Used text: Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett

Work Text:

You see, you feel worse when I'm with you. I feel better alone too.

Do you want me to go away?

Look at me.

(Vexed.)

I see what it is, you are not from these parts, you don't know what our twilights can do. Shall I tell you?

Time has stopped.

(Pause.)

We're used to it.

(Pause.)

It is pale and luminous like any sky at this hour of the day.

Pale for weariness.

That's how it is on this bitch of an earth.

Come on. It's cold.

(They listen, huddled together.)

(Huddled together, shoulders hunched, cringing away from the menace, they wait.)

Come on, get up, you'll catch a chill.

Don't worry about me.

(Long silence.)

(Barefoot, head bowed.)

(They do not move.)

Where were you? I thought you were gone for ever.

Don't touch me!

Do you want me to go away?

Don't touch me! Don't question me! Don't speak to me! Stay with me!

Did I ever leave you?

You let me go.

Then why do you always come crawling back?

I missed you . . . and at the same time I was happy. Isn't that a strange thing?

You don't know if you're unhappy or not?

(Silence.)

You'd make me laugh if it wasn't prohibited.

(Long silence.)

Where are all these corpses from?

They crucified quick.

Do you not remember?

(Long silence.)

(Vexed.)

Pity we haven't got a bit of rope.
