Work Text:
Yuuji was bouncing on his feet as he waited for the doors to open of his new daycare. Nanami had told him that he had to be a good boy on his first day and that if he was then they’d have breakfast for dinner. The little boy’s excitement had only grown from there. New school, new apartment, and he even had new clothes.
This was going to be the best first day ever! What felt like years passed before a man with long, black hair opened the classroom door and smiled softly at them. “You must be our new student, Itadori-kun. I’m Geto-san.”
“Geto? Well, this is an unexpected coincidence.” Nanami says and the two men look at each other for a moment.
“Indeed, I didn’t know you’d become a father.” Geto-san remarks and Yuuji stares up between the two, squeezing Nanami’s hand gently.
“Legal guardian actually, for Yuuji and his older brother. I knew their father.” His guardian nods and his new teacher does too.
“I see, well at least I have your number already if your kid acts up.” The teacher snorts and then looks at him, smiling. “You ready, buddy? Only little Megumin is here yet. He’s shy though so try not to get too excited.” He squeezes Nanami’s hand, and the man kneels down and grabs his shoulder, gentle yet firm.
“You be good, alright, Yuuji. Sukuna is going to come by and get you after school and then meet me at work.” Tears start filling his eyes and his little chin wobbles.
“Nanamin, I’m going to miss you.” He says tearily, rubbing his eyes to hide his tears. Strong arms pull him into a warm hug and he snuggles into his guardian’s chest, carefully not to get tears on the man’s blue dress shirt.
“I’ll miss you too, but we’ll see each other soon. Why don’t you make me a picture for the fridge?” Nanami pulls back and gives him an encouraging nod, and he smiles back.
“Okay!” With a task set out for him, he looks to his waiting teacher. “I can make a picture, Geto-san?”
“Sure, Itadori-kun. Let’s get you settled in first.” He turns and waves goodbye to his guardian who nods back and walks away backwards until he reaches the doors of the school and has to turn to leave. His new teacher places a guiding hand on his back and he walks into the classroom.
It’s so colorful and bright. There are windows and art everywhere. A long green chalkboard is on the wall and he can read the kanji of his name, but that’s about it. Suku has been working on teaching him to read. His big brother is the best, even though he’s a little rude, but he sneaks Yuuji chocolates sometimes and makes him dinner when Nanami has to work late.
Geto-san shows him his cubby, where he is to put his little yellow backpack every day. Another black backpack hangs in the cubby next to his, with a dog and owl keychain on it. “Megumin, did you take your homework out of your backpack?” He finally notices a small black-haired boy looking at them from one of the tables.
His head shakes no and the teacher sighs, unzipping the bag and grabbing a white folder. Geto-san opens it and takes a few pieces of paper out before returning the folder to the bag.
“Do I get homework too?” He asks, wide-eyed. Suku always said homework was the gods having a laugh at the youths of the world. He didn’t know what that meant, but he thought the coloring page in his teacher’s hands looked neat.
“You will! Starting today. Now you’ll be sitting with Megumi, go find your name by him, and I’ll bring you some breakfast. You must be hungry with how early it is.” It was early! Nanamin hadn’t even waited for the sun to wake up before getting them to school! It wasn’t fair because his brother was still sleeping, but his guardian had said ‘I will only face one devil at a time. Sukuna is best left sleeping if I want to live to see tomorrow.’
Yuuji didn’t really get that either, but he liked seeing the sun slowly wake up and make all the streets bathed in warm light. It was so pretty and Nanami had agreed while he had described how pretty it was. He wondered if the other boy would think sunrise was pretty? He went and sat in his seat and looked at the other boy, expecting a greeting but got none.
“My name’s Itadori Yuuji, what’s yours?” He asked cheerily, watching green eyes look at him before the other boy sighed and played with the rice in his bowl.
“Fushiguro Megumi. I’m four.” The other boy’s voice was quiet and he grinned.
“I’m five! I have an older brother named Sukuna, but I call him Suku. Do you have an older brother? Or sister? I used to have a daddy and mommy, but now I have Nanami and he’s so cool. He gets to wear suits every day and he hates someone called overtime.” Yuuji rambles until the other boy smiles a little. “Geto-san seems nice! Do you like to draw? He said I could make a picture later for my fridge at home.”
Large green eyes stared at him. “Uh, I like to paint and write. My parents taught me how to read so I like books more.” A four-year-old could read before him? How cool! “Geto-san is really nice. He has pretty hair too.” The little boy says, blushing slightly. “Your older brother sounds nice.”
“Suku isn’t nice! He’s rowdy, that’s what Nanami says!” Itadori grins proudly at remembering the word and sees Megumi blinking at him.
“You’re a little special,” Megumi says, but Yuuji takes it as a good thing and smiles brighter.
“Megumi,” their teacher comes over and grabs the little boy’s pale ear, tweaking it gently, “that’s rude. You don’t talk like that.” His honey eyes stare at the two as green eyes look down to the table and he hears a soft sorry.
“It’s okay! My parents, Nanami, and my brother said I was special all the time! I think I’m special.” Yuuji rambled, kicking his little feet in the air under the table. Megumi smiled a little but didn’t say anything.
“Oh, great,” Geto-san said with a sigh before placing rice and a fried egg before him on a plate. “Go ahead and eat. When you’re done Megumi can show you what to do. I’ll be getting the class setup. Do you have any questions, Itadori-kun?”
“Does your hair take a long time to dry?” He asks in wonder, looking at the long black tresses with wonder. He thinks the man has the longest hair he’s ever seen. His teacher laughs and ruffles his hair affectionately.
“Not very long. My husband likes to help me dry it.” His eyes widened and he placed his hands excitedly on the table.
“You have a husband?! That’s so cool! Is he a teacher too?” The teacher smiles and squats down so they’re at eye-level with each other.
“No, he owns a very nice Mochi shop chain. He helped me buy this school, and we’re co-owners here. You’ll get to meet him on Friday.” Black eyes look at him warmly and he smiles shyly back, his teacher is really handsome, like Nanami! He wonders if husbands can have more husbands? Maybe his guardian would really like Geto-san and whoever his spouse was! “Now go ahead and eat. The rest of the class will start coming in soon.”
Yuuji ate in silence with Megumi, who picked at his food until a stern call of his name had him reluctantly eating. “You seem pretty sad.” Yuuji remarks and the other boy blinks up at him.
“My daddy had to take our puppies to the vet this morning. I wanted to go because they get scared, but he said no.” The other’s face scrunched up in unhappiness and then settled. “I miss them.”
“What did your mommy say? Whenever my daddy said no I always asked my mommy.” Yuuji says and sees the other boy wring his hands together nervously.
“I don’t have a mom. She died when I was born.” He blinks at the other boy before nodding.
“Both our moms are in a better place then. I really don’t like this better place, it keeps taking people I love, but it must be pretty nice.” Megumi smiles a little at him and he grins back. Another boy walks in with two identical looking girls following in behind him.
“Fushiguro! You’re actually talking, wow!” The twin with longer hair says and Megumi blushes, becoming quiet all over again. “I guess Geto-san was right! Pigs must be able to fly.” They all hear their teacher snort and then the little group introduces themselves.
Todo is a tanned boy with dark hair who seems to annoy everyone. He gets a huge serving of rice and an extra egg, but Mai says it’s because it keeps him from talking. Todo claps loudly as he’s served and he even winces at the volume of the sound.
While they finish up eating another boy, Yuuta, comes in. He looks tired and wears a really cool white shirt. He has a fake katana strapped to his back because today is his day for show and tell, or at least that’s what he tells Yuuji when he asks. Megumi takes his plate quietly and leads him over to the sink in the room, washing off the leftover rice and then putting their plates on the cart the rice is on.
“Geto-san, can we draw now?” Megumi asks quietly to their teacher’s back. He’s putting up some posters of what looks like different animals all along the big green chalkboard.
“Sure, but you only have twenty minutes before class starts.” The other boy’s head bobs in understanding and he leads him over to a table that has paper, pencils, markers, crayons, and funky-looking scissors. Megumi grabs white paper and the crayons for them both and then leads them to what he says is called the art center.
They draw together and Yuuji is very concentrated, even though the classroom is getting louder and louder. He wants to make a nice picture for the fridge. He draws himself, Suku, and Nanami standing next to their apartment. He puts his mommy and daddy in the sky, right by his bright yellow sun, and then he makes clouds in the sky with a blue crayon.
Suku liked art so he usually watched him draw when their parents were still alive. He hadn’t been drawing much lately, but maybe if Yuuji makes a picture his brother will too? He makes such cool drawings! Maybe if he asks really nice Sukuna will let him bring one in for show and tell.
He finishes the drawing by writing his name in the bottom corner and shows it to Megumi. “Hey! Look!” He announces and watches green eyes look at his picture.
“Your family?”
“Yup! What did you draw?” He looks at the other’s paper and sees two dogs, trees, what he thinks is probably the boy next to him, and then what he thinks might be himself. “Is that me?” A pink blush covers the other’s face, but he just smiles in return. “That’s so much better than my drawing.”
“Geto-san always says it is nice to in-incloode”
“Include, Fushiguro-kun!” They hear their teacher say.
“new people into our lives so I wanted to put you in my picture. You can have it for your fridge.” Yuuji smiles brightly as the paper is held out to him.
“Will you put your name on it?” He asks gently and watches Megumi write the kanjis for him.
“Alright, class. Clean up and come to the carpet.” Geto-san calls from the front of the class. He turns to see that there are so many more kids in the room and he swallows. His last school was a lot smaller. A little hand grabs his and he looks back to see Megumi smiling at him.
“Everyone will like you. You’re nice.” The words are so soft and he grins. Suku always said that people speak softly when they’re being kind.
“Thank you.” He says back and Megumi and he clean up their mess. He puts his and Megumi’s pictures in his backpack and goes to the carpet. He sees his name written on tape, but the spots next to him are empty. He sits like the rest of the class and gets a lot of stares. Megumi is seated across from him, but at the back of the carpet, they’re all sitting on.
Megumi gently plays with the hem of his sweater sleeve, ignoring Todo to his right and the Yuuta boy. Yuuji wishes they were sitting together, he likes the other boy. He’s really nice. His attention comes back to Geto-san when he sits in his chair at the front of the carpet.
“Okay, children. Good morning.” There’s a pause as happy chirps of ‘good mornings’ fill the room. ‘Now first, I want to introduce one of our new students, Itadori Yuuji. Come here.” He’s motioned to come closer, so he stands and goes to the teacher, turning to look at the other kids.
“Everyone make sure to include him, alright? Fushiguro-kun did a very good job this morning, and I expect the same from you all.” A chorus of ‘Yes, Geto-san’ meets his ears and he looks nervously at the other children. “Do you want to introduce yourself?” His teacher asks him quietly and he nods.
“Hi, I’m Itadori Yuuji. I’m 5 years old and have a really cool big brother. My favorite color is yellow and I like all foods.” He sees Geto-san cover his smile with the back of his hand and then clears his throat. “Anyone want to ask Itadori-kun a question?”
Todo raises his hand right away and a collective sigh passes through the other kids. “Todo, make sure it’s appropriate for school.”
“Do you like girls or boys?” The boy asks and their teacher covers his eyes with his hand before running his hand down his face.
“Todo, what have I said about that question?” Geto-san says sternly, but Yuuji just shrugs.
“If someone is pretty and nice I don’t think it matters. I like both.” Some of the girls giggle, and he gets a little smile from Megumi who he grins back at.
“Any other questions?” He gets asked about his favorite animal, tv show, sport, and even about his markings under his eyes.
“They’re stradition.” He says.
“Tradition, honey.” Geto-san says, very gently.
“Sure! My brother has them too.” He got them a year ago. They had hurt, but his mommy and daddy both had them so he had to be brave. Suku had held his hand and it hadn’t been so bad.
“Well, thank you for sharing Itadori-kun. Go ahead and take a seat again.” He goes and sits and they start their lesson. His teacher has a really pretty voice and sings tons of fun songs with them. He teaches them the letter of the week and the sign language for thank you.
“This week we will be learning about habitats. Different animals have different homes, just like you all have your own homes. Today, we’ll learn about different homes in the ocean.” Geto-san teaches them so much and Yuuji can’t stop staring at the piece of coral his teacher brought in and is showing them. He also had different types of shells that some animals might make into their homes.
It’s so cool and Geto-san sets up a ‘sensory’ station so they can touch everything during center time. When the lesson is almost over the classroom door opens and a woman appears with a small red-headed girl at her feet. She’s wearing a really cute white shirt and jean overalls outfit with black flats and a strawberry hair clip.
“Ah Mrs. Kugisaki, welcome.” His teacher says and stands up to get the girl. They all sit patiently and wait for their teacher to come back. He helps the little girl to her cubby and then to the carpet. “Class, this is our other new student Kugisaki Nobara. Go on and introduce yourself.” What Yuuji thought was a shy little girl was definitely not.
“I’m Kugisaki Nobara, call me Kugi-chan, I dare you! I’m four and a half, I want to be a model, and my clothes are all hand-picked by me. I don’t like boys, you’re all dumb and girls are prettier anyway.” She says all of this with her hands on her hips and a fire in her eyes. Their teacher sighs to himself and then smiles.
“Any questions?” Everyone sits silently, too scared of their fierce newcomer to say anything.
“Alright, well unfortunately Kugisaki-chan, you missed today’s lesson. We’re going to do centers and then get ready for outside time.” All the children cheer for outside time, save Megumi and Yuuta in the back. “First, let’s everyone introduce yourselves to Itadori and Kugisaki.”
The class goes in a circle to introduce themselves and it’s really helpful. Choso, Toge, Maki, Panda, Mai, Kamo, Todo, Megumi, Yuuta, Miwa, and Junpei make up his class. Junpei catches his eyes because he hides mostly next to Geto-san’s chair, curled up so he can’t really be seen. He hopes they can be friends.
Yuuji gets partnered up with Megumi for centers who patiently takes his hand and leads him to the sensory table. They get to play with the coral, shells, and sand. It’s so cool and Geto-san even takes pictures! He’s having so much fun, until the writing center. He’s not very good at staying in the lines and he has to erase a lot, but Megumi grabs his hand and shows him that the black-haired boy’s writing isn’t perfect either and it makes him feel better.
“It’s just for practice for school next year.” That quiet voice says and he nods, happy that he wasn’t making mistakes but learning. They work together quietly and get to the Science center next. They have paper towel rolls and paper and glue to try and make a habitat for an animal together. Megumi does most of the planning and Itadori is put on gluing duty. He’s very proud of his glue squiggles.
Geto-san takes another picture of them and asks them about their habitat. “We’re making a house for a bear,” Itadori says proudly. They’d made a triangular shape with paper flaps on three ends and one entrance.
“Ah, so you made a cave?” Their teacher asks and both boys nod. “Very good. Go put that in the Science window so everyone can see, alright?” Megumi’s eyes seem to brighten and he nods excitedly. Yuuji follows Megumi to the science window and the other boy puts their construction carefully next to a weird bridge made of cotton buds.
They go clean up and then are told to move to the next center. They get to the reading nook which has pillows, stuffed animals, and blankets. There’s a hanging tent that Megumi opens the flaps of and inside is a big cat paw pillow. “This is my favorite spot, but we can share?”
He nods excitedly and follows Megumi into the little teepee and looks at the book the boy had grabbed. “It’s Where the Wild Things Are, my daddy reads this to me and does allllll the voice. There’s a movie too, and he sings the songs for me from it.” Yuuji’s never seen the book before, but Megumi reads it patiently to him. Some of the words he doesn’t know, but he tries his best.
They’re only partway through when their teacher calls for everyone to start cleaning up. “I want to finish.” He complains, pouting.
“There’s reading in the afternoon too. We can finish after we wake up.” It sounds like a promise and he nods, crawling out from their little hideaway and joining their class on the carpet.
When everyone is sitting and ready, Geto-san sings the Itsy Bitsy Spider with them and then asks them all to get lined up to go outside. It’s been really warm lately so they all get to go out without jackets. The playground is so big and there is a pirate ship with slides coming down from the sides and monkey bars and swings.
“Wow!” Kugisaki says next to him and he nods rapidly.
“How cool!” He shouts and their teacher grins before telling them to go play. Todo and Yuuta come over to him, asking him to play, but he looks for Megumi. The other boy is with Kugisaki, Maki, and Toge so he nods.
“What are we playing?” He asks and the other two boys smile.
“Pirates! And the treasure is my katana!” Yuuta says proudly, holding his play sword up high for them to see. “I am a sea captain and you two are nasty pirates. If you can get this from me and I can’t get it back then you win.”
“Oh, cool!” He says and Todo claps in excitement. “But how do we get it from you if it’s strapped to you?”
“Figure it out!” Yuuta shouts before running off and Todo follows after him and then Yuuji does too. He gets tired of chasing the other boy though, he is so fast. He stops to see their teacher waving him over.
“Itadori-kun,” The man bends down and covers his mouth, obviously about to tell Yuuji a huge secret, “if you ask Toge to help then Yuuta will lose his katana.” His eyes widen and he bows to his very wise teacher. He finds the other boy with Megumi and Junpei this time. He’s moving his hands and the other two boys keep their eyes on his movements.
He approaches shyly and watches three sets of eyes fall on him. “Um, hi.” He says, blushing a little and interrupting the three.
“Hi, I-Itadori-kun.” Junpei says, and waves at him. “I’m Junpei Yoshino.”
“Hi, Junpei. Um, Toge,” He looks at the boy but sees him staring already, “Geto-san said you could help me get Yuuta’s katana.” Violet eyes soften on him and the boy nods.
“Itadori,” Megumi says quietly and stands, wringing his hands together, “Toge is mute, so he can’t speak. I just wanted to let you know that.” Itadori’s eyes widen and he looks at the blonde boy.
“Oh, I hope to learn how to sign for you! My grandpa is almost blind so he has to wear really special glasses, but he is trying to learn braille just in case.” Toge smiles at him and then points to Yuuta and then motions at Megumi.
“He says wait here.” Yuuji stays put and they all watch the blonde boy approach the black-haired boy, motioning with his hands at the katana on the other’s back. Yuuta blushes brightly and hands the toy over before walking back over to them. It’s only when Toge hands the toy to him that Yuuta seems to notice what has happened.
“Run, Itadori-kun!” Junpei says with a small grin and he nods, running up onto the ship and then up to what his brother had called the crow’s nest. Todo catches on and guards the stairs, and Yuuta admits defeat.
“You cheated.” The black-haired boy says, arms crossed and Yuuji frowns. He didn’t think he cheated, Geto-san had even told him what to do, but he also doesn’t want the other boy to not like him.
“That’s unfair Yuuta. He just outsmarted you.” Their teacher says, Panda resting his head on the teacher’s shoulder and looking tired. “You told him to figure it out, so he did.” Yuuta pouts still and won’t look at Yuuji as they all lineup. Kugisaki looks at him and then the other boy and sticks her tongue out at the other kid.
“First day kids have to stick together!” She says with a foot stomp and it makes him smile a little.
“Alright, everyone, inside we go. Wash your hands and then lunch.” Lunch is really nice. It’s fish with rice and egg. A very tired-looking lady brings the cart in and serves them all. Yuuji makes sure to say thank you and she gives him a little extra rice.
He sits with Kugisaki and Megumi for lunch and he wonders if the other boy had been sitting alone the whole time. Geto-san puts some music on and tells them all that if he can’t hear the music then they are too loud and then sits at a desk, eating his own lunch.
“So, why are you starting at a new school? Did you get kicked out?” Kugisaki asks, snottily, trying to look down at him.
“My parents died so I had to move in with Nanami.” He says with a shrug, already used to questions about why his brother and he looked so different from their guardian, who most assumed was his dad. Kugisaki seems to blush in shame and Fushiguro is glaring at her.
“People won’t be friends with you if you act like that. No one is better than anyone else in our class, that’s what Geto-san always says.” Megumi says very sternly for a four-year-old.
“I’m sorry,” Kugisaki says, picking at her food and looking down at the table.
“Hey, it’s okay. Why did you start today?” He asks with a big grin and the little girl looks at him with surprise first before grinning brightly back at him.
“My last school closed because of the Coronavirus.” She says it like it isn’t a sad thing, but they both blink at her. “My mommy said that too many people were working from home so they closed forever. I didn’t like my teacher, she was so borinnnnggggg.”
“Well, Geto-san seems super fun so we’ll be happy here.” Yuuji remarks and Megumi nods to them both, eating most of his meal silently. Yuuji and Nobara ramble off information to each other and make Megumi answer questions when they can. He’s so excited to make friends!
Their teacher does warn them that they only have five minutes left to eat and they both look down to their full plates with large eyes. “You better get started.” Megumi says flatly, but his eyes are warm on them as he leaves the table and washes his own plate. Geto-san stands and the two start putting mats out together for nap time.
Yuuji wishes he could help, but he is far too busy stuffing his face. So is Nobara.
“Hey! Besto Friendo!” Todo calls from his table, waving his chopsticks at him. “Slow down! Geto-san always gives us extra time! 5 minutes is 10 minutes.” He sees some of their classmates nod and slows down, eating more carefully. The two do finish, well after everyone else and wash their dishes.
Geto-san shows them to their mats which are on either side of Megumi. “He doesn’t sleep long so if you need a buddy for anything Fushiguro-kun can help you.” It does make Yuuji feel better. He doesn’t really like to be alone when he sleeps, usually, Suku shares a bed with him or Nanami.
“Geto-san, why do you call Megumi-chan Fushiguro-kun?” He asks quietly and he hears Mai snort.
“That’s because Geto-san is Fushiguro’s dad. One of them.” Mai says and Megumi seems to glare at her.
“Really?” He looks at their teacher, who nods a little. “That’s so cool! You have the same pretty hair too!” Geto-san smiles at him widely and Megumi blushes.
“Geto-san isn’t my bio-li-og-ical dad.” He says softly, but the teacher hugs him and smiles at Yuuji.
“Biological, you mean. His Daddy and I are like your Nanami, but we adopted Megumin officially a few months ago.” The little black-haired boy looks embarrassed when Geto-san squeezes him tightly, but most of the class is already down for a nap anyways which is probably why the boy hugs back.
“So your daddy is coming on Friday? Is he as pretty as Geto-san?” He asks excitedly and hears the teacher chuckle.
“Even prettier, but our Megumin is the prettiest.” The man says with a fond smile and another squeeze to the boy in his arms. Yuuji is so excited because if Geto-san is this pretty then his husband must look like the sun because Geto-san was definitely pretty like the moon! His mommy always said the sun is only pretty to look at when the moon is in the sky though, so he had to only look at Megumi’s daddy when their teacher was around!
Mind made up and seeing he was not being given attention anymore, he heads to his cubby. He’s a little anxious about naptime, especially when the lights turn off and his teacher starts closing the blinds. He doesn’t like the dark. His parents went out at night and it was so dark they couldn’t see the road and Suku said they flew off a hill to the better place. It scares him though. He grabs his blanket from his bag and his little stuffed bear, it has boxing gloves to fight off the dark and any monsters. Dr. Yaga, his therapist, gave it to him.
He settles onto his bed and turns to look at Megumi who stares up at the ceiling. Geto-san is sitting between Junpei and Panda, patting the boys’ backs gently. Yuuji pulls his blanket up and holds his bear close.
He’s not scared. He’s not scared. He closes his eyes tightly and tries not to think of the scary dark room. “Itadori?” He hears his name said softly and opens his eyes to see Megumi’s hand stretched out to him, he can already see that Nobara has scooted her mat right next to the black-haired boy’s and is holding his other hand so he’s not ashamed of doing the same.
“I know big kids shouldn’t be scared of the dark.” He whispers, even as he holds Megumi’s pale hand in his own.
“The dark is scary. I sleep with my puppies in my bed so they can keep me safe. Geto-san and my daddy got them for me because the dark scares me too.” Megumi says quietly and they all hear a very quiet ‘shh’ from their teacher.
“Really? You too? But you’re so cool, Fushiguro-kun.” Nobara says with wide eyes and Megumi nods.
“We’ll keep each other safe. Geto-san too.” Megumi says with a squeeze to their hands and Yuuji feels a lot better. He doesn’t even realize he falls asleep until warm sunlight wakes him up. He is fully drooling on his bear and has somehow ended up sideways on his bed with his legs thrown over Megumi’s.
“Hi.” He says shyly to the boy who is sitting up and reading a book. Nobara is already awake and putting her blanket and mat away. Megumi pushes him gently and they both get up and put their things away. They get to have snack after, which is fresh mandarin and rice wafers with juice. All the food is super yummy, and he can’t wait to tell Suku about it.
His new classmates start leaving one by one throughout the afternoon, well except the twins who leave together. He says bye to them all and works with Junpei at centers in the afternoon. Megumi is with Nobara until she leaves for the day, saying a very shy bye to him. It’s almost dark and it’s just him, Geto-san, and Megumi.
“Itadori-kun, do you know when your brother gets out of school?” Geto-san asks, looking at his watch and then down to him. As if whisked up by the mere mention of himself, his brother appears at the door. “Ah, well that’s a pretty clear family resemblance.” His teacher says with a grin.
Sukuna has pink hair like him, under eyes tattoos but also forehead and chin tattoos, and a very similar face to him. It’s almost impossible not to recognize that they’re related and brothers. Some people even asked if Suku was his dad which is weird because his brother is only 14. Gross, Suku doesn’t even like girls. Well, at least, that’s what he told Yuuji.
Sukuna nods at the teacher and then looks at him with warm, red eyes. “You ready to go? Nanami said we’re having French Toast if you were good.”
“He was very good,” Geto says to his brother and Suku nods.
“Get your stuff.” He goes about getting his bag and makes sure his bear is tucked in safely before going back to his brother. “Suku, can I introduce my friend before we go?” His brother is clearly holding back a sigh, but he nods. Yuuji grins and looks at Megumi who is helping clean up the classroom.
“Megumi-chan!” He shouts and green eyes look up at him and then his brother. “This is Sukuna! Come meet him, please?” He asks, with huge puppy dog eyes. He hears his brother scoff, but the other boy still comes over.
“Hi,” Megumi says shyly and his brother actually smiles a little.
“Hi, Megumi-chan, is it?” Black hair bounces in affirmation.
“Your tattoos are pretty.” The other boy says with a little blush and Yuuji giggles because it’s cute and he always thought Suku’s tattoos were pretty too.
“Thank you. Was my brother nice to you?” Megumi nods gently and smiles at Yuuji.
“I hope we’re friends forever.” The black-haired boy says with a bigger smile than he’s seen all day and Yuuji beams back.
“We will be! Can he come over for a sleepover?” He asks his brother, who sighs.
“Well, we’d have to ask his parents and Nanami first,” Sukuna says very firmly.
“Otou-san, can I go to Itadori’s this weekend?” Green eyes look at Geto-san pleadingly, and Yuuji is almost jealous of how much better Megumi is at the puppy dog eyes than him.
“I’ll talk to Nanami in the morning and we’ll see, okay? Maybe Itadori-kun can come to ours since then his brother could have time to himself?” Yuuji thinks that is a great idea! Plus, he’d get to see Megumi’s puppies.
“You’re winning the best teacher of the year award.” Sukuna laughs and his teacher nods at the teen. “Come on, Yuuji, we have to go meet Nanami. Say bye.” He rushes over to Megumi and gives him a huge hug, even lifting him up a little. He even gives Geto-san a hug, who pats his head gently.
He waves a final goodbye before taking Suku’s hand and walking to Nanami’s office. He hopes he gets to meet Overtime, he’s going to kick them! He thinks that’ll make his guardian, and probably his brother, laugh. Yuuji tells his older brother everything, but mostly how excited he is for Friday because he gets to meet Megumi’s other daddy!
“You would make friends with the kid with two dads.” Suku scoffs, but he’s doing that thing where he’s trying to not smile so he looks cool. They get to Nanami’s, but he’s already outside so they can’t meet Overtime. Yuuji had told his brother his plan and his brother choked on laughter, but promised to help him ‘rough up’ their guardian’s nemesis.
Nanami asks Yuuji about his day and he tells him everything and then they listen to Sukuna share how his day went. He’s taking all of his classes through Zoom so he doesn’t have to worry about changing schools like Yuuji, not at least until next year.
Suku tells Nanami about him wanting to set up a sleepover and the blonde man hums a ‘We’ll see’ before telling them to wash up while he makes dinner. Yuuji has homework to do so he makes a picture of his favorite animal and writes his name five times, just like Geto-san told him too.
Nanami makes the best French Toast ever with cinnamon, ice cream, and strawberries! It’s Suku’s and his favorite meal and they make sure to thank their guardian a lot for the meal, and his brother even more so because he does the dishes! Sukuna never does chores!
“Nanamin!” He shouts in excitement. “I made a picture for the fridge like you asked!” He rushes to his backpack and gets the picture, showing it to the man. Nanami squints very closely, turning it this way and that. then taps his own chin.
“Sukuna?” He calls and his brother’s head pops out from around the corner, an eyebrow raised. Nanami shows his brother the art piece and his brother looks at it with appraising eyes.
“Another true work of art, Yuuji.” Suku says and he blushes happily.
“I’ll laminate it and then put it up. This is going to be worth some serious money someday.” Nanami says with a smile and Yuuji giggles happily.
“Megumi-chan made me a picture too! Can you lamb-inate it?” His guardian nods and does so in his office before coming back out and putting the pictures side by side on the fridge, right under the picture of his mommy, daddy, Suku, and him. It’s perfect.
Yuuji had an amazing day. He’s so tuckered out though from his exciting day that he falls asleep while watching Gundam with his brother.
The rest of his week goes great. He becomes best friends with Kugisaki and Megumi-chan. Nanami has decided he gets to go to Megumi’s Friday for a sleepover. Geto-san said they’re happy to see Megumi making friends so he’s welcome whenever. Sukuna asked if he could start going to baseball again on Tuesdays and Thursdays and his teacher had nodded.
So starting next week he gets to spend every Tuesday and Thursday at Megumi’s house and sleepover. Nanami had been very grateful, but apparently, Geto-san and his husband were best friends in school with his Nanamin. He’s so excited to sleepover that Friday comes super quick.
Friday is show-and-tell day for everyone. They get to show off their special item after afternoon snack and he’s so excited. Everyone goes around on the carpet starting with Kugisaki, who surprisingly brought a toy hammer and nails set. Her daddy made it for her, and she doesn’t let anyone touch it.
Yuuji’s next and he shares Suku’s picture with his class. It’s a drawing of one of the shrines he visited for a class trip. It’s so amazing and Nanami had laminated it before he came to school to protect it. Geto-san even says how impressive the drawing is and asks if Sukuna is selling. He doesn’t know what that means, but his teacher just laughs and tells him to not worry.
Everyone shows something. Choso shows a picture of his baby fraternal twin brothers. Panda shows his favorite book that’s about pandas, Toge brought his Type and Speak device he just got, Yuuta has his katana again, Maki brought special red and blue glasses she won from a cereal box. Everyone gets a turn except Megumi who says his show and tell is on its way.
Geto laughs and lets the others on the carpet go. After Junpei's turn, there is a loud knock at their classroom door and their teacher sighs. “Everyone, behave. Fushiguro-kun’s show and tell is a lot, but be on your best behavior.” The pretty man goes to the door and slides it open, having a very brief and quiet conversation before letting someone in.
“Megumi-chan! Daddy’s here!” A very tall, very pretty white-haired man says. This has to be Megumi’s daddy! He is like the sun from how bright he smiles. He’s wearing funky sunglasses, a bright blue shirt, and black pants. Megumi looks slightly embarrassed but doesn’t stop his daddy from crushing him in a hug.
“Well, Megumin, tell us about your show and tell,” Geto-san says and Megumi grumbles a little, extracting his tiny body from the bear hug he’s in. He stands straight and then looks very sternly at his daddy, who laughs while also standing straight. They can all see their teacher hiding his laughter behind his phone, obviously recording his son and husband.
“This is my daddy,” Megumi says, chest-puffing a little bit, and he points a finger at the white-haired man. “I love him.” Yuuji smiles because his friend says the words very seriously and like it’s not even a thought for him to not love his daddy.
“My Otou-san says he’s crazy though, but I still think he’s okay. He brings home mochi when I’m good and buys my Otou-san nice things that make him smile. He also likes skirts.” Megumi nods very officially when he’s done and his dad looks like he’s going to cry and even wipes at his eyes, behind his sunglasses. Even Geto-san looks a little misty.
“Please don’t ask him questions. He’s an idiot.” Megumi then adds like he forgot it, and their teacher cackles.
“Megumi-chan!” The white-haired man whines, kneeling down and hugging his son again. “That was so mean.”
“Otou-san said I had to say that,” Megumi says and their friends are all staring at their classmate’s two parents. The white-haired parent gasps dramatically, putting his hand to his forehead, and loosens his hold on Yuuji’s best friend, falling back to the floor.
“My own husband, using my child against me.” The words sound so dramatic that the whole class starts giggling and laughing. Megumi grabs his dad’s hand and pulls him up.
“Fine, they can ask you four questions.” The little boy puts up four fingers and his daddy nods in understanding.
“Yes, Megumi-chan, very wise.” Megumi’s daddy says very seriously and looks at the class. “Questions?”
“Is that your real hair color?” Panda asks, eyes large in wonder.
“Oh, yes.” The man takes his sunglasses off and reveals his white eyelashes and amazing blue eyes, all the kids stare in awe at the sight. Some of them even say wow.
“How did Geto-san and you have Fushiguro-kun? You’re both boys.” Todo asks eyes narrowed in confusion.
“Megumi-chan is our adopted child. His other dad couldn’t take care of him very well, so now he’s mine and Geto-san’s. We love him very much too, which is why he got to be ours.” Megumi looks a little pink in the cheeks and moves to hold his daddy’s hand, smiling a little at the floor.
“Does Geto-san give you homework too?” Yuuta asks and the class all nods.
“If anything he gives me too much homework! I cook, I clean, and I pay the bills. How unfair of him, right? You should all start a mini-revolution and protest the unfairness of homework.” They hear their teacher sigh again behind them, but he has his phone up so they can’t really see his expression.
“Gojo.” Their teacher says and Megumi’s dad smiles.
“Come on, babe, what’s a little anarchy here and there?” The man says with a grin and a wink to them.
“No invitation to graduation is what it means, now be good.” Gojo pouts, but Megumi whispers something in his daddy’s ear and the man is all smiles again. They’re interrupted briefly by Maki and Mai’s mom and Toge’s dad coming in and picking up their children. They all say hi to Gojo and Geto who wave back.
“Last question.” The man says very seriously.
“Does Fushiguro-kun laugh at home? He’s very quiet at school.” Blue eyes widen a little at Junpei’s question and the man looks almost scary.
“Oh, Megumin,” The man let go of his son’s hand to wiggle his fingers in the air, “daddy tickle time.” It’s so sudden that Yuuji laughs too when the man tickles Megumi’s neck and belly and gets the boy to giggle loudly. All of them giggle and laugh too. Gojo tickles his son mercilessly until Megumi’s got a huge smile and little tears in his eyes.
The man stops and hugs his son, smiling at them all brightly. “He knows how to laugh just fine, it seems. Now we’re off for a sleepover party! Isn’t that right, Yuuji-kun?” He’s so excited to be addressed by the man and he nods excitedly. “Fantastic. Well, it’s been real, kids. Remember Viva la Revolution!” The man stands and lifts Megumi up with him who is shyly hiding his face, probably embarrassed but he’s also got his arms around his daddy’s neck so he must be happy too.
“Alright, see you at home. Go get your things Itadori-kun.” He rushes over to his cubby and grabs his bag, blanket, and his bear. He makes sure he has his homework folder too. Gojo comes over and grabs Megumi’s backpack, putting it on his shoulder before turning to him.
“Would you like to ride the Gojo Satoru express?” The man squats down and opens his unoccupied arm to him. He nods and is lifted up too and then he’s carried along with Megumi, who is smiling softly at him, to a nice looking black car.
The man straps them both into car seats and they both kick their feet while they watch little tv screens with an animal show on it. “Ugh, Suguru and his national geographic. Sorry, baby, I’ll change it.”
“It’s fine, daddy. I like this one.” Megumi says and a very bright smile is directed at them both.
“Okay, are we ready for the best sleepover party ever?!” The man says with pure excitement and they both nod. Yuuji’s never been more ready for anything in his life.
A large hand grabs a photo of his, now, husband and himself from long ago, when they were just boys. It’s part of their memories table and he can’t help smiling at it. He can’t believe how tiny they were, but he already had known he was going to be with that person forever.
“Hey,” A cool voice says from behind him and he turns to see the prettiest person to ever walk the face of the Earth, “my favorite picture. I’m so glad my dad found the original. I hate how blurry the one on my phone camera is.” Megumi takes the picture from him and smiles down fondly at it. “You have never stopped sleeping on top of me since we were four.”
“You were four. I was five, remember?” Green eyes roll, but Megumi is smiling. He’s dressed in an amazingly nice dark blue tux which looks great against his own light blue. “You were the sweetest to me. Thank you for being a part of my life forever.”
Megumi’s eyes mist gently and he puts the picture down and hugs him gently. They need to meet everyone at the doors soon, their dads are all waiting to give embarrassing speeches and Sukuna is going to be painting them during their first dance soon, but this moment is his favorite so far.
“Thank you for being a part of mine,” And then because it’s Megumi and because he loves to make Yuuji laugh he deadpans “besto friendo.” Yuuji cackles and holds his husband close, laughing into his shoulder. A warm hand grabs his while he laughs and it’s the same hand that held his the first day they met when he was scared of the dark, that had invited him into Megumi’s life, and now that wore the ring Yuuji put on it.
“Come on, chuckles, let’s go see our wedding guests. You know Nobara is going to be pissed we don’t have the picture of all three of us as kids out here too.” Megumi sighs, but it’s light and happy still. His eyes are looking at the picture, warmly.
In an old wooden frame is their favorite picture. It’s of a tiny Megumi and Yuuji during their first sleepover. They’re on Megumi’s childhood bed, holding hands. A white and black puppy in the bed and Yuuji’s old bear plush sitting at the end of it to protect them from the dark. A crack of light is all that illuminates them, but he can see that they both look content together, even though Yuuji does have his leg thrown over the other boy.
“Somethings will never change,” Megumi says, gently.
“They were never meant to.” He replies and Megumi looks at him before smiling slowly until he’s beaming at him. The hand holding his is warm and Yuuji knows that he’s never letting go of it. They were the sun and the moon, after all, they could only ever be their best selves together.
