Work Text:

“Boo!”

Sayaka nearly dropped the plastic cauldron that was full of various sweets and candies as she jumped from the sudden hands that grabbed her shoulders. She somehow managed to regain her balance and clutched tight at the container in fear. She whipped around to catch the culprit, ready to scold them, before her words caught in her throat.

When she turned around, Kirari was the one that was behind her. She was already dolled up in her costume and ready for the Council’s Halloween get-together. She was dressed as a rather stereotypical vampire. Her shirt was flowing, covered in frills and tucked inside black dress pants. A rather extravagant and expensive looking cape that appeared to be made of silk was draped over her shoulders. Said cape was held in place by a silver chain across her collarbone and a simple brooch that she was sure had a real gemstone embedded inside it was shimmering on the left side of the chain. Her playful smirk flashed a couple of fake fangs that were pressed over her real teeth. Surprisingly, the outfit kind of fit her.

Sayaka caught herself staring, hurriedly looking away with a light pink flushing her cheeks, then pouted. “P-Please, don’t scare me like that, President! At least not when I’m trying to set things up.”

“Come now, Sayaka. It’s Halloween. It’s a time for scaring each other, is it not?” Her chuckle was low and musical while she covered her mouth with a closed fist. A relaxed sigh replaced the laughter as she tilted her head in her direction. “Though it could also be a time for costumes and make believe. Speaking of, your outfit oddly suits you. But I certainly wouldn’t call you a witch any other day.”

She rubbed the back of her neck after she placed the cauldron onto the long table next to the other cavity inducing confections. Sayaka didn’t think her costume was anything special, really. A rather plain black dress adorned her frame and gloves of the same color covered her hands. Atop her head was a wide brimmed witch hat, the point bent backwards until it curled up slightly. “I don’t know about that. It was just something quick I could put together. I wasn’t going to go to this until you asked me to come.”

“Because you need to relax and enjoy yourself sometimes. You shouldn’t always be so serious. That’s not exactly good for one’s health.”

“At least one of us has to be rational and serious.”

Kirari suddenly stepped up to her and the smirk that flashed those fake teeth returned. Even though she was only a bit taller than her, she still hunched over her just a bit to give off a slight, menacing aura. She brought up one of her hands and cupped Sayaka’s chin in her palm. “Don’t make me drink your blood now. It would be hard to deny me after you’re under my trance.”

Both her touch and the tone of her voice made her lock up on the spot. The dangerous insinuation behind her words made her take a dry swallow that forced her throat to press against her fingers. Sayaka knew it was an empty threat. Though with Kirari, it may actually have been a real one; you could never tell. She could hear her heartbeat pounding inside her ears and drowning out most sound as she leaned in closer. Sweat started to cling to her forehead and bead at the back of her neck. Her body felt wound up like a spring until the lights that filled the room suddenly flickered, dimmed, then cut completely.

“How strange.” Kirari mused into the darkness, leaning back but still holding Sayaka’s chin within her fingers. “It’s certainly not storming at the moment, so I wonder why the power has gone out.”

“C… Can I have my head back please, President, so I may look into this?” Sayaka’s face was flushed from before, yet she was clearly determined to get to the bottom of the strange occurrence. Kirari let out a single laugh in the back of her throat before she gave her jaw a light squeeze between her fingers. She let the tips of them brush teasingly under her chin as she pulled her hand back.

Her blush deepened a few shades and her shoulders shivered from the touch. She shook her head to clear the invasive feelings. ‘Now is not the time to dwell on flirting! I need to find out what happened.’

Finally pulling her thoughts together, she fumbled around in the dark in an attempt to find her bag. She stretched her arms out in front of her until she felt the back of one of the chairs that was pushed underneath the table. One by one, she searched each chair until she found the one her satchel was placed on. She flipped open the front of it then slid her hand inside to rummage around its contents. It didn’t take her long to find her phone inside.

Sayaka unlocked the device with a few quick taps with her thumb. The screen made her face glow in the darkness while she quickly turned on the flashlight mode. A small light brightly lit up on the back and illuminated the ground around her feet. With a slight nod, she stepped back up to the President. “Shall we?”

“Of course. Please, do lead the way.”

Pitch black was all they could see aside from the cone of light that cut through it. Eerie silence greeted them once they exited the Student Council room. The halls were unsurprisingly empty and their footsteps echoed back at them. Sayaka knew it was just the Council in the building today and the rest of the members were currently getting other needed supplies for their get together. So at the moment, it should just be Kirari and herself in the academy. Right?

As soon as she thought that, she swore she saw a figure dash around a corner with a hiss. Her shoulders immediately tensed at the possible newfound threat. She cursed herself under her breath for wearing a dress so that her trusty taser wasn’t on her person.

“Stay behind me, President.” Sayaka took her hand without thinking and started walking forward. She went into full bodyguard mode, acting as both her shield and their guiding light. She pushed forward through the darkness in an attempt to smother her dread that was growing in the pit of her stomach. She could feel her mouth starting to become dry from anticipation for what may be hiding in the unknown.

Another skittering sound echoed back at them from the empty hallways. Sayaka jumped and gripped tighter at Kirari’s hand. She eased up on her pace, closing the distance between herself and the Student Council President. She was now on high alert just in case something decided to jump out from the shadows. Her eyes narrowed into a rather intense gaze as she meticulously scanned the blackness. Once satisfied that nothing was there, she pressed onward towards the school’s maintenance room.

The light from the phone shined against the lacquered wooden door. It reflected back at them slightly from the metallic plaque that read ‘Maintenance.’ Squaring her shoulders, Sayaka grabbed the knob and pushed inward. It was just as dark inside the room, but they could see the light from her phone catch on pipes and the glass covering gauges that made no sense to the secretary.

“The fuse box has to be around here somewhere…” Sayaka mumbled to herself. She began to walk forward until she realized she was still gripping Kirari’s hand in her own. Stutters came from her after she released her grip and leapt back from the President. She didn’t seem to mind though, chuckles shaking her shoulders, and she stepped past the flustered girl to enter the chamber.

“I would assume it would be against one of the walls.” Kirari mused as she stepped farther into the room. She slipped past a rather large, odd machine covered in dials and knobs that seemed to regulate something. Once she did, Sayaka hurried after her.

“W-Wait, you won’t be able to see any--!” When she turned the corner, her foot caught on something sticking out from the back of the apparatus. She ended up tripping and dropping her phone to the concrete floor with a deafening clatter. The impact forced the light off and plunged them into pitch black nothingness. Sayaka’s entire back tensed since she suddenly couldn’t see a thing in the cluttered, claustrophobic space. Not to mention, she was unable to locate Kirari in the deep gloom. “President! Where are you?”

“I’m over here. Everything’s alright. Just follow my voice.” Kirari’s calm and collected tone soothed the frayed nerves of the younger girl. Carefully, she toed her way around the floor until she felt the warmth of another person. She let out a relieved sigh, some of the anxiety melting away, and she heard a soft laugh. “See? Everything’s okay. Just relax so we can fix this mess.”

‘Right! Right. Just calm down Sayaka. Nothing is here. You’re just getting caught up in the spirit of Halloween. That’s all.’ She thought to herself in silence. She took in a deep breath then exhaled. Everything was fine. Nothing else was there except Kirari.

Then, a loud crash sounded behind her as if something just dropped from a decent height. Her jaw clenched and she immediately went back to holding her breath out of terror. More heat pressed against her when the invader stepped up close to her back.

Hot, heavy breathing was close to her ear and made the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. She could hear occasional snarls break up the breaths at irregular intervals. Adrenaline started to pump straight into her veins. Her heartbeat pounded loudly against her eardrums and washed out all other sound aside from the panting behind her. She steadily turned on her heel to address the threat hiding away in the shadows.

A loud, feral howl filled the small room with a flicker of light alongside it. Sayaka screamed, only able to see a dark colored pelt and shining fangs coated with saliva in that brief moment the space was illuminated. Drawing back her hand, she sent her closed fist flying into the face of their attacker. She felt it solidly connect with fur and flesh before she spun around to brace herself against Kirari.

Her arms flung around the other’s waist and squeezed tight. She tucked her head against her in an attempt to shield the other Council member. The secretary was trembling, eyes clenched shut with dread. Even though she was terrified, she managed to get out her words with surprising conviction. “Don’t worry Kirari! I’ll protect you!”

“Augh! Fuck!" A familiar voice in the dark cried out as soon as they got their bearings as to what just happened. There was a soft click when a flashlight lit up the room before another similar sound followed after. Sure enough, the lights in the room flared back to life. Standing next to the fuse box for that part of the school was Midari. One hand was resting on the metal box and the other held a flashlight that she flicked off.

Her costume was that of a werewolf. A ripped up flannel shirt was draped over her torso and jeans torn at the knees covered her legs. Faux fur was stuck to her arms and face with what appeared to be special effects glue. Large, fake claws were attached to the ends of her fingers. Animalistic ears poked out from her short black hair. Fangs identical to Kirari’s were stuck to both her bottom and top rows of teeth. They were visible past her lips that had been slightly parted from her somewhat lewd expression. She was just punched after all and the masochist was practically glowing.

“Sayaka, as nice as this is, you’re allowed to let go now.” Kirari stifled a laugh as she looked down at the frightened secretary. Her face was buried in her chest and she was still clinging close to her with her arms locked around their waist. She looked up at the silver haired girl past the frills of her shirt. As soon as she realized where her chin was resting, her face became instantly red. A couple embarrassed sputters tumbled from her lips as she leapt away from her.

“S-S-Sorry! I just wanted to protect you! I didn’t know it was Midari!”

“Don’t worry about it. I think you did just fine keeping me safe from the big, bad wolf.” Kirari slipped an arm around the little witch’s waist and pulled her close to her side. With a small hum, she pressed her lips to her secretary’s temple. Sayaka thought her heart was about to break free from her chest with how hard it was beating.

“Man, why don’t you two just get a room already?” Midari finally spoke up again since she was struck in the face by the assistant. She was rubbing her cheek where a rather large red mark was. Though she didn’t seem the least bit bothered by it. In fact, she seemed downright pleased. She knelt down and scooped up Sayaka’s phone from the floor. It appeared to be in working condition save for maybe a chip in its case when she held it out towards the secretary. “By the way, you got an arm on ya.”

“Ah! I’m so sorry about that Midari! I hope I didn’t hurt you?” She asked while she graciously took her phone back.

“Nah, I’m fine. I should be thanking you really, heh. You kinda gave me a gift actually. And all I wanted to do was pull a little prank on someone.” Midari had gone into a quiet giggle fit, still cupping her reddened cheek. Kirari let out an exasperated sigh before chuckling herself.

“Goodness. I didn’t think the night was going to be like this. What a strange turn of events.” She shook her head, yet a small, amused smile tugged at her lips. Her arm slipped tighter around Sayaka’s middle to pull her just a bit closer. However, despite the warm expression, her voice went frigid when she said, “Although, I wouldn’t exactly have been pleased if one of us was truly injured, Ikishima.”

Midari’s expression finally smoothed out from her euphoric state and she looked away from the President. She moved her hand from her cheek to the back of her neck. “Yeah, well, neither of you guys are hurt, so it’s okay.”

“Thankfully. It was rather hard to see, so it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that an injury could have occurred.”

“Yeah, yeah. Now you’re just bein’ a buzzkill.” The werewolf let out a dejected sigh then made her way over to the door of the maintenance room. With a clawed hand against the door, she turned around with a sly smirk. “You better keep up now though. The rest of us are gonna eat all the candy without ya otherwise.”

She cackled as she hurried out of the maintenance room without another word. Sayaka fought to stammer out a reply and berate the Beautification Committee President. Kirari, on the other hand, simply began to lead the way back out into the hallway. She had no choice but to follow since she was still wrapped up in one of her arms.

As they continued down the relit halls, they eventually heard the cacophony of voices belonging to the rest of the Student Council drifting out from the room. Part of Sayaka wondered if they were all in on Midari’s prank, but she let it go for the time being. After all, Kirari did say this was supposed to be fun earlier. She needed to let herself relax once in a while and she was determined to do just that tonight. Especially after the unneeded fright she just had.

The vampire finally let the witch free from her grip so they could re-enter the Council room. Just like the rest of the school, the lights were finally back to normal and the rest of the members had finally returned. The finishing touches for the decorations were already set up, thankfully, and the others were mingling back and forth around the room. Taking a deep breath, she stepped up to the sweets that were splayed across the table’s surface. She plucked a single piece of chocolate from the haphazard pile. Sayaka freed it from its wrapper then popped it into her mouth.

It was sweet and pleasant on her tongue, if not a bit ordinary. Either way, she let it melt with a hum in the back of her throat. Her mouth twitched into a small smile when she took another piece and turned towards Kirari. She undid one end of the wrapper and offered it to the silver haired girl. “Why not have some, President? You said so yourself, it’s a party and we need to enjoy it.”

Her previous smile was quickly washed away when her arm suddenly snaked back around Sayaka’s waist. She could feel her face flush red when she was pulled close to her torso. Kirari’s expression was relaxed and neutral, as always, save for the ghost of a smirk that danced on the corners of her mouth. It made it difficult for the logical assistant to figure out what exactly was going on inside her head. Her clear blue eyes felt like they were looking right into her frantically beating heart.

“That would be unnecessary. I already have all of the sugar I want right here in front of me.” Kirari leaned down close toward her lips and the end of her nose bumped lightly against hers. She took the brim of her witch hat in her fingertips and pulled it down to the side to shield their faces from any possible prying eyes. Sayaka’s cheeks deepened several more shades of red. Her heart seemed to have stopped when she finally closed the gap with a kiss.

She could still taste the chocolate on her tongue, but the added sweetness from Kirari’s lips made her feel dizzy. Her legs wobbled slightly and she reached out to grip the sleeve of her shirt in an attempt to steady herself. Bliss washed over her and made her eyelids feel heavy. Her vampiric President soon pulled back with a cocky smirk fully plastered on her face.

“Sweet enough?”

“Y-Yeah. More than enough for the night, I think.” Sayaka reached up to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear before letting a tiny smile spread across her flustered face again. Even with the rest of the Council surrounding them, and the earlier prank with Midari, she wouldn’t trade away this Halloween for the world.

Notes:

I sat on this fic for like, a week because I wanted to wait for actual Halloween to be here to post it.
The excitement killed me a little inside ;u;
