Chapter Text
This work is in partnership with the Argo City Exchange Event and part of a fantastic collaboration with Sexy-Bread.png. I had an amazing time collaborating with Mickey and coming up with some amazing fluff tooth rotting fluff for you.
We hope you enjoy!
Lena was exhausted.
She had had enough of L-Corp, enough of meetings, enough of stupid questions, and there was nothing more she wanted than to come home to her girlfriend and relax. To just sit on the couch, watch Top Gun or some other sad horrible romantic comedy, and fall asleep with Kara’s strong arms around her. She wanted the feeling of weightlessness that came when Kara held her, the way she was able to make her forget everything from her day. She knows she shouldn't have picked up the takeout, she shouldn't have broken the ‘ no takeout’ rule. Something she had enforced when Kara ate nearly fifty potstickers in a night, and when Lena had gained ten pounds not long after moving in with Kara. But today was one of those days, one of the days where she wanted to forget, to relax and not worry about her work.
As soon as the car pulls up to the sidewalk, Lena's out of the vehicle, ready to step out of the Louboutin and into the sweats and Kara's oversized t-shirt she knows she has waiting in the top drawer of the closet.
She should have known, she should have suspected something would go wrong.
After all, it had been a week since her quarterly assassination attempt and Kara hadn't made any extravagant show. She had been there for nearly every lunch date that she could, something Lena had always been thankful for. Kara was always more attentive after the attempts, always in Lena's space, but the last week had been busy for both of them; Lena with L-Corp and Kara with Supergirl on top of being a Catco reporter. It took up so much of their time that there was often little room left for them. Much like this week, there had been little room for them.
The elevator dings, and as she steps out she should immediately want to run in the opposite direction like any normal person because she can smell something . Lena isn't sure a 100% what it is, but she finds herself drawn toward her door. After opening the door with the biometric lock, she's surprised to find Kara in the kitchen, in her boxers and vest, frantically patting out a burning fire.
Kara is an excellent cook. She has made Thanksgiving dinner. Kara has managed to keep herself alive for a number of years on more than just potstickers and pizza contrary to popular belief. Even Eliza has praised her for the chilli she made two weeks ago.
She could make some koftas for dinner. It was only some fried lamb in pitta bread. How wrong Kara was. She had done the yoghurt and made the sausages as instructed by the patronising man's voice. She had shredded the salad and kale despite breaking two of Lena's overly expensive knives, but she had at least tried to pull them back into the correct shape. She had followed the instructions to the letter . Precisely, even going back to double and triple check before moving on to the next step.
So for the life of her, she could not understand why the kale was burning.
She just wanted to cook a nice meal, a good healthy dinner for her girlfriend who had put up with so much over the past month. The assassination attempts, the board trying to get rid of her for her brother (who was still technically in prison). Even so much as the public painting her as public enemy number one because a component had gone wrong in one of the self-driving cars that Lena hadn't signed off on and didn't even know had gone into production.
Kara had just wanted to do something nice, something that Lena could enjoy without having to think about her work, or the pains she had recently gone through.
But now Kara was standing with burnt kale, burnt pitta's and now burning lamb...
"Shit."
A burst of laughter makes her turn to find Lena standing laughing. In her hands are pizza and potstickers, and Kara's never wanted to hold her quite so much.
"I-I just wanted to make you a nice meal," Kara explains, defeated by the cooking. She moves, settling her hands on Lena's hips and the CEO slips a hand under the collar of her shirt.
"As much as I appreciate the thought, I don't think our kitchen can handle it." Lena's smiling wider than Kara's seen all week and it almost makes her miss the burning smell behind her. "Speaking of burning our kitchen down, maybe you should turn off the hob?"
Kara moves with superspeed and is quickly turning all the dials off. But not before the lamb catches fire in the pan and Kara's using her freeze breath to put it out. She turns to Lena with a small pathetic grin on her face. "I tried."
Lena snorts out a burst of laughter as she moves into their apartment, it had been a downsize for Lena but definitely an upsize for Kara. Something that suited both of them and it was the first place Lena had said where she fells like home.
"I'm glad I took the initiative and got take out," Lena calls as she moves into the bedroom, the warm colours Kara had painted the walls inviting her in. It made Kara's smile almost touch her eyes as she heard the soft pad of Lena's footsteps. Kara tries to cover the smell of burning Mediterranean food but is largely unsuccessful as Lena returns, stepping up behind her and wrapping her arms around Kara's waist. Kara smiles, settling in to let Lena just enjoy the embrace for a moment. She knows Lena gets like this when it's stressful when there's a lot on her mind.
"I love you," Lena whispers into Kara's shoulder blades.
"I love you too," Kara says without delay. As Lena slowly pulls away, she turns, moving back to the living room where she had left the pizza. Kara smiles in her direction while following like a magnet to Lena. As Kara settles on the couch she watches Lena for a moment and is reminded that today was a bad day. Her back is tense and straight, and Lena is perche on the couch like she's about to run to the next fire. Kara shifts, gently taking Lena's hand and pulling her down with her. Kara runs her hands over the knotted tension of Lena's back and slowly, she feels the CEO begin to relax.
"Wanna talk about it?" Kara asks after several moments of silence. Lena looks up from her position with her head on Kara's shoulder and smiles. Kara's heart melts at the sight of Lena like this, her dimples flashing as there's nothing but love in her eyes.
"No, you've already made everything better."
"I ruined your dinner," Kara protests, jabbing her thumb over her shoulder at the offending pan now in the trash. "The dinner I tried to make so you would feel better."
Lena lets out a light bark of laughter, "Kara, as much as I appreciate the thought, you didn't have to do that for me. I know I haven't been great company but-"
"But I wanted to. You work so hard Lena, you deserve a night of good food and just relaxation," Kara protests, and it makes Lena laugh.
Letting her head drop onto Kara's shoulder she let out a soft sigh of contentment.
"I may not need good food Kara, but I do need you," Lena whispers into the softness of Kara's shirt. "You keep me sane in all the hype."
Kara holds Lena close until their stomachs grumble and they eat the takeout Lena has brought in. As Kara watches Lena lie back watching while Tom Cruise screams for his partner, Kara realises she’s learnt a valuable lesson about her girlfriend. Lena doesn't need fancy things or the glitz and glamour that often comes with the Luthor name. She just needs an old 80's film, takeout and the arms of the woman she loves wrapped around her.
