So yeah, after that day she and Mina became closer, much to Nayeon’s delight. They never really hung out outside of class or project meetings, but they would at least sit next to each other in lecture now and they’d text occasionally. She liked being Mina’s friend. Nayeon knew she still wanted to ask for more, but figured it was best to wait, at least until the semester was over. She didn’t want to throw off the dynamics of their project team just because she didn’t have any patience.

One time, they were meeting at the cafe after a project meeting and they ran into Jeongyeon. Nayeon had tried to hide herself from Jeongyeon’s notice but her attempt was futile, and she was begrudgingly forced to introduce her roommate to Mina. That had been embarrassing. The second Nayeon got home that afternoon, Jeongyeon was interrogating her about her obvious crush. Nayeon was torn between her annoyance at her roommate and her fear that Mina could see through her just as easily.

It might not have been the most successful of love stories so far, but that was all how she got into her current predicament. That morning, she and Mina met up for coffee after a project meeting, but something had been off about Mina all day. Once Mina’s shyness had started to wear off, it was clear she was usually a pretty bubbly and excitable person. Her mood that morning didn’t seem to match her usual vibe at all.

“Are you alright, Mina?” She’d asked with furrowed brows as she sipped from her coffee.

“No, I’m sad,” she pouted, and despite herself Nayeon had no choice but to find it cute, at least a little.

“Do you want to talk about it?” She prompted. She’d hoped she didn’t sound too forward, she didn’t want to be poking her nose somewhere she didn’t belong, but if she could at least provide a little comfort, she’d be happy.

“My roommates and I found a stray kitten in front of our apartment. He was there for a few days before we decided no one was coming for him and took him in ourselves. But my apartment doesn’t allow pets! So now I’m looking for a home for him and no one will take him!” She pouted again, before dropping her forehead onto the table in front of her.

“Oh,” Nayeon said lamely, not sure how to respond. She’d noticed before that Mina had an affinity for cats, often doodling them in the margins of her papers or sharing a particularly cute cat video she found online.

Nayeon, on the other hand, had never been much of a pet person. She didn’t have any pets growing up, and often shied away from her friends’ pets when she visited, afraid they’d bite her hand or something. And Nayeon didn’t like mess, and pets definitely didn’t care about their owner’s opinions when it came to that.

But, Mina looked so hopeless, her eyes glassy and mouth screwed into a pout that Nayeon was three seconds away from attempting to kiss away if she didn’t just do something, so that’s how she found herself saying, “I’ll take him in.”

Mina looked surprised (a feeling Nayeon definitely shared, she hadn’t been expecting to say it either), but then her eyes widened and sparkled as she gave Nayeon the biggest smile she’d ever seen from her. She reached across the table, grabbing Nayeon’s hands in hers and squeezing lightly. “Really, unnie? You’ll adopt him?” Nayeon hoped her hands weren’t too sweaty and she tried to maintain her blush. She nodded in response, pretty positive she wouldn’t be able to speak right now if she tried.

“Thank you so much! Oh my god,” she released Nayeon’s hands, and Nayeon tried not to think about how cold they suddenly felt. Mina pulled out her phone, texting someone furiously before she stood up suddenly. “I’m having my roommate get some of his stuff together right now, so it’ll be ready for you when you pick him up.” Nayeon sat frozen while Mina looked at her expectantly, she didn’t know what Mina was waiting for.

“Oh, sorry unnie! Maybe I got a little overexcited,” Mina quickly sat back down. “You’re not done with your coffee yet, we can leave whenever you’re ready.”

“Leave?” Nayeon asked, before it finally dawned on her. “You mean...pick him up t-today?” She wouldn’t even get a chance to ask Jeongyeon about this, she never checked her phone during work.

Mina explained that her landlord was already catching on that they had possibly smuggled a cat into the apartment, having caught them carrying a box of litter up the stairs a few days ago, and she needed the cat out as soon as possible to avoid getting in trouble.

So, that’s how Nayeon found herself on the metro with Mina, at Mina’s apartment, with a fluffy white kitten in her hands, back on the metro with a handful of supplies while Mina held the cat carrier, and now in her own apartment, alone aside from her brand new kitten.

It all passed in a blur, the time between Nayeon agreeing to take the cat then actually being in possession of it. Mina had left soon after arriving at Nayeon’s apartment, promising to be back later with a few other toys, which she remembered she’d left at her own apartment.

Which left her where she was now. In the bathroom, touching up her makeup while her roommate stalled her crush outside. She psyched herself up to leave the bathroom, only to open the door and find the kitten sitting outside it waiting for her. He looked up at her with pleading eyes so Nayeon plucked him up, figuring Mina would want to see how he’s settling in anyway.

“Ah, there’s Nayeon-unnie,” Jeongyeon said flatly when Nayeon re-emerged, clearly unamused at having to stall for so long. She raised her eyebrow at Nayeon, noting her slightly altered appearance, but thankfully she didn’t say anything.

Jeongyeon and Mina had moved to the kitchen while Nayeon was getting ready, and it looked like Jeongyeon was making tea for all of them. Mina turned around when Jeongyeon announced Nayeon’s entrance, her eyes lighting up when she spotted Bami in her arms.

“Ah, unnie!” She exclaimed excitedly, running over to pet the kitten. “I’m glad to see Ray is already settling in nicely.”

“Ray?” Nayeon asked, not sure what Mina was talking about. She handed the kitten to Mina to hold. Nayeon was really starting to see the appeal of kittens. The two of them together were like...cuteness overload.

“Oh, sorry, that’s just what me and my roommate called him when we were watching him. You don’t have to name him that though! Silly me, you’ve probably already given him your own.” She pouted, and forgive Nayeon, but she just looked so cute, how was she to deny her anything?

“Yeah actu-”

“No, we haven’t even considered names yet!” Nayeon interrupted Jeongyeon in a panic. From behind Mina, Jeongyeon shot her her best what the hell? face, which Nayeon promptly ignored. “Ray is a perfect name for him, did you think of that yourself? I love it! Much better than anything Jeongyeon and I would’ve come up with,” Nayeon was word-vomiting at this point, unable to stop herself from digging herself into a further hole. She was lucky Jeongyeon was so forgiving.

“Really? I always thought Ray would be an adorable pet name!” Mina looked so pleased that Nayeon was willing to use her name choice. “Again, thank you so much for taking him for me, you were a real life-saver unnie! I don’t know what I would’ve done if you hadn’t volunteered.”

“Of course, I’m just glad I could help,” Nayeon responded softly, her lips curling into a small smile as she watched Mina play with Bami, no - Ray’s ears. She caught movement from behind Mina, and saw Jeongyeon looking back and forth between her and Mina. Nayeon cringed as she realized that Jeongyeon must have put two and two together and finally figured out exactly why Nayeon brought a cat home.

Because Mina is pretty and lovely and kind and Nayeon is weak and weak and weak.

Much to Nayeon’s dismay, Mina did not stay much longer after that. She went over a few more things about Ray and his behavior (apparently he loves salmon? Is Nayeon going to start buying salmon for this cat?) before starting to head out.

“Can I get a picture of you with him before I leave, unnie? So I can show my roommates he’s well taken care of,” Mina asked excitedly as she pulled out her phone. Nayeon nodded, already fixing her hair to try to look as best as she could, even if it was just a silly picture.

Mina handed Ray back to her, and Nayeon lifted him so his little whiskers brushed against her cheek, smiling cutely for the camera. Mina turned her phone around so Nayeon could see after snapping the picture, and Nayeon’s eyes widened in panic.

“Oh my god, delete that, I look crazy!” she tried to take Mina’s phone from her, not wanting this to be the picture Mina remembered her by. It wasn’t the worst picture Nayeon had ever taken, but she knew she could do better than that.

“No!” Mina clutched her phone to her chest protectively. “I like it, and Ray’s looking right at the camera, do you understand how rare that is for a cat? You look cute, unnie, I like it.”

Nayeon blushed, her cheeks heating up at the compliment. She buried her face into Ray’s fur to hide her reaction from Mina, but judging by her smirk, Nayeon wasn’t sure how effective it was.

Mina started putting on her shoes, and Nayeon tried not to be too disappointed at the sight of Mina leaving.

“Well, I’ll see you in class, unnie,” Mina smiled at her. “Send me pictures of him, okay? I want to know if he's doing alright. And let me know if you have any questions!”

Nayeon said her goodbyes, wishing Mina could stay a little longer. Both because she enjoyed her company, and because she was dreading the conversation she’d have to have with Jeongyeon the second they were alone again.

When the door closed behind Mina, Nayeon turned around slowly, sheepishly making eye contact with her roommate. Ray squirmed in her arms, so she bent over awkwardly to let him back on the floor without hurting him, her eyes not leaving Jeongyeon’s. When she was upright again, she and Jeongyeon stared each other down, daring the other to break the silence first. Finally, Jeongyeon burst into laughter.

“So what the hell was that?” The humor was extremely evident in her voice, and Nayeon groaned in embarrassment, covering her face to hide her shame.

“Don’t make fun of me!” She spoke into her hands, and Jeongyeon only laughed harder.

“I see how it is. When I want a cat, it’s stinky and hairy, but when Mina wants a cat, it’s a brilliant idea. Wow you are not subtle.”

“She cornered me,” Nayeon finally dropped her hands to defend herself. “You have no idea. She was all pouty and sad and adorable talking about how the cat had nowhere to go. She nearly cried. I was just supposed to ignore that?”

“I think the funniest part of it,” Jeongyeon hardly acknowledged Nayeon’s explanation, “Is that you thought I’d never find out. Mina is so honest that it took one quick conversation for the truth to come out.”

Nayeon sat on the couch in an effort to escape the conversation, but as soon as she did, Ray started pawing at her legs to be picked up. Nayeon obliged, the little white fluffball growing on her already, and Ray settled comfortably on her lap.

“Also,” Jeongyeon continued, and Nayeon rolled her eyes, “Don’t think I’m going to just ignore that little name switch-a-roo. What happened to Bami, huh?” She smirked teasingly, which at least she wasn’t actually upset, but why couldn’t she let Nayeon live?

“Ray is cute, isn’t it?” Nayeon responded weakly, knowing she didn’t really have a defense here. In her lap, Ray started purring. “See! Even he likes it.”

“I’ll admit that it fits him better,” Jeongyeon conceded. “But you owe me, unnie.”

Nayeon sighed dramatically. “What do you want?” Given the humor in Jeongyeon’s eyes, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to hear the answer.

———

“Oh my god, they’re so cute together,” Mina cooed at the two kittens toppling over each other.

Jeongyeon had definitely taken advantage of the favor Nayeon owed her when she panic-adopted Ray. Nayeon and Jeongyeon were now the proud parents of not one, but two little kittens: Ray and Bami, of course. Jeongyeon made sure she got to name the new cat.

Nayeon was worried at first that the two wouldn’t get along, but thankfully that didn’t seem to be a problem. Ever since they brought Bami home, Ray had barely left his side. Nayeon was almost thankful for having the second kitten around; the two of them tired each other out so much that she found she was no longer the target of Ray’s little bursts of energy.

Not that they didn’t play together. Despite her earlier reservations about pet ownership, she found she really did enjoy having Ray around. She actually might be a little too attached to him now, loathing any time she has to leave her apartment now for class or to meet friends. She’d rather just stay home cuddled up with him on the couch. She even let him onto her bed now, unwilling to part with him even at night.

Where Ray was white and fluffy, Bami was his exact opposite. Jet black with short, sleek fur. But he was just as loveable. Nayeon and Jeongyeon had already scheduled a photoshoot so the four of them could commemorate their new little family.

The best part of all of it, though, was now Nayeon had all the excuses in the world to text Mina.

Mina had instantly fallen in love with Bami the first time Nayeon sent a photo of him, demanding Nayeon give him at least two treats, from her.

Oh my god, he’s amazing
I’m obsessed already
are you sure you and Jeongyeon-ssi don’t need a third roommate?

Now that sounded tempting. Nayeon had room in her bed if Mina was interested.

No, too fast. One step at a time Nayeon.

Nayeon sent photos of the kittens whenever she could; Ray sleeping soundly on her bed, Bami climbing up Jeongyeon’s leg, even a particularly embarrassing one that Jeongyeon took of Nayeon after she fell asleep, with Ray and Bami flopped on top of her.

That last one had been sent by Jeongyeon against Nayeon’s will. Jeongyeon insisted it was cute, but Nayeon was worried she looked ridiculous. But then Mina replied, calling her adorable. Her, not just the cats. And suddenly Nayeon forgot why she was ever upset, her mind hyper focused on the word “adorable” for the rest of the afternoon.

Mina, Mina, thought she was adorable.

It was the boost of confidence Nayeon needed to finally invite Mina over to her apartment. No group project, no pretenses, just the two of them hanging out. She couldn’t even hide her smile when Mina agreed immediately. She laid on the couch, smiling at her phone like a maniac until Ray and Bami starting meowing for their dinner.

So that’s how they found themselves now. Mina and Nayeon on their knees, sides pressed together as they both watched the cats play. Jeongyeon was out, so it was just the two of them for the afternoon.

Mina always made Nayeon flustered, and now it was made even worse given their proximity. Nayeon usually was comfortable, even confident, around women she was interested in, but it was different with Mina. She was…powerful and intimidating and gorgeous and sexy and…

Nayeon reigned her thoughts back in quickly.

There was just something about Mina that made her so overwhelmed. Nayeon just hoped that by the end of the night, she’d work up enough courage to ask Mina out for real, instead of always hiding behind her cat.

Bami and Ray stopped fighting and began exploring their surroundings. Bami came sniffing at Mina, and after asking Nayeon for permission, she bent over to pick him up.

“He’s so soft,” she cooed, running her fingers through his fur, paying special attention to his ears. “I love their ears, you know? Aren’t they just the cutest?” Mina turned to look at Nayeon, her face soft and glowing in the afternoon light.

Nayeon froze under her gaze. With Mina looking at her, Nayeon couldn’t think rationally. Mina’s hair was down today, framing her face loosely. Her bands were slightly in her face after bending over to pick up Bami, and they were practically begging Nayeon to tuck them behind her ear. Nayeon felt her fingers twitch with the urge to reach out, but thankfully she was able to control her hands.

The same couldn’t be said about her mouth.

“You’d look cute with cat ears!” She blurted out, covering her mouth immediately after the last word left her lips. Mina’s eyes widened at the outburst. But then…

Then she smiled shyly, turning away as she giggled so Nayeon could no longer see her face. But not before Nayeon saw her cheeks glow the prettiest shade of pink.

“I mean-” Nayeon struggled to find a way to take the words back but…what if she didn’t want to? Mina would look cute with cat ears, she wasn’t wrong! And it wasn’t like Mina ran away at the compliment. Maybe this was Nayeon’s chance. “I mean you’re always cute,” she somehow found herself saying. “The ears would just…accentuate it.”

Mina’s head whipped back up to stare at her, wide-eyed, and Bami squirmed out of her grasp at being jostled. Her cheeks were rosy again, and this time Nayeon revelled in the fact that she could actually see it.

Mina bit her lip to try to stop her growing smile, and Nayeon was absolutely enraptured by how beautiful she was. She was so distracted from just staring at her, between her cute blush, the freckle on her nose, the two around her lips, her lips. She barely even registered Mina speaking.

“Huh?” she asked dumbly. Her own cheeks heated up when Mina laughed at her. Nayeon was clearly caught staring.

“I said I don’t think cat ears would suit you,” Mina said with a teasing glint in her eye. Nayeon huffed in mock (and honestly a little bit of real) offense. Everything suited her! But Mina continued. “I think bunny ears would suit you better, don’t you agree?”

Nayeon laughed, taken aback at the unexpected comment. It wasn’t the first time she’d been compared to a bunny of course. It got a little annoying sometimes, but coming from Mina she found she didn’t mind it at all. She wouldn’t mind being her bunny, if that’s what she wanted.

“You know, kittens and bunnies get along pretty well. Would you ever consider getting a bunny as well?” Mina asked. If Nayeon wasn’t crazy, she’d say that Mina was slowly inching closer to her. But Nayeon had to be crazy, right?

She laughed somewhat nervously under her breath. “I think it’s very clear that if you asked, I’d do it,” Nayeon replied honestly. “But I think two kittens is enough for now.”

“You’re right, unnie. Maybe a bunny is too much to ask. What about,” Mina paused, searching for Nayeon’s eyes, smiling when she found them. “What about a girlfriend?” Nayeon gasped. “Are you in the market for one of those, unnie?”

Nayeon was in shock. She had anticipated working up the courage to ask Mina out then get politely rejected, yet here Mina was, asking her out. And this time, Mina really was coming closer, and Nayeon couldn’t keep her eyes off of her.

“I think I’ve made it very clear,” Nayeon swallowed as she took in Mina’s face up close. Her eyes kept flickering to Mina’s lips. “That if you’re the one asking-“

Nayeon’s words were cut off as Mina kissed her. Nayeon froze briefly, before finally coming to her senses. She let herself melt into the kiss. She gave into her earlier instinct and let her hand brush through Mina’s hair, reveling in the quiet sigh Mina released at the feeling.

Nayeon’s whole body felt warm with Mina so close, and she never wanted it to stop. Their lips separated for a moment before Mina kissed her again. Two more times. All short and sweet and addicting in a way Nayeon wasn’t sure she’d ever get used to.

When Mina finally pulled back, Nayeon was thankful to see she didn’t move too far. They were still breathing the same air, smiling shyly at each other.

“I think I’ve made it very clear that I’d do anything for you,” Nayeon finished her earlier thought. The pleased smile she got in return made her heart want to burst.

Mina reached over and interlaced their hands, placing them both in her own lap. “And I hope I’ve made it clear that I feel the same way.” Mina squeezed her hand in a show of affection that made Nayeon want to squeal in excitement.

She leaned in for another kiss, unable to resist how beautiful Mina was sitting in front of her. Before their lips met, though, they were quite loudly interrupted by two impatient kittens yowling for attention.

Nayeon glared at them, her jealousy increasing when Mina immediately scooped them both up, all her attention on them rather than Nayeon. Mina may deny it, but those cats knew what they were doing. They were messing with her!

Mina stood up, only then noticing Nayeon’s expression. She laughed at the way Nayeon squinted her eyes at the kittens before she pulled Nayeon up to join her. “Come on, want to cuddle on the couch with us?”

And Nayeon would never, never, say no to that.
