Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

“AHH!” Mallory yelled as a paper hornet struck her in the back of the arm. “Which one of you buggers’ did that?!” She said as she turned towards Anthony and Brian, who were snickering behind a wall. “We’re starting a hornet war, find a rubber band and save yourself.” Anthony said before sprinting down the hallway. "Why would we do that?" Ali questioned. “You have until second period is over and then you’re open game.” Brian said before following Anthony to class. “Sounds like we are at war.” Meghan said as she turned on her heels to walk into class.

LATER THAT DAY~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After everyone bought lunch and sat down at an empty table, Anthony spoke up, “We all need to hang out again.”

“Everyone can come over to my house. My parents and sister are going out Saturday night, so you can come over then.” Meghan said as she picked up her pizza. “Yeah, that sounds fun.” Maddy said. “We should all bring a game to play.” Zach said, popping open his milk carton. “I don’t really play video games.” Hanna said. “Don’t worry. I’ll bring a Legend of Zelda game for you. You can pick that up pretty fast.” Anthony reassured her as he threw his arm around her shoulders. “I could totally whoop you all in Tetris!” Ali said as she stared everyone down. “No way, I could beat you at Tetris. It’s so easy.” Brian said nonchalantly. Ali and Brian got into a heated battle of who would win when the bell for class rang.

“Why don’t you guys come over around 7. I’ll order pizzas for us, so just text me with what you like on your pizza.” Meghan said as the group threw their leftovers and empty plates away. “Ok and since the bell has rung, we are in enemy territory.” Brian said as he began loading his rubber band with a hornet. “You are absolutely right, Brian.” Mallory said as she hit him in the hand with a paper hornet, causing him to drop the hornet he was loading. Mallory began running down the hall just to smack face-first into the chest of the school’s principal, Mr. Liest.

“Why is it always you kids?” Mr. Liest sighs, putting his hand out as a sign to give him the rubber bands. After surrendering all rubber bands, he says, “You all need to stay over for Tuesday school. I’ll call your parents to tell them where you’ll be and that you need to be picked up afterwards. Now go on to class. And WALK!”

The group walks on, heads down and tails between their legs. “Damn, this sucks. Now I have to call work and tell them I’ll be late.” Anthony whined. “You think that sucks? Just wait until I get home. My parents are going to rip into me.” Hanna piped up. “I’m afraid to go home now.”

“Come on guys, it’s only a few hours and then, soon enough, we’ll be eating junk food and playing video games.” Meghan said in an effort to cheep up the rest of the group. “Everything is going to be awesome tonight.”
