A distressed cry shattered the idyllic peace of the garden.

"Sisters." Anguish and disbelief colored the tenor clarion of the words Farore, the Goddess of Courage, whispered into the sudden quiet. “The Shadow has killed the Hero.”

A long moment of silence followed. Even the birds and crickets ceased their chirping.

“Well, that’s not supposed to happen.” Din, the Goddess of Power, deadpanned in her deep-bell voice.

“There must be a Hero. There cannot not be a Hero,” added the tinkling windchime of Nayru, the Goddess of Wisdom.

The garden held its breath for a small eternity.

“The Shadow will have to do it.” Farore clearly couldn’t believe what had just come from her own mouth.

What!?” Din boomed.

What?!” Nayru whip-cracked.

“There must be a Hero. The Shadow has killed the Hero; therefore, the Shadow must now become the Hero.” The chimes of her voice strengthened as her resolve solidified.

“Okay…” Nayru hedged.

Din raised her eyebrows. “Who’s telling him?”

Notes:

So there’s this picture I’ve had in my screensavers forever that was the inspiration for this little adventure. I went to look for the artist to credit them and found the picture on Wallpapers.com, as well as a few other free sites, but I'm leery of copyright infringement, so I'm just posting the address where I have it saved. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/502362533444101416/

FYI, this is the... fourth WIP I have going right now. It was an accident, but now I'm stuck like this and I just wanted to post this little snippet because I'm extremely happy with the concept and this prologue and I needed to get it out there. There is no posting schedule, as I am literally three paragraphs into the first chapter and only have a vague idea where this is going. I am also a wife and mother and work a full-time job, so, you know, life gets in the way. Also, I have other hobbies in which I like to indulge, like reading and writing my other stories and playing LoZ.

So, if you're like me and don't read WIPs (irony, thy name is Sue), but like the premise, why not add a bookmark, put on your "Marked for Later" list, or subscribe? Drop a comment and let me know your thoughts on the opening, if you have a minute! :)
