🎠This is rather an explanation to Smith / Quentin as a phenomenon.
I'm always trying to stay close to canon, but it's my own way of reading and a few slight changes are added in my stories about their personality. So let's say, it's subjective, as always.
It ISN'T even JUST about shipping the two characters, it never was.
The duo of Smith and Quentin (the disaster duo, to be exact) is much more.
There's (or there was?) a lot of possibility in the two characters.
The thing is, the two characters are damn opposites, as you saw in Hello Guest.
🕵Smith is colorless and cold, while Quentin is colorful and has a warm personality. Probably extroverted, likes people, while Smith stays alone and doesn't interact with anyone, if possible.
🚲At a point, both of them act cool and both of them fail. Quentin arrives at the park to protect it,but wakes up in the middle of it, almost goes back to sleep, and then realizes that he's got there somehow. He gets kidnapped by a giant humanoid bird, after always closing the door on his finger.
Smith acts cool. He throws the spray from one hand to another, thinks he just puts the clients to his car and drives away with them. He probably plans, while Quentin lives for the moment. His appearance in the ending is cool until the point, where he miserably fails in a fight against Guest.
🚠despite them being opposites, there's a few things in common(mentioned above), which could bring the boys together.
You can imagine their relationship the way you want to.
Nemesis/ Not enemies? Good
Friends? Good
Lovers? Good
It's up to you. Nothing is forced.
🎡I believe that, if spent together a lot of time, one can give something to another. They can become something more together, complete each other, and do things, which they normally wouldn't do.
A few random examples from my stories, just to explain.
- Smith hates to go between people, but since Quentin likes to do it, he'll just go with him. It won't mean that Smith becomes a totally different person, but he kinda forces himself to actually go between people, with his friend.
- Quentin doesn't like that Smith always wears the same clothes, and the hat. But if the man wants to do it, then he accepts it and doesn't force the man to entirely change himself. When Quentin dresses in 80's neon clothes, he can actually successfully ask Smith to join him with matching clothes.
Smith sure was so egoistic and selfish in the beginning, when I started to build their relationship, but he's become a bit less stiff. He actually cares for one person. None of them are willing to change the other at all, they accept them the way they are. But both of them change a bit because of the other.
- Smith hates talking. In general. He never opens up to anyone, and he doesn't care about others. But Quentin starts talking to him. He just talks. About happiness and sadness, both. How his day was, how his childhood friend just disappeared. After years, Smith actually starts talking as well. They decide to not have any kind of secrets in front of each other, and while Smith doesn't tell everything (especially things that may hurt Quentin's feelings) he never keeps secrets.
Quentin is a terrible cook, and Smith can fully live on his own, aka he can cook for himself pretty well. But he never tells this to the other, he doesn't risk it, it may make Quentin sad and feel less, while he isn't.
💞As for the lovers part, it's kind of the same, but obviously deeper.
Smith does have brain, he realizes that Quentin's a hidden gem, he's cute and kind to everyone, and pretty naive. Quentin loved the mystery part of Smith. He likes that (except for the belly) the man is a toothpick. Smith cares about him, which is the worst thing that could've been done: give feelings for someone, who likely doesn't show/have any. So, basically, Smith realizes pretty early that Quentin's an absolute disaster. How's he still alive, good question. Quentin's walking on a road, accidentally pushing off fragile items without noticing as he passes by, and Smith is the one, who catches those items and puts them back to their place without mentioning it, or letting Quentin know in any way..
Does Quentin ACTUALLY know, how much the man helps him? Hmm.
It's kinda hard for me to put into words what I've been developing for more than a year. But it sure is an experience and I love it!
