Chapter 1: Tubbo

Summary:

Caring for your friend who just came back to life and got out of prison always leads to questions being raised, whether it’s about what happened or why rabbit ears are attached to your head

Chapter Text

The first person to figure out Tommy was a rabbit hybrid was Tubbo, on accident, of course. After finally coming out of the prison and being stuck with nothing but the hard obsidian floor away from everyone that was a comfort to him, Tommy went to Tubbo, just to be around someone while he slept. Tubbo had no problems with it.

Tommy had gone to sleep pretty quick, it was still light out and would be for a good while longer. Tubbo took the day off, playing with Michael and peacefully reading his book. Tubbo let Tommy rest in his bed, he had spared and didn’t mind him cuddling up in the blankets.

An occasional clicking sound was heard, and Tubbo originally thought it was just Michael, but he was down for his afternoon nap. He wasn’t moving, and neither was Tommy, but the clicking sound persisted. Tubbo did a check around the perimeter, finding nothing, and coming back inside the clicking sound continued.

He tried to push the noise aside, maybe it was just the wind.

But the wind didn’t fucking purr.

That definitely wasn’t normal, or had any explanation that Tubbo could think of. He noticed that it was louder when he sat back down, and realized that he was sat right in front of Tommy to make sure he didn’t have any nightmares.

Tubbo got closer, and sure enough the noise was coming from the sleepy boy in his bed.

So he finally knew where it was coming from, but now was the question of why? He doubted that it was a death thing, the purple and general anxiety was already enough, and it wouldn’t make sense that his vocal cords would be affected by it. He didn’t want to wake him up either, he’d had a long day.

Tubbo went to mess with the other boy's hair gently, accidentally shifting the beanie on top of Tommy’s head.

Then he saw the base of rabbit ears.

He was certain he wasn’t meant to see that, or know that Tommy was a hybrid, but the rabbit was out of the bag.

A lot of things started to click into place, and he now realized that those sounds coming from Tommy were because of his hybrid, and from what little he knew about actual rabbits, they were sounds of happiness and contentment.

Tubbo tried to not aw and smile, but his ram tail wagged happily. Tommy felt comfortable with him, truly comfortable. He draped the blanket back over him and messed with his hair again, needing his own sleep. They could talk about it in the morning.

Tubbo was the first to wake to his surprise. He knew Tommy would be hungry, so he got some apples, golden carrots, and bread. Thinking back he should have realized that he was an herbivore hybrid ages ago, the poor thing always felt sick after eating meat. The burrowing, his home, his energy, his ability to dodge and weave around sharp corners, the freeze reaction when feeling fear, all of those things were akin to rabbits, and Tubbo felt stupid for not putting some connection together.

Tommy woke up, groaning a little as he stretched.
“Good morning sleepy head, sleep good?” Tubbo asked.
Tommy nodded. “Thanks for letting me crash here, I just don’t really want to be alone, especially after coming back.”

“Don’t worry about it big man, here, I got you some food, I’d guess you’d be hungry.”

Tommy looked at the varied fruits and veggies confused at first, but then smiled. “Thank you, it means a lot to me, seriously.”

“Of course! I’m happy to help!”

They are their food in relative silence, Tommy was careful to not eat too fast or he’d be sick.

“So,” Tubbo said. “You got anything you wanna share with me?”

Tommy shrugged. “Dunno, what are you on about?”

“I thought the wind was like pushing a trap door or something, kept on hearing clicking, all the doors were locked up tight, couldn’t figure out what it was for the life of me.” Tubbo tried to give him a chance to tell him on his own terms.

“Must have been the villagers downstairs or a skeleton going about.” Tommy had already prepared for questions if it ever came up.

“There was also this like humming, purring basically as well.”

“Do you have a cat?” Tommy asked.

“No, not yet at least.”

“It was probably Michael then, or maybe a fox outside.”

Tubbo tried to beat around the bush, but nothing was working. He felt bad about just flat out telling him, but this was going nowhere. “I know, Tommy.”

“Know what?” Tommy often forgot that he was actually a hybrid, when it’s not public knowledge, not much time is spent on it.

“That you’re a hybrid. I know the noises were coming from you, and I saw the base of your ears.”
Tommy froze, not sure if he should deny it or accept it and come clean.

“Why didn’t you tell me? I could have helped, understood, not fed you meat!”

“I was scared, I’ve been hiding it for forever.”

Tubbo gave a gentle sigh, going to ruffle the other boy's hair. “Well you don’t need to anymore. I’m here for you, and everything your hybrid type has in store.”

“Thank you Tubbo, I appreciate it.”
