Work Text:
It was between work and training so Greg was on his way for a coffee, and that was when he first met Mycroft. He saw the red head who looked slightly lost, well not exactly lost visibly but the man didn't seem to quite know where to go but not in such a way that made him stand out, so Greg took that as easy excuse to go talk to him. The ginger had easily pulled himself from looking around for where or whoever he had been searching for. The look he gave Greg had seemed unimpressed before he began talking. Greg ignored the flimsy excuse the man made for being there but he did get an introduction and name after a few moments. As they continued talking Greg found Mycroft more and more charming and sweet. Greg smiled but as he checked the time swearing lightly before throwing Mycroft a sheepish smile and asked for his number and handing the man his phone out to him. Mycroft took the phone after a few moment and put his number into the phone causing Greg to smile at the man and sent a message to the others number.
[Dinner sometime? -Greg]
He looked up from his own phone to see Mycroft pulling his phone out to check the text and saw the slight smile he gave and Gregs grin widened when he got his own text in response with a date and time. Greg gave a small laugh, "I'll see you then. I gotta get back. I look forward to seeing you again." he said and turned heading back the way he'd came rushing in his movement, only slightly upset he'd missed grabbing his coffee.
The date went well and was one of the few ones that went to plan or were easy to plan. Turns out Mycroft was a work-a-holic but Greg was just as dedicated to his own job, working out towards getting his promotions as well so he couldn't really blame him, at least they figured that out early in their relationship. Mycroft seemed happy through the dates they had, he asked questions, returning the ones Greg asked back at him. Greg enjoyed talking of his family, the job he did and where he was aiming for with it. Mycroft seemed to be amazing at listening whenn they were talking, though he did contribute enough for the conversations to not feel one sided, and they both loved keeping each other company.
Slowly Greg began instead learning more basic meals to cook himself for them both to eat at one of their own homes instead. This led to them spending more time together. Though they ended up with take aways just as often. Mycroft even gave Greg a key to his home after a few months of these types of dates. Those nights often ended with the pair of them reading/working on a couch Greg usually lying across the couch his head leaning on the other mans lap. Mycroft had seemed unsure at first but hadn't pushed him away and after a few times got used to the action even at times his hand finds his way into Gregs hair. More then once over their relationship Greg found himself falling asleep in this position.
Two years into their relationship Greg had ordered in for their anninversary part way through the meal as Mycroft was making slight complaints about the assistant he'd just had fired and finally moved on to giving some rare compliments to the newly hired assistant he had. It was part way through the conversation, a rare one led by Mycroft, that Greg said the words, he didn't even realised he spoke the "I love you" slipped out as he was watching the man talk fondly across the table. Gregs smile slowly fell as he saw Mycroft freeze words. He watched as the ginger man straightened in his seat, stiffening and his eyes moving away from Greg completely after a short moment. When he met Greg's eye's again it seemed like all of his emotions had left them, no emotions were even visible on his face as he raised a condesending eyebrow at the man without a single word. Looking down Greg gave an awkward light cough and picks up his glass of wine taking a large drink. "Right sorry, that.. didn' mean to say that." He said with a sheepish smile eye's moving to stay on his food. After he finishs the food he made a half baked excuse to leave faster then he usually would and Mycroft didn't try and call him out on it, so it seems they both found the evening as awkward as the other.
The next time the pair met together was out at a restaurant, Greg faked smiles as Mycroft made comments against the more PDA showing couples around them this continued through other dates and it took Greg two more months of dates for him to cut the man off mid comment about ''stupid ordinary people" and the uselessness of sentiment to defend others and himself sick of the continious jabs.
"You know what Myc. I honestly don't get what you want, I said it and you know what I regret it now to - I do. But I meant it. I Love you. God know's why but I do, but you not feeling the same doesn't mean you get to be a bastard about it." He said bluntly in a tight voice.
Mycroft had stopped and watched him with a blank expression raising a single eyebrow. "I do not believe I should have to deal with such emotional out bursts or.. whatever it is you're having Gregory. I never hid my dislike of sentiment." he drawled in response and Greg's mouth fell open.
"Yes Mycroft yes you did. Nothing about our two year relationship made me think that me think that you would suddenly cut me out for actually telling you that I.. Telling you that." He replies when Mycroft just rolls his eyes Greg pushs himself up from his chair without finishing his food, "Noted. I'll see you around Mycroft, I'm.. Im done with this because I deserve better." he said and moves to the front room grabbing the books and bag that were his own before heading out the front door briefly being caught by the arm at the door but when Mycroft didn't say anything and didn't seem to know what to say Greg sighed "Mycroft let go. I'm just.. an ordinary sentimental guy, obviously I'm not your type." he said simply and Mycroft pulls away eyebrows drawing together from the continued use of his full first name from the man but he stepped back silently. Greg went opening the door not looking at the man. "G'bye Myc." He said finally heading out the door still not getting a reply as he closes the door behind himself.
The first time he got flowers was a few days later and he was in the middle of New Scotland Yard, they were beautiful, not exactly ones he hated or loved but he looked at the card with a basic half hearted attempt at an apology on it and barely held back on throwing them out. He ends up giving the roses to a newbie that was working with him from time to time, she seems to like them and definitely sympathises better about the story then some of the guys he works with. Sally decided they were friends after that, which led to her dragging him for drinks and then having ice cream on the weekend to avoid 'the bigoted old white men' from work which he finds funny enough to allow. The apology gifts continued to come for another week. In that time the flower's slowly got closer to his favourite's and small gift's most of which end up in his bedroom draw's. Then there was one gift a thin silver chain Mycroft sent that he did like wearing under his shirt hidden from view. There was times he wondered whether or not it was actually Mycroft choosing and sending the gift or the assistant he was fond of.
During a night of alcohol and ice cream not long later, when Sallys current 'partner' had called off on their plans Greg realises that Mycroft had never actually told his anything about his family except a vague comment about an annoying younger brother when Greg had brought up his own sister. Sally hums and had decides the to drag him out to an actual bar and poke him into talking to someone to meet someone new the next night. It was on one of those nights that Greg met his wife.
----
It was many years later just as Greg made Detective inspector and was recently devorce after finding out his wife had been cheating on him when a young man turned up on his crime scene. It was very obvious the man was high, almost unable to stand properly as he looked across the murder scene they where at and started spouting far to much information about the case and telling them where to find the killer all while calling his team idiots. Greg took the man by the arm as he told the team to investigate what the kid had said. He took Sherlock back to NSY, the kid introduced himself in the car, sitting him in an investigation room and got him to explain in detail how he figured each thing out. After this he took the kid to a holding cell to sober up and contacted Sally as he did paper work to find out that the kid had been right ith what he said and the murderer even gave a confession when they found him. This repeated a few times.
The next morning after the fourth or fifth time Greg got the kid from the cell and finding out he didn't have anywhere to just go decided to bring the, now sober, twenty something year old back to his own flat and passed him a phone to call what ever family member wouldnt kill him. After a moment sherlock instead asked if they found the murderer and Greg made a decision telling him he'd been right, and that if he wanted to actually continue doing this.. 'consulting' he had to get sober properly and stay that way well enough to do it. Sherlock agreed slightly even as he looked as he was lying and greg took his phone back and called in taking the next week off deciding to help the kid get past the start of the withdrawals when he seemed reluctant to call his family, brother from what the muttered words sounded like. After a week of doing his best to stay with the kid and help him out Sherlock finally asked for the phone ready to call his brother. At somepoint while waiting for the brother Greg had wrapped a blue scarf around the kids neck with a comment about his shivering and him being obviously chill and sherlock while trying to seem aloof shifted the scarf around himself in a different position and relaxed into the seat and instead turned to ranting about his 'stuck up annoying mother hen of an older brother' Greg listened slightly amused and when he got the message from the elder brother that he was almost there he handed Sherlock a card.
"Here, in case you want someone who's not your brother to talk to during whatever rehab he decides to send you to." Greg had only half joked and at that moment Sherlock placed the card in his shirt pocket and someone knocked at the door. Greg moved to the door as Sherlock pulled himself to his feet making sure he had everything. Greg opened the door to see a familiar face and barely a second later slammed the door closed again and closed his eyes for a moment before looking at Sherlock. "Holmes?" he asked in a quiet strained tone and sherlock nodded looking amused.
"Gregory do open the door." Came the calm voice from the other side of the door as Mycroft knocked again. Greg straighten buttoning his shirt higher to hide the chain before opening the door again and shifting to the side waving the man towards his brother. Mycroft walked in not looking at the man instead heading to Sherlock. He watched the pair bounce comments back and forth easily and Greg watched in slight amusement. Sherlock gave him a nod as he left and Mycroft paused at the door for a moment before his eyes dropped to the wedding ring that was still on his finger and just mimicked his brothers exit.
Greg watched them go closing the door behind them and dropped onto the couch with a sigh after that realising hed just some how got himself tied back into mycrofts life and by the way Sherlock seemed it didnt seem like he was going to be able to get rid of the kid even if he wanted to. He wasn't sure he really wanted to get rid of the kid anyway. He will have to learn how to deal with knowing that Mycroft would be there to.
