The Song in the Wind

Summary:

Izuku was a happy child. One that, despite his own frailty, wanted to do good in the world.

He got a wake-up call when he lost his mother, leaving both his father and himself despair ridden.

Yamada Hizashi, Izuku's father, was a very enthusiastic but kind man. He was determined to keep Izuku safe and happy, even if the younger really, REALLY wanted to be a hero in the past. The least Hizashi could do was support him.

It's quite the odd rabbit hole they find themselves in after a chance meeting of old friends and new chances.

Notes:

Before anything! I want to thank everyone who is here from the old version of this fic! It's still going to stay up, it just won't be added too. This follows generally the same plot and everything with minor tweaks to please my own brain as rereading my old work made me physically cringe XD

There will be minor edits to make the story more interesting, but it will be generally the same :)

And to anyone newly discovering this! Hello! I am fairly laid back and chill so don't feat commenting or anything. All I request is that you be kind to me and anyone else who may have read and commented on the fic :D

As usual, anything that deserves a TW will get one and any misinformation will be righted if someone informs me of it!!!!!

As a side, the major character death warning is just Inko who is dead before the placing of the fic, it's also in tags just so you know.

Chapter Text

The passing of buildings outside the window both thrilled and terrified Izuku. He was finally going back to public school, or, more he was finally going back to school. His dad had done well teaching him but being a hero, radio host, and parent was already a lot on him so it was more just Izuku studying by himself with Hizashi checking his work and helping him when he could. It was nice, always having someone to support him and fall back on through everything.

He also had Bakugo, who was probably waiting for him at the school entrance. It hadn't really been too long since they had seen one another since both Bakugo and his parents came over frequently. Bakugo always tried to outdo Izuku with what they were learning, usually failing thanks to Izuku's high analyst abilities and general intelligence. The two were a close as could be thanks to everything though, meaning Izuku had Bakugo to watch over him as well.

As the buildings changed from homes to shops and other similar businesses, Izuku looked over to his Dad. Hizashi had been listening to the radio as they drove but noticed Izuku looking at him and smiled, figuring it would be a good time to talk before they got to school. "Hey Izu, do you think you'll be alright?" Izuku smiled nervously and nodded. "Good! I was worried, and probably will be worried all day! So don't get hurt! But have fun!"

Izuku's small laugh made Hizashi smile, knowing he was at least doing something right if Izuku could laugh despite everything. "I wanted to talk about one more thing Izu, and I know you may not like it but I was wondering if you would think about us getting a service dog for you?" Izuku wasn't against it at all, but he did worry about the cost, keeping the dog healthy, training, making sure everything was set with the school as well as anywhere else he may need to go, and also-

"Izu!" Izuku jumped a little, startled out of his thoughts. "You were muttering hun, and don't worry about the cost or any of that, it's my job to worry about that stuff. You just have fun and do what you want and I'll figure everything else out. I won't force you to get one though so you think about it, okay?" The anxiety of all the things that came with owning a dog, let alone a service dog, subsided as his dad spoke.

"Hehe, sorry dad. I'll think about it, but no getting anything until it's decided!" Hizashi laughed and nodded, promising he wouldn't despite the look of disbelief on his son's face. After that, the conversation died off as the two listened to the music, the air much nicer than the previously anxious one. It was like that a lot, one thought leading to another causing general anxiety than the helpful support of one another to make it through.

It wasn't long before the car slowed to a stop and Hizashi turned to look at him fully. "I want you to be very careful Izu. No trying to do anything you aren't ready for and if anyone bugs you tell me and Bakugo so we can make sure it stops!" Izuku sweatdropped. His dad was way too happy when he said that. His head lowered as he felt his dad's hand on top of it. "Really though, don't be afraid to call me, I'll drop everything and come get you if I need to and everyone knows that."

As Izuku got out of the car he waved before turning to where he had spotted Bakugo. He was in fact waiting at the gate, glaring at anyone that got too close. "Kacchan!" Bakugo looked up, the slightest of smiles appearing as he saw the familiar green hair. It took everything in Izuku not to run over. He was very excited and scared at the same time which resulted in a lot of excess energy and jitters. Bakugo could tell though and kept a, begrudgingly kind, glare to make sure he didn't.

As the two met up Izuku was almost jumping in excitement. "Okay, okay," Bakugo put his hand on Izuku's shoulder to hold him down. "I know you're excited, but stop jumping so much, you're going to make me dizzy." Izuku laughed. They turned towards the entrance, heading in to go to the principal's office before anything else. "So, we've had a lot of transfers in the time you were gone so there's gonna be a lot of kids who don't know about you. Just a warning."

It didn't take long to get where they were going since the office was on the first floor closer to the front. Izuku mainly just needed to confirm he was there and make sure no changes to his schedule were made so it went by quickly, leading for the two boys to be on their way to their homeroom. Luckily since both boys were incredibly smart they had the same schedule, even with extracurricular activities, which was mainly just more basic life skill classes. The only time the two would be PE. Bakugo was top of the class in PE while Izuku wasn't even allowed to participate.

As the two got to their class and settled in the bell rung, the teacher walking in only seconds afterward. "Goodmorning class! I'm your homeroom teacher as you know." As the regular introductory speech from the teacher went on, Izuku fidgeted with one of his curls, trying not to be distracting, but needing to do something. "Oh! I had almost forgotten, we have a new student joining us this year, and I know many of you may not think much of this, but he has been going to the school, just on our homeschool program the last few years!"

Izuku shrunk down the more the teacher explained, thanking them silently as they neglected to mention his illness. He always felt better to be the one to explain that part, and he usually wouldn't until something caused him to be out of school for a while. As the teacher ended their mini explanation, waiting for Izuku to introduce himself, he stood up. "H-hello! I'm Izuku Yamada. It's a pleasure to meet and be in class with you all!" He bowed as he finished, earning a few giggles and whispers, most being quieted by the pops from in front of him.

When Izuku finally sat back down and class began he was relieved, the worst of it was over, the next hard part was PE. He would worry about that after however as he focused on the lesson, mainly solving everything before the teacher had finished explaining. He forgot how slow some classes could go, but in turn, he forgot how quick some others were. As their English class finally came to a close the bell rung.

Finally able to relax, Izuku slumped onto his desk as he heard the chair in front of him be pushed back. "I'm gonna go get us some drinks to go with our lunch, you just stay here." Izuku lifted a hand, indicating he heard Bakugo before he heard the almost shuffling steps of his best friend. Not much long after he heard multiple footsteps approaching and looked up to see two boys and a girl standing near his desk.

He smiled and sat up straight. "Hello!" The boys glanced at one another as the girl stepped forward. The lack of response and general air from the kids made Izuku incredibly anxious, knowing as kind as some people could be there were always kids who needed to be better. Bakugo wasn't entirely free of that view, but Izuku had seen him change over time. "W-what can I do for you?" He tried to keep the smile but the kids laughed at his anxious stutter.

The girl, putting her hands on her hips, spoke. "We wanted to come to see the new kid in school. Now if you wouldn't mind, go fetch us something to drink, it's kind of the norm here." Izuku's smile faltered, knowing this would end badly. He tried to think of some way he could avoid any problems, but given the impatient stares, it was likely it wouldn't be that easy.

Smile still intact, Izuku tilted his head some, "I'm sorry, but I'm waiting here for my friend to come back and he'd be worried if I was gone. Plus I don't know where I would get drinks from." That was a lie, but it was clear these were some of the new kids that weren't aware of him having gone here before. It was easy to play off as dumb than try to reason with people like this. The girl laughed, looking back at the two boys who smirked and stepped closer.

It wasn't long before there was a thunk as one got hit in the back of the head. Looking down, the object that hit him was none other than a can of tea. Izuku covered his mouth as the three angrily turned to the culprit only to find Bakugo creepily smiling at them, explosions erupting from his free hand. "Would you mind getting fuck out of my way?" The troublemakers quickly moved aside, glancing at Izuku with a snide look.

Izuku continued to cover his mouth as Bakugo walked forward, pausing to pick up the drink before sitting back in his seat, turning it to face Izuku. The three watched quietly, making Bakugo even more irritated. Ignoring them however, he held out the can that hadn't been thrown. "Here, I got your favorite." The three stared with wide eyes before Bakugo gained a smirk, one Izuku was very familiar with even though he hadn't been back in school for a long time.

Izuku put his head down, covering his head but still glancing past his arms. Bakugo, with his now very shaken tea, turned the can top towards the three, quickly opening it. The spray of tea showered over all three but hit the ringleader girl the most, drenching her in tea. "HEY!!!" Bakugo laughed as they all unintelligibly protested the result. Before anything more could happen a hall monitor peeked in at the ruckus and frowned seeing the group.

Lucky for Bakugo, Izuku was able to claim it had been an accident since no one could have known that would happen. The rest of their lunch was Bakugo joking about the group as Izuku took the time to rest some more. He knew he'd have time to do what he wanted in the library during PE, but it was nice to just listen to Bakugo ramble on before class started again. The next class they had was either science or music. Both meant changing rooms however so it would be interesting.

After the bell rang, Izuku was happy to find it was music class. He absolutely adored music and knew many different instruments and how to play most of them. Most of the class practiced singing, piano, or violin. Izuku was a violin, gladly up for it, and one of the best players in the class. As well as he played though, he earned twice as many stares and whispers, most just generally curious about where he learned to play that well.

Finally, Izuku was going to the library, waving goodbye to his best friend as he did. He hoped it would just be a quiet day there but a small pit in his stomach told him it was never that easy for him. Sighing and resigning to something probably gonna go wrong, he walked onward. Luckily the library was on the first floor and PE happened to be their last class so Izuku could wait in there for Bakugo before they headed home.

The library was empty other than the librarian, who happily greeted him, glad he was back in school and quietly adding that Izuku was his favorite. It was nice, but Izuku couldn't help but wonder if he was just saying it since he was always timid thanks to his illness. He brushed it off, grabbing a few books before going to a table by a window. That was one of his favorite things about the library, the windows. They opened to allow air in which meant Izuku could get a nice view of the nearby park.

The walls around the school were more for appearance than anything, being easily climbable, even for him. It did mean that some kids that skipped class from their, or other, schools would pass by, usually messing around as they did. Izuku had been witness to kids trying to skip school and getting caught eventually a lot while sitting in the library before. It was always a funny story to tell his dad when they were home.

As he read, Izuku heard muffled voices from outside. Wondering what was going on he looked at the window to find two large boys and a shorter purple-haired boy. Izuku frowned, seeing how nervous the purple-nette looked. The bigger two seemed to be making fun of him or something worse and it made Izuku's blood boil. He stood up, gaining the attention of the librarian as he opened the window and leaned as far out as he could.

"Hey! Leave him alone!" The two looked over in surprise before one reared back as a book hit him square in the face. The purple-nette looked over in surprise before he glanced down at what had been thrown to see it was a notebook. Seeing the two distracted he ducked down and grabbed the notebook before running towards the window. Izuku blinked in surprise as he tried to quickly get out of the way before the other jumped through.

Izuku wasn't so lucky as he fell down, gasping as the breath got knocked out of himself. The purple-nette shut the window as the librarian, who had seen what was happening thanks to Izuku, ran out the side exit and after the kids. As the purple-nette turned to thank Izuku, he saw the boy on the ground and, scarily, out of breath. "Oh no . . . are you okay? I didn't mean to knock you over." Izuku pushed himself up some, the other crouching down and helping him up.

Izuku, after a second of catching his breath, smiled. "I'm fine! I was gonna ask if you were okay?" The other looked surprised opening his mouth. "Oh! Sorry, I should introduce myself. I'm Izuku Yamada. I didn't mean to pry in or anything but you looked uncomfortable and I knew if they did anything they'd be in a lot of trouble since you were all wearing different uniforms. I figured nothing bad would happen if I just tried to get their atte-"

He paused as he heard laughter from the other. "Sorry, I'm Hitoshi Shinsou. Thank you for helping me," He paused, looking at the notebook in his hand, "and here's your notebook back." Izuku smiled and took it. "Seriously though, are you okay? You looked like you were dying when I turned around . . ." Izuku waved his hand, pulling his feet together as he sat on the floor, Shinsou joining him instead of crouching.

"I'm just pretty weak, I'm constantly sick, hence why I'm in here alone." Izuku was all smiling at this point, having done something he was proud of. "I just lost my breath for a second though so don't worry!" He looked at the notebook. "Thank you for this back too, it's kind of embarrassing, but this is a journal with notes on heroes." Shinsou tilted his head and Izuku opened it to his dad's page, there was one in every book honestly. "Here."

As Shinsou read the page on Izuku's dad, which was surprisingly non-personal, he looked surprised. "You made this? It's so cool. There are even suggestions on improvements and your sketch of Present Mic is so accurate!" Shinsou got more excitable as he went on before realizing. "Sorry . . ." Izuku waved his hand.

The two talked for a while, the librarian checking in to see if they were fine as well as saying Shinsou could stay if he wanted to. Both boys found it nice to talk to each other, surprisingly comfortable with one another for only having just met. "If you don't mind me asking, what's your quirk Shinsou? You don't have to tell me though!" Shinsou tensed a bit but sighed. It was odd to talk about it since most people feared him afterward.

Shinsou went on to explain his quirk, surprised when Izuku was amazed instead of afraid. He wrote down the info in his hero notebook which made Shinsou even more flustered. After they talked for a while more, Shinsou decided he should leave before the school actually got out to avoid possibly getting in trouble. "Thanks for helping me again, and . . ." Shinsou paused, deciding against admitting he was insecure over his quirk, "I hope we see each other again soon." Izuku nodded with a smile.

Shinsou left through the side exit, waving again before he hopped the wall and headed towards the park. He still had time to do what he wanted to he so picking up the newly added to notebook, he turned to a new page. He knew the librarian wouldn't mind if he listened to some news so he did, taking any notes on new heroes on the rise as well as adding to the older notes as well. As the pages turned he saw his newest friend's entry and smiled. He really hoped they met again soon.

After the bell rang it didn't take long for Bakugo to come into the library staying quiet until they were out. Once they left he was immediately telling Izuku everything that had happened during PE, including the rude kids from earlier trying to mess him up but ending up with multiple bruises from 'accidental' stray throws. Izuku listened as Bakugo continued on, glad he could just listen. As much fun as being at school was, he was deathly tired. Being knocked to the ground didn't help either.

Getting outside the two immediately saw Hizashi standing near the gate. Most kids didn't recognize him with his hair down and with regular glasses, but a few students leaned over to their friends and whispered about possibilities. Upon seeing the boys, Hizashi waved at them, waiting till they were close to speak. "Hey boys! How was school? Anything interesting?" Both laughed as he subconsciously did finger guns.

"Hey dad! It was fun, tiring, but fun." Hizashi's smile softened, glad to hear it. "I have so many things to tell you, but first can Kacchan come over to do homework?" As the three talked, eventually heading back to the Yamada house since Bakugo got permission to go from his mom, or as he calls her, 'Old Hag'.

On the way to their house, the boys talked about everything they could think of. Izuku forgot to mention the library, getting too caught up in talking about the earlier part of the day, making sure they didn't forget anything. Hizashi had given a thumbs up to Bakugo when he heard about the tea incident. When they did arrive home it was Hizashi's turn to talk about his day. Both knew he had patrol and radio work today so there was a lot to be known.

"Well, the station was pretty boring today actually, just having a small giveaway on-air and recording some lines for when I'm gone and they need in-between bits." The boys listened intently, already knowing how most of it worked but always interested in how he worked. "After that I had patrol. I actually met up with a friend I haven't seen in a few years. He was working quite a few cities away but recently moved back again."

Izuku and Bakugo looked at one another, seeing a smile they had only really seen in photos. Both knew that whoever his friend was, they were special to him. Hizashi continued to talk about what he did for the day before looking at the time and getting up to make them diner. As he left, the boys headed upstairs to Izuku's room. Once in, Izuku turned to Bakugo excitedly. "Dad found someone he likes!!! Oh my gosh!!!! I'm so excited for him!!!!"

Bakugo rolled his eyes and flopped onto the bed. "I doubt he even realizes he likes the person. Also, does he even think he's allowed to date? If you even slightly might not like it he would never date anyone." Izuku's excitement turned to worry as he began to mutter over the possibility. "Chill, you can just tell him at dinner." As the two discussed it, they brought up a game to play, distracting themselves not long after.

Eventually, they were called down for dinner and Izuku paused while eating. "Hey dad? I was thinking about something. I just wanted to let you know that if you ever find someone you like, I'm alright with you dating them. I know it's probably w-" He was interrupted by being hugged. "Uh, are you crying dad? Haha, it's okay." With Hizashi balling, and dragging Bakugo into the hug as well, Izuku breathed out in relief. He had been slightly worried that his dad would have been confused about where the topic came from over anything else.

Hizashi released the boys and put his hands on Izuku's cheeks. "Thank you Izuku. I won't lie that I had thought about it before but thought it wouldn't be kind. I was planning on asking you one day, but you brought it up first." Izuku laughed and Hizashi moved his hands away, poking his nose. "I'll remember it okay? But you also keep in mind that no matter what's happened, you do what you want to." Izuku nodded as Hizashi stood up fully. "Alright then, dessert time!!!!"

After dessert, the boys went upstairs, messaging Mitsuki and getting permission to have a sleepover since it was already pretty late. They got back on their games, talking a little over what happened before focusing on the game. Eventually, Izuku fell asleep and Bakugo moved him fully onto his bed before switching the game. Usually, he played for a while longer to make sure Izuku stayed asleep before heading to bed as well.
