Work Text:

Listen, child—if you’re at a party with a hundred people and one of them is the devil, he’ll be the last one you’d suspect. ― Dean Koontz

Stephanie had always considered herself to be someone who had a good read on people, and since she could see past all the glamors and disguises that were so commonplace among magicians she felt confident that she could tell who the demon in the room was. She had just started at the Academy so she was at the welcoming bash with her sorority sisters. She had pledged to the Sanguine Scales and they were meeting people from the rest of the houses. All of the freshmen had been warned that there were a couple demons in the other houses, and that they would probably meet one of them tonight. Steph had also heard rumors that there was an angel in their associated fraternity the Azure Serpents.

So with this knowledge she went into the bash with full confidence that she would be able to pick out who the demons were and who the angel was. She didn’t expect to be so very very wrong. How hard would it be to pick a demon out of a crowd?  It’s not common for people to have natural true sight, and it’s something that you don’t typically learn until second year of university, so by all rights it should have been easy to pick out the demons and the angel.

“What’s a pretty thing like you doing in a place like this?” The demon smiled at the gorgeous angel who he had spotted leaning against the wall by the snack table.

“Drake, I’d say its a pleasure to see you, but we both know that’s a lie.” Jason scowled out at the crowd, he wasn’t pleased to be here at all and his ex standing there looking like that wasn’t making it any more fun.

“Aww, Jay, since when are we back on titles?” Tim weaved himself to be in front of Jason smiling at him in the suave way he had perfected in the years that they had been together. “I thought maybe we could start over.”

“Gee, I don’t know Tim, ” he spat out the name, “why would I refuse to use your chosen name? What reasons might I have to still be upset at you?”

Tim pouted and tried to get Jason to look at him. “Jay, please. It was one time. I didn’t mean to, it just-”

That got Jason’s attention. “Happened? Just happened? That’s what you’re going with?” Jason started to crowd Tim into the corner. “I loved you, more than anything. And you what? Decided I wasn’t enough? That I was too good? What? What did I do wrong? Why did you stop loving me? ” he whispered out the last question, sending a broken sound chiming in Tim’s head.

Tim gasped up at him and frowned. “Jay, no. I didn’t- that’s not- I-”

Jason leaned in and whispered in his ear, “if you didn’t, then why does it hurt to look at you?”

Tim grabbed his shirt to hold the angel close. “Jay please , I’m sorry. It was a moment of weakness.”

Jason scoffed and moved his nose along Tim’s jaw. “I thought demons were supposed to cause weakness in others, not fall prey to it themselves.”

“Jay please.” Tim sighed out against Jason's neck, placing a kiss just beneath his ear.

“Tell me I mean more to you than him.” Jason was pressing kisses to Tim’s pulse point, playing dirty.

“He meant nothing to me, Jay.”

Jason nipped at his ear, making Tim whimper with want. “That wasn’t what I asked.”

“Um excuse me?” A blonde girl tapped on his shoulder. “I think maybe you should let him go.”

Jason gave her a look as she looked between them. She glanced where Tim had his hands splayed on his chest, the way that Jason had him in the corner. He tried to hold back the laugh in his voice. “I think you’re misunderstanding kid.”

That was apparently the wrong thing to say, as the blonde suddenly sent a physic wave at the two of them, unfortunately it was a celestial wave. Jason immediately covered Tim’s body from view with his own, it wouldn’t do for him to reveal his true form in the middle of a school function.

“Oi! Stop that!” Jason was glaring at the girl, but she just ampeed up the power. So he tapped her on the forehead and she was so surprised she stopped. “You’re gonna make him drop his form and no one wants that, trust me.”

“What?”

Tim started laughing. “Jay, Jay , she thought I was an angel!”

Jason rolled his eyes at his idiot not-boyfriend. “Yeah I got that part baby bird.”

Blondie stepped a little closer. “But… but your energy readings are off the charts, both of yours… and well you look like…” She vaguely gestured to the two of them.

Tim started laughing all over again, he was now crying and falling to the ground.

“Sweetheart, you should read a textbook sometime. Angels don’t look like saints, and demons don’t look like serpents.” Jason held out a hand that blondie shook. “But, it’s nice to meet you. I’m Jason, I’m a Power, and I would appreciate it if you didn’t try to attack my not-boyfriend.”

“Boyfriend?” Tim perked up at the word. “You’re taking me back?”

“I do believe I said not -boyfriend.”

“I chose not to hear that other part.” He stood up and brushed off his jacket as though he could have gotten a speck of anything on it and also held out a hand. “Name’s Tim, I’m a succubus.”

Blondie did not reach for his hand. “It’s nice to meet you both, I’m Ste- Spoiler.”

Tim nudged Jason’s side with his elbow. “Look, it’s her.” he turned back to the girl. “Is it her? I’d hate to presume.” She nodded at him and Tim turned back to him. “It’s her first party and she’s already making sure not to give out her name!”

“She’s also standing right here.”

Jason snorted and turned away from Tim. “Sorry about him, can’t take him anywhere really.” earning a small hey from Tim he looked around. “Well, as much fun as this has been blondie, I want to ravish my idiot not boyfriend, and remind him why hell hath no fury is quite literal when you cheat on your partner.”

Oh shit. ” Tim whispered from where he was now leaning against the wall.

“So! Have a great night. I do suggest you don’t forget, demons are going to look like everything you ever wished for, and Angels can look like anyone they wish to.”
